Here's a tucked away little German restaurant that many seem to know about but I have only just discovered at Kohimarama called Der Metz.
What I liked:
1. Definitely the place you want to head to when celebrating Oktober Fest as the pork knuckle called 'Pork Hock' here is as huge as a baby's head comes served 'knife-in'
2. Generous cuts of meat and the one we ordered came beautifully slathered in a thick lovely peppercorn sauce complete with salad and fries.
3. The other reviewers have observed correctly that most people especially the women ask for a doggy bag takeaway as the portions are generally a lot to eat at one go but thats great if you are going straight home after and want left overs for another hearty meal.
4. The sauerkraut was good but a tad salty so go easy. Loved the spatzle and could have had that all on its own. Had no space for dessert but will be back for some next time.
5. Service was not the fastest but the restaurant fills up quickly at dinner time and on a weekend, it definitely has its fair share of regulars so I recommend you book ahead and be prepared to wait it out a bit for the kitchen to handle your order.
6. Fun interior with interesting decor and an overall good selection of German / European Beers

4.5 out of 5. First of, let me just say that this was probably the best dine I've ever had in this place since last year. Been here a few times and the first time I ordered the pork hock I was so by how soggy it tasted. But today I decided to give it another try and was blown away by the crispy skin and tasty meat. Also ordered the goulash which I thought was better than what I had in Vienna. The pork schnitzel was not as great as the chicken but still a favorite. Overall a good meal but extremely slow service.
Best schnitzel ever!!!!! Amazing wheat beers as well. Perfect place.đ great location too. I wanna try the special pork knee that looks delicious đ
Charming German restaurant with excellent food and service. Exceptionally large meals, best to go withan empty stomach. The schnitzel is a must. Great vaue !
Beware of the two portion schnitzel its absolutely and insane portion of food! Paprikaschnitzel with chips was good but i would definately go one portion maybe even to share as they offer alot of other food you could try as well. Beer selection fantastic go for the konig ludwig if you are a dark beer fan. Great service and the staff are freindly as. Fluent in german too!
Densely themed restaurant with great tasting food and friendly German wait staff. The location of the restaurant is a bit far from other restaurants and shops but parking is available. Portion sizes used to be huge but thatâs been significantly reduced and the prices have remained the same. Would be 5 stars in my opinion if they hadnât made the change.
This place is a little hidden treasure in mission bay. My family have been coming here for a few years now, ever since we found it. It is huge portions and cheap so if you love that this place is for you. Always have the schnitzel and the taste is amazing. My favourite is the cordon Bleu with the creamy mushroom sauce and potato salad. Everyone that comes here loves it.
We ate here recently and now this place is my wifeâs favourite restaurant. The schnitzels are so huge and cooked to perfection. Great price as well. Very good range of beers too.
I like the ambience and the german beer. The staff is friendly but just that tad bit impatient. Small things like that matter so many just need a tweak there. The food quantity is great so be careful how much you order. The taste was good but not great. Still i love going there. I wish they had more space. It is cramped. Also being a little out of the main mission bay area makes parking easy. Overall keep up the good work

