Was recommended this place by a work colleague and boy what a treat. The tap range of beers was great. Never seen Miami Brut on tap until now. Service was also at attentative and friendly.
We went this restaurant after the movie at the ridgeway cinema just across the road.
The kitchen was closed so had some wines.
Great wine selection with reasonable price.
I didn't expect this place that much because of the photos of this res.
I strongly suggest to change the photos of this res.
It looks much better than shown on the photos.
I will visit this place again and try some food next time.
Such a Lovely place in a lovely street out of city (but) not too far at all!
Cosy brick walls, warm ambience, would be great for a winters night... The wine list is interesting and my Spanish wine was delicious while my friend's Shiraz from Adelaide was too.
Had a peek of the food menu and looks good too! My new favourite spot.
Stafford Rd Wine Bar is a great little place to
meet friends for a drink and a little bite. Last week they had a special Christmas dinner event that I think they do every year,
We had 5 courses, glass of wine with each dish and it was only $100 per person, well worth it.
Love the wine list. Love the cocktails. Love the food. Come here during summer and enjoy the warmth outside with a bottle of wine/champagne; or cosy up in front of the fire on a brisk winter night with a martini. Service is a bit of a hit and miss sometimes... great when it's busy! I prefer when it's quiet..
I've been here several times, good wine and cosy atmosphere. The menu is updated with the seasons and is always tasty. I've had several dishes including the crumbed olives, cheese, meat board, duck and beef flatbread!
Funky little bar, great place to sit outside when the afternoon sun is setting. The tapas are delicious. We drank various IPA beers and a clientele was a 30 somethings vibe.
Really good little place, which probably explains why it can be hard to get a table - especially on a Thursday / Friday night. Delicious tapas, fantastic place for an afterwork drink and bite to eat. Get there!
Visited for the second time tonight and I am afraid I may become an addict!
Lovely selection of reds (and others too, I am sure, though I'll admit I didn't really look at the other drinks - or we'd have been waiting all night to begin!). Plates perfect for sharing, beautiful and inviting (do try the salmon, and the bread!) - the experience completed by the warm and impressive service from staff.
Tonight after finishing a glass of wine each and deliberating having a second glass, one lovely lady saw our hesitation and suggested having a further half glass each. Of course we did.
We had a great time and they are definitely worth the 40-minute drive each way for me!
Had the Short Rib of beef and was so tasty. Beautiful setting and environment. Wonderful and helpful service. Will definitely be making a return to Stafford Road soon.
We enjoy the local Stafford Wine Bar. Great place to go before the movies. If you are lucky, you may get a seat by the gas fire with the comfy arm chairs. Good food, exceptional wine and great staff.
Took the family for a Saturday afternoon snack and ended up staying a couple of hours. The staff were great - sharing the music playlist with our 20 year old and gracious to our smaller kids while giving great recommendations on the food and drinks to me and my wife. I've been meaning to go here for a few years but the kids were too small and timing never seemed to work out. Now I know I've missed a great place and will be back. Plus I can fill my growler next door or pick out some great wines. With Stafford Road Wine Bar, Engine Room, Verbena all in the general vicinity one may never have to leave the Shore for great food and friendly service.
Absolutely adore this place and it's an understatement to say it's my local as it's more than that. The drink selection is always good and changing and the tapas is delicious. However the best part is the people. The staff are friendly to the point where they know your name and tastes and will always go above and beyond. But also the other patrons are also always up for a talk so you feel like you can always meet new people and get away from the clique-ness of other bars. Can't recommend this enough. Also check out the hot the Che Guevera bartender :)
Came here a few weeks ago for a couple of drinks and food. Glad to see there was a great selection of Craft Beers and the knowledgeable waiter advised a couple which I enjoyed, also a good selection of wines. We ordered four selections of Tapas and all were of excellent quality. Pity there aren't a few more bars like this on the shore.
Went to this place last Tuesday, and what a relaxing way to start the week. Great range of beers, bartender knew his stuff. Lots of passion clearly evident. The cured salmon was great as was the recommend wine. Highly recommended.
Claire, you must have gone somewhere else & not Stafford Road. I have been there with a friend & it is an amazing place with very good food & excellent wine. The people in Northcote are very lucky to have a high standard local eatery like this one.
