Service was very very good. We didn’t have to wait long at all and following instructions under level 2.5 during Covid-19 very clear.
Tasty, good portions and great coffee.
Auckland is in no shortage of great brunch spots so when choosing a place, it's a sin to pick somewhere that isn't going to satisfy your egg craving on a Saturday morning.
Thank you Bread and Butter for being there when I need it the most. Came in around 11am on the Sunday and it was busy but not so much so that we had to wait around more than 5 min for a table. The service was super friendly and cheerful and the coffees were excellent. Ordered the Bakers Breakfast and honestly, it was a revelation. Chuck a bit of hollandaise sauce on the side and you have yourself an eggs benny on steroids. A well deserved 10/10.
One of my favorite brunch spots! The location isn't particularly great but once you're inside, you can just focus on the great food and great coffee, served to you by very friendly and attentive staff! I would definitely recommend the pain perdu if you have a sweet tooth like me... I'm already looking forward to having it again!
Last month, I organised a Brunch Club, held at Bread & Butter Bakery and Cafe in Grey Lynn!
Click the link to read more about our brunch and what dishes we enjoyed! :)
We visit bread & butter quite frequently as a family. It has a menu that is good for all 4 generations of our family. And the food tastes great of course too. Their coffee is delicious.
It can get a little packed on a weekend, but it is Auckland and brunch - especially at a popular café always is packed.....
They’re great with kids here too, although no specific kids area, they have colouring in and kids meals
First time I have been here found it accidentally.
Went in staff were friendly and great ordered eggs Benedict with bacon and a long black .
Plenty of seating
Coffee came out fast and perfect
Eggs Benedict hot and tasty , the sauce and eggs were perfect , I will be back .
Very enjoyable atmosphere if you like a busy place. The food was nice, my daughter had the kids brekkie and I had the Eggs pakora both meals were nice. Also reasonably priced as well and the girls were lovely. We will return
Had the but protein smoothie and the bakers breakfast. The nut smoothie was super delicious a thicker consistency would have been heaven but that’s just personal preference! The bakers breakfast had a lot on the plate as you can see I struggled to finish it but it was nice none the less. Eggs toast mushroom tomato bacon and sausage... who can go wrong right!! Next time I’m trying the sweet option :-)
Great little place for breakfast super friendly staff and yummy food - we had avocado breakfast bowl and the breakfast of champignons - the potatoes in the breakfast bowl were next level
Solely based on the delicious mocha and the great service I received. Great tasting mocha and can actually taste the chocolate. Well balanced. Look forward to trying everything else available.
My favourite place in Grey Lynn. A highlight is their home made hash browns. My all time favourite from the menu is the French toast. All the bread for sale is made on site and fresh. The staff are extremely friendly too.
The food here is awesome!!! We had breakfast here yesterday on a very busy Sunday. This is by far the best breakfast menu I have seen. The staff were amazing and the food was Soooo good. There was 5 of us and we had the corned beef hash-wich (so delicious) the French toast and the Korean chicken with kimchi pancake. Everyone was very impressed with their food. I have been telling everyone how great the food and service is. It was so busy and the staff were so on to it. Will be back for sure.
Dined at Bread & Butter for lunch the other day and the food was delicious! They offer scrumptious brunch options including favourites like French toast, bacon Benedict, as well as healthy lunch choices like the Buddha bowl (pictured)
There’s a selection of cabinet food on display including tarts, cakes, croissants and obviously, bread!
The cafe has a rustic bakery feel to it and very cosy, the sun shines through the window and brings warmth to the ambience.
Been here a few times for brunch in the weekends and they are always very busy so be prepared to wait for a bit. Food is pretty good although it is quite pricey. The bread and butter pudding is very nice, order it every time!
What a great busy cafe we found! This is a place to go for a flavour bomb, the Omellete was delicious and the pizza was sooo good. We came here to use the Entertainment book voucher but we'll definitely be back without a voucher! *bookmark*
Came here over Easter weekend. Friendly service. Excellent coffee. I ordered the buttermilk hotcake with buffalo yoghurt, blueberries, citrus curd, pistachios and maple syrup. It was delicious. One minor thing was that it could’ve done with just a bit more syrup for my liking. But hey, I left nothing on the plate. I hadn’t been here in years, however I definitely won’t leave the next visit so long.
Excellent food, atmosphere and service. Not too pricey for the quality either. Quirky menu with not the usual cafe offerings. Can get hard to find a table around peak times.
The cafe has a great buzz, lots of parking, very friendly and helpful staff. I will be returning to try more on the menu.
I highly recommend the Buddha bowl with chicken, full of flavor!
