This restaurant is one of the better yum cha places around Auckland in terms of price and selection. This is our normal go to for yum cha at work. We usually book if we have a large table but other times we just show up and hope for the best. They are usually quite busy.
They also seem to have a few car parks in the carpark nearby on Khyber pass. I personally haven't used it so unsure of the process.
Like other restaurants, they also have a la carte for dinner but you can also order these items for lunch. The food is generally quite tasty.
The dim sum here was quite nice. It didn’t blow me away or anything but it certainly was tasty. To me, the cheung fun was the best dish out of the dishes we ordered.
The yumcha here has improved significantly.
Prawns are delicious and crunchy throughout. They also have crayfish in the weekend for cheap as prices. Forgot to take more photos.

This place is amazingly awesome with friendly price. The shrimp dumplings are large with rich ingredients. The price overall is reasonable and lower than other yum cha places. The only drawback is the environment- we had to pretty much sit in the aisle.
One of my favourite Chinese restaurants in Auckland. The salt and pepper tofu is my favourite! Everything is flavoursome and the yum Cha is also great!
Amazing Yum Cha experience with my friends! Food was amazing, I was so full afterwards! The price is very good and would highly recommend to dine with friends!
Authentic dim sum with best value. Costumer service is a bit weird. Perhaps the managers are too busy to be kind. They always look strict and angry. Cart staff are all very nice and friendly. Must call in booking a seat in advance or you'll need to rush in eating your dim sum.

Always super busy, make sure you make a booking especially for yum char/dim sum. A bit hard to find parking around the area. Price typical of usual eatery, $5-10 for a dish of dim sum. 8 of us spent about $25pp and we were full. Make sure you ask to order some of your favorites as what comes out the kitchen could be gone really fast to other take served first as they are really popular. They make good siumai, dumplings, har gao, taro puff, naps, lots of pastries as well.
Best Yumchar place near city. Their BBQ pork pastries were the best in AKL. Love their dough sticks wrapped with rice rolls, the peanut butter and oyster sauce with sesames, which was just heaven! Service sometimes was rude tho but at least the food here was super delicious.
Very good place to hold a celebration with people. We ordered the largest lobster price $600+ was very very yummy. A good Chinese restaurant with parking easily. Highly recommended.
Update, we had been craving yum cha during lock down and had to come here. Very happy with the service with social distancing in place, all orders are given to a dedicated server who will serve you all the dim sum. The dim sum portions are large and dumplings are packed full of prawns. This is the place to go for delicious yum cha. We spent about $75 for about 8 yum cha dishes between the 3 of us. Overall, my dim sum cravings have been satisfied.
One of our favorite yum cha places in Auckland but it is always busy to be sure to book especially in the weekends around lunch. Good selection of food which is fresh dim sum.
Had yum cha here for Mother’s Day a very busy day to come here always book if you want to come here. The food is alright for yum cha food but some of the tripe was chewy the rest of the food was great tho
Food is damn great y’all 👍🏼🤤
Our weekend family dinners are held here kinda frequently, and this place is consistently up to a good high standard. We rarely ever have anything to complain about (regarding the food that is 👀). As for the lunchtime yum-cha, it is also really good as well 💛
Book in the weekend- but you will still be waiting. The Yum Cha has a wide selection, well priced and delicious. You can also order from the menu. My fav is the sticky rice, all of the dumplings, egg tarts and bbq pork.
Local Cantonese restaurant. Have yum cha every morning. Environment was great, lof of space to seat, food have lots of choices.Service is average.
The dim sum here is among the best in Auckland!! The Hargow is packed to the brim and the wrapping is so thin that you’re able to see all the ingredients inside. Service is top notch!
We've been to there a couple of times. Yum Cha was fantastic. Lots of varieties and most of them are quite flavorsome. However we went to there for dinner once and found it was extremely expensive. Good place for Yum Cha though.
Best yum cha in town.
Nice price, variety of choices.
Love chives prawn dumpling, chicken feet is so funny dishes, if cut the nails would be better....
Came here for yum cha. We were seated and served immediately, food was also good.
The trolleys unfortunately didnt come around as often as we liked, options were quite limited too, but its understandable as the place was pretty busy. All the staff were friendly and polite, one of the ladies had the sweetest smile everytime she came to our table. Near the end of their yumcha session the staff came around and took any specific orders of what anyone wanted to have brought to their table.
Its a very good spot for yumcha, but i do prefer Imperial Palace in Mt Wellington more due to more options available, slightly cheaper prices, and more frequent trolleys coming around. But still one of the best places to go to in Auckland.
Great place for a quick lunch in Newmarket!
My favourites are prawn dumplings, bbq pork buns and the ice cream balls.
Always leave happy after coming here :)

Lunch with the whole team mate to celebrate one of our friend maternity leave.. the food is delicious and really great.. have peking duck as starter, then have crispy prawn ball with salted egg, deep fried bean curd, chinese mushroom and bean curd, and of course we ordered fish.. craving to try their yamcha, but maybe next time..
Food was delicious and staff were nice. Some of the food was falling apart probably due to sitting around for a little bit. But everything was delicious, and would recommend giving the place a go.
We frequently eat YumCha here most weekends, if not fortnightly. Having been to others, we have decided this is the best yum cha house in Auckland, so much so we travel from West Auckland to eat.
The staff are always friendly and the food is delicious.
We get in early to avoid the rush, but on the odd occasion we get there when the crowds are there, we are more then happy with the 1 hr seating. We never book and are seated quite quickly.
Dumplings, siu Mei and the beef are our favourites, all have great flavours.
Very welcoming establishment. 10/10
The food is nice as always, and I see they have more stuffs now, and make the service much better. Highly recommend, and will always be back for yum cha. :)
Came to sunworld for yum cha. Overall the food was definitely above average. The spinach and prawn dumplings were exceptionally good, and the char sui buns were really tasty. Some dishes weren't amazing, such as the turnip cake. The restaurant is typical of Chinese restaurant and it was busy which is always a good sign. The price point was pretty good. I'd definitely come back.
While food is good, I needed a Chinese friend to translate so a better way to communicate what dumpling you are bringing around will be really useful. Thanks
Sun World has always been a family favourite for dinner and yumcha, friendly service and tasty food!
You’ll always be guaranteed generous servings and the best crayfish noodles.
Love this place, it’s right next to my brothers restaurant Burger Burger and i always go there to have brunch with him. The food is delicious and service is lovely
We went on last Sunday to have yum char. Lucky we were there just past 11am, and it started getting quite busy. We got seat straightaway and before my husband could even sit down, we got food served already! We were told have 1 hour to eat which I understand, it is very very busy during lunch time. We got a toddler with us, so we actually finished our lunch quite fast. The service was speedy and friendly, we asked things and they delivered straightaway. It is good they have enough staff to cope this chaos lunch service, thrums up! The food variety was huge, we wish we could eat more! My 3 years old didn’t eat much and my husband and I had 12 different dishes and still plenty we wanna eat, but too full. The food was very tasty too and probably the best yum char dish in Auckland! By the time we left, before 11.30am, the restaurant was packed!
Long established Chinese restaurants all have something in common. They are usually fully packed with enough Chinese for every Yum Char service. And Sun World is no exception. This place is always packed during weekends.
They offer a full menu of Yum Char fares. Decently prepared and of consistent quality for every busy service. It’s not the cheapest Yum Char place in Auckland, but the quality is up there with the more expensive places.
If you have never tried Yum Char and always wanted to see what it’s all about. Then this place is not a better place to start you culinary Yum Char journey.
Had yum cha here for lunch!
The restaurant has been around for years now, we don’t normally dine here only because it’s too far from home but we were in the area and needed lunch.
