Enjoyed our dinner here , ordered a seafood risotto and a padella, garlic pita , food was great , had a great time catch up with my sis! I used to come here for work lunch , as they do have a very reasonable lunch menu, offering steak sandwich, Greek meatball, lasagna etc . Recommended!
Really nice cafe with good environment. Food was super delicious however only thing stopping it from a 5 star review was portion size. Creamy mushrooms are a must get.
My partner and I dine out a fair bit in Auckland and the food here would have to be one of the best we have had. The meatballs are incredible and a dish we always both look forward to. The restaurant has a great intimate ambience and the staff are very attentive, friendly and helpful. We would highly recommend this place to anyone for a great dinner out. Thanks Safran, we will be back soon!
Their vege lasagne was delicious! I often love trying out meatless options when dining out, and Safran Cafe did not disappoint with theirs. The sauce was divine alongside the pasta; not too rich or salty. Usually while eating lasagna I find that I get sick of it quite quickly since it’s all too much. However they did a great job here with this one, and alongside with pumpkin and mushrooms (my faves!) it was such a perfect dish for myself! We also got their roast chicken salad. This was a fairly typical salad, nothing too extraordinary but still was a good meal in itself.
The restaurant itself is really cozy and warm inside. And the staff were friendly trying their best to be as attentive as possible despite it being quite busy that night. I’d definitely be back again to try out more of their menu :)

Safran! Took mum out for dins last night and went to Safran in new market as she had said she has wanted to go there for a while due to always seeing Safran packed with people and to her packed restaurant= good food and oh my it was good! We ordered the roast chicken salad, mushroom risotto and the sticky ginger pudding for dessert. The roast chicken salad had a Mediterranean feel to it and I really liked that there was a good salad to meat/vege ratio so the mesclun salad took up less than half the dish. I really liked the chicken+chorizo, veges and roast veges & veges, however I found the roast potato was dry and the chicken was a little dry too. But overall the salad tasted amazing! The mushroom risotto was so good I loved the combination of mushroom and Parmesan and the risotto was so nice and creamy. The sticky ginger pudding was pretty good, I love ginger so I was excited to try it. It came with icecream that helped balance the sweetness of the pudding. However I found that the sauce was very sweet and at the end of it sickly sweet despite sharing it between us. The pudding itself was very good and I really liked the amount of ginger that was in the pudding and the icecream definitely helped balance it out. The portions were big which I loved because I was full before dessert which means I wouldn’t have to snack at home. Overall service was good even with the restaurant having a lot of customers. I would rate a 4.5/5 and will probably be back to try their fettuccine and desserts (bc I love desserts hehe)

I came to Safran Cafe for lunch with my mum and brother. The restaurant itself is quite cosy and there is also outdoor seating for warmer days. We were seated indoors as it wasn't warm enough to sit outside (if you do want to though, I believe there are blankets). The service was average and the food came out at a reasonable time. The portions were relatively massive for its price compared to other cafes, filling us all up. I got the cajun chicken salad, my brother got the paella and my mum got the chicken fettuccine.
The cajun chicken salad was so delicious and filling! The main thing I worry about when I order a salad is that I won't be full but Safran's cajun chicken salad is guaranteed to fill you up. The chicken was covered with cajun powder, making it spicy and flavourful but also a bit dry. The salad was dressed with a bit of balsamic vinegar with half a tomato and a thick slice of cucumber, I would have preferred more dressing but it was still delicious! My favourite part of the salad was the pita bread and hummus. The hummus had a strong fresh taste of chickpeas with a bit of garlic that wasn't overpowering and when I dipped the pita bread (which was also soft, airy and light) into the hummus, it became my favourite combination. I tried a bit of my mum's fettuccine and the creaminess of the chicken throughout the pasta was evident and tasted really good, the fettuccine wasn't soft/overcooked and it was cooked perfectly. My brother's paella looked really delicious as well! Great for cooler days if you want a good hearty meal to warm up.
Overall, Safran Cafe is definitely a must-try when in Newmarket. I highly recommend this place.
With over 12 years experience and presence in Newmarket, it’s no wonder these guys proclaim the “best coffee in Newmarket”. The coffee certainly is exceptional, but the food and wine list is delicious with plenty of options for the later parts of the day. Their more modern tapa dishes have me impressed each time and even their more traditional Matador’s Cape is outstanding, while the Beef Burger, Qebapa, or Roast Chicken Salad are my favourite along with a great range of beers for a lunch option. Experienced operators, with exceptional service and delicious food each time!!!
I have come in and out of Auckland for 5 years. I stay nearby because these are the best restaurants in new market area. At the Safran I have enjoyed the Paella, the lamb rump, matadors cape, the scotch fillet and breakfast on the weekends. I enjoy eating heat during business and enjoy every moment eating here. You not find a finer resturant then the Safran Cafe. Picture of Matadors Cape, soooo delicious.

