The detailing to decor from the outside to the inside of the restaurant is incredible. I really like the how cosy and intimate the restaurantcan be but can also be a social space.
The food has wonderfully generous sized portions and the steaks are cooked to perfection. Tender and juicy steak and tender fresh salmon. The food is plated beautifully and has just the right amount of sides to accompany the main affair.
Went to Tony’s for the first time as it is known for its steak and I loved the food. I ordered the fillet Mignon, which had bacon and mushroom sauce with a side of vege choice (either salad or veggies) and chips. I asked for medium, the steak was more rare than expected but still good. The restaurant has such rustic decor and gives an authentic feel of a steakhouse.
If you're looking for less expensive bill while dining out for steak, this place is the one. I believe Lord Nelson has been around for a while now, with historical looking interiors.
Three of us went in for dinner and I ordered the specialty cut sirloin steak (around $38 which is great as it includes fries and salad). I ordered medium rare and it was perfectly cooked and well seasoned. My friends ordered pepper steak ($40 for the set of fries/potato croquette + salad/veges) but they mentioned their steak was salty. A few months before this experience I did not enjoy my steak at all but they have definitely improved.
Service is friendly most of the time, sometimes could be better. Plates look tacky but the meal was of value and I enjoyed it.
Dinner with friends were a fantastic experience here, although the restaurant is on the romantic side, not too crowded, staff recommendation is good, and food here is good for general public
Love the rustic and vintage decor here.
We ordered Caper steak( fell in love with the rich caper and blue cheese sauce) and Scottish steak with mushroom (the mushroom sauce was so good).
For the sides, we went for French fries and veggies. French fries were so crispy and yummy but the veggies were quite plain.
Customer service was great; staff were very friendly .
Would definitely come here again for the amazing steaks.
Nice place and friendly staff. Ordered Scotch fillet, Pepper Steak, New York Cut and Seafood Chowder. Food taste very good and cook at a good standard. Highly recommended.
Saw the steak meal special ($15) outside on the blackboard and was very happy I went in for my 40th birthday lunch... I love the decor and the uniqueness of it... The salad wasn't very nice, but the fries, steak and Mushroom sauce were AMAZING... Great price for amazing food... I would definitely love to go again
I had the best Salmon Fillet so far. A very rustic restaurant with retro interiors and excellent service.
It was a dinner experience and the Crispy Skin Salmon with Citrus Hollandaise was cooked to perfection. The skin was just crispy enough to give the right relish. The asparagus, carrot on the sides makes the dish just perfect.
Try the Statesman Pale Ale beer and it goes just well with the Salmon.
Prefect place for dinner just a few doors up from our accommodation. Cheese stuffed chicken breast for husband and chicken schnitzel for me. Tiramisu was good. Portions are huge.

Great little steak restaurant tucked away in the heart of the city. Right next to the city countdown or opposite the atrium bungy ball ride. The entrance is quite discreet and makes it feel like a exclusive club. Steak was cooked well like usual but dont expect anything special. At $40 per steak, it comes with sides, potatoes or fries and salad or vegetables. Would recommend choosing fries over potatoes though and you wont be disappointed. The vegetable side has greatly improved over boiled or steam peice of cauliflower and carrots i got last year. At least this time they appear to have put some effort at the least and glazed it in butter (photos of salad/vegetables side). The service is good as they always check if you are happy after the dishes have been served and if youd like any ketchup or mustard. Would come back and its exactly what you want when you crave a good quality steak.
Good place for an excellent steak in the classical sense - historic decor, tables and menus. The food is pretty decent and the service is excellent. It is on the pricy side - just a little overpriced, but worth trying and deciding for yourself.
I tried the minute steak from the express selection section of the menu and it was great! Generous piece of steak with salad and fries for $29! It may not be the best steak I've tried but it is definitely enjoyable and you really get your bang for your buck with that deal. I would go back!
Tony's is always packed with food worshipers, their decor is a nice homey American style diner, filled with bright lighting.
Their steak was famous for a reason. Even their roasted veggies and potato chips sides were exceptional. I absolutely adore their seafood chowder soup, it's a must try.
Amazing food. Been here on a birthday dinner of a friend. We were showed to our seats right away.
Ambience wise, very nice.
Food was very good. I had the Beef and it was tasty. 👍🏻 vert tender.
The service was also good.
The only thing bad side is that, we have to wait to wait long for the food.😑
Overall..its a good place to dine in.