Nostalgic feels eating here! Food quality is good, we ordered the usual yum cha dishes and it was delicious 😋 definitely hasn’t lost its charm after so long, very busy place but we were seated straight away and food did take a while to be carted around but it all the tables were taken so busy lunch period.
Happily fed and satisfied! ☺️ highly recommend and will be back for more
Definitely one of the better Chinese restaurants in Auckland. We came for dinner as a group of 4 and ordered the diced beef with macadamia, lamb sizzling plate, stir fry gailan and prawn balls. Everything was cooked well and the flavours were decent. The lamb was a bit on the sweeter side and everything was pretty oily. All in all it’s nothing super healthy but tastes great. Serving sizes are huge and we all left feeling full with 2 boxes of leftovers remaining. The complimentary starter soup and dessert is also nice.

Food:
One of our favourite yum cha restaurants for the price in Auckland. Their custard buns and egg tarts are amazing, with gorgeous yellow custard and perfectly crunchy, flaky pastry. Their Har Gow (prawn dumplings) popped in the mouth - just the way we like them. Yummy Char Siu Bao (BBQ pork buns), and their BBQ pork was decent. Other dishes we had varied from average to quite good. It’s hard to remember everything that we consumed with the fast pace and constant munching, hence the lack of photos.
Ambience:
Typical Chinese restaurant; loud, constant chatter, busy. Nicely set tables with lazy-susans. At the front of the restaurant is a live crayfish tank, so you can choose your own seafood at your leisure.
Service:
As with any authentic Chinese restaurant service is fast, to the point, and doesn’t come with any embellishments from staff. If you’re not used to it, it may come off as rude. Overall okay.
Recommendation:
Definitely try this place if you don’t want to splurge on yum cha at Grand Harbour on the Viaduct. We’ve been here quite a few times, and each time have left full and satisfied.

Sun world is your friendly neighbourhood Chinese restaurant. It’s not scary, it’s not daunting. Just your good old canton seafood cuisine feasting place.
Come for one of the best yumcha in Auckland, or dinner mains. Either way, it’s all good.
Been to the restaurant for the first time. I was pleased the serving staff were friendly, sort of, and the food was delicious. Went with my wife and ordered whatever that looked yummy, and ended up with 90$ bill. It’d have helped if there was a way to tell which dish costs how much. But all in all, we were happy with the food and service.
I love coming here for their dimsum. Service can be a bit slow, especially when busy, and they don't take bookings during lunch. But the food is great and the price reasonable, so I'll be a regular for sure.
If you like the live seafood I would recommend this place for you. They have a lot of fresh seafood here. I been there for dinner last night normally I only came this place for yumcha at lunch time. They made good food here fresh fast and yummy.
My favorite Guangdong restaurant. Not just because their insistent delicious flavor, but also for their various type of food and reasonable price. Sticky rice in lotus leaf is one of my must-have dish every time. Baked barbecued pork puff is another one,but it was served yesterday when we were there so we ordered steamed one instead which turned also pretty good as the baked one. You will never be disappointed by any of their dishes.
Came here around 11:30am for lunch with no booking. Luckily we came early because the place filled up fast. Service is the same as all other places. Fast and straight to the point.
Trolleys were pushed out consistently and we got all the dishes we wanted quite fast.
We got pork buns, pork pastries, 凤爪, pork ribs, beef ribs, prawn dumplings and siu mai. Not my favourite yum cha but a good contender for the Newmarket area.
Food is good however they really need to take care of service during busy times. Operating at massive scale with long waiting time for customers proves something. We waited 25 minutes at table for food to be served which was diappointing(assuming its 2 plates of dimsum only).
Came here on a busy Sunday for yumcha. We waited for around 30 minutes to get a table - it could be longer as we were lucky a group of 5 left early.
Between 5 people, we had nearly every main dish that the waitresses offered. Amongst them all, the favorite of the day was properly the steamed prawn dumplings and the egg tarts. The dumplings were piping hot as it came out and the prawns were soft and a little creamy inside as well. The egg tarts were also piping hot and it melts in your mouth on the first bite.
The service level was actually decent for a yumcha lunch service as they were very polite and kept asking if our orders had arrived yet. Between 5 people, the bill came to around $124 which was reasonable considering most of our orders were in the special category.

3 Adults ate here shared meals for Dinner. We ate 3 entrees and 3 mains. With 🍷 and 4x bottles of 💧 the cost was $168. This restaurant is very good value and reasonably priced. Service was pretty good, and the food was very fresh. This is the second time we’ve been here. Well definitely return. Well done Sun World 👍🏻👍🏻
It is always a good sign for a Chinese resto to have plenty of Kiwi diners. Being discerning eaters, Kiwis know good food. Each time I come here, I see heaps of them around.
Although food here is relatively more expensive than other yum chars, it is worth coming here.
Never mind the staff who always think I am Chinese so they speak to me in Mandarin. They also can be a bit abrupt, but they are always busy with a house full of hungry tummies to fill.
Will come back again and again. Will also try their dinner menu.
Yummy Chinese food in Newmarket. Love these places where you can see the ingredients, and they have live lobsters and abalones.
Didn't have any of those as they get quite price, but everything I've tried was good: the fried rice, the duck, the deep fried beef with macadamia and the lamb flanks with dried bean curd.
Service was also great, staff super friendly to everyone, although the place was super busy.
Been here a few times, not our most favourite but definitely top 3 most popular yumcha place in Auckland. Avoid queue by booking or coming before 11 on the weekend. We waited for 1 hour the first time we came here.
All the dishes are good. With hands down to their rice roll with fried dough, crunchy dough, soft skin, good combination of sauce (we tried this dish in number of yumcha place in Auckland, definitely the best).
Atmosphere can get super busy and packed. Good price considering the area. Service is quick and efficient.
Sun World is always so busy and slightly chaotic, (in a hustle & bustle way) there’s customers jostling for space, food, orders and waiters attention. It’s a little too noisy and crowded to be able to fully relax and enjoy the dishes and enjoy the company you’re with. Thus as always the waiters were attentive, efficient and friendly. I loved the crunchy fry beans. I was hanging out for the sticky chicken rice (lo mai gai) and kept looking around for it on the trolley, sadly I didn’t see any & I left with a craving for lo mai gai 😠🐔
Always busy on this corner of Newmarket and always good yum cha. Wait time was quick as we have booked. They had all the usuals but not as much variety as our usual. We would come back again. Service was fast and attentive even in a packed restaurant thanks to the waiting staff.
Tried this place for lunch today. Was expecting to wait for ages but there weren't that many customers even though it was lunchtime. Food was a bit underwhelming - there was quite a limited selection just going round in circles. Asked a lady if there was anything else and she told us there were more dishes in the weekends. Shu mai and other dumplings were smaller in size than other places I've been to, and egg tart was not as sweet. Imho three kings beats this place, hands down.
I remember coming to this restaurant almost every day when I was younger. Unfortunately, I haven't been for a long time but I did come for yum cha with a bunch of friends. Delicious food, great atmosphere and I would come back with my family next time. Definitely recommend!
Amazing cheap and delicious Dim Sums in Newmarket! This place is always packed no matter the day or time and you can see why.
Great variety and quick service! Grab what you want quick at this place as it goes fast. Have eaten here a number of times and never fails overall for food. You have to bustle a little to get what you want and we always have our favourite dishes. The Shumai is always a winner as are the many rice rolls with sweet and peanut sauce! Prawn wontons and dumplings are always a must and the egg tarts are a fab end.