One of the restaurants lining the grassy area on the intersection of Khyber Pass and Broadway. This place has been here for a while.
CAme for lunch and was able to get a table. They had an indoor or outdoor dining option even though it was a bit drizzly. I always thought it was a Spanish restaurant but apparently, they are Albanian. I had the paella but they had the qebapa, an Albanian sausage. Food was quite nice, tasty and flavoursome. The paella came in a cast iron pan so it was sizzling away when it arrived. They do have quite a selection of different foods as well. The wall had a tapas board with the different ones that they have.
The service was friendly and the food was good so a really nice place for dining in New Market.
The food was excellent, the place had a great atmosphere and the staff were polite and attentive to our needs. I definitely will be going back there.
Found this little cosy and romantic place by coincidence but so happy I did.
The overall experience deserves a 4 but the service was so good that I would give an extra star only for that reason.
Food was in small portion but still enough to make you full. I ordered the patatas bravas, chicken wings, chips, qebapa and 2 big desert. Everything was yummy and delivered fast.
Highly recommend and will be back.
First time at Safran, and I’m not sure why we haven’t been here before! Excellent service, delicious food & great environment with inside & outside seating.
We had the sirloin steak which was perfection, and the pork belly which was delicious. Pear tart tartan & chocolate cannelloni were also very good
Popped into Safran for dinner before a movie recently - hadn’t done any prior research, just wandered around the various options and decided to give Safran a try, as it looked romantic.
We were super impressed - the wait staff were friendly, helpful and attentive. It had a really lovely, warming feel to it on such an awful winters night. The food was delicious! Possibly a wee bit pricey for the amount that you got, but can you go out to a nice place these days without it being pricey?
We ordered a selection of tapas this time, but the mains menu looked gorgeous too so we will definitely be back to try that next time.

I have seen that some reviews had criticized on safran's lunch and dinner but I have only been there for breakfast.
Firstly, they sell Allpress coffee, the coffee they make is a little bitter but I like it that way.
Secondly, I like a good breakfast so I ordered eggs benedict with spinach and mushroom also smoked salmon on the side. (Yep that's the proof that I'm a foodie) It doesn't look much in the picture but it was actually plenty. The eggs were lovely but the mushroom was a little salty. The salmon was freshly smoked, I liked it. The way they cooked spinach was so good that I ordered another serve on the side haha. I had to order the Safran scramble since it had their name on it, oh it smelt so good when it came. Soft scrambled eggs worked perfectly with chorizo, capsicums and potatoes. They recommended me the smoked salmon and potato hash with two eggs on the top, well it didn't go wrong, but they might wanna put a bit more salmon on the plate.
Thirdly, the waitress was nice and friendly to me despite some reviews are not happy during lunch or dinner service, maybe they slack off during busy hours I don't know...... Generally I like the place.
Ps: I didn't eat all these food in one day. Tbh, I've known this place for awhile.
Safran has the best Cajun Chicken (lunch time menu)! But my only problem with this place is the wait times! Located close to work, my team and I very much enjoy the food here, but every time we do visit Safran its a minimum 1 hour wait for our food. There was an occasion where we waited 1hour and 45 mins for our dinner and we feel is not acceptable. We will still come back because we enjoy the food, but you definitely need more staff out back to accommodate our hangryness. This rating would change if food wait times were a lot shorter!

