Grabbed a beer and a cocktail here after work before dinner. Cosy little hole in the wall venue. Cool decor and good music.
Priced for the cbd . Liked my cocktail probably pop by again.
Happy hour menu looked appealing
I ordered the miso glazed salmon bowl, which is a colourful and healthy looking dish. It was very filling. I enjoyed the salmon and edamame beans, and the ginger/onion gives the after taste a nice finish. One thing I want to point out is there was too much rice in proportion of the other ingredients in the bowl, but then again the price is inexpensive. My friend ordered the BBQ Beef bowl and it also looked nice. The kaarage chicken we ordered as a side was served first, and this was tasty. Well-seasoned and goes well with the mayo and a glass of beer.
The place is small and gets busy especially with office workers looking for lunch, but once you get the attention of staff you are served promptly.
After working upstairs, a quick trip downstairs discovered this amazing little spot! Value for money was the first thing I noticed! Sharing the kitchen of ebisu meant the food was full of flavor and style! A much recommended lunch or dinner location!
Cosy venue. Fast and friendly service. Tasty food and drink options. Japanese bar with a nice vibe. Great option for us as a pre Eden Park stop.
Awesome staff! Shout out to Izy for having a sick music taste! Quality casual Japanese restaurant with nice food and nice vibes. Very nice cocktails.
Came here for a drink and some nibbles with a friend last night. Small but cool atmosphere and it was pretty busy when we arrived round 7 but eventually we were the only people left. The calamari is yum and they give a good generous helping of Edemame beans too! Another time I came, I had the roast duck taco and that was delicious too. Highly recommend!
Good place, reasonably priced for it’s location and food quality. I got their teriyaki chicken bowl for $14 at lunch time and it was pretty good. My friend had mixed sushi and liked it as well.
Came on a Thursday night for canapes and drinks as part of Savour + Switch. We were served their Seared Hokkaido Scallops and were blown away. Their Hikari cocktail was the perfect starter drink! Hubby and I are keen to come back soon!
Lovely atmosphere and definitely a good spot for late night snack and drink. The snack price is quite reasonable. We had the pork bun, beef taco and chicken popcorn which were lovely. I would prefer the bun then taco. I think the taco was alright but not very special. More than anything, I enjoyed the Umu- plum wine here. Not many places in Auckland that you can find serving plum wine.
Quite a cozy find of this compact Japanese sushi place. Besides sushi you will encounter more authentic flavours.
Really enjoy standing in front of the sushi bar and pick up your own choices. Salmon nigiri, egg roll sushi, inrai pocket nigiri, spicy yellow fin tuna and of course the cliche California roll are all delights to your tastebuds, and eyes.
We would like to explore a bit further. So the tempura fish taco with curry paste and the teriyaki tofu donburi came into our mind. Taco is made on site and the fish batter tasted crispy. I enjoyed my colourful bowl of teriyaki tofu Donburi, piled up veggies seasoned with shichimi(Japanese spicy power), you need to discover the cute Fried tofu and the rice buried beneath the veggie salad, which made us feel like an exploration for flavour fun.
Service is attentive and fast, for lunch time it was packed however you can always choose your own sushi put it in an organic take-away box with chopsticks and eat it in the sun.
Btw, Fukuko has a good selection of Japanese whisky. Next time wouldn't mind try it to mingle with fried chicken. JK:)
Really enjoyed this place for lunch. Service was friendly and efficient and the food is super good value especially the donburi. I ordered the teriyaki donburi and it was full of chicken pieces and salad, the presentation was impressive for a donburi too. Would totally return
Love this small bar with its wide range of whiskey and classy cocktails. Japanese inspired, all things perfect.
The vibe, music, just a great place to have a drink after work, or a pre dinner drink around the area.
Nice and cozy ambience. The service was good, staff offered to give us their best sellers and wines not listed on the menu. Just a small place but a nice place to hangout.
A little sibling of sorts to Metro Top 50 veteran Ebisu, Fukuko is just the place if you want to grab a quick lunch or cocktails and Japanese tapas that won’t break the bank. With tacos starting at $6 a piece and cocktails at $14, this is an inner-city spot that offers a great location and great food for a great price.
Great drinks and nibbles. I enjoyed my plum wine and salt and pepper squid. Modern coziness ambience. Convenient location. Good for business meetings.
Went here for a quick lunch with my partner. Worked on all levels - food (donburi) was quick, tasty and not overly expensive. Service person was quite familiar (we were her 'lovelies' and her 'honey') - not a biggie. They don't serve coffee but our wait person kindly directed us to the nice café next door. Will be back for quick lunch.