We've tried a few different places offering yum cha in Auckland, and Sun World by far is the best for the quality and taste of the dimsum. Love their dumplings, fried tofu, deep fried wontons and many many more dishes. We've been coming here for the past 10 years and love it each time.
It's a very busy place and a reservation is essential over the weekend. Otherwise you can join the 10-20 people waiting in the lobby for a table after 11am.
Costs us usually around $50 for two people when we order around 6-7 dishes. Being New Market, parking is a little difficult. You can get 1hr free parking at the car park upstairs from Tofu Shop if you buy something there.
Yum cha on point. Offers all the regular yum cha options. Larger dishes also available. Always busy so sometimes there is a wait but it's worth it.
Why do they no longer take reservations and impose a very stressful limit of 60 minutes table time :(
Regardless, they have the best dim sum in Auckland, love the prawn dumpling 虾饺, sweet soya Beancurd dessert 甜豆花, barbecued pork buns 叉烧包 and egg tarts 蛋挞.
This place is always super busy even at weekday's lunch time. But service is fast and efficient and the hygiene condition is pretty good compares to other yum cha places.
They offer a variety of dim sums and small plates. All freshly made and served constantly. It is kind of fun to watch them drive the trollies full of different dishes. We end up eating too much and left with a whole satisfactory. Cost was reasonable too-- $ 90 for two.
The only downside was the stir fried clam in black bean sauce. Almost every clam contained a mini crab in it. A bit wired and discomfortable to me.
Other than this, the best yum cha in Auckland so far.
Definitely my favourite place for dimsum!! Been here many times and the food is delicious!! Love everything here. Everything is just too good. Roasted pork, siew Mai aka dumplings, durian mochi.... 😍❤️Remember to call for reservation to skip the queue!
I used to come here a lot, almost every weekend, mainly for Yum Cha... until I discovered my new favourite.
In saying that, I still go there whenever I crave for prawn dumplings, they have a great selection (chives, coriander, spinach), and I can seriously say their version of prawn dumplings are closest to what I have had in Hong Kong :)
Look forward to my next visit.
Went for yum cha at this restaurant. Food was delicious, i wouldn't say its to die for but what got me the most was the service of the staff there. I've been to many yum cha restaurants but this is the first one where the staff actually tried to explain what the food is in english without looking annoyed.
Great restaurant, would visit again.
Used to be a family favourite for takeaway when we lived in the area - their prawn balls and ribs are done very nicely. We've been for dinner a number of times and you can tell this is an old favourite of many, bookings are definitely recommended. Dishes are done well in the traditional Canton way.
The dishes are relatively cheap among Yum Cha restaurants, small dish for $4.5, mid dish for $5, big dish for $5.5, special dish for $6.5. They are really tasty, especially steamed tripe, steamed pork dim sum(siu mai), and steamed rice rolls.
We four people ordered 3 mid dishes and 6 special dished and Roast duck, which is about $21 per person. The more people, the cheaper will be.
If u guys are in love with the busy working atmosphere like HK this is the perfect place to go! Table booking before going is recommended. Love their durian mochi it was so goooood!!!!
Came here with family. The food is excellent. A bit on the pricey side but worth it, and I'm not even a big fan of Chinese food, but their fried soft shell crab is a winner. Also crispy noodles and their steamed cod. Yum! Make sure you book ahead of time.
It is the texture of their tofu puffs. It is the flavour of their Siew Mai. It is the quick service and offering of food dishes. It is the silken experience of their Tau Fu Fa.
Even with a packed house, there is a flow. The entrance may be unassuming but the kitchen chefs and crew know what they are doing. The baked pastries are elegant and have a delightful bite. The Mochi is gentle. The congee is comforting. A window side view is a bonus.
Wise to book a table, my group showed me that yum cha has been brought to greater heights here. There is no greasiness. The variety is rewarding. The braised and steamed offerings are the best in my view.
I've been here twice. Usually toward the end of a lunch service as its normal for them to be overly busy during the peak of their service. Even with 45 minutes left before the service ended we felt very rushed and staff were very rude. Food was good, comparable to most dim sum places around this part of Auckland.
Our go-to Yum Char restaurant. Always good food and fast service. The last time we were here though they were making small groups share one of the bigger tables. Warning: this place is always full so booking ahead is a must!
This place is very popular and has pretty great food.
You can also park in the paid parking spot and then go inside and ask for a ticket and they will give you a free pass for parking :D!
Quality! It Shouldnt Be That Hard! Love A Wonderful Mouth Full Of Wholesome FOOD!
+5
I came here quiet late at night, from the moment I walked in the waiter answered all my questions about the live seafood. He took me to the chair got me water was very lovely, made sure I was all good, I was alone ,and have been craving Chinese fresh seafood!!!I have been looking for fresh barramundi but the closest thing I came to was a fresh New Zealand fish. It was nice but I prefer barramundi. It was cooked nicely it was soft and u could tell it was the live fish from the tank, it was about 700grams I also had the veggies no rice . It was good
A very noisy restaurant but tastes good. A little expensive than the other similar restaurants. Maybe coz it's close to AKL CBD area, no parking place.
Very popular yum cha place in Newmarket. Sometimes I like it there, sometimes I don't- maybe it depends on where you sit, coz some tables at the back just get offered the leftovers and not much variety left. Don't expect good service as it's crazy busy and they want you out asap. The food is generally good though.
Had great dinner.
Todd and myself we go all the time .
We love it . Friendly staff it is nice to be call by first name.
Great all round. 😆
Most consistent Yum Cha place in Auckland. Plenty to choose from. Although staff are loud, which is what should be expected from a Yum Cha experience, they seem to be quite cheerful. Food is always of a decent standard, and they nail the basics (prawn dumplings, pork buns etc.) very well. Well priced too. More interesting decor would liven the place up.
Best YUM CHA so far !
Nice and clean restaurant, food is good, price suits quality of food definitely the IT place to go for yum Cha, dough the trolley ladies didn't speak much English some were rude didn't want to explain what food was what. Overall it's a nice yum Cha to go to
Many aspects of Yum Cha dining may not sound very exciting if you've not yet been. Sun World is always packed, it's common that you must wait for a seat and when you do get one there's a time limit due to high demand. The interiors are dated and you're surrounded by fish tanks filled with your future dinner.
Somehow, these things only made my dining experience more enjoyable. There was an air of excitement to the place that made it feel like an event rather than run of the mill eating out. Due to the time limit I felt an unfamiliar need to soak up every second of the meal.
Each dish was very flavourful, far more so than similar items I've tried at other Yum Cha. The Black Sesame buns are a gorgeous mix of crunchy and soft, the shrimp dumplings generously packed with fresh tasty fillings. Staff were lively and quick, always ready with a fresh pot of tea or the dish you'd been hoping to see roll out of the kitchen. They can be a little pushy sometimes, hawking their wares, so don't be afraid to decline what's on offer. Yum Cha is like culinary gambling - you have to decide in the moment whether you're going to pounce on what is available or wait for the next trolley to come round m, hoping it'll be something even better.
While lacking interior design flair, Sun World has undeniable charm and substance, which is why it's always busy and why I'd recommend bringing a few hungry friends along to give it a go.
A classic Chinese seafood restaurant. Always very busy- lunch and dinner. For dinner, they are well-known for their super fresh seafood so make sure to try a steam a whole fish with ginger and spring onions. The service is very efficient but also friendly enough to enjoy a great night.
Best yumcha in AKL
Not only the yummy food but also service
Usually at yumcha places, I've only experienced unfriendly non-english speaking ladies walking around with trollies
But here, although their English was not so great they put on a big smile and made me feel very welcome
I'll definitely come back!