Amazing food.. the eggs Beni and the smashed avo on toast was soooooo good.
Coffee was really nice too.. it was a busy Sunday morning when we arrived but we got seated quickly with coffee order taken..
will definitely be returning to this place!
This place just gets better and better. Outstanding breakfast. Try the porridge and eggs Ben. They also have an excellent bakery which sells a superb selection of bread. The tastiest in NZ. Highly recommended.
Loved everything about this place. Stunning decor, food TO DIE FOR. Great range of yummy breads and cakes. I love the separate room full of vintage plates makes it feel a bit VIP lol. Great vibe.
We went here for lunch on Saturday 26th as a group of 4 adults and 1 child.
Summary: Nice setting, great food selection and flavours, good service. Would I go back? Yes.
Ambience: I like the setting, the natural lighting, the industrial themed decor and it's not noisy either.
Food: Having a child with allergies means questions of the menu. These were answered well and timely. I eat low carb high fat and there were good options for this. The food arrived for the entire table within good time and together, although I suspect the hot chocolate for that child was forgotten as it was ordered first but delivered last. Taste wise, the omelette I had was filling and fluffy, bratwurst cooked perfectly and the iced chocolate gorgeous and fatty.
Service: We were seated promptly, menus provided and water bought out quickly. There was some confusion with drinks but I think this was more attributable to a new staff member than anything else.

Been many times and loved big breakfast but since going Vegan 9 months ago (silly me hehe) I have to eat sides to make up a meal, but still tasty.
Gf bread, avo, mushrooms, hash and tomato (which oddly is not cooked tomato) $$ way to eat but still I manage to get breaky in me while my non vegan friends devour the other great options.
Licensed too so I'm a happy camper 😙😗😍
An attractively designed space and great wait staff give this cafe an edge. I ordered the pumpkin, capsicum & chorizo soup of the day and my daughter had an Italiano Classico pizza which were both as expected. The coffee is great. I'd definitely visit here again if I was in the area.
Stopped by for a late afternoon lunch just before 3pm, not much food left out in the cabinet on display, but the kitchen was still running.
Staff were very friendly; we were greeted at the door upon arrival and quickly seated with menus and water, great start. Excellent service - especially by our male waiter with the glasses.
Ordered the smashed avo with a side of salmon, and the baked market fish. Both dishes arrived within 15 mins, poached eggs were runny and the fish was noooice with the crumbed topping 👌
Cranberries in the avo were not favoured, and the pumpkin purée tasted slightly sour in places, I would have preferred a lemon wedge to sprinkle that zing myself! Portion size was average compared to price.
Cute light fixtures, nice sitting at the window tables on a sunny day. Neat little spot for weekend brunch.
Bread & Butter is always busy no matter which day of the week you go. The cafe has an industrial feel and love the beautiful baked goodies filled cabinet. First thing I noticed when we sit down was the water bottle the staff brought to our table was disgusting ....it got scum inside the bottle (refer to the photo below) and I looked around , apparently it's in most of the water bottles....they look like they haven't been cleaned for years...
Anyways, coffee was great and we loved the presentation of the food. We had the market fish of the day and omelette, the fish was perfectly cooked , however the omelette was a bit over cooked.
BEST brunch, and will making the trip back from over the bridge again for sure. Lovely staff, great atmosphere and delicious food. Honestly could not fault the team here & double thumbs up for being so accommodating of tiny humans.
lovely food and good experience. Nice cafe!
Waffle is high recommend!
There is few people on Sunday morning
Good place to have a rest and drink coffee.
This place is lovely! It looked a bit like a warehouse, industrial styled. It had a vibrant and energetic vibe, and was bustling with people on Saturday morning.
Despite how busy they were, we were attended to and seated very promptly by the friendly staffs. The selection of the baked goods were extensive and just mouthwatering! The menu was equally appetising.
My husband ordered the farmer's breakfast which literally had everything - sausage, bacon, egg, mushrooms, grilled tomato, and toast. All the ingredients were cooked well (especially the eggs!), and it was so filling that he struggled to finish it.
I had the smashed avocado with feta cheese and poached egg on sourdough. They were very generous with the amount of avocado served, which was good quality and perfectly creamy. We also could not resist getting a chocolate almond croissant from the cabinet to share - it was one of the best ones I've had - very almond-ey, filled with a rich chocolate paste.
The caramel nut protein was a bit small at the price $9.50, but I loved the thick chunky texture of it, and it was very filling.