Sharing a kitchen with Ebisu, this bar nails both its food and bar menu. Whether you're looking for a bite, a nice cocktail or a bit of both, Fukuko is a great choice. The space is cozy but feels airy enough for some personal space. 👌
My go to for lunch when I get sick of eating pizza everyday.
I've tried almost everything on the menu - excluding the squid & fried chicken because it's available at TSG & Ebisu as well.
Nori chips were good, had a good spice of wasabi to it, although a bit expensive ($6) for a handful. It's not vegan friendly as it contains eggs product.
Pork buns are great, I could eat the bun itself with some hoisin sauce alone. Fluffy & just the right texture and size to snack on while having a drink.
Love the tacos - a bit of Mexican & Japanese melded together. A lot of my co workers love the beef, however I'm a huge fan of the duck taco and would recommend 100%. I feel you get a bit more filling with the pulled pork and duck tacos than you do with the beef or fish tempura tacos.
Lettuce cups. AMAZING. 10/10 love love love. Definitely worth while since its 3/pieces for $8. If you're a fan of ceviche give it a try. Healthy little mouthfuls of ceviche in little lettuce cups. No carbs, no regrets.
Donburi's are another great thing to try on this menu. It's extremely filling. Whilst I have a preference to the tofu & salmon ones, I've heard the teriyaki chicken donburi is decent as well. For me, the beef Donburi is too intense - I can only get through half of it before feeling sick as it's just so... Hearty.
The tofu one is vegan friendly, so would recommend to vegans & vegetarians.
Edamame, healthy & to be honest with 1-2 tacos, it's a nice light meal to settle your stomach.
I've only had a glass of the Te Whare Ra Toru a while ago & it reminded me of Chardonnay for some one reason. And I've tried the cloudy plum wine - on the sweeter side, so if you're interested in trying Japanese style wine, have a look at the types they offer!
I love this place, it's consistent and never let's me down. Almost don't like raving about it too much because it feels like a hidden gem you don't want to get too popular. It's a small bar that shares a kitchen with ebisu. The staff are super friendly and helpful, they make you feel like you're old mates. They play mostly old school beats which gives it a nice chill feeling. I have only been here on nites so not sure what the day vibe is like. The food is amazing and comes out super quick too. The fried chicken is so juicy and comes with everyone's fav japanese mayo. The squid so tender with a hint of wasabi in the dipping sauce. Pork buns soft and tangy. Nori chips so mourish and salty with such an interesting texture. They do japanese inspired cocktails with some different flavour combos. Great place to go before or after somewhere else or even just to relax for a long lazy nite
Spent $25 but tried 4 different cold and hot dishes there. Tasty & fresh food materials. Nori chips was awesome texture. Pork Bun was served with $6 each, for a slim bun skin with two small pieces of pork belly, it's too expensive. Service was really good.
Came here for some late night drinks. What a cracking little place this is!! Real charm and Japanese vibe. Bartender was top class and even joined us for a sake!! Definitely a place to return to.
Such nice service and food - pork buns are 10/10 but i wish the chicken had more flavour!! But funky and cool place to go to - wish it was bigger!

One of the best little spots in town just waiting to be discovered and unearthed to redeem all of it's glory! This place reeks of the modern yet trendy and cultured Japanese bar with a tapas menu to keep you going for plenty of hours and luscious cocktails in between! I really take my hat off to the management and staff here! They have really nailed it! The cocktail menu is nothing short of gob smacking !!! Wow...just Wow!
I went here for a quick lunch today with a friend and loved it. The place was packed, great ambience and the food was great. We had the fried chicken to share and a taco each which was definitely enough. The wine I had was lovely but I'll be back for more food and to try the cocktails for sure. Great for a mid week lunch, get in early to get your table though!
Cocktails 5/5
Food 4.5/5
Fav little bar downtown for sure
I came here the other day for lunch and a drink with some friends. The selling point for me was definitely the $5.50 steamed pork bun which seemed too good to be true as their counterparts at the Blue Breeze Inn and Judge Bao are more around the $12 mark. They were a lot smaller than other pork buns I've had before and unfortunately not as great as Blue Breeze and Judge Bao.
My friends raved about their tofu donburi's so that could be the dish to get.
This place definitely has a real bar atmosphere and is quite small. The tables were a little rickety and awkward and you had to order at the bar/ fetch water for yourself.
That said, the cocktail menu was extensive and really interesting.
The cocktails weren't as strong as expected - this could've been due to the Shochu base? The Koruba Club and Fukuko Smash were v. enjoyable.
I think I'd come back and try the donburi and another shochu cocktail.