P.s their shumei is amazing
A group of 4 of us went here for yum char lunch and it was pretty good, see photos. Good selection like usual and well priced (under $20 each) only thing they don't split the bill so take cash. Service was friendly too, didn't feel rushed like some other yum char places!
Sun World is a very good place for Yum Cha lunch in Newmarket. Fresh materials, tasty food with fair price. Even dinner menu is served with acceptable price level. Service is always nice. Their sliced Pe-king roasted duck was very recommendable and high price effective.
Arguably one of the best yum cha places in Auckland. Loved every single food they offered. Great location, very central in New Market. However, the dinner dishes are quite pricey due to where its situated. Sun world and The Grand Park is the preferred Yum cha place to go in Auckland.
This place makes good Yum Char for a decent and reasonable price. The food is authentically Chinese.
However, since this is a popular place the wait times are very long. You do need to book for a table.
Another issue is the cramped space and the noise which makes it difficult to speak without yelling to be heard. Since everyone around you is virtually yelling.
Had cravings for yum char and came here with my parents. Their dumplings are the best! Dumpling Skin is thin with a generous amount of filling, especially the prawn dumplings is loaded with juicy prawns unlike the ones I've tried in the past where it's just thick dumpling skin and hardly any filling. Furthermore, I like how they use lean meat. I can tell as don't feel heavy or bloated afterwards. All their dumplings satisfy your taste buds. Kind of get carried away with it as it all tastes so good 😀
All dishes for lunch are served in a trolley so makes it easy to select what you want. Hence, that's why you can get carried away with eating too much too lol they also serve complimentary Chinese tea which kind of helps digests the food.
The only downside is the place gets overly crowded during peak time, it's adviced to book in advance and go a little earlier like at 11 am. Interior is nothing fancy
Ambience can get noisy during peak times. Staff are efficient. Most can't speak English so just have to point what you want from the trolley. Prices are decent.. well for three people it cost us $75 and we ate alot! Definitely recommended if you are craving dumplings 😊
Visit this place often because of their service which arent aggogant like some other yum char in the city. Also, this is what authentic yum char should be instead of some fushion ones. Highly recommend!
Love coming here on weekends for yum cha service (10.30am-2.30pm). Of all the yum cha restaurants I've tried in Auckland city, Sun World is still the best 😊 It is always super crowded, so it's best to come early to get a number in line or make a reservation, especially if your party has more than 3 people. The place can be quite noisy, but what do you expect from a Chinese restaurant? Good thing is their staff still can understand and speak English better than other yum cha places.
They serve all the typical yum cha dishes, although they don't have the egg york custard bun. Among the yum cha dishes at Sun World, my must-haves are the prawn dumplings (3 types: plain, with spinach, with chives), xiu mai, chicken feet, chicken sticky rice, BBQ pork bun and egg tarts. All dishes are hot, delicious and fulfilling. The food trolleys go around pretty fast, so don't worry about missing out on what you want, unless you arrive at the place really late. Price is fairly reasonable, usually $$20ish per person. Highly recommend Sun World ❤️
If you want to dine at the best yum char place, go to the loudest one (Cantonese is the worlds loudest language)
It is one of the most popular yum char restaurant of them all and the most noisy, so popular diners crowd the entrance-way waiting for a table, dishes is very original and filling, i wont go into the pros/cons of every dish as lots, now can say it's our regular, if so you may see someone you know there (or not wanna know), they don't mind if you refill yer tea pot yerself or help yerself to sauces if they are super busy.
Yous must try the seafood dish by fishing a lobster from the tank by the entrance and they will cook this for you,
I even heard a car fell out of the nearby 4th floor car parking building and landed outside Sun World, must a Sun World diner rushing there for a feed maybe, See link below for story..
Very nice yamcha at Sun World. Often when you go to Yamcha right when a place opens you are waiting quite a while until the carts are loaded etc... not here! Straight into it.
Very fresh with great flavors. Personally think it is the best New Market has to offer.
If you want to avoid the busy crowd come around 10.30! This place gets insanely busy. Food is great, good variety and reasonably priced. Will def come back again!
The dim sum here is delicious. I especially recommend the chicken feet (my favourite) and the egg tarts. They offer a wide range of both savoury and sweet dim sum for yum cha. There are also lots of options for dinner but some are only available for pre-orders. It's usually better to reserve a place if you plan on bringing a big group.
I’ve only ever come to sun world for yumcha so this review is based purely on lunch! We’ve come here a few times last year but revisited last week. We arrived on a friday afternoon with no booking and were seated immediately.
The service was good - I think they speak a little more english in comparison to the waitstaff at competitors. A good stream of trolleys which is exactly what you want to see! Its sad to sit around waiting for more food to come pass.
Food quality was good too and pricing is what you would expect from the new market area. My favourites include the siu mai, prawn ha gao, egg tarts and the bbq pork cheong fun!
If you have no idea what you’re reading - just walk in, drink some tea and try a couple of dishes. Its definitely a must try experience. :-)
Had new years eve dinner here. They only have limited dish option due to busy booking. Except the banquet menu, the selected menu doesn't have english translation on it took me a bit of time to explain to my partner. Wait time is shorter than we expected, service is average but reasonable. Food is yummy! We especially loved the steamed whole blue cod, and also the Tsingtao beer!
This place is probably one of only Chinese restaurants who's cooking is closest to my dads cooking (who's a Chinese chef himself).
The taste of their dishes are so similar to what I normally am use to. One 'downfall' was their soup (condiment) is full of flavour but you can tell there is helluva MSG in there 👎🏼
Otherwise their dishes aren't bad. The service is a lot better than the other Chinese restaurants that I've been to. It's always packed in here as well whether it may be for yumcha or dinner.
Sun World is alway very busy because their food is amazing. They have big variety of selection for yum cha and very fresh seafood for dinner.
Consistently yummy Chinese food and friendly service. One of the owners recommended us a few dishes which all came out wonderfully: salt & pepper scampi, tofu with bok choy and Chinese mushrooms, braised deep fried fish with broccoli, Peking duck...these are only some of their amazing dishes. I would recommend you to ask the owners if you're not sure what to order. Their yum cha during lunchtime is really good too although when they get real busy their service tends to slip a little bit (hence not perfect score), but this is understandable. Booking is essential. Must try if you're in Newmarket. One of the best Chinese restaurants I've been to in New Zealand.
Probably one of the better Chinese restaurants around. Highly recommend the stir fried beans with pork mince! So crunchy and perfectly seasoned with that salty pork mince! 9/10
Fried bean curd? 8/10
Can't remember what it was called but that was good too!
Deep fried ried soft shell crab- 7/10
was pretty tasty but not worth the price for $42.
Sizzling steak fillet with ginger and spring onion sauce- 6/10
A bit too chunky and soft for my liking. A good size portion though
Sweet and sour fish fillet- 8/10
Good sauce with crunchy fish fillets. Yum
They also give you complimentary dessert at the end of your meal. We got the red bean soup last night. Not my favourite though. Overall, a tasty restaurant and good service. Would definitely return in the future :)
I have been here many times for Yum Cha and would say that this is one of the best places to go foe Yum Cha! I love going there as there is always so many people and adds to the great atmosphere of the place! Their food is always very good and service is always available! Would recommend this place if you have a large group of people rather than just a couple or few people :)
A bit expensive but it's worth it because everyone knows that this is the best yum char place in Auckland. Perfect for special celebratory occasions but be sure to book because it gets packed during the busy hour
Good yum Cha. Tried and tested. Always busy. Lots of varieties, efficient service and middle of the road pricing. Can be problematic finding a car park otherwise all good.