All in all, definitely have nothing bad to say about the place. The food was hearty and well made, but probably lacked a bit of finesse in terms of flavour, that makes it standout along so many amazing cafes. We would not mind visiting again for afternoon tea/coffee though :)
By far the best coffee I've ever had, and so cute!! I'm obsessed with their B.L.A.T's, you need to try! And there's a bread and butter on the shore too!
Awesome #Food # Coffee and #Service.
Favourite place now.
Love this place.
Love the atmosphere so cool.
Keep it up guys.
😍😍😍😍😉😉😉
I had the waffle special! It was beautifully presented, and tasty! Massive portion sizes!
Bread and butter have friendly staff and tasty coffee! There is always parking always available outside!
I keep coming back and I'm never disappointed!
This place was super busy when we went for lunch today! Thankfully we had booked a table as we were a large group and we were given enough time to figure out what we wanted to eat before ordering :) I ordered the Pulled Pork in a pretzel bun which was a nice big serve (which I hoped for since it was close to $20) and was super tasty. I also ordered the House Lemonade which was freshly squeezed and delicious :) I was also able to have a taste of their Bread & Butter pudding as we got the last 2 available and it was sooooo good.
Overall, Bread & Butter Bakery had a lovely atmosphere and had delicious food and drinks. You do have to go early if you want to choose from the whole menu as they do run out of items, but I will definitely be back! :D
This place is bustling with people and parking can be difficult especially during peak meal times.
Their cabinet menu is extensive and plentiful.
The seared tuna salad I got was delicious.
Beautifully seared tuna. Lovely mix of salad vegetables. I like how it wasn't just full of lettuce or mesclun like some salads.
This place is always so busy.
Such a variety of bakery food to choose from both cabinet and main menu. Love their savoury bread😘😘 great selections of both sweets and savoury bread.
Three men. Three Top Notch Meals.
Firstly the atmosphere and the service was on point for a Saturday morning, it was humming but we didn't have to wait long for our orders to arrive.
The waitress Shaz was trialing and in my honest opinion you've found a keeper. The male waiter had better banter than a sheep farmer from Otago. He even called my mate a Champion.
The smashed avocado was fresh and with a touch of self seasoning was a great way to start your Saturday,
moving onto the Breakfast of Champignons my mate said that it was smooth and well balanced but lacked that outstanding flavour. Finishing off with the Baker's Breakfast we found it was a solid contender in the big breakfast wars in Auckland, everything fresh and quality ingredients.
Overall this is a definite brunch place to take your girlfriend to. Or a tinder date. Good luck.
Had both breakfast and lunch meals here, including the Eggs Benedict, both the burgers, the juices, smoothies AND the cabinet food sweet and savoury, and can honestly say it's all really yum and very well prices! Cool, bright atmosphere! Offers a range of different foods, from healthy to a big filling lunch! Love coming here on a sunday or for a Friday morning breakfast before work! Love it! Would suggest the chicken or pulled pork burger :)
Came here for lunch with my friends and it's was a really lovely place. Enjoyed my time here. It had a relaxing feel to it. It wasn't too busy or noisy. Had comfortable seating. The food was really good and was a reasonable price. I had the sides as my lunch, which was - creamy mushroom, scrambled egg, and has brown. Then I had dessert which was bread and butter pudding. My friends had the - chicken schnitzel sandwich and also the bakers breakfast. To drink - iced coffee, apple juice and cuppocino.
Overall - Food (4/5), Service (4/5), Ambience (4/5).
Popped in here for lunch with a friend and was surprised at the variety on the menu. Previously I have only been for some of the delicious bakery items in the counter. We had the quinoa and halloumi salad and the Waygu beef burger. Both totally hit the spot and were delicious!
We got the wagu burger and the squid and the house pressed juice and it was amazing!!!! The service was awesome too. Definitely going there again!
Came here for brunch on a Sunday and of course it was busy. However the staff dealt with it so well I guess thats because they're probably used to it. We had to go on a waiting list and waited for only 10 minutes which wasn't bad at all considering how busy it was.
The food was great, I had their snicker waffles which was good (they change the flavour often). It came with cream which I didn't know as it wasn't mentioned so I guess that was the downside for me since I'm not a fan of cream. Maybe they could've asked if I wanted some but that's just me being fussy. It did get a bit sickening at the end but that's what you would expect from a snickers waffle. My partner for the breakfast for champiognes (which is French for mushrooms). It was pretty good, came in a nice sauce and a descent portion as well.
As I mentioned, the staff were great and very helpful. It was a bit noisy and very compact but the food was worth it.
Would love to come back for more!
They have the greatest hot chocolate. I ordered a bowl hot chocolate at a reasonable price. The first time I was there was 4 weeks ago. I would so come back.