Heard about this place everywhere I look on the internet so going in was imminent. Tried their tacos and it was great! Serving is on the smaller side, but it was filling enough. Great place for snacking.
Met up with some friends at lunchtime today. I ordered the Salt & Pepper Squid and a Pork Bun. The Salt & Pepper squid was cooked perfectly and had a light bite to it, was extremely enjoyable. The pork pun was delicious with the love pork belly cooked to perfection and just melts in your mouth.
TOP 10 PICKS - I adore this little bar - however I wish it were a larger restaurant. No reservations here people- thats how good this place is. I love the open pork buns, tacos and edamame beans. Multicultural pallet teaser but all soooo delicious! My fav cocktail is the earl grey martini - crisp, sweet but yet tarty - with an tea finish to end - served often with a candied slice of lime. Must try!!!
We came here for cocktails on a busy Friday night. The place isn't big but they're done a lot with the space. The tables are quite large but they're arranged in different combinations so you can fit in with almost any size group.
The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, even bringing my drink over to my table so I didn't have to stand around waiting for a while. They were all dressed to the nines and looked incredibly dapper. I ordered an 1841 which was delicious with a tart flavour and a beautifully preserved lime on top. I also tried the Earl Grey Martini which was lovely. It truly tasted like tea which I loved.
Unfortunately the music was quite loud for such a small space. They had a live DJ in the corner that took up a lot of space as well. I would have preferred a sound system with something a little softer playing.
The decor was lovely with old bottles on top of shelves and gold fish in a jar (it's big enough and has a filter). My favourite item of decor though was the framed taxi company numbers on the wall in case you've had a bit too much. I think more bars should have this available.
Overall I really enjoyed my cocktail. I'd be interested to come back and try the food as well.
Just had lunch here at Fokuko and enjoyed their tacos very much. Tried their sole tempura taco that was juicy and had a bit of spiciness to it which was great. The roasted duck taco was delicious as well. I liked the sweetness of the duck.
The place is great for people who work around the area and looking for a bite to grab for lunch. There's a funky vibe to it. A modern type Japanese resto bar. The staff are friendly as well. Overall, enjoyed our quick lunch here at Fokuko.
Tucked away to Tyler Street Garage, a small sign points to one of the best kept secrets, Fukuko. As a first, or even second or third time comer, there’s plenty to look at. It’s not your typical after work bar with pulsating music pierced with roars of laughter – there’s an air of certain sophistication and innovativeness.
Framed by dark wooden beams with polished concrete floors and stools covered by rabbit fur flaps, there’s a certain edgy or even quirky vibe. You’ll notice the big jars which look a bit like movie props from a sci-fi movie with the fluorescent colours.
And that is the shōchū infusing right in front of yours eyes. Say what?
Certainly not a mispelled “sake” or “soju”. Shōchū originated in the southern regions of Japan and is a distilled spirit with an alcohol content of typically 25%, depending on distillation process. Unlike sake which is brewed, the distillation process means that the more shōchū is distilled, the purer it is. For a single distillation, the shōchū is made with one raw material which gives it the raw and distinct aromas. Multiple distillations where the shōchū goes through several distillations mean that it is smoother, and ideal for mixing cocktails.
No matter what the ingredients, shōchū is always has a clear and light flavor. And this little known drink is what is embraced by Fukuko, which boasts a cocktail menu designed by mixologist Paul Franich.
You’ll find the now-famous Earl Grey martini – concocted with early grey and juniper berry shōchū – freshened with sugar and lemon juice. Exquisite.
Then there’s the Kappa, a refreshing combination of cucumber and mint. Fukuko takes its own twists on the classics and when you run your eyes down the menu, you can see the cheeky personality that brought us the drinks.
You’ll want to try their East-meets-West food with the drinks though. For a nibble, there are the nori-chips. Seaweed is no longer reserved just for sushi! These are deceptively healthy, you’ll find yourself reaching for more until your fingers hit the bottom.
On the website, Fukuko humbly calls itself a shōchū and snack bar, but you will find yourself more full than you expected with these pork buns. Stuffed full of pork belly, cucumber and spring onion, you’ll be smacking the sweet hoisin sauce with a satisfied sweep of your tongue against your lips.
Everything I had was light and delightful, including the drinks. Having been there for after-work drinks and mid afternoon bites, there’s one thing that caught my eye on the menu. Their chocolate peanut butter milkshake and “Japa Dogs” – American hotdogs stuffed with options of teriyaki chicken, crumbed pork belly or braised beef.