Every time I'm at Sun World I feel at home, likely because I use to work here. As a diner it is great food, you pay for what you get and the plates are always cleared because it is that delicious and authentic! Nothing but the best ingredients used, the boss is always keen for a laugh and overall everything and everyone is just wonderful.
Best yum cha in CBD area, in my opinion. Good authentic choices and good value.
It gets quite busy so get there early or be prepared to wait. They take bookings so maybe do that. The boss is quite attentive so if you require anything, just put it an order and they usually won't forget.
Foodwise, they make good dumplings, best deep fried squid!!! No idea how they make it so crispy and not chewy at all.
Ambience, a typical Chinese restaurant. Busy but enough food circling around.
Also, they do a good lobster noodle if you are willing to splurge.
Super busy over the weekends from 12 onwards so pays to book or get in earlier. Sunworld serve up your general staple of yum char dishes; chicken feet, pork buns, egg tarts, shumai etc. While not outstanding in flavour, the dishes arrive relatively fast and extensive array of choices means there is always something for everyone.
This place was soooo busy. Even though they were busy, the food that we ordered came super fast! We were served with soup first, then came our food. We had scallops, prawn and beef. They're delicious. Finger lickin' good :) will probably be back. Thanks
This is my hands down favorite yum cha restaurant. Don't go in expecting a nice quiet lunch, it is always FULL and ROWDY! The food is amazing, true Chinese food, as evidenced by the amount of Chinese who cram into the place every day! very authentic and FLAVORFUL! Make sure you book ahead and go with a decent size group so you can try HEAPS, like the pork belly, duck and baby octopus. The custard tarts are to DIE for! Do not expect dining advice from the wait staff.
This place gets pretty busy during lunch time on the weekends so you should expect to be put on the waiting list unless you go early around 11am. Once seated food comes regularly and all dishes are decent price and are Great.
Always busy and there's a reason for that. This is a very popular establishment that leans towards the more pricier side but the food is good.
It can get a bit crazy during peak times, but that's half the fun and experience of a Chinese restaurant.
Food: 8/10
Service: 3.5/5
Ambience: 4/5
Value: 3.5/5
Overall: 19/25
Came here in the weekend for a family gathering. Sun World Yum Cha is by far ny favourite yum cha restaurant in Auckland! It's always busy so it's best to make a booking! The dishes that I always look forward to are the pineapple buns, siu mai and chicken feet. There were also black sesame mochi which I tried and wow it was so warm and sweet, my fave! We basically had mostly all the dim sum there was! There was pork and chives bun which was really good too, fresh from the kitchen! Hmmm....oh yes, the red bean paste in a crispy oval shape thingy is something I always look forward to evevry time I go to yum cha! Overall, I was very satisfied with the food. I'm going to come here every time I feel like chinese food.
This was always the yumcha place that I would always go to as a kid whenever we visited Auckland, so if it’s good enough for my parents, it must be legit! I’ve been here a few times since and it is still my favourite yumcha place in the city. I always book as it is usually crazy busy, especially on a weekend. The place can get quite noisy, and the staff aren’t exactly very gracious, but that’s just the kind of place it is and the food definitely makes up for that.
You can get all the traditional yumcha dishes here, and the carts have a great range to pick from. I recommend arriving early to ensure you don’t miss out on what you want, but you can also place orders to have things made special. The prices are good and it ends up being a very affordable meal when you go with lots of people.
I usually come here for lunch during the week and it's surprisingly good Yum-Cha for what you pay for. The only problem is that it can be a bit hectic when it comes to busy hours/days and that's when the Customer Service fails as it seems quite understaffed - but the silver lining in that situation is that you can trust that the food is good, as when the restaurant is not busy, they tend to bring out room-temp Yum-Cha from what I noticed.
The only mishap I've experienced with this place is when me and my partner came for their Yum-Cha session on a weekend, and ended up having a muck of sauce splashed all over his shirt as a waiter was chucking in plates into a waste/dishes bin that goes out onto the floor when clearing tables. It was disgusting and we received no apology or sympathy whatsoever which was frustrating.
In short, the Yum-Cha is really good here but don't expect superb customer service. They also do Take-Away Yum-Cha which is really awesome for something you want on-the-go as well!
:)
Have only been here for lunch where it is a buzzing and busy place for yum char. They have a decent selection of food that is reasonably priced. Would recommend trying the "yao zha guai (a fried pastry) wrapped in rice rolls served with peanut sauce". The usual dishes like "siu mai" and egg tarts are generally pretty good.
Yum Cha here on a Sunday is CRAZY busy - in a really fast paced no nonsense kind of a way. There is usually a queue, but it is worth it.
Green Tea on arrival and replenished throughout - and then a raft of people whizzing by with completely laden trolleys of delights!! English is not the main form of communication here - but they are incredibly happy to lift the lids on the little bamboo baskets for you to take a peek and they name a few ingredients - and well you really can't go that far wrong!!
Think - Fried black bean clams, Chicken feet, Dumplings, Whole fried fish, Glutinous rice, Pig knuckles - honestly you really can't keep up with them! The focus is purely the food (full stop!).
THE chinese yum cha to go to in Auckland.
Mum doesnt complain about this one, and if mum has nothing bad to say about it, then its really good.
I bring my friends..and family. Best go early to get a table, or book, esp on busy weekends.
Recommended offerings..siu mai, har gow, those prawn rice rolls, ice cream balls..and every so often they mix it up so its not the usual yum cha fare.
The best place to get authentic dim sum!!! Love the food there and the service there is awesome too!! Usually you'll get grumpy staff serving you at a chinese restaurant but not here! They are so helpful and patient and always smiling. I am really impressed. It gets really crowded there so make sure you make a reservation first! If not you'll have to wait pretty long to get a table.
Many of my Chinese friends have recommended this restaurant for yumcha. This year I finally have the chance to try it out myself with my boyfriend and it has become our favourite place for yumcha. We have visited this place 3 times in the past 6 months which explains how good it is.
Our favourite dishes are the pork dumplings, prawn dumplings and baby octopus. The service is sufficiently fast and offers a wide range of options serve. I love this place because of the quality of food. It totally worth the price( I think they are slightly pricey than other places) and also the food is always served warm.
However I must warn you guys that they are always packed so you might be expected to share tables with others or wait 10-20mins for a day. So I would suggest you all to make a reservation.
Please reserve a table and get there on time. Yes on time and never be too early! They do not entertain earlier arrival guests.
The restaurant is medium size but always full. Hence reserve a table is a good idea. Otherwise go on weekday or weekend before 11:30am or after 1:30pm. If you don't mind late lunch, 2:30pm we still saw guests walking in and still welcome to be seated and had their lunch.
The staff is very effectiveness in handling the dim sum to your table by pushing their carts around telling what they have and what you want.
The food was fantastic good! My favourite is the "kuai fa ko" (a kind of Chinese ancient kingdom time jelly), "Tao foo fa" (soya bean dessert), fried black bean clam and ice cream (cover with a thin layer of glutinous rice with some flour, served in 3 pieces per plate).
For family of four, the bill will be around NZD80 to NZD120.
Been here for yum cha and for a meal in the evening. Yum cha was good with plenty to choose from and it all came quite quickly. You need to book for yum cha.
Dinner was good chinese food. Language is a problem as it felt like many of the staff had little English
Our favourite restaurant, when ever we have overseas visitors, or want to take our friends for a great meal we come here.Highly recommend Salmon done two ways, Sashimi and steamed with Black bean sauce. The staff are great and food is always fresh and beautifully cooked.
Food was pretty decent, chose a lobster from the tank and cooked it with noodle base. The meat was nice and tender.
However, I was a bit disappointed with the fish though... besides that everything else was great. Good service despite being so busy. Friendly staff as well. Not a fancy Chinese restaurant but it's the food that matters.