Lots of different choices on the menu and in the cabinet. Great coffee. Environment was nice and chic. Will definitely come back and try other items on the menu.
Really love the food here. We had the creamy mushrooms with eggs and bacon, and the Mexican breakfast. Both were absolutely delicious. The coffee was superb and the service was lovely. Definitely a new favourite!
This is arguably one of the best places for brunch in central Auckland! Here's why:
Food - amazing! Flavoursome, good portions, fresh and health. Also lots of options
Ambience - lively, excellent indoor/outdoor options
Service - fast, friendly, attentive without being really overbearing
Parking - ample, even on a busy weekend morning
I'll definitely be coming back soon!
Their breakfast/lunch menu has a lot of options along with having many other options in the counter. We went there with some friends and tried a few different things. The Bakers Breakfast and the Farmers Breakfast were the best.
Always greeted with a smile and a big hello. Love the variety of food, from the menu or cabinet, the food is always beautifully presented and fresh. The coffee is near perfect.
Really delicious food, friendly staff who are open to menu changes. Often packed in the weekend so expect to wait for a table if you're with a group. I've been here quite a few times and the coffee is great and couldn't fault the food. Usually get the smashed avocado which is fab but have also had the museli and the breakfast salad, all which are delish.
Lots of choices, never been disappointed, good service, good coffee. Always dependable & some great bakery treats to take away (try the bagel rolls).
Delish eggs benny with just the right amount of rich hollandaise and smoked manuka bacon, coupled with a coffee bowl. Delish food, great service, unique interior and a good spot for remote working.
We usually come here and grab coffee and cabinet food but decided to dine in this morning!
I ordered the creamy mushrooms and my boyfriend ordered the waffles.
First few bites of mine were delicious, but I grew tired of the creamy mushrooms and there was no escape. Literally everything was Saturated in the sauce.
Waffles looked delicious but the actual waffles themselves were super bland and definitely not worth $20!
Coffee was delicious as usual. Also this place is constantly packed and it's hard to find a table/have a conversation so be warned!
This is one of my favorite cafes in Auckland. The cafe is big and ambience wonderful. It is child friendly and if you even want to be away from the crowd you can sit in the private plate room. Always see people having their mothers group catch ups there.
They have great pastries and the coffee's great. I have tried most stuff on their menu and I enjoy all of them, especially the eggs bene and their smashed avocado.
They have the most wonderful staff, really friendly and it's one of the places I always go to at least twice a week. They're pretty busy during the weekends so pays to ask if you can reserve if you have a big group.
A very busy cafe with lots of delicious choices both in the cabinets and on the menu. We ordered eggs benedict with nz smoked salmon & sauteed spinach, crispy squid and kids pancakes. All was good but the crispy squid was the best. Would love to go back to try their waffles next time.
I love coming to this place! It is nicely hidden away from all the chaos of the main road!
The place is huge for a cafe, nicely laid out and all the decorations are nice to look at. Perfect for couples, families and groups of friends!
Service is always swift, staff are friendly and always smiling. The drinks and food are overall great! The 0.5 taken off is that the eggs here are always slightly too overcooked for my preference.
Great cafe! I would happily recommend it to everyone!
Fabulous place for brunch or to grab some lunch on the go as there's always fresh buns and rolls in the cabinets. As well as fresh bread to take home for toast! Yummy fresh juices! Great range of food to choose from. The side of haloumi is always generous!! Eggs are always cooked well the times I have been. Love all the dishes I have tried so far.
Had a really really good experience from bread & butter! Food was exquisitely good and prices were reasonable. Loved the atmosphere in the place as well! 5/5 one of the best eggs benedict i've had in Auckland 👌🏼👌🏼 highly recommended and i'm definitely coming back for more!
This is such a lovely little oasis betwixt hardware stores and carparks. The coffee is excellent, the mushrooms on toast make an amazing breakfast, and the counter cake selection is amongst the best. The sandwiches from the counter are also delicious - the ham and cheese is a regular fave for me. I highly recommend a visit after a meander through Farro.
Would come back again to try other things on the menu!
FOOD:
The Avocado Breakfast Salad I ordered was really yummy - I'd usually avoid anything with bacon but for some reason I didn't mind so much about it being in this dish. The bacon was nice and crispy, and added something extra to the leaves and tomatoes. Also, they give you a generous amount of avocado but not so much so that it was overwhelming.
I tried the Quinoa and Haloumi Salad but didn't like that one because of the leaves they use in that one. The Haloumi was good though. I didn't try the Fish Tacos myself but my uncle said the wrap itself was the best he's had from anywhere. They give you 2 big tacos, which would definitely fill you up.