A couple of friends and I caught up at Fukuko on a cold, rainy night. It is a surprisingly warm and cozy space with clean lines, dark decor, mood lighting, just a few tables tables and plenty of standing room. The jars and bottles of sochu may be decoration and/or ingredients for cocktails. We visited on a quiet weeknight but I can see this place filling up easily.
I was pleasantly surprised by the food here. Very good Japanese fusion bar snacks. The menu is very interesting and there were many I wanted to try. There are not many vegetarian options and gluten free options not marked on menu.
We tried:
Pork belly steamed buns
Spiced roast duck taco
Sticky pulled pork taco
Sole tempura taco
Fukuko fried chicken
Salt pepper squid
Their pork buns and tacos are divine. The softest, loveliest buns I’ve eaten in a long time. The pork belly steamed buns, sole tempura taco and the fried chicken were the stand out dishes. The food was really fresh and really good. The flavours were divine and it’s surprising these are fusion rather than classics.
Their cocktail is extensive and very experimental, though sometimes the experiments have gone wrong. The food is miles better than the cocktails. The cocktails we had ranged from very sweet to OK to disgusting. I had the disgusting cocktail, the Woohoo. Not recommended at all. I like beer and I like tequila but something about them mixed was awful.
The service is great. There was just one man behind the bar who came to our table and talked us through the menu and specials. More staff in the kitchen who made brief appearances. The food comes out really quickly. Please note, this is a bar rather than a restaurant. You might not always get table service, especially when busy.
We enjoyed the Auckland Restaurant Months special $25 FOR TWO COURSES AND A SHOCHU COCKTAIL: Courses include a steamed pork bun, your choice of tacos and Fukuko shochu cocktail (from the $14 menu) of your choice and added on 2 extra dishes to share which made our total around $30 per person. A lovely cheap night out.
The food actually deserves a 4.5 rating my cocktail brought down the overall rating.
Fukuko (meaning 'lucky child' in Japanese) is a small but funky bar tucked away down Tyler St in Britomart. Serving shochu (somwhere between sake and whiskey) drinks/cocktails and snack food, Fukuko is the perfect place to go to for after work drinks and Japanese bar food.
A friend and I came here for a light meal and shochu cocktail one Thursday night. We had just spend an hour shopping as part of Britomart's VIP Winter Shopping Spree. It was relatively quiet when we arrived, but soon filled up while we were looking at the menu. We decided on the shochu cocktails. I ordered the 'Baku' ($16) which consisted of whiskey, lime juice, sugar, mint and blended together with an egg white. Very interesting cocktail, as the egg white made it creamier!
For food, we ordered two lots (to share) of the Steamed Pork Buns ($5.50) with pork belly, cucumber, spring onion and hoisin sauce and the New Style Sashimi Lettuce Cups ($6.50) with seared tuna, avocado, jalapeno and lime. Both dishes were fantastic! The pork buns were perfect and the sashimi lettuce cups fresh and tasty. I would definitely come back just to try these two dishes again - maybe next time I will order three of each!!!
Great staff, I felt well taken care of here.
Food was very good in terms of presentation and flavour, but was a little cold and the chicken did not taste fresh. Decent price for the amount you get. The menu while varied, was a little lacking in the meals dept so I'd recommend Fukuko for drinks only.
I also disliked the backless chairs, but they are my pet peeve ;)
Fukuko does absolutely sublime small plates of Japanese food. I stopped in for some lunch, and ordered the agedashi tofu, which, even if you are not a fan of the stuff will make you a convert. This, I believe, was infact the best agedashi tofu I've ever had. The crisp fried exterior, and the delicious soft insides melting into your mouth as you bite through it... plus the curly ensemble of spring onion sitting up high on top of the square was full of flavour, and then the tasty salty goodness of the miso sauce underneath. Japanese perfection.
I also had salt and pepper squid - also perfectly executed. I had to get my remainder to-go though, as I was full.
Friendly waitress found a spot for me at the bar, as all tables were busy (except one reserved).
I was nearly tempted to have one of their tonics... but thought it would be unwise at lunchtime to indulge in alcohol - but the descriptions of vegetables, fruits, etc 'utterly macerated' and laid over ice sounded intriguing. Next time, I think.
Fans of Japanese food will want to check this place out, as these guys do it extremely well.
Fukuko is a fun take on Japanese bar food, with fusions such as Japanese pulled pork tacos and classics like karaage fried chicken, it's great option for when catching up with friends, or after work drinks with your colleagues
It's not the biggest of venues, but if you're able to secure yourself a bar stool and table, it's a great intimate and cozy bar. The drinks are original and fresh and reasonably priced for a CBD venue. Definitely try the Earl Gray Martini!