As best as it can get for asian food and a very busy place. Food was constant as a yum cha should be and tasty too. $50 for 2 fulled up people. Very happy with this restrnt.
After a heavy dinner of game food on the previous Saturday, I took my visitors to enjoy a lighter lunch of yum-cha. There are only 2 places for consistent Chinese food in Auckland I would recommend - Sun World in New Market and Joyful in Epsom. (For other places, either the food quality is not consistent or the service is unacceptable.)
Chinese restaurants are all rather noisy -That's the Hong Kong (Chinese) style. Dim Sums (small dishes) were brought before your table for picking. Most of them were authentic, or at least 85% authentic. Sun World is a Chinese restaurant I won't feel embarrassed when inviting my friends to for lunch or dinner.
(Food - 4.5/5; Service - 3/5; Ambience - 3/5)
My review and rating is for dinner given a good yum cha doesn't necessarily translate into a good dinner experience. Maybe zomato should give option ratings for lunch and dinners. While yum cha is distinctly different some other establishments also vary depending on lunch or dinner. Eg Japanese bento dinner box.
While the decor is feeling a little tired the layout is atypical of a functional chinese resturant. They have a reasonably large floor space area and demand requires many 8-10 persons tables.
I found the food here at a good standard but not refined. The beef with macadamia dish 3/5 is a similar dish to Jade Dragon while the macadamia nuts were not crushed the meat was not as tender and the taste a little sugary. A problem with cantonese cooking is the over-reliance on sugar to sweeten dishes or MSG to enhance tastes.
Second dish was fish with veges. (Off the menu) good crunchy veges cooked well. Fish was tasteless though and lacked substance when you bite into it. A bit like hoki. Still prepared to the usual standard but nothing extra to stand out. 3/5
Waited an age for the third and final dish. This can be annoying has you can tuck into the earlier dishes and be full before the last dish arrives. Still the steamed pork belly with taro was worth the wait. Tender and flavoursome. 5/5 wait is unavoidable but be conscious if you are on a timeline.
Sun world like many cantonese restuarants still provide a soup to start and a hot dessert to finish that are free of charge. I usually pig out in the soup cos im hungry but flag the sweetened dessert.
Pricing is mid to high range at 32-34 per dish. Fish say could be $24-$28 elsewhere.
In summary sun world delivers and doesn't try to be anything more. Table Service was good paper napkins personally I dislike at dinner.
3.5 for the food. The food served was similar to dimsum in the Philippines.
Although more delicious in the Philippines but thats probably because I'm prejudiced for it.
The staff are sullen,
Don't know english. When I asked for a baby chair, they were not too happy about it. They put me and my baby in the corner where there was barely any room for the high chair. Definitely not baby friendly.
Yum Cha is the ultimate cure for a hangover and this is probably the first time I've been to Yum Cha without one. The experience was much the same minus the headache and nausea :) We made a booking and were seated about 5 minutes after we arrived. We got a great table, the waiters with their little trolleys provided a constant stream of tasty delights. I particularly like the steamed dumplings with prawn and chives or prawns and coriander so made sure I got a good dose of these. The food here is tasty and fresh. We also got a good supply of green tea. I would definitely come back here and I can see why it's the best Yum Cha in Auckland. I think Yum Cha places have chronic bad service because the wait staff are rushed off their feet. However, the waiters here were helpful and brought us a plate of ice-cream balls upon request. ICE-CREAM BALLS OMG!!!
Had dinner here. Lady helped us to have seat very quick. Ordered crab and corn soup, sweet and sour pork and chicken and salty fish. Everything was very good, portion was huge! Especially sweet and sour pork was super hot(very crispy!) and felt fresh.
Three dish cost us around $55 which I felt little overpriced.
Their service is good compare to all other chinese restaurant. We will go back again.
my go to for yum cha! expect a queue - its worth the wait. expect to be rushed back put once you are done - it is that busy!! dinner menu is good too.
We spent about $115 for a meal for three. Ordered the Peking duck which was quite nice. Loved the fresh flavours.. Will definitely go back for yum char as our dinner experience was more than satisfactory.
Food reminds me of yum char in Msia. Great quality food, you can tell everyone loves it by the amount of ppl here. Too bad its too busy, may have forgotten one order but no problem otherwise :)
Most reliable and consistent Chinese restaurant. Quality food. Simply cannot go wrong with Sun World. You'd be hard pressed to find a better Chinese restaurant. Not the fanciest of places, but seriously who cares because all that matters is the food, which is great.
We were in New Market to do some shopping so thought we would start off with a bit of yum cha. Glad we did and glad we got in early. This place gets very busy so I guess if your not early you should prepare for a bit of a wait.
The food is not as flashy as somewhere like Grand Harbour but is exceptionally tasty. The service was very good.
We had our one year old son with us and it was not a problem at all, plenty of other families also there.
Great food. Always so busy and will have to book ahead. English is not the main language here so better get familiar with the menu otherwise can get confused with what's being served. They are all yummy though!
Sun world is our go to place for Chinese food. Both a yum char restaurant in the day and a very extensive menu at night it ticks all the boxes as far as what I expect for a Chinese restaurant.
Yum Char - BUSY BUSY BUSY! Make sure you make an appointment, because the lines are long and not really a nice place to wait for a seat. It is really loud which is what I would expect and I don't mind that at all, I think it adds to the experience! The food comes by quickly and while the servers don't speak much english they are mostly always polite and do try to compensate for the language barrier. If you don't know what to pick just ask to have a look and if it looks tasty give it a go!
Dinner - Food is always consistently good, however very pricey! If you splurge and get the peking duck, crayfish and have a largish group it will seriously dent the credit card! But if you are going to get seafood it's guaranteed to be fresh as they have a live tank in the front to pick from.
I love this place but wish it were a little bit cheaper, but for a treat here and there definitely worth it!
Love this place for Yum Char! Really good value and great quality food. Could do with a little more variety.
Went for yum cha with friends. The food was very nice compare to some of the places I have been. I didn't feel like drinking lots of tea after the food. Service was reasonable considering they were really busy. Better to book for yum cha at the weekends though.
Really liked the yum char here when we went 4 months ago so tried dinner there last week. Food was pretty good although we probably didn't order the best dishes.
Soft shell crab was nice although a bit pricey for what was served $42 and the dish was not very unique. We liked the prawn stuffed tofu the best. We ordered satay beef (sizzling) and an eggplant casserole which were pretty average. Bill was about $130+ for 5 of us (no drinks) which was fairly reasonable for a Chinese restaurant of that quality although not the cheapest. Service was good and the place looked tidy. All in all, was a nice evening out.
This place is not only great for yumcha but also dinners! Went with a large group last night, food was reasonably priced, delicious, service excellent and not to mention everything's very clean!
The only annoying thing is finding parking - there is a public carpark next door and you can get discounts from parking for having dined at Sun World, but that car park is the worst I have ever encountered - machines and regulations extremely un-user friendly, for a bunch of 20/30 somethings none of us have ever encountered such a poor parking system! But this is nothing to do with Sun World.
Will definitely be back.
I love this place and visit here as often as I can!! The food that is delivered is AWESOME!! They also have other food here that i've never had @ other yum cha places. The waiters are not rude, they may not speak great English but they're great! Remember you are NOT the only person they have to serve!! If you are going to this place and have never had yum cha before then take someone who knows what food is good! I recommend this place to EVERYONE and i will always return!! Tip, if you are going on a sunday then go early or be prepared to wait for half an hour, this place gets busy!! This place is so good i will travel from Manurewa to Newmarket just for the yum cha!
I had never tried Yum Char until today. (22/2/2014).
