I've visited this restaurant twice this past few months, and each time it's a pleasant surprise! The owners are incredibly friendly, the service is quick, and roast duck and roast pork are worth dying for. In a city overloaded with Chinese cuisine, this place definitely has its reasons to call itself 'King'.
This hidden bbq gem is down a side street and little known but calling all bbq and meat lovers this is the one stop restaurant in town all meat is done on site and the bbq pork and crispy pork is to die for!!!!! The duck is another favorite of mine and with a extensive menu there will be something for all !!! I’m a chef and meat lover and this is the best gem in town
Well if you read the majority of the comments in here you'll probably run away from BBQ King but I went there for lunch today with a work colleague. It is not that bad! I reckon they have one of the best if not the best roast duck in town. I had the double roast duck + roast pork on rice while my colleague had the standard roast duck - they are both amazing, especially the roast duck. Will definitely come back again for more 😋😜😂
I've been going here for around 10 years. Your typical Chinese/Hong-Kong BBQ joint - with one difference: they make THE best Chicken & Salted Fish Fried Rice. If this is your dish at other Chinese restaurants, you have to try it at this place. The lady behind the counter is very friendly too and they have a good selection of soft drinks and Asian drinks in the fridge.
You had me at Fried Rice
I'm a great fan of healthy helpings of rice. Especially when the meat is not skimped on.
Always met with tea and broth to enjoy.
Food is always super fast.
Was in the area so just popped in for the choice combination (3) of bbq on rice which I always get roast duck, crispy and bbq pork. It's in the same league as what you can get anywhere in town but not bad. Service and ambience is standard.
11 years ago we were invited for lunch after church and have been enjoying their food at least once a month ever since! Eventually met owner and know staff as well.
My favourite is the combination Soy Chicken/Crispy Pork on rice plus.... there's always a plus..deep fried squid tentacles with garlic and chili ( a must try ). The rest of the Family would either settle for combination fried noodles or bbq pork on rice, yummy choices.
For $13 per order ( Fried Squid is cheaper I think) and servings are generous, enough to satisfy one. I always look forward to the starter soup specially winter which is just a broth that was probably boiling for the last 11 years as well. yumm!!!!!
Tasty food and friendly service. Free pot of tea and a bowl of porkbone stew with every meal! Did not expect that when they brought them out soon as I sat down I mean this is just a fast food restaurant afterall! Portions are huge - I was already full and had about half leftover. I asked them to put less salt in my noodles and they were like sure no problem. And the lady at the checkout was so nice when I asked if I could have a doggy bag for my leftovers she was like yes of course! Just so friendly! A meal for 2 only about $25.
A good BBQ Restaurant. The range of items on the menu was good. the staff were friendly and the restaurant was clean. I would definitely go again.
My best favorite Chinese style BBQ restaurant in town. Their roasted meat dishes were very tasty and big serving size. Average price for a regular main dish is $14.00 ~ $16.00 They offers free meat and veg. soup if you visit there at an early time.
Been wanting to try out this place, since I was craving Chinese food. My friend and I came in pretty early, before lunch hour. We were given a pot of tea, and a bowl of soup. The soup's taste was quite strong. What can you say about MSG? Left me really thirsty. I ordered the Mapo Tofu with rice for $11.80. The food came out quick, and I thought it was going to be spicy since there was small pieces of chilli, but it wasn't spicy at all. It wasn't too sweet and not too salty. The sauce was so good, and the tofu was cut into bite sized pieces. Mixing the sauce and the rice was absolutely perfect. Service was great, even though they don't show it through words, but through expression. I am going to come back here another day! Very pleased.
Had 2 BBQ choices on rice takeaway (phone order), the meat is very tasty, good quality. Unfortunately they weren't generous with the rice. First time when I opened a takeaway box I could right away see the bottom of the box. Staff mistake? Not filling at all for $14.80. May try again and if it happens again I will post a photo here.
Just moved to Auckland from Hong Kong and have been craving some authentic Cantonese food. This restaurant has some seriously good roast meat and the complimentary soup is always delicious. I would come here just for the soup - it's that good. Big thumbs up from this Cantonese!
I really enjoyed my meal here. This is like any other chinese restaurant in Auckland. The prices are good, the portions are generous and they give you a decent amount of meat.
They also give you soup.