SMOOTHIE:
The smoothie (Banana and Berry) I wouldn't recommend - it was veery sweet and tasted artificial :(
ENVIRONMENT + STAFF:
Loved the environment! It's quite a large place compared to places like Dear Jervois or Frasers so there's a lot more seating available. The staff were friendly and acceptable xD Nothing amazing and not terrible either.
I want to come back to try their pastries to see if it adds any more points to the rating! They look really nice, but are on the pricey side for a small pastry. Hope they will be worth it though :D
Bread and butter bakery is my go-to cafe, being within close proximity to central Auckland it is a prime location to meet up with friends. Wonderful atmosphere, the place is always buzzing (which is a good sign) food and beverages do not take long to come out and the service is always reliable, warm and friendly. The food is fresh and of excellent quality which is evident in the flavours present. Keep it up bread and butter, Auckland needs more Cafes like you.
Good food, good service, good coffee, nice deco, good ambience! What more can you ask for?
I have tried their big breakfast, avocado smash (generous with the avo!) and the creamy mushrooms so good too. If you can fit something extra, do get a croissant! Buttery goodness.
This place is rather big but can get quite busy too. However there is farro and a nice home decor shop beside if you need to walk around while waiting for a seat.
One down side is that some of their pastries are more on the expensive side. Looks so good though!
Visit BnB with my family, cafe was busy but we managed to get a seat. Service was great and prompt. Ordered the ice coffee with extra shot, mango shake, pulled pork baguette and smoke fish pasta. Food was good and the portion size was average, but have to say it is a bit pricey. Also takeaway some pastries as well and found out they gave us the wrong ones when we got home....

Goooo Bread and Butter! Lovely space , great service and the best eggs in town ! Get in.. The place has a great environment and has baking to die for Sarah Forsyth #g7
Had such an amazing breakfast here the other day. The Mixed mushrooms are scrumptious. Service is fantastic too. Sarah Forsyth #gidschallenge
Such a pretty layout and atmosphere. I love the interior design, and colour of their sofa. The food was really nice, I ordered mixed mushroom, waffle-icious with extra hashbrown , and chunky chip. My most favourite dish is the waffle.
Definately one of the best cafe's in Grey Lynn for breakfast. My favourite is sauteed mushrooms served with bacon and poached egg. The smashed avocado is also very good, however counter service needs to be improved. On my last visit, the order taker was flustering to work out how to put hollandaise sauce on the side for my eggs, and I was left waiting at the counter for a few minutes while she tried to enter my order into the computer, before I could complete my coffee order. The food however is excellent, and the ambience is just fine. A lovely place for brekie and a morning coffee. With a few tweaks to the service, I would give them 4.5 star.
While my Farmers breakfast was nice, it didn't seem anything extra special, just slices of cheese, tomato etc laid out next to each other. Having said that I will definitely be back to try some of the counter pastries or the lunch menu which looked a little more exciting.
My friend was visiting Auckland for the weekend and we decided to head out to get something to eat. Being nearly midday we wanted something that offered both lunch and breakfast options, so we went to Bread and Butter. So glad we did! My friend had the creamy mushrooms and said they were deliciously flavoured and not "over the top" with the cream. I was very happy with my Farmers Breakfast, a platter of prosciutto, Swiss cheese, tomato, avocado, toasted ciabatta and I had a poached egg instead of the boiled one. (As I do) I loved the mixture of food and flavours - I certainly wasn't bored. Service was fast and friendly - a humming little cafe that I'd have no hesitation in returning to.
Super nice atmosphere, loved the interior and the way it was laid out, staff were also v helpful.
I ordered the fish tacos and a short bread biscuit and both were delicious! I wish I had asked for some Tabasco sauce for the tacos because would've been ever better with an extra bit of spice, regardless it was super filling and tasty :) the shortbread was also a nice easy sweet treat to finish lunch off
Definitely going back to try the other dishes on the menu!
Had the mushrooms with poached egg on ciabatta with pesto. Sooooo good. The mushroom sauce was delicious, not too rich but so moorish. The ciabatta was also perfect to use to soak up the sauce with. Poached egg was perfect. Would highly recommended. Keen to come back and try more off the menu, the waffles sounded pretty good!
Stopped in here for a Sunday lunch and really enjoyed it. Got seated immediately even though it was pumping. The place has a really nice vibe and didn't feel overly crowded even though every table was taken. All the food was really great. Reasonably priced, and plenty of flavour in the meals. It was just painfully slow. Which I guess is fair enough considering it was a Sunday lunch time, but even the orange juice and ginger beer took 20 minutes to get to our table. We were happy and comfortable at the table so it wasn't an issue for us. I would recommend this place if you don't mind hanging out for a while at the cafe.