I mostly enjoyed my time here last night, but wasn’t blown away by the food.
Our prawn appetiser was small but delicious: juicy prawns drizzled with tasty sweet chilli, sitting on a slice of bread that soaked up the sauce.
I tried my friend's polenta gnocchi, which was quite substantial and tastier than I expected. Unlike most gnocchi I’ve seen, the ones here are fried and well-seasoned. But having a lot of them in one sitting made my friend feel a bit bloated, so the verdict is that it’s better off treated as a side dish. However, I enjoyed all the textures here – including the creamy goat cheese alongside pomegranates, nuts, and soft mushrooms.
The letdown of the night was my paella. It was a bit bland; I tasted a lot more tomato than saffron, which made it feel a bit cheap. I’m glad it came with a decent amount of seafood in the mix, but sadly I don’t think the dish was worth $30.50.
My friend and I came on a Friday without a booking, and we were able to get a table for two just before 6. While the night got a bit busier, I felt the service was slightly slow at first as I noticed that some people who arrived after us got their food before we did.
But on the plus side, Safran’s menu offers a decent range to choose from, their service was friendly, and I also like that they have daily specials from Monday to Thursday.
Overall, I’m glad that I went to check Safran out but it wouldn't go out of my way to go back anytime soon.
We went here for a friend's birthday dinner and we were lucky it was Tapas Special night so each Tapas was only $14...especially enjoyed the chili prawn Tapas. Delicious! Their chocolate fudge dessert was yumm... but left disappointed as they didn't have the vegan chocolate hazelnut dessert I wanted to have!! An enjoyable experience.
Huge and delicious breakfast. which all came out at the same time. Great service and friendly wait staff. Nice and warm outside area too with plenty of heaters. Lovely spot for a sunny but cold day.
Went lunch time on a friday and we got one of the last available sitting plaxes. excellent food and service. Had salt and pepper squid, so yumm. totally recommended place. will be back.

I have been here off and on over the many years this has been situated here. Having had fond memories of many late night dinners here, I have been coming here recently with friends and family and so far, it has rated the same as my past memories. The service has been quiet, not intrusive, but very quick when you need them. Our orders have always come out quickly without fuss, the meals themselves have been delicious, with well balanced seasoning, steaks have always been cooked to each diner's preference, and the sides are just lovely. Their wine and drink selections are good, not extensive but offerings for all price ranges and definitely some nice ones for the experienced palate! Nice option for dinner - be it a quiet one with a friend or partner, it is also good for a larger group. Recommend.
Wow ❤️. I need to be in Newmarket more by the looks of it! All of their eateries just know what they are doing 😭. The location is primo, the service is out of this world and the menu is really cool! From what I believe the owners are Albanian? The menu definitely reflects a sense of European culture mixed with Western culture. I definitely appreciate all of the options on the menu here, how could you not when there's steak sandwiches and risotto all in one place!! Writing this review has me hungry for their food again 😂. Worth a try even if you need to travel far to test it out😉.
Best spanish food in town! The hamburger is amazing! I haven't figured out yet what they put in the beef, but the flavour is SO addictive.. drinks are incredibly well made. This is one of the few places in Auckland that make good coffee. The hardest part about eating here is deciding what to eat and drink! Service is some of the best in Auckland too. Polite, friendly and very attentive but not intrusive. We love going to this place for brunch on weekends.

Great service. Lovely to sit outside when the weather is nice. Great selection of mains during lunch on the specials menu. Large portion sizes and very tasty.
Their lasagne is huuuuuuge. The Albanian sausages are also really good. The meatballs are also delicious.
The toilet is a bit of a maze. Got lost on the way back because the whole lot of restaurants along here share the same toilets.