It was the most delicious meal I had the pleasure of tasting in a very long time.
There was a huge variety of very tasty food, most of which I had never tried before.
The best? Sesame paste inside a rice ball. Amazing!
I highly recommend Sun World Chinese Restaurant!
8 of us were here for yum cha lunch on Sunday and had a really good time. The place was extremely busy, so very noisy but it was what we expected of a family restaurant. The food came quickly with a really good variety on offer and the teapot was topped up regularly too. Plenty of parking close by too, I paid $4 for 2 hours in a pay and display spot. The fact that we had a Chinese speaking friend at our table may have ensured the good service we got, but I would be confident about returning without her as I am sure we would get the same level of fast and efficient service.
My family goes out for dinner very often and this is our favourite Chinese place!! Yes, we are all Chinese so we know what we're talking about. Both yum char and dinner is impeccable. There's a lot of variety in the choices and everything delivered is at a very high standard. I love yum char here but you have to wait a very long time if you haven't made a reservation because its very popular!!
Go here now!
We were in Auckland for business reasons and decided to have a yum char lunch here. We were not disappointed. After a short wait we were shown to our table. There was a reasonable selection of food on offer and the service was quick and efficient.
Sun World should also be commended on their char siu pao and pork siu mai. These were the most flavoursome versions of both dishes I have tasted to date. As we live in the Waikato, the restaurant was also happy to let us purchase dim sum to takeaway. We will definitely be back!
We dinner with friends of 15 persons on Thursday night we booking 2 tables ..the food was great and delicious...the service was very faster and friendly...only thigh very hard find the parking in new market and only in upstairs cover car parking pay and display...!
Went here for the first time today. Glad I had booked a head of time as it was pretty full even at 2pm.
Was quite surprised how good the food was. Ordered Har Gao, they were so good we ordered a second lot. They had whole prawns in them (something you do not get in most yum cha places in NZ). The Siu Mai was also good. The Chive and Prawn dumpling also was superb, again it contain whole prawns.
Egg tarts were extremely nice and light. The pastry was also puffy. The tofu jelly (tofu fa) was very smooth.
Waiting staff all spoke good English, which I was surprised about, most yum cha places I have been in NZ their English are generally pretty bad, so always tempted to order in Chinese :)
Definitely recommend this place to anyone who is looking for good yum cha place in Auckland. Will definitely return when I am in Auckland next.
A regular destination for us, the service is frantic but we don't go there for that. If you want Cantonese food cooked the way we Cantonese like it, you must eat here. I have too many favourites to mention but the steamed blue cod with ginger and spring onions, cantonese crispy roast duck, the white poached chicken and the special tofu are all very close to my heart. If you want to go all out to impress, try the crayfish sashimi, it's spectacular.
Had yum char here for lunch. It was very busy but service was still quick and efficient. A good variety of food at a steady pace. Tasted good and the price was reasonable. Will be coming back.
You might have a hard time trying to find a parking lot here. I've been here once and very impressed with the service, nothing special about the food because it seems to me yum char is all the same. But excellent service A+++
this place gets really busy during lunchtime and service can vary. The tea servers are quick to refill your pot without being asked, but it required quite a bit of work getting the attention of the food servers pushing around the food carts. Overall, food selection is satisfactory, but slightly expensive. It cost $140 for a table of 4... .which comes up to $35 per person.
After a previous poor experience 2 years ago, the last two occasions we have gone, have been much-improved. Dishes arrived quickly, and the quality and portions were nothing to complain about.
This place is always busy, so that says something good about this place.
Always had good yum cha here but be warned it's pretty popular so make sure you arrive at a good time (11:30am)be prepared to wait OR book a table so you won't be disappointed.
They have a good variety of dishes and although a bit pricier than some of the other yum cha restaurants around they are worth it. The service is great and the staff are friendly. I took my friends here and the loved it, oohed and ahed over the dim sum..one really good dish is the mango dessert. Don't forget to try the custard tart, har gow and pork buns.
Delicious place, great setting and welcoming staff. Food is delicious and arrives quickly, however does slow down during busy hours but that is understandable. Also a bit on the pricey side, but when taken account with food and service, pretty reasonable. Recommended!!
good food good service discounted parking if you don't book at lunch time you will wait up to an hour
we go once every weekend, sometimes not a large selection you need to order from the yum char menu
one of the only places that when you order from the yum char menu it arrives to you prices around the same for all the yum chars
I love your food and good Hospitality, I always offer to all my friends to come over there for yum char...cheers
this is one of the best chinese restaurant ever, yummy meals and great staff! but hard to park tho... well, still 2 thumbs up!!! keep up the good work!
Yum Char Sundays - 5 stars for outstanding food, very busy so book ahead. Look out for the massive live crayfish.
family gatherings spot! awesome food and services! x
If Newmarket is your place to shop and eat, why not check out Sun World Chinese Restaurant for their yum char? Highly recommended to all yum char lovers visiting Newmarket
Our family go-to restaurant for celebratory dinners and to showcase the best of New Zealand seafood in Chinese style cooking when family and friends visit from overseas.
Have sampled many dishes including the two course Peking duck (first course with pancakes, cucumber, spring onion and hoisin sauce and the second course san choy bau style), sashimi scampi and salt and pepper scampi, live crayfish served with yee mein, stir-fried blue cod with wood ear fungi and winter melon, stir-fried round beans with pork mince and olives (amazing!) and steamed oysters with garlic, vermicelli and chives to name a few. All their dishes are always fresh tasting and flavoursome WITHOUT the horrible MSG thirst that is the aftermath at some other Chinese restaurants. To be honest, I have never had a dish at Sun World that I have not enjoyed! Dinner starts with complementary soup and ends with complementary fruit or sweet soup for dessert.
Yum char is just as delicious with the usual range of dishes offered by the cartload. There are over 50 savoury and sweet selections on offer. The egg custard tarts are particularly good, as are the rice rolls.
This place is always packed and booking is a must for yum char in the weekends and dinners on special occasions (e.g. Mothers Day etc). While it can seem hectic, the staff (who have been there for a long time) are efficient, pleasant and able to recommend any special dishes on offer that evening. Watching the staff clear and re-set a table in less than 1 minute is a novelty in itself! There is a pay-and-display parking available in the adjoining Tournament car park building and the parking fee is partially reimbursed if you present the receipt at the time of paying.
Unfortunately, I am unable to quote the individual prices of each of the dishes, but usually a meal for four costs about $100-170 (3-4 dishes with white rice and Chinese tea, excluding alcoholic beverages). BYO is available ($7 corkage per bottle) with a selection of wine, beer and non-alcoholic drinks available as listed on their website.
Sun World definitely rates as my top Chinese restaurant in Auckland. The food is always consistent with fast service. I must mention that I do speak Cantonese and Mandarin, my Dad knows the owner/manager and also frequent this restaurant on a regular basis so this may be why I rate this place so highly!
I went to yum cha today with a group of friends, and having not been to Sun World in about 10 years I was pleasantly surprised to find that all of the dishes we tried were still absolutely delicious.
I was very glad that we had booked in advance, as there were a lot of other people there and the restaurant filled up quickly. The dishes were plentiful, and I really appreciated having a menu on the table so that we were able to keep an eye out for our favourite dishes. There were many vegetarian options, with my favourite being the steamed greens. I highly recommend the pineapple buns, which are a sweet bread bun filled with pineapple and coconut custard.
I'd recommend sitting as close to the kitchen as you are able to, in order to ensure that you can nab your favourite dishes first. Parking is easy, with a pay and display carpark being located directly above Sun World.