This place has good service and friendly staff. The steak was good and I loved the grilled verges they served with it. We also tried the lamb brains which were surprisingly really good! Only problem is the tacky decor which probably hasn't been changed in decades ( the type of stuff you see in Gordon Ramsey's kitchen nightmares) and the food was overpriced for the portion. However it is nice and quiet for a date and the ambience is nice.
Quite Sunday Evening Family Dinner.
Ambience, Service, Food and Price everything's excellent. Would recommend and will visit again for lunch someday as well.
Dined here with my partner last night, love the vibe and decor of this place. It's all very vintage & something different. The staff are friendly, we were greeted and seated straight away. Our waiter was lovely and attentive throughout our visit. The menu is massive, there's a huge selection of yummy options. I had the chicken breast stuffed with cambert & my partner had the T-bone steak. I liked the fact you got too choose from a range of sides to go with your mains. We both chose fries & vegetables. The wait for food was reasonable & the portion of meat was massive. I really enjoyed my chicken & my partner enjoyed his steak. I thought the sides were a little bland and disappointing. The chips lacked any flavour & the veggies were just a few carrots and courgettes. Overall we enjoyed our meals but I did feel it was pretty pricey for what you get.
Thanks for another delicious dinner Lord Nelsons! We got the garlic bread and crumbed scallops to share for starters, scallops have always been a favourite of mine and tonight was no different! Partner ordered the peppered steak for main, delicious cut of eye fillet, cooked too perfection! I got the chicken angelica(pictured) So yummy! Generous portions of chicken which i couldn't even finish, overall lovely experience, can't wait to come back :)
If you enjoy a good steak then this is the place to be. With dim lighting and dark red undertones spread throughout, there is a pronounced warmth which collects itself within the tight booths creating one heck of a cozy atmosphere to graze in. Service was fantastic with staff all working their hardest to give their customers the best experience possible. This really is a special place, a place and time which is typically reserved for special occasions where family and friends can come together to share laughs and memories prompting a feeling of wellbeing and love, if I could eat here everyday I would unfortunately right now with the parking and travel times in and out of the city it would be most unpractical. Everything here is of quality and at almost $40 NZD a Main I would expect nothing less. The steak cooked perfectly topped with a brandy and cracked pepper sauce which raises the question "Who died and went to heaven then came back with the Sauce". The peas had a rich dark green appearence and a taste which I would describe as being fit for only the finest of king's ( Eating here certainly made me feel like one ). The potato and colliflower were perfect and the cheese sauce was nothing short of mouth watering deliciousness. There is also a very fascinating till which has probably counted more physical money than Bill Gates in the years it has been in business ( still works too ). Overall 10 / 5 Mr. Grey Signing off.
I can't believe it has taken me this long to write a review. I have been coming to Lord Nelson for so long I can't even remember how long it has been since I tasted my first delicious steak and never looked back. I love this place, it acts like comfort food. If I want a good quality steak grilled perfectly the way I like it served with delicious vegetable or a salad, I know this is where I will get it. You never have to worry about the taste changing or it not living up to expectations because it always has. The service is always great and everyone that works here is really friendly. I definitely recommend Tony's Lord Nelson, 100%
I went with my family yesterday at dinner time. The whole place is decorated to imitate a carriage. The whole place was dark lit up by lamps which gave the place a mysterious atmosphere. Although it was a bit hard to locate the entrance at first we found the place nevertheless and loved it.
All 4 of us ordered steak. I ordered the carpet bag steak from the gourmet steak section. It was very tasty. The thick cut was stuffed with oyster and there were more than just one. I ordered a salad side and potato which went perfectly well with my meal.
Would definitely recommend and will go again when I have the chance.
Go here for lunch probably once a week and am never let down. Great steak cooked right, great value, great service. Staff are friendly and helpful. Doesn't get any better.
The best steak i have ever eaten. Very tender and tasty.
Highly recommend the mushroom sauce with the steak.
The seafood chowder is very tasty too
I love this place! The food isn't fancy, creative or complex, its just simple, quality ingredients cooked well.
The interior is old school - but I personally love it. So classic.
I always order the eye fillet bernaise. The steak is always cooked perfectly (medium rare is how i like my steak). The bernaise sauce is perfectly creamy and buttery. The potato croquette and steamed vegetables with cheese sauce is so simple but compliments the steak so well. If your like me and love wholesome, simple food then you will love tonys!

We decide to give it a try on Valentines Day as they stated they have the best beef steak in the whole Auckland. I got myself a XX Bag (forgotten the name) dish which was not cheap, $37. The size of the steak wasn’t big but it was stuffed with oysters yet the taste is still too bland, mashed potato balls on the other hand was very original and tasted different to other potato balls. The counter woman was not happy when we wanted to split the cost.