Service was good food took a while to come out though. Mocha was standard, the savoury brioche was very good but not enough filling inside, the smoked salmon benny was yum my only fault with it was that it should be served with an english muffin. Spinach was a nice addition to a classic combination and eggs were cooked to perfection. Overall a good result but was not blown away especially for the prices! Nice local though 😀
Great surroundings and a chilled vibe. Food was nice and tasty. Service was great and I didnt have to wait long. I had the mixed mushrooms which was pleasant to eat.
Really nice cafe. Great atmosphere and as we went on a Sunday for brunch the place was packed but got a seat almost straight away. Good selection on the menu and staff were friendly. I ordered the avocado on bread with salad and a poached egg and I added a side of bacon - was very nice but I had to pay an extra $2.50 for the bacon and it was a tiny piece worth nothing so that was annoying other than that was good.
Amazing food and presentation, but service is shocking. Takes about 10 minutes before being acknowledged, then another twenty minutes before ASKING if you can order, Especially if your sitting outside. Luckily the food and coffee is amazing!
It's a lovely place to visit, the staff are so warms and friendly. The food is yummy, my favourites are the Thai beef salad and the fish soft shell tacos. The coffee is good and so are their own fruit and vegetable juices.
I'm hoping to have lunch there tomorrow, and reminds me you need to book if you want a table here .
La comida es excelente. Vale la pena disfrutar de un delicioso desayuno acá.
con seguridad regreso y recomiendo éste sitio.
I great place to endulge yourself. Breakfast is delicious and service is great.
Excellent service, food and coffee. Lots of parking big plus.. They took reservation for family group of nine the day before. Despite been very busy and our table not quite ready still manged to get us seated within 5 mins of our booking.
Waffles outstanding plus smashed avocado with the bacon is yummy. Good luck trying leave without taking a few pastry from the display.. We will be back..
Modern local spot, very busy with an upbeat vibe. Despite being at capacity (midday Saturday) we were served both drinks and food within 10 minutes of arriving which we were highly impressed with. The food is plated nicely and cooked to perfection, the staff were friendly and always available to assist. An array of quality cabinet food is also on offer alongside a decent sized menu, overall would highly recommend paying a visit!
Boy is this place popular! My friend and I arrived at 9am and by 10am there was a queue of people waiting for a table. It's easy to see why many people flock here... Tasteful furnishings, a counter full of sumptuous baked items (mmm... An apple and cinnamon Berliner...) and the convenience of being located next to Farro's.
I ordered a simple breakfast of scrambled eggs with sides of spinach and potato hash cake and it was simply delicious! The grainy bread had a great texture - thick and perfectly toasted. The coffee was faultless.
Probably the only let down on this visit was being seated in a tight corner. Despite feeling conscious of keeping in my elbows, the food experience was worth the effort. Would I come here again? You betcha!
Great ambience, lovely service and the food was pretty delicious. I've only been here once and I was quite impressed, but I wasn't blown away. Id like to try a few more dishes to make up my mind, but I do have to say I like it and recommend!
Lively warm cafe, with a heck of a lot of delicious goods to tempt you at the counter. Fast courteous service, great coffee and food. Nice mix of seating arrangements. Hidden away off the main road but this allows for easy parking. Great spot, will be back often.
A great place to visit with family or friends. It's the second time that we've been to Bread & Butter and we've thoroughly enjoyed the food and hospitality.
B&B's menu offers a great selection of breakfast and lunch items (including pizza) and drinks. While I'm not a coffee drinker my wife raved about her coffee as did our friends.
If you don't feel like a meal but want a snack or something to just tie you over choose something from the cabinet. There is a good spread of freshly baked breads, pastries and cakes (amongst other goodies) that you can select from.
B&B takes bookings and were able to accommodate us as 9 adults and two toddlers. (Baby friendly and provides high chairs if they're unoccupied).
Plenty of parking around.

Luv this place. Not squished when this place is busy. Great food, good coffee. Enjoy the menu, we both can find choices we like. Becoming a favourite place for us.
Love this place! Immediately upon walking in I thought of how welcoming and inviting the place was. I couldn't fault the layout and look of it, I was duly impressed. The cabinet food looked delicious and I had to refrain myself from over buying as my tendency is to try to take a few items home as well as want to eat there too!
We had decided on having lunch there so someone had come to ask us to take a seat and they would take our order. They have five elements coffee and it was done to perfection. One of my favourite coffees so far! We ordered the burger and the pulled pork sandwich to share and I wish they had more flavour to it but I still enjoyed it enough.