After a chance encounter (when I was meant to be at Bikram no less) Fukuko has become a firm favourite for easy lower CBD eating.
Think of it like a Japanese version of Mexico with 'Japanese' tacos, steamed pork belly buns, fried chicken and salt and pepper squid being favourites of their small but perfectly formed menu.
Then there are the cocktails. I am not entirely ashamed to say that over the course of two days, two visits I managed to knock off tasting every $14 cocktail on the menu. All of them are divine but my particular favourites are the Gimlet and Earl Grey Martini. The Tessen is also pretty tasty if you're a fan of sparkling wine.
With tall stools and tiny tables, Fukuko is definitely not designed for a long meal, but when you're catching up with friends for a bite and a drink it's perfect.
Lots of ticks from me!

This little hole in the wall is hard to find, but if you do, you'll find a casual selection of popular Japanese whiskeys (not top shelf, or rare, but still great for a common drop). There's ramen, deep fried chicken and lots of nibbles to be found. The atmosphere is casual, dark and intimate and on the weeknight I went, was really nice - not noisy and laidback.
Awesome staff, delicious ramen. Egg was perfect! Chashu pork sliced up pretty thickly but so full of flavour. Nori chips were liberally coated in wasabi powder, very spicy, very tasty. Would recommend.
Extensive cocktail and whiskey menu.
- Great Cocktails - Nagasaki Sour 👌
- Chicken Karage 👌
- Chicken Teriyaki Donburi - Good mix of different flavours
- Tonkotsu - Great, but prefer to have soft-boiled over hard boiled and a spoon to scoop the soup 😜
Would highly recommend for a late night drinks with some wholesome food to keep it chill
I had great fresh snack food (Japanese style fried chicken with garlic mayo) combined with professionally made Negroni. Very friendly and knowledgeable service. Good music was playing at a comfy volume for a modern place like this. Some Mexican Japanese fusion on the menu too!
Amazing selection of Japanese ingredients and house infusions. Alessio is crafting incredible drinks in Auckland. Must visit.
The food was really good. The steamed pork bun was super soft and had great flavour. Good balance of sweet, and savoury. The roast duck taco is also great. The duck was tender and was really impressed by the Asian take on a soft shell taco. The atmosphere is nice inside and they have a good selection of Japanese whisky and spirits in general.
Delicious food and cocktails! Very quick everything. I'd definitely recommend it!
Cool, smaller sized Japanese cocktail bar. They have fantastic array of cocktails, as well as a small selection of imported Japanese beers, and some cracking Japanese whiskies. Food isn't "traditional" but fun and tasty and not too pricey either. Be sure to grab a plate of the Fukuko Fried Chicken and a taco or two.
Nice staff too. Only minus is their odd opening hours on weekends, otherwise I'd be there all the time!
Cocktails are a 10/10. While there may be a few small preference differences, it still shines pretty well deserving of a 5. Delicious ramen and duck taco, but pork bun was quite dry by itself (they've got a suggested sauce for it though). Some chairs need repairs and the high tables are a little awkward to sit at with their layered iron bars. Couches looked comfy though. Front of house staff were super friendly, attentive, and helpful.
We had an amazing time here! The bartender was the sweetest and makes the most amazing cocktails. He makes his own infusions which is super cool! Definitely great for people who like to try different cocktails.
Randomly stumbled upon this place. The bartender (Alessio) clearly knows his stuff, made great recommendations based on our taste and is very passionate about flavours and researching new recipes. What a delightful experience, thank you! This place is now saved in “My favourites’
Really cool little bar for a late night cocktail. We were looking for a place to grab a drink after dinner without music blaring. This place had a DJ playing some great tunes and a good cocktail menu too!
I went on Sat 6th June 2020 and I have to say, I was extremely impressed with the service there. As a gender non confirming person, I felt amazed at the level of kindness and safety the bar person offered us. I always brace myself for the "Hey girls/ladies" when I go anywhere with my partner; the misgendering is inevitable. However the lovely bar person immediately corrected themselves and apologized without any prompts from us. Then when we went to pay, he said again "I'm sorry, it's never good to assume." Thank you for hiring this lovely person, he made us feel incredibly safe and taken care of. PLUS - the drinks were amazing :)
Funky bar! Excellent service and spectacular tacos!
Good food with value for money. I miss their cabinet sushi though! A great option for lunch if you are craving for Japanese Rice Bowls within Britomart area.
You will not regret eating here. Perfect knowledgeable staff and exceptionally tasty food. I would highly recommend and I will definitely will make this a regular place to eat.
very chilled spot with heaps of atmosphere if you hit it at the right time.