This place has a really chill atmosphere and the seating is really comfortable. All the staff are very friendly as well. I had the chicken burger and it taates good. However, the chicken is a bit burned.
Work lunch here is great value and there is something to suit everyone. I had the cajun chicken and it was good value for lunch and filling nothing amazing but tasty . The other option on the value menu were well portioned and good . Wouldnt be rushing back but its good for groups in a handy spot
I popped in here en route to a work meeting. I had kept walking past their sign that says 'best coffee in Newmarket'. Decided it was about time I give it a try.
Ordered a cappuccino. Had to stand around for a bit and wait for someone to come back make it, the server who started making it seemed to stop midway through.
They're a restaurant so there wasn't any real waiting area near the counter so thankfully it wasn't very busy at that time of the morning.
Got my coffee - it's good, not burnt, but definitely not the best in Auckland. Newmarket maybe!
Haven't had enough coffee in the area to compare.
But it's a strong statement so others should put them to the test as well!
Went here with my entire office. We all ordered from their $15 lunch menu. I had the beef lasagne, was yummy and huge portion, had to do a takeaway. Also got one of the muffins from the counter. Very good service and we all had a great time.
I really wasn't expecting anything special when we went here for a work lunch, so I was very pleasantly surprised when it turned out so good.
Its a generalised european/middle eastern style but the chef uses his talent to put little twists in the dishes to lift them from being mundane.
We had the risotto, the albanian sausages, the steak sandwich, cajun chicken and the burger, they were all great. The cajun chicken came with pita bread that had a marvelous smoky flavour and all for $15 each.
Staff were friendly and concerned, checking to see we had what we needed.
I would definite recommend, and will be going back.

We ordered the Albanian meatballs and the Steak sandwich from the $15 lunch menu. The meatballs were decent. The sandwich was great - came with a good chunk of steak, fries and proper bread. Service was pretty good - meals were served in about 15 mins or so.
Would definitely recommend coming here for the lunch special - its really good value.
First time here and wouldn't be the last. Just tried their coffee. It's worth the money. Would keep me up for a long time. The menu looks interesting would be back for dinner one day

Mum and I had the most amazing impromptu lunch and experience here at Safran last week after her job interview. Thanks for the great food and service! We will absolutely be back for more!
Went here for a work lunch last week- the $15 lunch menu was very tempting but I ordered a paella to share with a frined, as I wasnt very hungry. Unfortunately the paella was very underwhelming- only tasted of tinned tomatoes, no spices :-( Generous amounts of chicken, chorizo and seafood made up for that though- and the service was excellent!! I will definitely go back to try other menu items :-)
I had organised for a lunch with colleagues this afternoon at Safran. It was our first time and I'd like to say I was extremely impressed by the experience. Very attentive staff and there was almost no wait time for the food (which was also great)! Will definitely be back :)

Breakfast was cooked beautifully, toast done to my specifications.
I felt the pot of tea was overpriced.

Great spot for breakfast/brunch, but get here early when it is nice an quiet. Big Breakfast is outstanding, but like too many cafes doesn't include any sauce or chutney (the little things that elevate a meal), coffee was very good as well.

I like to come here for the coffee as it's pretty good, you can buy a prepaid coffee card which works out to be $3 per coffee regardless of size, the cheapest around.
I've only been here once for dinner but it was only an average experience. I'd ordered the steak which is a classic dish that shouldn't be hard to get right.
The dish originally comes with blue cheese sauce but since I'm not a fan of blue cheese, I ask to swap it for bearnaise instead.
When it arrived it was an average slab of steak (waitress had said it was about 200g) on top of some cubes of roast potatoes and thin slices of courgettes.
The sirloin steak was ok but had a bit too much fat and gristle. The potatoes were nice, but the sauce was a little greasy with no herbs present. Given that it was nearly $30 I expected better from the place especially when there are plenty of other eateries nearby with similar dishes, so plenty of competitors for customers to choose from.
Update- tried their $15 breakfast menu and am happy to say that I'll be back! I ordered eggs benedict with smoked salmon. Generous portion for the price (normally $18.50) although the sauce was a little bit too tart for my liking but maybe others prefer it that way. The bread was ciabatta bread which was a little too toasted as the crusts were hard to cut through.
Look forward to trying other dishes on their $15 breakfast menu.

My sister introduced me to Safran today, the thing that really drawed her attention was the amazing $15 lunches and how much you get out of it. Tucked in between Archie's and Tatsumi which seems to be the more obvious choices (judging by the amount of people seated). But thought I'd give the recommendation a go. I ordered the Cajun chicken which is served with a salad, pita bread, and hummus. My sister orders the steak sandwich which came with chips and a salad. They were both huge for $15. My sister said is smaller than what she previously got but, to me is a pretty big portion already. The chicken was tender and coated in a nice Cajun paste and the pita bread with nice and soft. The steak was perfectly cooked, still pink on the inside but, could do with a bit of extra seasoning. We also got a iced mocha and iced coffee. Both were good ! But, I prefer mine less icey and more cream but, that's me.
We also noticed they do specials every night monday-thursday. And tapas are all $10 on Sunday nights. We're definitely coming back here for a tapas night. Compared to its competitors on the left and right who also offer $15 lunches, what safran offers in portions and taste gives you more value for your bucks. Definitely a great find.