What a wonderful place. Good job I don't live on the shore or would live there! Friendly staff, great wine list, lovely menu and perfect level of music.
Beer from the Mecca of craft brewing drew us back again. Attentive service, wine knowledge and selection plus delicious side plates at modest prices. Just superb again
This in my local and I visit at least once a week.
Staff are so friendly and always happy to talk to us.
Food is excellent and we are always satisfied.
Extensive wine list and lots if help if you can't decide.
This place is by far one of the best wine bars in Auckland and gives places like Didas a run for it's money.
So much effort is put into the entire experience and I will always come back here.
Highly recommended.
Great atmosphere and ambiance. Beautiful food just a little too slow between courses and water top ups. Great friendly front staff.
UPDATE Feb 2014: Just had another great Stafford Road WB experience
The is place is getting busy so you need to get there before it becomes a victim of its own success.
This is a really genuine restaurant that has a passionate focus on great fresh food that follows the seasons. They grow their own herbs and put together very interesting, delicious combinations. The Merediths heritage is evident but as I said in my original review nowhere near as fussy or expensive.
Menu is varied but not extensive ... it seems to change every few weeks ... always something on it that captures my imagination.
Everything is cooked to order and I suspect they batch orders of the same thing form various tables so the food comes out in fairly random order ... don't be surprised if, the baked on premises baked bread with their own cultured butter, arrives after you've finished the mains. Don't be surprised if the whole experience takes 45 mins to hour ... all is forgiven when you taste the divine flavours .... and the service is knowledgeable, genuine and enthusiastic too. Great wine list allows the hours to slip by effortlessly.
Highlight of the last visit was the Flat Iron Steak ... a cut I'd not heard of before. Served with parmesan, brassicas, seaweed and quail egg. Delicious beyond belief ... sadly they forgot the quail egg that was meant to accompany it ... but as I've said before this is the sort of place you need to be in the mood to forgive because they are doing their best and the best can be extraordinarily good!
If you are in a tearing hurry, feeling impatient/tense, or want gargantuan portions - then go somewhere else. If you are in the mindset to chill, sit bank, drink some great wine and sample a great range of interesting plates in a casual, genuine atmosphere then I can't imagine anywhere better. We (2 of us) had three shared plates and then shared a solo plate and desert (there are no firm rules) and had 5 glasses of wine and the bill was around $100 ... and we left feeling in a great mood, which makes it awesome value in my book!
BTW ... I'd avoid the boneless chicken wings unless you have a penchant for chicken skin ... they seem a menu favourite but didn't do anything for me - too greasy and ummm ... losts of skin.
ORIGINAL REVIEW Oct 2013: This is the first time I've ever been bothered to write a review but this place is so good I just felt I had to spread the news.
Went with friends pre cinema, a a week or so ago and had light snacks which were delicious and a few wines. Came back last night and had a more serious explore of the menu. Got to say some of the nicest most interesting food I've had for a long time. I believe the chef is ex Merediths and that shows. Interesting, complex creations (but not as fussy as Merediths) and served on wooden boards in casual tapa style. The food comes out as it's cooked and you just keep ordering until you are full :)
It was all good but the highlights were the venison and the Jerusalem artichoke ice cream ... and the ham hock baby toasted sandwiches.
Wine list is interesting too .. the cheaper wines are very drinkable and great value ... then there is more interesting more expensive options .. not just the usual suspects.
I'd give the service 10/10. Attentive, friendly, enthusiastic and knowledgeable but not all over you like a rash. Just right for me.
Surroundings are casual, friendly, homely with a nice buzz.
... and I spent the whole evening there and no one spilt anything on me :)
I'll be back!
Fantastic little place, Sat outside with a great bottle of bollinger and a great platter! Food was fresh and a great match for the bolli. Had a nice Cuban to follow...AND They have a Humidor with a great selection of Good cigars....Can't go past the Partagas series d no. 4 ! Thanks again and we will be back...Ciao Godfather.
Love this place, its my local and I find any reason I can to go there......
Small enough to be cosy, not loud or pretentious, yet cool and sophisticated to be chic.
Great food, excellent wines, they stock all my Waiheke favourites, and if you like what you're drinking you can purchase from their wine store.