One of my favourite restaurants! Probably because this is the only place I know that stuffs steaks with fresh oysters! And that is exactly what I ordered! My steak was cookly perfectly to medium rare - just to my liking. Inside, they stuffed a few fat, juicy oysters. Yum! Yum! Yum! Though, what my steak could have done with was some sauce.
My boyfriend loves his steak wrapped in bacon and I believe he always orders that when he's there. It was topped with thick, chunky mushroom sauce! (That worked with mine too as I stole some of his mushroom sauce for my steak).
Love the interior of Tony's Lord Nelson. The 2 seater booths look comfortable, but we sat downstairs, in the middle where the seats were a bit awkward..
This is by far the best place I have ever been to in my life!
Do you wish you could ever go back in time? Do you miss the tasteful decor of the 80s? How about your favourite english pub that you and your friends used to frequent when you were younger? Well, you are in for a treat.
Upon stepping inside of this establishment, you are instantaneously transported to a world you thought no longer existed, a la Coronation Street. It strikes you with its dark, almost depressing interior, and yet somehow brings a smile to your face. From the seating, to the carpet, to the electrics, absolutely nothing has been updated in the past 30 years, perhaps not even the wait staff.
As you are seated in your booth you are able to absorb some of what is going on around you. Did I just step into some kind of alternate reality? You might ask. The bar area is just as quaint, featuring the old pub levers you've come to admire.
The disappointing thing about this place is that the staff seem to be confused about where they are. They fail to realise that they are in a magical dream land where the absence of smiles and joy is unacceptable. As they deliver your food to you, there is not even a hint of happiness in their faces, why this could be, I do not know.
The food was what you expect for $10, enough said.
Definitely coming back here, in numbers.
Where do I start.....
I walked in and instantly felt like I was taken back to the 1800's the décor really did weird me out. We we greeted by a miserable looking waitress and taken down the back to a booth (was really hoping we were going to be seated in the saloon/lounge which would have been grouse)
Anyway we were given men us with some of the options just lined out with a purple felt tip pen; these menus look like they belonged in my grandmothers basement so I didn't know why didn't they haven't done a re-print!
Anyhow, we ordered the $10 scotch fillet, chip & salad. The meal was O.k I wasn't sure really what was going on. I was distracted by the ambience & overall presence the establishment protruded and ate in a distant haze.
Another note I forgot earlier, my dining companion had a dirty side plate. Seemed as someone had stained it with some bodily fluid of some sort and had not been thoroughly cleaned after, or even cleaned at all!!
One of the highlights had to b when we paid! The cash register mimicked some type of time machine that the manager was using for payment methods it sure did take my interest!
On that note I will be back. This place is the real deal!
Enjoyed the food it was simple but well cooked and very reminiscent of traditional steak house meals. I think the prices are fair and the alcohol prices are very reasonable. My Sav was $10 for a decent sized glass which would normally be $15 anywhere else in Auckland. I'll be back.
I have been going to Tony's Lord Nelson's restaurant often when I'm in Auckland. The fare is the sort of thing you would order back in the '80s -- deep fried camenbert for example. It's not fine dining and the food is as unchanging as a wet Wellington. I find it quite enjoyable.
A long standing excellent dining experience always good value and top notch food. The food is still as good as ever anx thd experience is worth it. By the way if you like mushrooms you have to try the button mushrooms on rye.
The waitresses were friendly and experienced. The atmosphere was a welcome suprise. The cast iron decoration and old wooden furniture made for a charming little restaurant. I ordered the steak with mushroom sauce. The steak was perfect and the sauce was spot on. The only drawback was the cost. A restaurant you'll have to try atleast once. However, multiple visits might leave you with a second mortgage.
Had dinner many times here. Food and service are amazing. Probably best in town so far. I like their cashier till. :)
Service: 4/5
Wait time: 4/5
Environment: 5/5
Food Quality: 5/5
Food Quantity: 4/5
Had a great time at Lord Nelson's! The ribs were great and the portions were very generous!
Exceptional service, steaks that are the best I've ever had - never disappoints!! HIGHLY recommend!!! Great selection of steaks and other dishes. I've never had a dish here I didn't like. Always cooked to perfection and the staff deliver friendly, efficient service.
Just went again on Saturday night and yet again was not disappointed - it is by far the best steak meal I have ever had - and I have had a few, love my steak. Their Pepper steak is to die for. Service is great and friendly. They are so consistently good and tasty! Why can't other restaurants get it right?