I would definitely come back here. Even for the coffee alone it's worth it! I didn't buy any treats to take home so I think next time I'll definitely have to buy a few things for a nice treat!
Oohhhh my god! I've been here twice now, both for brekky! Their mushrooms are soooooo good!!! Always have to get a side order of those babies now! Always friendly, mouth watering presentation and such a relaxed, cool atmosphere. Always busy though! Had to wait for a table - but worth it!
Oh my goodness, never thought I'd find such amazing food in a wee little nook in grey lynn! Had the eggs Benedict and it was beautifully done, everyone that ate there got a whole lot of love and care from the staff! Would definitely go out of my way to eat there again!
Fantastic!
Went here on a Sunday for lunch and think we were rather lucky to get a table instantly, as it was very busy! Staff were really attentive and friendly. Decor was really neat, LOVED the wallpaper! Ordered from the menu (maybe a bit too many items with eggs on the breakfast side, but still plenty to choose from) - the food was delicious and the coffee was good.
Will definitely be back again!

We were in the area so popped into Bread & Butter early on Saturday morning. Bread & Butter is very much tucked away from the main strip and if you don’t live in the area, you’d probably never know it was there. As it was still early, there were lots of tables free. Drinks orders were taken quickly and arrived immediately.
The decor is really nice and modern with whimsical farmhouse touches, I loved the giant whisks as light fittings. Lots of cool things to look at.
I ordered the Mixed Mushroom dish and he ordered the Baker’s Breakfast with a side of chutney. He enjoyed his breakfast, but even with the addition of chutney, found it to be a bit dry. The size was good, it looked almost as if it was too much food for the plate. The hash brown looked like it had come straight from McDonald’s. I happen to like McDonald’s hash browns, it was just a bit unexpected.
I adored my mushroom dish. The creamy balsamic sauce was divine and there was heaps of sauce. The herby salad was a nice touch to cut through the rich meal, though the ciabatta was a wet sponge. It could have been any kind of bread. Eggs on both plates were beautifully cooked.
As we were wrapping up, it started to get really busy with the mid-morning brunch crowd. I noticed that all the kids were eating pizzas and they have lots of interesting toys to keep them occupied. Seems very kid-friendly. The pastries at the counter looked lovely but we were too full to think about taking anything home with us.
We had an EB voucher which knocked a bit off the bill but I would happily come back to pay full price if I was in the area.
Really? I'm struggling to understand the reviews below!
Hubby and I went here for brunch this morning. I think the fact that they were flat out and any tables that became vacant, didn't stay vacant for long, speaks for itself. It was your typical busy cafe on a Saturday morning. Ok, it may be a little pricier than other places, but the food is awesome, so is the coffee. Service was second to none, we were seated at a high table when we first arrived, and then after a little while the waitress was able to find us a low table to sit at. We waited less than 15 minutes for our meals, that is more than acceptable! We would definitely dine here again, in fact, it may just have become our new favourite brunch place!
This is the best mix of both worlds - great coffee as you find it in New Zealand and the great bread as you'd find in Europe. This must be the best bread you can find in New Zealand. Unfortunately it doesn't deserve to call itself sustainable or eco-friendly as it offers and promotes dairy & meat. Hopefully that awareness will raise and they will adjust their offers.
Fantastic in every way!
After easy parking (which can often be a nightmare for other Richmond Road locations) the first thing that really impressed me about this place was the decor. Rolling pin door handles, whisk light shades, very cool. We were greeted by a very friendly host and coffee orders were taken immediately...
Then came the hard part, choosing the food. Glancing around the cafe it all looked great. The menu read really yummy but then there was also this counter of amazing filled rolls and freshly prepared treats. Hard to choose so I satisfied my instant hunger with a BLAT pretzel roll (OMG these are good) while I waited for my order of freshly cooked eggs on toast.
Coffee (new brand called 5 elements) was perfection. The cooked food was also amazing. Service was fantastic and a lovely lady called Issy (maybe the owner) made sure everything was great for us and made recommendations on the breads that are worth listening too. She knows what's awesome!!
The most interesting thing is the reasonable price! Their cooked food is brilliant value, possibly even too cheap? Love this Place!
Overall I cannot fault this new addition to the neighborhood. Well done. It is cafes like this that make me so happy to live in Auckland!
This is one of the best cafe and bakery in
Auckland. Great environment, great coffee great food.
Try the Salmon with with potatoes, any eggs,
and their cheesecake . Well done and keep up
the great work!
One of our favourite cafés in Auckland! Great atmosphere, friendly and helpful staffs and most importantly great food!! Tried pretty much everything on their menu now, everything was delicious! Highly recommend their ginger latté! Devine!!