Love the place, extremely professional and lovely atmosphere, can't fault the service or the food although I do prefer the old lunch menu or how they used to do some of the dishes such as the steak sandwich, in short I am a fan of Safran, I started going there in 2011 and they managed to keep me coming back. I would rate it five stars but a tad disappointed with lunch menu but it is still a great place to be. As always taste is subjective.
Dropped in here for a quick breakfast. I had a delicious white chocolate raspberry muffin. The environment was really relaxing and I was Impressed with the service :)
Had the vol au vent- the only vegetarian main- but it was definitely the best option nevertheless! Cute atmosphere with the candles and had a delicious cappuccino during dinner. My friend had some meat tapas which were apparently amazing although he couldn't finish them having no meat eaters to share with. I would definitely come back to try the mushroom risotto and there's also a vege lasagne option for vegetarians.
Have had dinner here a couple of times and overall had a great experience. They do a good range of Spanish tapas dishes that are perfect for sharing with a group. I've also tried their paella dish - lots of seafood in the dish, the flavour was slightly bland but enjoyed the meal overall. Definitely worth a try!

Turned up dead on twelve for a quick lunch. The lunch menu is $15 which is comparable to other places near by.
Service was fast and friendly. Decor is alright . Spanish tapas theme.
Ordered the panko crumbed squid. For $15 the value was great. However felt the squid was your over cooked & chew.. But still nice with the sauce.

Had a great Saturday lunch experience at Safran. We both had the Cajun chicken which was delicious with a good serving of salad and a really delicious hummus.
Service was very attentive and fast. It's a great option in Newmarket, still close to shopping but a nice relaxing detour. Would definitely love to return for dinner.
I had brunch here last week and ordered the french toast which tasted okay but I've definitely had better. The real standout for me was their service. They were friendly, attentive and really made you feel welcome.
An excellent choice for a pleasant dinner. The food is well cooked and the service excellent, prompt and efficient.
We indulged in the lamb salad which had a variety of flavours. It was not what we expected but was all the better for that. Th.e steak and paella dishes were all exactly what we ordered and expected.
Do leave room for the steamed ginger pudding. It's not exactly Spanish but it's pretty good.
My only quibble is that the menu is printed on dark paper and the restaurant lighting is pretty dim, so it's almost impossible to read.
Worth going ther ? Certainly is.

We walked passed and saw a spare table in the warm sun which attracted us to this place to be honest, so we sat down and wished the food was as good as the table in the sun
Boy was it good! We got three of the $15 meals, the eggs Benedict with salmon (which was on the breakfast menu that ended at 12, it was 12:20 but they still gladly let us order it which was nice)
We also got the Safron burger and the Tuscan Steak sandwich, all of it was so delicious
Overall I'm so happy that we came here, was the best lunch I've had in a long time and I'm so glad I work nearby because I can go there everyday if I want
My partner & I came here for breakfast, I had the French toast and he had the Safran Scramble - both meals were yum. Our coffees came out within 5mins of ordering, nice outdoor tables so you can enjoy the sun, friendly staff and it is responsibly priced.
Had breakfast here $14 spend great value but best of all was the food exceptional. Good coffee and polite service. Well done guys keep it up.
What a lucky and fantastic find. We bought a deal voucher for breakfast and was so impressed with this place we went back for dinner last night. Both occasions our waiting staff and Owner or Manager was very helpful and friendly. The service was quick and the food was YUM! The dip that came with the bread was too die for.
They also make great coffee, and even though I didn't have dessert last night the options looked amazing.
I will definitely go back there.
We had Dessert here last night & it was simply superb. If you have a sweet tooth, then the Cannelloni pancakes with chocolate mouse & hazelnuts filling finished off in green coco-coffee sauce with cream is a must! Service was fantastic, right from the time we approached the outdoor seating area to the end of the night. Staff were not over-bearing, but attentive & knowledgeable of their menu range & how its cooked. Will recommend & definitely be back with friends. Seating is generous in-doors that you not listening into other occupants conversations. Lots of candles & rustic feel. Highly recommend for upcoming Valentine's Day or even a first date! :)
Never disappointed here. While it's not fine dining, the food is very good, the atmosphere is charming and the service is very attentive. Nice touch with the complimentary shots of sambuca. All in all a consistently good experience.