I come here quite regularly and they never fail to get it right. The steak is always cooked perfectly and everything tastes wonderful. Service is always great, and seating is comfortable. I've never had any complaints, and that's why I will always come back.
Came here for dinner with my workmates. First time here so I didn't know what to expect, and I assumed that it was a small restaurant from just looking at the front door but it's a lot bigger than I thought it would be. Interior is tastefully decorated in an old English pub style with dark wood and little booths for couples.
Service: excellent, the lady whom I believe was the duty manager?? Was great and greeted us with a smile and made some small talk too. Timing of the food was good since no one had to wait very long for the meals to come out.
Food: excellent, one person on our table couldn't eat meat so it was nice to have non meat options like salmon fillet etc. portions and servings are just right.
Cost: reasonable and won't break the bank. However I am disappointed with the serving size of a side order of fries which cost $6 and the portion was just too small and not justifiable.
That was the only thing I wasn't so happy about.
Anyone looking for a good feed this is a good place to go.
I would travel any distance for the amazing steak they serve here!
Perfectly cooked every time and the pepper and brandy sauce is to die for. Portion sizes are good value for money and I have never left hungry.
The service is always friendly and attentive and it's clean and cozy.
If you're a steak lover you must eat here before you die
Probably the only place I could give 5 stars to. I have been dining there for years and have NEVER been disappointed. You always know you are going to get a consistently good meal and you never leave hungry. Our meals have always arrived in good time and if we are in a hurry because we are going to a show etc they put a rush on our meal. Wonderful restaurant.
Been there a couple times before. It is a brilliant restaurant Nice sirloin steak. I love the deep fried or tempura oyster.
Never displeased with the chowder and plates are big and hearty. Paying over $30 I expect a big steak and was not let down either. TOTALLY ENJOY THIS PLACE but the only let down is that I was eating right outside the toilet lobby which sort of wrecks my appetite. Service was good and enjoyed the atmosphere
have been here once and loved it. was great service and nice environment. am going there this Saturday to celebrate mine and my boyfriend's 3 years. cannot wait. the prices may be a little high but it's worth every cent.
My wife and I consider this to be our favourite restaurant. We don't eat there as often as we would like, but when we do, we are never disappointed. Their steaks are to die for, and their old style atmosphere completes the dining experience. If you like a steak cooked to perfection, this is the place for you
most memorable steak meal ever,
had great service and wasnt bold over by the prices for once.
Have been dining at Lord and Nelsons for years, great food & decently priced. Always been meaning to try something new however always end up getting 'the usual!'
A++++ Restaurant
Tony Lord Nelson Restaurant in Auckland offers a delightful dining experience that is sure to satisfy your taste buds. The standout dish for me was the T-bone steak. Cooked to perfection, it was juicy, tender, and bursting with flavor. The quality of the meat was evident, and it paired wonderfully with their selection of sauces and sides.
One of the highlights of my visit was the friendly and attentive staff. From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed and well taken care of. They were knowledgeable about the menu, happy to offer recommendations, and ensured that every aspect of my dining experience was enjoyable.
To end the meal on a sweet note, I tried their apple pie, and it was a fantastic choice. The warm, flaky pastry combined with the sweet and slightly tart apple filling created a comforting and delicious dessert.
The ambiance of the restaurant is warm and inviting, making it a great place for a romantic dinner or a special celebration. Whether you're a steak enthusiast or looking for a memorable dining experience, Tony Lord Nelson Restaurant is worth a visit. It offers a winning combination of excellent food, friendly service, and a cozy atmosphere. I'll definitely be returning for another satisfying meal.
We had a 6.45pm reservation on a Fri evening and while settling in, realised the place was filling up! Nonetheless, we were well attended to. The black pepper steak was delightful and the potato croquettes that came with it just a joy to bite into. The fish of the day was lightly battered and tasted fresh. We also had the chocolate mud cake - perfectly moist and chocolatey but not overly sweet. An excellent dessert to cap the fabulous meal. It's wonderful as is, but for me, it would reach perfection if the whipped cream that came with it were replaced by a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream! :-) Overall, a very enjoyable evening meal with good service in a unique dining setting.
Absolutely love coming here. Food is always great and so is the service. Nice casual place with a great atmosphere.