Der Metz is one of the only establishments that serves authentic German cuisine in a sit down environment in Auckland. The German decor, memorabilia, banners and posters immediately make you feel as if you were at a beer hall in Germany herself, definitely one of my favourite restaurant atmospheres in Auckland. They have a wide selection of authentic German dishes, desserts and beers (which can come in massive 1L kegs, staying true to its German roots).
I came here with a group of 8 and ordered 2 plates of the pork hock, 2 Chicken Schnitzels, 2 Deutsche Plattes, an order of the KĂ€sespĂ€tzle and 2 massive mugs of German beer (I don't even like beer that much but found myself wanting to have some more of the HofbrĂ€u Original beer because it was that good). The portion sizes are HUGE and are such great value for money! Considering it was not that busy when we went our food arrived in a reasonable time and service was quick and reliable.Â
The 2 piece Chicken Schnitzels ("2 piece" is quite the understatement, you get more like 4-5 pieces of sizable schnitzel) was served with a mushroom sauce and you can choose from either a side of chips, mashed potato or salad. The Schnitzel itself was good by itself but we found ourselves ordering some extra mushroom sauce to match the quantity of Schnitzel we received. The mushroom sauce I feel really enhances the otherwise plain breaded Schnitzel.Â
The pork hock was impressive in its size and would definitely satisfy even the most hungry carnivore. 1 order will definitely be good for 4 people. The skin was crispy and the meat was tender. It is served with a side of their house sauerkraut, gravy and some plain SpÀtzle .
My favourite was the Deutsche Platte which included a sampling of their pork belly, pork roast, NĂŒrnberger pork sausages and potato dumplings served with Sauerkraut and Rotkraut (red cabbage) all doused in gravy. All the elements of the platter was very delicious. The pork belly was so flavourful and tender, the pork roast was a bit tougher but had a more smoky roasted flavour and their sausages were perfectly flavoured and seasoned. The tangy sauerkraut and semi sweet rotkraut, which I loved, really accompanies the hearty meat dishes well. Although I wish that they had more crunch to them as the krauts are quite soft, but that's just my personal preference.
The big downside of the meal was the KĂ€sespĂ€tzle. It is a German egg noodle dish mixed with sauteed onions and cheese with some NĂŒrnberger pork sausages in the mix. The dish was bland and I couldn't taste the cheese at all, you might find yourself having to add a good heaping of salt and pepper to this dish. The noodles itself were alright and had the texture of a thick pasta. The sausages honestly saved that dish since I'm a fan of their sausages and there was quite a few sausages in the mix.
If you do decide to dine at Der Metz (which you definitely should), be prepared to take away some of your meal. I wrote this review the day after eating there and my breakfast, lunch and dinner consisted purely of leftovers from yesterday. If you're tired of fancy restaurants and cafes charging you obscene prices for a spoonful and a half of food and want a proper bang-for-your-buck feast then Der Metz is the place for you. Although I can't speak for comparisons between the authenticity of the dishes compared to food in Germany, I can say that this is as close as it gets to an authentic German dining experience in Auckland.
Real German food and decor. It was just like I was back in Germany.
This is the place to bring friends and family, especially kids who are welcome and well catered for. it is cosy and comfortable (quaint) in winter but curbside dining across from the ocean in summer is something really special.

Love the decor of this place it made me feel like I was overseas! The staff were lovely and accommodating of our requests. They recommended I try the pork schnitzel and my goodness it was huge! I had to take away half of it. The pork was tender and went well with that gravy stuff. Apple streudal was okay.
This place is great value for money. The pork hock can feed 3 to 4 people and it is truly amazing. The place is a bit small inside but they do have a long table for a big crowd. We came as a family and there were 12 of us in one table. Service is great too with humourous waitresses cracking jokes and just keeping all the guests comfortable.
Being married to a german man, I was bound to be brought here sooner or later, and I have to say I really enjoyed it.
I loved the "outdated decor and cheesy german music" (hubby's words not mine but it was said with huge affection and a big proud smile!).
I ordered the chicken schnitzel, chips and potato salad. Hubby ordered the pork schnitzel, chips and sauerkraut.
When the food cane out, I was like WOW it's massive!! Tasted delicious!! But I couldn't finish mine so hubby asked for doggy bags to take home and finish.
Waitresses are very friendly.
Really like this place (perhaps I'm slightly biased because of my german hubby lol) but overall the food was delicious, big portions, and service was good!

9 of us dined here today for lunch. On a Saturday. There was our table, and 3 other large groups there.
The young waitress promptly took orders for drinks and food. She is AMAZING!
She was waiting on all 4 of our groups basically on her own, and doing an incredible job at remembering orders, and ensuring all our needs were being met. She was also doing all the drinks.
She was obviously under extreme pressure, but she was super friendly and happy to spend the time to wait for those of our table who just couldnt decide what from the menu to order.
The food took almost an hour to arrive, but the waitress took the time to apologise to us for the wait, and explained that the largest table of diners (20 pax) were unexpected, and they were down one staff member. We were happy drinking and appreciated the clear and friendly communication. She let us know when the food was 5 minutes away.
The meals came... and they were HUGE. There were smiles all around the table, and some slightly panicked faces as people realized 1 schnitzel was probably all they needed, but we'd all ordered 2 each. At the end of the meal - everyone agreed it was delicious.
These are big hearty meals, with great German beers and a range of wines, schnapps, and the usual's all available.
We're a family with Germans in it. These meals are on par - and in the case of the Schnitzels, larger than any meal we've had in Germany.
If you want hearty food and great beer - Go!