Can't really fault this local favourite, it's always full, even if you go early, and it has heaps of tables! Had the omelette with ham, cheese and mushrooms and it was hearty and tasty.. The smoothies come in funky jars, the cafe has a great vibe, and there's always a good selection of interesting cafe goers present! Definitely check out the cabinet selection, plenty of delicious looking pastries and breads to choose from, highly recommended!
Been to this place for many years. Always awesome. Always satisfied. No surprise that there are always busy. On our last visit, unbeknown to us that the wait staff forgot about our food order. An observant manager spotted us looking around and checked on us. Quickly sorted the missing order. Come to apologize multiple times. We assured them that it’s all good. No problems. These things happened. The manager insisted not to charge us for the coffee. Wow. Not many managers and or restaurants would do this. 5 stars indeed.
Great croissant a real generous filled product , coffee was at a good standard . Great space indoors very comfortable for a rainy day catch up , not noisy.
Love the decor and ambience of the cafe. The coffee was good and also the cream brûlée donut! We tried two dishes from the food menu (crispy corn fritter and Eton mess), not quite like them, sorry. However, the cabinet foods look great and We will come back to try out. Thank you.
Very busy place. The cabinet food always run out quickly. Decent coffee. Enjoy the cafe setting and decorations. Love to come back more often. Managed to sample few varieties of dishes. Good family place to hang out. This cafe advertised as children friendly. I do not see many toys or any playground for young children to enjoy.
Bread and butter is a nice place to go to the cabinet food is reasonably priced. They also had menu food. The staff were nice and helpful. I would definitely go back next time. They also had a vegan option which was cool although I didn't get it.
Amazing tasty food, smashed avo out of the park, Portuguese tarts sweet-az!! Smoothies next level!!!
This is one of our favourite cafes! Although the menu changes seasonally, the food is always great. The staff are always friendly and helpful, and the coffee is great. Part of the same group as Melba, B & B is worth the drive and the money.
There’s also fresh bread and baked goods available in the cabinet.
Personal recommendation: try the house hash brown!
A random find through Google search. We were surprised by the taste and quality of the food. The fusion twists were definitely worth it!!
The bread was fresh, the coffee was great, the hot chocolate was yum.
The eggs Benny was delicious and the chorizo fusion dish was so flavourful, I was stunned haha.
If you’re looking for some really good brekkie/lunch, head down here.
Food and coffee are always exquisite but the best part about Bread and Butter is the fantastic staff. Always happy and cheerful, rember our names and usual orders and most of all are fantastic with our son who has extra needs. Really puts a smile on our face whenever we visit in the morning.
Thank you all so much.
Lovely cafe with friendly helpful staff. I love their green smoothie 😋 and their rolls and sandwiches. We've also tried the berry and white chocolate brioche!
I had the French toast and it was spectacular, I loved all the components of the dish and they combined in a delicious way. I also got a loaf of sourdough bread which was very good as well. Would definitely recommend and will be back

As a Portuguese expat in New Zealand, I obviously had to taste the Portuguese tarts on display in the cabinet. I was impressed with their quality, but did find the dough was not as light and crispy as back home. Still good, nonetheless! The coffee is delicious and note that if you order a large flat white, you get it in a bowl! For the main, I had the crispy corn fritters and boy was I impressed! Don't be fooled by the photo where all you see is the scrumptious scrambled eggs. The fritters underneath managed to stay crisp all the way through to my last bite. The middle Eastern flavors were the icing on the cake. In addition, for a full house, the service sure was not delayed and was done with a smile on their faces. Well done!
We found Bread & Butter to be a super-vibrant eatery in the heart of Grey Lynn; an awesome selection in every department from sweet to savoury, a brunch menu full of temptations. It really felt like a bustling eatery and authentic bakery.
The staff we encountered were friendly and genuinely cared about our experience. For example we found the base on our chicken pie slightly undercooked, and when passing on that feedback it was taken in good spirits the way it had been intended. But the food apart from that quibble was beyond stellar; the big “Baker’s Breakfast” one of the best versions I Can remember. The sausage was well appointed, seasoned and cooked, while the fresh toasted bread from their kitchen really lifted the whole plate. The custard tarts on the counter were too tempting to pass up so I had one of those, while my partner had his creamy chicken pie and his own indulgence of both an apple juice and and iced chocolate, served in pretty mason glassware.
Given the selection and how warm and pleasant the whole experience was, I have no hesitation to say I hope to return in future when next visiting Auckland.
Nice place for a breakfast and brunch!