I admit it, I don't come here enough for yum cha, but whenever I do come here its for dinner - and dinner is amazeballs!!!
Sorry for not posting enough photos of food, its just that with family outing and teenage brothers, you better eat quick if you want food.
Parents has known the owners and staff that works here for years, but I must say, the manager that works here is amazing, so swift with his work, changing tables so fast, attentive to customers, keeping teapots full, friendly and just a charismatic smile. He's like this to everyone, from regulars to new comers. Weekend nights are fully book whenever we come here, but do call in and book in advance if you want a table.
Now to the food.
On Mother's day we came to this establishment, since it was Mother's Day, why not get Peking Duck for starters right? Peking Duck is Beijing's most famous dish, Peking Duck is traditionally served with Mandarin pancakes, and green onions for brushing on the hoisin sauce rolled up like a spring roll. Duck was cooked perfectly, was totally great, tasty and juicy, though there wasn't enough sauce, we staff came by as topped us up with more. Thing I disliked about this dish (only on this occasion) was the pancake was really powdery. With the left over duck, it was a quick fry spicy dish.
LOBSTERS!!! Amazing. They have a lobster tank at front and you can choose what lobster you want, since they charge by the weight, Mum being really typical wanted the little beauty to be cooked with noodles :) YUMMY! It was cooked perfectly for us, not too raw and not over cooked, just the right amount of flavoring which allows you to taste the lobster instead of being overpowered by the likes of things like... MSG.
Actually, we ordered a lot of food whenever we come here, pretty much everyone's favourite dish. From Peking Duck for all, Mum and her Lobster, my brother lamb chops, to another brother's dish which was deep fried tofu, another dish for my third brother was his beef and macadamia nuts (totally delicious), mine would be the simple steamed cod fish with drizzled with soya sauce topped off with spring onions, ginger and corriander. To Dad's free range chicken with dipping sauce, ughhh >.> and his fried round beans with pork mince. We didn't get oysters or steamed clams with vermicelli this time though, but its a fave with the family. But yeah, if you can't finish your food, they provide you takeaway boxes so you can take food home :)
Ugh... I feel as though I've written more than I should. Sun World is a family fave, heaps of tables for big groups, functions and wedding venue, they can also make part of the restaurant private for functions too. Great selection of dishes that are tasty and served at reasonable times and hot, staff are amazing and friendly. Parking around the area or you could use the park building which if free parking when you pay your your dinner and they refund you a certain amount - discounted for guest that dine at Sun World (I stand corrected, edited due to the fact the parking was free for us)
I recommend people to come and try the place out
A very busy and popular restaurant, recently visited for Yum Cha where service was quick and food was hot and well flavoured- you won't need much soy sauce for the dim sum here. For dinner, the duck is delicious- one of the better roast ducks in Auckland (much better than Tai Ping where I usually get roast duck for dinner every few weeks). Lobster is always a winner, it was almost on par with the one from Grand Park. As with usual Asian restaurants, you can pick your lobster from the tank and they will weigh it and then cook it for you. There's always this one man who is funny and incredibly efficient- he whizzes around the restaurant, happily obliges with taking special orders for dim sum, and sets up tables for new groups in 5 seconds flat.
Very popular yum cha venue, with queues going out the door. The trolleys roll past frequently and there is a wide selection of dishes, including all the usual favourites. Great food at good prices, if you don't mind the crowd. Even if you book in advance, be prepared to wait for your table.
Dinner at Sun World is also delicious, and much less hectic. Plenty of live seafood available, if you are after a special meal.

Their yum cha is fantastic! I personally love their deep fried tofu (you might need to order this to the staff because they don't come round often). Their dumplings are fantastic too, chives being the tastiest; very very good egg tarts and tofu jelly as desserts. Too bad most of the staff only speak a lick of english, albeit being very helpful and friendly. Booking is a must on weekend lunches... they are very, very packed! And reasonably priced too.
Have been here a number of time. Just had lunch with my family a couple of days ago. The restaurant was pleasant and sitting was comfortable. Not too crowded this day. The service was friendly and efficient. Good portion of food and taste was good. A good place for yum cha. Recommended if you are around the area and looking for a place for yum cha.
This isn’t the place you go to for ambience. It’s pretty busy at peak hours for Yum Cha and if you decide to dine, go with an appetite. Order your faves, eat, have some tea and leave. It’s not a place I’d recommend for a “nice” dinner or lunch. You go here if you want a quick bite with a friend and then go about your business. Don’t expect 5-star service either. The food is strictly what you go here for.
Cross path any times but didn't venture in. This weekend, I went twice and got a decent sample of their dishes. The service is reasonable, seems slightly bigger portion than others. Taste wise, quite flavourful and isn't salty or has much Msg. Reasonable cost and they are between 8 - 9 per dish. However, service isn't that great and constantly waiting for food. Some improvements is necessary. Do remember that likely after 1. 30pm, you need to order what you want as the cart sort of stop once they finish selling (didn't know it and no one came around to tell us). However, be warned that if you're ordering any takeaway fry noodles, ask the price as my friend was charges $33 for a Singapore fried noodles takeaway in the standard takeaway container (we think its way overcharged). Also I called to try to book a table but the lady says no point as when you arrive, if there aren't any table, you have to wait anyway. The good thing is the wait is no more than 10 mins for both days I went. Few pics attached for ref.
Great food very yummy yum char menu. Great range of specialty dishes that are sun worlds signature dishes. Great for lunch and dinners. Quick if you want to be in and out to move on. But no pressure if you want to chill and relax too. Live tank seafood if you want super fresh dishes.
Yummy yumcha! 😍 One of the only places that does house-made Tofu Flower (doufu fa). I'm not from Auckland but every time I'm up, I will venture here for their yumcha and tofu flower. Their crispy squid is also divine and probably the best I've had in NZ (take that with a grain of salt, haven't yum cha'd around NZ much)
Our regular go to spot in Auckland for quality, pumping hot, fresh dim sum. You are seated quickly even when busy and then it is just a delicious feast of Cantonese delicacies.
Tried Yum Cha all over the world and this place is right up there with the best....
Great food for good value. Also a wide array of food choices during yum cha lunch; it's unfortunate I can only eat so much! 🙂👍
Sun World Chinese has become our favorite yum char work lunch spot for its delicious offerings, prompt service and satisfaction guarantee every visit.
We’ve been dining toward the end of service so rather than waiting for carts to come around, we order up front and get everything freshly made and piping hot. I adore the coriander dumplings and pork shumai. Delicious every time!
One of the better (both in price and taste) yum cha restaurants in the area. Don't normally book unless coming with a large group. Offers the standard yum cha items like siu mai and BBQ pork buns, as well as more unique ones like stir fried clams.
They also seem to have a few car parks in the carpark nearby on Khyber pass. I personally haven't used it so unsure of the process.
Like other restaurants, they also have a la carte for dinner but you can also order these items for lunch. The food is generally quite tasty.
One of the nice yumcha places in Auckland - Best Pineapple Bun🍍in town - the top crust is perfection 👏. If you are around Newmarket, check it out!!
Came for yumcha. Huge selection, one of the best in Auckland. Reasonably priced at $5/$5.50/$6/$7 for S/M/L/Special. Tastes pretty decent, the same as every yumcha.
Notes:
- You can only make a booking if you have 3 or more people
- Self serve sauces and refill your own tea
- Very crowded, noisy, and hectic
- Watch out for the special dishes that are priced way differently; plate of spicy crab is $20! Note that although it looks like it, it's not soft-shell crab; it's deep fried small hard crabs.
- Staff will make a reasonable attempt at English, but most of the time the lids on dishes on trolleys will be closed. Good luck if you don't have a Chinese person with you!