We came here for a family lunch as we are headed to Germany in June to see our family. Very authentic aura, music, set-up and outfits etc. The waitress we had was such a delight, friendly, bubbly and genuinely happy to help/chat to you. The wait for food was average but it's not hard to tell why once it arrives, serving sizes are very generous, I recommend going on an empty stomach like we did, even then we were absolutely full and content we barely had room for dessert . Mum had a coffee and my partner and I shared a Creme Brullee (flavour of the day Baileys, drool!). Our child had an icecream sundae which came included in her $10 (also generous serving sizes!) meal. I had pork sausaged with sauerkraut and mashed potato, my mum had the pork belly which came with sauerkraut and dumplings, my partner had beef schnitzel with mashed potato (He got 2 instead of 1 because he can eat but he regrets that because 1 would have been plenty haha), our child had the chicken schnitzel which came with fries and a good side of salad. We all had Lemon Lime and Bitters (Really yum!) and mum had a vino which was also a generous serving size. Other than the food and service, the location is great, extremely close to beach with nice views but still fine to get nearby parking. Would definitely be back. Thanks!
Love the atmosphere of this restaurant. Been here few times, always get huge amount. But I certainly think it is a bit pricey. But, since its in good location and serves authentic food so I can understand the price.
The schnitzel is to die for, and big potion sizes. Pork hock amazing, the next day too... Great service indeed. Would definitely go back again.
Quantity is definitely more prominent than quality at Der Metz.
Been here 3 times with my German class, and each time the food was enjoyable and served in huge portions. (Take aways are available.) Pleasant decor and atmosphere, clean and cosy.
First time (in 2015) visiting we waited almost 2 hours for our food but we had water to drink so at least we were hungry, not thirsty AND hungry. Second time (in 2016) we preordered and arrived to find our food cold/lukewarm and waiting for us at the tables. Third time (in 2017) service was better and we didn't have to wait so long.
How authentic is Der Metz? Slightly above average. I've had plenty of food in Germany, and nothing can ever beat the quality and taste of food in Deutschland. Overall Der Metz does an okay job of replicating German food to the best of their efforts however taste of the dishes can always be refined and improved.
Recommendations: KÀsespÀtzle and Apfelstrudel
Odd additions to the menu, like lasagne, however overall hearty traditional German food and great beers, absolutely delightful waitress, great, quirky ambience too.
My boyfriend wanted to take me here for a long time now since he says its the vest schnitzel in town. I totally agree after having dinner here. It was pretty cold sitting outside but it was better since we didnt like the loud people inside the restaurant. I ordered the chicken with the mushroom and mashed potatoes while he ordered the pork schnitzel. I was told I was going to get 2 pcs. But when it arrived, it was huge! I got more than 2. Maybe 2.5pcs. I couldnt even finish it and the mushroom gravy was yummy! Would love to come back again.
Excellent service, great ambience and huge portions of food! We had the Pork Hock, Deutsche Platte, Chicken Schnitzel, Pork Spare Ribs, Chicken Nuggets and Fisch and Pommes Frites. I must say only the kids finished their food. There is a wide selection of beers and the ones we tried are good. The Pork Hock and the schnitzels were the favourites. Personally, I was too impressed with the quantity but halfway in eating, I just could not take it anymore, not sure if I just got bored with the taste or too full or maybe both. Generally, it was a lovely family dining experience therefore will still come back đ

Oh man!!! This is the second time I have visited here and I totally forgot how big their portions are!
If you ever want to have some protein over load at a bargain this would be one of those places! As well as their extensive range of German beer at 1L servings, you can have octoberfest any day of the year!
We ordered the pork hock and 2 piece chicken schnitzel with mushroom sauce and a litre of beer to share.
TOO much! Way too much! I think we could have done with one meal! Flavour was nice but nothing special, it got a bit blend after a few bites, but goes well with beer!
Service 4/5, the place was packed but she still manage to serve us and the food came surprisingly fast when she told me it was going to be a long wait.
Environment 2.5/5, cozy but a bit cramp! Dont even need to try to touch the person next table to me. Would not recommend for intimate night out.
Instragram worthy 2.5/5, interesting deco with a lot of German style ornaments and beer brand tags. Guess u can like it or hate it...
Very pricey place. Not too bad overall. The sausages are good, but I felt like their sauerkraut was lacking. Their goulashuppe was very good to me, but not really for my partner. Nice for a different dining experience
The waitress who took our order either forgot to put the order through or something went wrong so we had to wait ~50mins for our 2 mains. They did apologise repeatedly and explained what happened promptly and gave us free garlic bread so we had something to munch on while we waited. Great atmosphere and huge portions especially the pork hock. Would love to visit again when we feel like german food.
The ribs and chicken schnitzel were top class and very large portions. To much to finish in one sitting ( go hungry ).
The ambiance was interesting and entertaining to stare at the decor.