I have to mention the staff too, always amazing....and if you need another reason to go the barman who is nearly always on looks like Andrew Garfield straight out of The Amazing Spiderman 2.
We called in after work on Friday evening.
The table service was welcomed and the atmosphere welcoming. We had the Tempura Tuna Loin and the Lamb and Feta meatballs. The tuna was outstanding and a generous portion to share.
We look forward to going back again soon.
Ive been here a handful of times and its not bad.
Cosy environment - Great wine list and I love been able to go to the wine store attached and grab a bottle take home after Ive had something at the wine bar I particularly liked.
Probably closer to a 3.5/5 then a 4 .
We attended their Escarpment winemakers degustation and the food was fantastic. During the event we also got the hear from the chef about his passion for food.
With a couple of the dishes they did not play safe with the wine matching and pulled it off. On the night, the John Dory was the standout. I am sure the Tapas menu would be of the same high standard.
Great place for a Sunday School if you are not looking forward to Monday.

A large group descended on Stafford Wine Bar on a sunny Saturday afternoon. We sat outside and took up a group of tables pushed together. We ordered an assortment of nibbles for the table, drinks – including many jugs of sangria. The sangria was a touch too sweet but easy to order for a group so we kept them flowing. The staff were friendly and helpful but the service was very casual and didn't reflect the sophisticated menu.
We tried 6 kinds of the shared plates including bread and fries. The fries were as excellent as the cultured butter was controversial. The boneless chicken wings, beef crackle, black garlic and sour cream was easily the most delicious plate and we ordered several of these to share. I could have eaten 3 of these before feeling full, though at $13 each it would be expensive for a dinner of deep fried chicken.
As the sun set, we helped ourselves to their blankets. A comfort for lovely autumn evenings. Stafford Wine Bar boasts interesting, creative, elegant food that is great for sharing with a few drinks. A good place to have drinks before moving on to dinner somewhere nearby.
A great place to relax and share a wine or two with a loved ones or a group of friends
I ordered a Gin Lychee Martini, it was delicious but I think I got a watermelon one. No matter, it was nice regardless.
Was here on the Bridgeway Cinema package deal that comes with the Asiette and a couple of glasses of house wine and it was all rather good. I say that because so often package deals aren't usually good value in my experience but this was great 😊
Great wine selection, delicious and beautifully presented small bites. A lovely setting to chill and enjoy good company.
Our local favorite - always fantastic and friendly service, all drinks and food are delicious. Shoutout to Connor especially! ❤️
What an awesome place!
Unique and stylish, indoor and outdoor seating, great decor and fantastic music and some BB King!
Excellent service, fast and efficient and very knowledgeable.
Thank you!
Excellent neighbourhood wine bar, it gets afternoon sun in the outdoor tables on the Queen Street side, but equally it's cosy and warm by the fire when the weather is bad. Fantastic staff who know their regulars.
Cosy, warm and friendly. The interior is tastefully decorated and it feels homely. Great wine selection. Small but delicious menu of food, (try the Arroncini balls)
Reasonable priced set in a good location.
A cool wine bar, would of liked some more wine that you can’t buy from a supermarket on the menu. I don’t wanna buy a glass of Dashwood sav i know sells for $9.99 a bottle at countdown. Good times tho! Nice staff and a decent food menu
Great variety of wines, prices were great. Interesting afternoon with friends, and great out door area to sit in the sun. Great atmosphere and wine list.
Great atmosphere, food, wine, and service. Thanks for a great night.
Great place to pop into either on the way home from work or a place to meet friends. Wine list superb and the food is great.
A neighbourhood wine bar that is absolutely perfect! Oozing charm and atmosphere it is cosy and inviting with a gorgeous fire for those cooler months. With a comprehensive drinks menu of carefully selected wine, beer and an impressive line up of gin along with everything else, there is definitely something for everyone (and non-alcoholic options too). The service is always exceptional and the staff are not only super friendly but very knowledgeable with their wines too if you need a recommendation. It's always a pleasure.

Nice looking bar, great location, friendly staff, good selection of wine and beer. The food menu is tapas style and I've never tried a dish I didn't like. Thoroughly recommended!