We ordered the pork belly with Tofu on rice and the red braised pork ribs. Unfortunately I forgot to take a photo of the Tofu and pork belly on rice, which also happened to me my favourite dish of the 2 dishes.
Perfect place for quick lunch and family meal. The food quality is average, very generous portion👧🏻 some dishes are really tasty like the beef fried Hor fun (697 kcal) 😂
The food was great, especially the crispy skin pork belly! The restaurant itself is located right in the heart of Auckland. Highly recommended for people who have passion for Chinese cuisine. You won't regret it!
This restaurant is an authentic Chinese experience. It's cheapish and the food is okayish. That may not sound like a compliment but because they are open till 10.30 if you're looking for something and it's lateish then this is delish! I particularly like their BBQ meats and stir fry noodles. Also they have friendly quick service with free soup and green tea. Worthwhile.
Huge menu, fairly well priced. Big variety but hard to choose if you don't speak/read Chinese. The English descriptions don't really describe what it is unless you understand the Chinese meanings. I've had some dishes here that I really enjoyed but might be hard to tell you what they are called!! The BBQ meat options are outstanding in terms of the meat. I love the duck here. On to the environment, remember how I said it is 'Authentic'? Well perhaps that is not the right word when it comes to the decor it's like walking into a food court. Not that clean, fluorescent lit with no real warmth or character. I have dined in, which comes with the added bonus of soup and tea served before and after your meal but I'd just as likely get takeaway.
Busy enough on a weekday lunch time, BBQ is generous to your wallet and tummy.
Lovely behemoth sized portions, this is a great spot to recharge on some hearty wholesome Chinese food.
Showstopper: Portion to Price is excellent
Overall Grade: B
One of my go to places for chinese food when in town! All the dishes are well rounded with a good dish to rice ratio and the portions are quite generous! Great deal for students. I would really recommend the sweet and sour fish, anything from their congee range and any of the laksas. Service is also extremely friendly.
My first visit to what seems a pretty popular Chinese restaurant on the queen street..we were served pork soup and green tea as welcome beverages..we ordered a soya chicken on rice.. shredded duck roast laksa and veg fried rice with egg..the fried rice was cooked to perfection and had a healthy dose of veggies like broccoli, mushrooms and green onions..spiced to suit our Indian pallet..soya chicken and the lamb laksa tasted awesome and very served piping hot..just the way I like it..the duck wasbas succulent as the chicken... Come again? Yes I will come again
Went here tonight after work and it was super cold... got a super hot lamb soup thingy and my better half got bbq pork on rice (as they ran out of the crispy pork) and it was great!!! Very reasonable prices and they also have an A grade :) great for those chilly nights where u just want to get all warmed up :)
I've written something re this resto before and I just wanted to update that. Took my boys and wife here yesterday and noticed that they had a new chef, it's the first I see him behind the stove.
He makes the best combination fried noodles! it's much different from before, so much tastier, a lot more gravy or sauce and heaps of meat! I truly recommend that you guys try this dish!
Fantastic place for authentic Chinese food. Definitely the place to go to for a quick lunch fix with guaranteed food quality. I love the duck here, always crispy skin n fresh. The food is served very fast and the quantity is always more than enough. My favourite is roast duck with soup rice noodles.
Last night was one of the rare occasions we eat at BBQ K instead of getting takeaways.
Dining area, vents and cooking furnace is noisy with kitchen in earshot. Basic layout comforms to a canteen standard. Staff are very good and waiting staff skilled enough to prepare some meals.
We have some clear favorite dishes. Seafood fried rice ive been ordering for more than five years. Roast duck with thin noodle called mei fun also excellent. Servings large and prices were really cheap now ok to cheap. Popular with the 20-something crowd in big groups. Agree this I a cheap n cheerful class place. Owner manager holding Marcus Wong aged 7 weeks.
It's great I have eaten there once a week I love the BBQ roast food, great staff, they do give lots of rice or noodles but it's an Asian place so what do you expect.
Great value-for money and amazing variety, if you like Chinese.
I have been to this restaurant many times and am always impressed by the amount of food you get for your dollar. Not only is it a lot of food but the food is good. It is also nice that you get complimentary soup while you wait and can sip tea with your meal.
It can accommodate you whether for a single meal or a group of friends. I feel this restaurant deserves an 8 out of 10. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone that is looking for a good tasting meal in an open and friendly atmosphere.