As a german myself I loved the food! The portions are massive and it definitely stuffs you! We went at a pretty busy time of the day so we had to wait a while for our food but it was alright! The staff is very nice and they stick to the theme of the traditional Bavarian German style!
Visited a couple of weeks ago and everything was good, the staff were great , super friendly and keen to impress but what didn't impress was $24 for 2 sausages minimal sauce and a portion of chips . That was hard to swallow!, but it did taste good and my partners meal was very impressive and left me with a serious case of food envy . Can't wait to go back and try everything on the menu but after my first visit I loved the staff , the decor and the atmosphere it had a very happy, genuine family feeling to it and reminded me of my trips to Germany . But I'd seriously look at adjusting the price on the currywurst or adding more to it to actually make it worth buying . Will adjust rating over more visits but for now based on what I had taking in to account the awesome beer it's a 3.5.

We were welcomed once we entered and shown to our tables. The waitress was quite helpful when we were ordering drinks. They have 1L vessels of beer, some of which you con't get anywhere else.
Once everyone showed up we ordered without much waiting or fuss. Most of us ordered schnitzel, but only a few dared to get two pieces. The schnitzel comes in beef, chicken or pork and they also have other items like the pork hock.
Food came around the same time and it was delicious. The schnitzel is quite big and crispy and tasty.

Service is great, portions are super big and the flavor is pretty pretty good :), the selection of German beers is ample and the decor is amusingly welcoming, it felt like Schorndorf again, you must try the pork Schnitzels with 2 pieces of meat and potato salad sauerkraut, we had meatballs and meat loaf as well, definitely we will come back
Oh boy! Been there few weeks ago with my partner. We ordered 2 pcs schnitzel which was really big portion and we shared. Barely can finish all the food but I managed to fill up my tummy... And I ordered chocolate mousse for dessert, it was yummy too. Rich and creamy...
And the front house lady spook nice and friendly. Love this place.
Great traditional German restaurant serving traditional German food. Decorated with various pieces of vintage German memorabilia (perhaps a bit overdone). Food was good, with traditional and contemporary options.
we were a group of 4 who went there last night. Â Loved the ambiance, Â loved the section of German beers, Â loved the food ; I had the pork belly which was fabulous; others all had various schnitzels and all declared them to be great- Â large portions!! Â Only downside was the time taken to come to get our drinks order. Not sure if this was a one-off or if its the way they do it but 20 minutes is far too long to wait to take your order for a drink. Â Otherwise I loved it. Recommended for small casual groups and families.

Wheelchair access is problematic both because of the size of the step up into the restaurant and the fact that you often need to get other dinners to move to make way because the tables are crowded in pretty close. Â However, outside seating is available.
We went for an early dinner and came back later for dessert after a walk along the waterfront. Â Noisy for dinner, but good noise, all happy chatter. Â Quieter later in the evening.
Between the four of us we had the Gulaschsuppe, the JÀgerschnitzel, the venison medallions, and the pork medallions.  The schnitzel (huge!) was deemed merely "okay", not significantly better than what we'd make at home, but the rest of us loved our meals.  My soup was technically an entrée but was perfectly adequate for a whole meal--very hearty with large chunks of very tender beef plus bread on the side.  I'd definitely get it again!  My guests were happy too.
For dessert, the Apfelstrudel rated highly and the crÚme brûlée less so (tasted kind of cheesy, apparently) but it all disappeared.  The Heisse Liebe (brandy-marinated berries with ice cream and cream) was simple and wonderful. I had kinda hoped to see SchwarzwÀlder Kirshtorte on the dessert menu, but no.  Maybe next time?