Fantastic food with very comfortable environment.. Lord Nelson Rib is of very high value and chowder soup is full of fresh scallops/mussels. Definitely better than well-known Jevouis steak that everyone usually recommends me from their top pocket list.. Will definitely come back again. The reasonable price and all the detail in the food deserves a great big thumb 👍
The food was delicious. Friendly staff. The beef was perfect. Seafood chowder was great. Highly recommended. Make sure to make reservation beforehand.
The place was much bigger than I thought, quite suitable for large group / family dinner. Many choices included in the menu, you can always find something you like among all the options. The steaks are cooked very well, decent sizes. The salmon steak was good, but apart from that, other seafood choices were a little bit weak, I would recommend you stick with the meat choices. We ordered a lot, really a lot-- but we didnt have to wait that long before all are served. So that was good. Overall it is a quite good steak house.
I was very hesitant about going just because I'm use to Tony's steak house but....I absolutely loved it! I love my steak medium rare they did great, perfectly seasoned and I asked for pepper sauce and ended up ordering g another one it's delicious! Croquettes were beautiful, crunchy outside nice and soft on the inside. Tiramisu excellent! Would go again.
Had dinner on a lazy Wednesday night here.
Rack of lamb cooked wonderfully.
Green lip mussels were well presented and tasty though one or two of them were about to turn.
Good portions.
Good beers.
Service was friendly but a little slow.
Happy overall.
Ambience is really nice and rustic. Had the peppercorn filet steak, medium rare, as well as the garlic bread and chocolate mud cake and blue margarita (same price as regular margarita, just with blue curaçao added) and cosmopolitan. Little pricey but EVERYTHING was really good. Black napkins were gorgeous and super absorbent as well!!
One of the best seafood chowders I've ever tasted! Not only were ALL our meals exceptional in taste, the size was more than expected too. Fantastic place with reasonable prices. Also loved the booth style seating and cosy gally atmosphere. Will certainly be back.
First time here from out of town.
With a small group and we really enjoyed the food.
So many different steak meal options it was hard to decide.
Yes would go again without a doubt
Amazing service and steaks! We were impressed with every single order, and the booth seating is intimate. Ambiance - wonderfully old world.
I was very hesitant about going in because the outside vibes was not it was a little dusty and stuffs. But the moment they opened their shop I absolutely loved it!, loved the interior and the vibes. I love my steak medium rare they did great job, perfectly seasoned Would go again. Absolutely loved their food and costumer service. The one that served us was Pawi Kaur if I am right and she did such and amazing job. Parking would be a problem when going to Tony's Lord Nelson otherwise will surely come back.
Great experience at Tony's! My husband had the Lord Nelson steak medium and he got medium-rare which was what he was aiming for. I had the soup dunjour (chicken and cauliflower) which was delicious. The mussels weren't that great but still good. A bonus is that they offer rice as a side which is rare to see in restaurants. Loved my order. ❤️
The ambiance is very English family bar restaurant without the bar. The 2 person booth looked very cozy. Preferred the 4 person booth for the 2 of us for more room. The waitress was funny too! She was really good and attentive and on to it.
Would love to come back and try other meals.
The dining area of this restaurant is simply amazing. I really like the olden style windows out front mimic the amazing olden interior. There is an alcove as you come in with an old-style cash register which they use for ringing up the bill. I really like the brick and wood interior with the metal along the edges. The booths were comfortable but I did feel like I was slipping out of my chair most of the time.
The food menu is quite large and so trying to pick something was a bit hard. We ended up trying the venison kebab and I went with the Angus fillet with anchovy butter. The venison kebab was three huge cubes of venison served over rice. It was nicely cooked with a nice char around the edges along with the veges. I quite enjoyed the anchovy butter since it gave the meat an interesting flavour and nice saltiness. The option of croquette in place of mash was really nice since that was really tasty. I went with the salad instead of the roast veges and I enjoyed it mostly because it came with a boiled egg. We got the brandy snaps for dessert and they were really sweet and crunchy. The food was quite tasty and the service really nice.
Great place to hide from the hustle is bustle of Queen Street.
Food was amaaazzzing.
Lunch in Tony’s Lord Nelson restaurant was so great!! I’m so sad there’s only 5 starts for maximum in google review.
I ordered daily special lunch, everything was wonderful! Soup and garlic breads, scotch fillet steak was so delicious. I don’t know how to describe this amazing and wonderful lunch!! Staff was so kind, she was amazing!!
I’m so glad there’s wonderful and nice this restaurant in Auckland!!
You need more stars if you want to rate this place. We stayed at the sky city but dined here. I thought the food was better. Nice, more cosy atmosphere. Great staff, great meals. Felt nice in there. Great value for money.