Cheap n fast Chinese food. Good taste, highly reccomended
A nice little Chinese restaurant hidden away just off queen street. The food is pretty cheap, the portions a generous and there is plenty of flavour in the dishes i have tried. The staff is not entirely enthusiastic but its not much of a big deal. there are plenty of seats and large tables, good for bday dinners or group lunches. There is definitely nothing fancy about this place but if you're fine with that and just want some good ol' Chinese food, then you should probably check it out. Woof.
Nice place for Chinese comfort food. Free soup and Chinese tea given for lunch. Enjoyed myself and good value
The chinese BBQ dishes here are one of the better ones in CBD.
The portion of meat which seems to have reduced during my recent visits can hopefully be improved.
One of the nicer BBQ pork and Roast duck rice. Free soup and Chinese tea. Good bright atmosphere and friendly boss. Would be better if the chilli sauce had more ingredients in it rather than the oil. Always patronise when in Auckland. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
BBQ King serves authentic hong Kong style Deli food with a wide selection of different stir fry with rice options. Complimentary soup is tasty and served pipping hot and they are happy to refill the soup should you ask! The roast duck is tender and crispy pork extremely tasty. The black pepper Chix over rice is tasty and very reminiscent of ordering from a hong kong kar kar lok. Won't go wrong trying this place out!
A nice Chinese restaurant close to our hotel. The restaurant has open clean see through kitchen. They specialize in Chinese bbq. The price was very reasonable and the meal come with free hot tea and soup.
I saw the laksa on the menu and had to try it. I had the roast duck laksa. They gave like almost half a duck in the laksa. The duck was juicy, savory and flavorful. My brother had the 3 meat bbq plate with rice. The pork was savory. The charsui with just the right amount of sweetness.
If you are in this part of the world make sure to stop by and try this place.
I like the food. The BBQ was nice, fujian fried rice on point for me.
Our U12 rugby team visiting from Chch had dinner here tonight. I booked online having never been there, but I liked the menu. Tim was fantastic to deal with, he created a menu just for us. The kids and adults loved all of the food, They had a very enjoyable time. Highly recommend!
One of the best place in the CBD for Chinese food. The owners are really friendly and you get a bowl of soup and Chinese tea as soon as you sit down. My favorites are the roast duck and roast pork with rice. Another gem is the roast duck laksa noodle (photo below) which is to die for and possibly the only restaurant in NZ to offer this combination! And speaking as a Malaysian living in NZ, that laksa broth is authentic! Highly recommended.
BBQ King is an amazing experience. Food was 10/10. It is desperately needing customers to return again after Covid. Locals come and support this restaurant, it is definitely worth saving. Thanks for an amazing meal and complimentary soup.
5 stars. This place is a dying breed of old Cantonese cuisine. Great tasting food, wok hei, and the servings sizes are generous. Rare to see this in a capital cities CBD. As a Cantonese that eats Cantonese food daily - this place is legit and great. Must try!
Really good Chinese food, I ordered the 3 combination and all the meat were really delicious. Worth trying out if you haven’t before.
Authentic HK style bbq pork restaurant. Free soup if you dine in. Portion is big. Definitely worth trying if you are in town. The service is good too.

The beef brisket noodle soup is amazing. Clean and tidy lovely staff. Highly recommend
Hard to beat the sweet and sour pork. The beans and mince pork, salt and pepper pork and crispy pork all good. Sizzling beef is amazing too.
Still the best in 2023!
This place has such an extensive menu and everything looks so yummy. Price is reasonable as well. I had their 2 meat combo with BBQ pork and duck. Paired perfectly with their home made plum sauce. Will definitely be going back to try some more dishes.
I also did a takeaway of just plain BBQ pork meat cause it was so good.
👍YUM YUM YUM! THIS PLACE IS A MUST VISIT WHEN YOU ARE IN THE CBD!
Amazing amount of food at such a great price! This place is our local to go to when we want a great feed! The service is always so friendly and fast! When you arrive you get hot tea and a bowl of their yummy duck broth soup with bits of duck and veggies. Your meal comes out fast and you have a feast before your eyes! Great quality and we are always so full and completely satisfied when we leave. Thank you for your amazing food and friendly smiles! See you again soon!