Always wanted to try this place so here I am on Thursday 24 November sipping on a nice cold German SchĆfferhofer Hefeweizen ($11.00 for 500ml) - German Weizmann Bier (wheat beer). Heard the hock is good here but is huge so am going to try the pork sausages (NƱrnberger) ($18 entrĂ©e size). Always looks busy when I have passed with a real Geman feel. Clean & tidy. They did want to charge me the main price on leaving, but I had only ordered the entrĂ©e.
Great atmosphere good food as you expect from the menu but a wonderful surprise tonight was the outstanding child friendly staff
After dinner where they dealt with our table of 18 with no problem our children went outside to the footpath as they were bored
The waitress noticed that and started an impromptu egg and spoon race series that went on for an hour followed by plastic gold medals for all the winners (everyone's a winner!)
All this while we continued to complete an adults dinner
Everyone has gone home happy and they should be congratulated on the effort with service

Good atmosphere and service. We got the beef schnitzel and it was delicious! The beer was very good as well. Good quality for an affordable price! Definitely returning.
It's my first time to come and dine in this restaurant. But I've heard things about their schnitzel. :) And so tonight I did give it a try.
Der metz, I tried to look up what it is in Deutsch and 2 things came up. First is, Metz a town in France or second is Metzger which means the butcher. I am leaning towards more to the latter.
The place gives off a very genuine Deutsch vibe, at least for me personally. Haha. The place has heaps of Deutsch knick knacks around the restaurant.
We order a jÀgerschnitzel (beef) and champignonschnitzel (chicken). The portions were humongous. We also ordered krombacher Pilsen and edelweiss beers.
It's a bit pricey and I hope they could have wider choices for the side. But I also love how they have quite a few choices of Deutsch bier. #lecker

This place is amazing! Little slice of German heaven!
The atmosphere was warm and welcoming, everyone speaks German in there. Girls dressed up in traditional costume and nice German folk music playing at the background. The walls are decorated with all the beer jags, mugs flags and things you would find in German markets.
The food was absolutely amazing! We ordered the two pieces chicken schnitzel which was massive. The chicken was nicely crumbed and soft at the middle. We also order the German platter which had a bit of everything on it! The highlight of that platter had to be the roasted pork! It's melt in your mouth with delicious cracklings.
The beer came in a 1 litre jag and went down very well with the meal!! Don't leave without trying their mulled wine, it's soooo yummy!!
All the waiting staffs were really friendly and attentive. They were very helpful and looked after us very well!!
Can't wait to come back to try more of their dishes.

We have been here a number of times and never been disappointed. No it's not going to win any top awards and yes sometimes when it is very busy service can be a bit slow but if you want a good basic schnitzel or hock then this is the place to go.
I have been here for dinner a couple of times and the food is always top notch. Always get the extra piece of schnitzel for $4! Make sure you book as it can get very busy!
I had dinner last night with a group of 11 friends at Der Metz and it was a great experience.
The place looks very authentic, well furnished and decorated and it makes you feel on a vacation or at least somewhere else.
Service was fantastic, very efficient and polite, and on point at all times. Our waitresses were very patient and explained the menu to us when we had questions.
The food had an excellent timing and it was delicious. The servings are generous and the meats are very tender and moist.
Silly thing that I loved, in the counter there's a few baskets full of complementary lollies for children or not so much and they all look delicious.
Totally recommended to groups of friends, families or couples.

First time here and wow the food was delicious, tasty and very authentic. Dishes are large so come hungry and beer comes in 1 litre steins. and The staff was attentive and atmosphere awesome. It was a busy night so glad we booked but service was still great even though we were a small table.
Lovely evening out! fabulously big portions and good service. Very authentic we all German beer in steins, and all of the mains were very yummy. German music playing and the staff all spoke it (our German friend was with us) really nice to be able to try something different from the norm. I had the venison that was nice, but left me wishing o had the pork hock (which I helped a friend eat ) The only let down was the creme brûlée which was very runny.
We come here every couple months and I love this place!! and my boyfriend does too! it's his favourite place because it's the only place where the meals are so big that he's my hungry afterwards! good value for money and the food is enjoyable!
When you're looking for quantity (but still want a touch of quality), this is your place.Â
Order the pork hock for half the price of a fine dining restaurant, and you'll receive a whole pork roast that 2 people will struggle to finish. Same goes for the schnitzel. You'll be having schnitzel sandwiches for the rest of the week if you're smart enough to ask for a doggy bag.
So authentically German that the waitresses, dressed in traditional attire and wandering around a dining room filled with German paraphernalia, speak with just enough accent to make you believe you're at Oktoberfest without confusing your order.Â