This restaurant had a $12 special for lunch today, so my friend and I decided to try it out. The location is pretty, and it was nice to sit out in the sun today. The waiters were all very friendly and attended to us well. My friend ordered a burger which she said didn't taste as good as it looked. I, however, enjoyed the meatball fettuccine that I ordered, although my friend tried it and said the sauce was a bit oily. Overall, the food could be better, but it's not the worst, and I certainly enjoyed mine. The friendly service and location contributed to an enjoyable experience at this cafe.
I went to Safran last Tuesday for dinner and found it fantastic.
We were greeted immediately as we walked up to the front door and asked for our preference in where we were seated. The restaurant was busy but the service was still on point.
We were sat right next to the kitchen, it was the only free seats inside, which made for some great viewing of the chefs at work.
We had attentive service which wasn't too overbearing.
We ordered three mains to share for two people (no entrees) which was more than enough food. The calamari salad was soaked in sauce though which made the lettuce soggy and not very enjoyable to eat. The chicken liver salad was fantastic, the of the richness of the liver and lightness of feta, radishes and cherry tomatoes made for a great, tasteful combination. We also enjoyed the mussel fritters, great flavour!
Prices are reasonable and they offer free shots of Sambuca to end the night!
I will definitely be eating there again.
Great food, very nice service and good environment in general. I would definitely recommend the Spanish tapas and wines. As a positive comment, I would say the place should be a little less grey and minimalistic and should be more dressed up (Only my opinion) ^_^
We had Chicken Fettuccine and Paella tonight, mushroom rice ball as tapa, it was very nice. Everything is great, especially the Chicken Fettuccine, very rich, and creamy. Paella was very nice too, lots seafood, and veggie. I think the scotch fillet must be very good, I saw lots customer order it and everyone is happy with this dish. Next time could have a try. This restaurant also has special during week day, Monday is Pasta $15, Tuesday is Steak $20, Wednesday is Paella $20, Sunday all tapas $10.

Service was great, food was great too, prices for food and drinks are very reasonable and worth giving them a go, you won’t be disappointed.
They also do Gluten-free options there too.
In case of doubt double check, the waitresses are very friendly in those topics.

Friendly staff and cozy place. Great food! The crew is so friendly with kids and very accomodating. They even made a customised pizza flavour for my son. We’ll definitely go back and refer to some of our friends. 🙂❤️
Had an awesome dinner with my mum here on Mother’s day. We loved every bit of it, excellent service and food. Staffs are very sweet, they put a writing on the plate as I have requested in my booking. Overall, great experience and would highly recommend.
We had the Bottomless Brunch here and had a really nice time. The food was amazing and we liked that there were many different food options so you could either have something more like breakfast or lunch - whatever you felt like. The drinks were great too, too bad that you could only switch your drink once, I would have loved to try out the other drinks on the menu.
The waiters were friendly as well! I’d definitely come back for Bottomless Brunch here.
The service was excellent, however the meals we ordered were all underseasoned. However, we did enjoy the bacon carbonara.

Food and service were lovely, the Qebapa was delicious and very reasonably priced. I only wish there would have been more meat but otherwise the taste was amazing.
Dinner on a Saturday evening. We had the lamb rump and fillet steak. Both were excellent. Service was friendly and competent. Recommended.
Went for a bottomless brunch and was super impressed with the food and service. Frequent top ups and delicious cocktails. The food menu also had great variety in options. 10/10
I have done bottomless brunch at Safran Cafe twice now and they never disappoint. The food is delicious, they refill your drinks so quickly. Service is absolutely amazing, highly recommend this place!