Hubby (German) and I enjoyed a very authentic German schnitzel on Saturday night. Although the restaurant was full the service and meals were still speedy and tasty.
Trying to find German cuizine in Auckland is harder than trying to find a needle in a haystack. I would love to say we stumbled upon this great restaurant by accident but we actually were in search for a German restaurant with authentic cuizine to visit for our anniversary. Boy am I happy we found this place. The food is great and the portion sizes are enormous. You definitely get the most bang for your buck here and then some. I recommend the pork hock and the Jagerschnitzel and you definitely can't go home without trying a schnapps or two. I love this place and it is one of my favourites when I want to enjoy a hearty good meal :) A+++
Love the chicken schnitzel with extra mushroom and pepper sauce. I know this is more of a sit down, enjoy the ambience and have a nice German beer kind of place. Personally for me and the mrs this is an ideal takeaway night food along spatzel, pepper sauce and mushroom sauce.
Brought my family here last night for our Sunday dinner, and were pleasantly surprised at how nice it was. The restaurant was a bit on the quiet side, but the food definitely isn't. Each dish is very generously portioned and in good German fare, full of quality meat. The cuts are excellent - of note are the cuts on the German Platter and the amazingly delicious Pork Hock. Beers are somewhat disappointing however, a tad overpriced as you'd expect more from German beers. Service is attentive and knowledgeable, but the ambience of the restaurant could be improved. But as my ratings are generally food quality oriented, a very well deserved 3.5 from me.
Went here for a friends birthday dinner. We ordered the Paprika schnitzel, 1 piece would be ideal and 2 makes for a good lunch the next day, huge quantities, the beer and desert was nice too, but the star was the mulled wine they had for winter, definitely recommend this place
This restaurant manages to capture the feel and the taste of Germany. Â The food is hearty and delicious. Â The portion sizes are massive which is a relief in a trendy area!
The cost is what you'd expect for an Auckland restaurant. Â Mostly under $30 per person if you don't drink anything. Â Although being a German restaurant you'd be mad not to have a bier with dinner.
Came here with a large group for lunch yesterday. I've been to this restaurant many times for dinner, so it was quite a different vibe going during the day. Dinner service is always very busy, tables are full and it's buzzing with frenetic energy.  Because it's super busy, it can take time for meals to come out.  However, the lunch service was really, really relaxed and our meals came out pretty quick. Previous times I've had the Jagerschnitzel which I would recommend, however for lunch yesterday I had the calamari which was just okay. I would recommend schnitzel or the pork hock for meals if you're looking for something really tasty. Thanks for the lunch, we all enjoyed it.
Really great place to try some authentic German food (my German friend agrees). I love their pork schnitzel - great portions!!!! And one of the only few times I like to eat pork - pork medallions are really really good. Their spatzle is also yummy for vegetarians.
Despite the slight long wait for the tables and food, it was well worth the wait because the food were delicious but a bit too much towards proportion size, which I suppose gets more bang for your buck. Overall a very good experience. Will be coming back again :)
if you love Schnitzel then you need to go to Der Metz, recommend you start with the smaller ones first, and build up to the full size ones
I went with two others on a Saturday night, when the restaurant was about two thirds full. There were only two front of house staff (both German, and working hard) when three were needed, imo (it took several minutes after our arrival for our presence to be recognised). The staff were pleasant but clearly working under pressure, and a couple of errors occurred in fulfilling the orders. This review is in no way intended as negative comment about those people, rather about a management decision. I realise of course that staff wages are a major cost to a business, but I consider the balance here was lacking - and prevented me from rating the restaurant as 5 star.
The food was excellent both in quality and quantity, and the beer I ordered was in good condition and satisfying. Pricing was reasonable, so the food is very good value for money.
Notwithstanding the comments in the first paragraph, anything less than 4 stars would be unfair in my book.
We went with a group of 20 people for my birthday last month. The food portion sizes were amazing, so much so that you could easily share one portion between two people. Most people in our group took some home for lunch the next day.
The music wasn't German unfortunately which would have helped with the atmosphere if it had been but the service was fantastic and we all had a very enjoyable time.
It's the third time I have been to this restaurant and I would definitely recommend it for larger groups as the food and service were really good.
Love, Love, Love this place. Easy to find, food is fantabulous (and plentiful) so go there hungry. Service was fast and friendly. Oh and did I mention the food OMG!! Definately will be going back for more G

Oh, Der Metz...
The food is pretty great most of the time.
The service can be a bit, well, German at times; waitstaff in general seem to come from The Teutonic Regions of the World, which can add a gruff crispness perhaps unfamiliar to some Kiwi diners. And sometimes they seem understaffed. Oh, let's face it, the service could be better, but I put up with it for:
GIGANTIC schnitzel (order the extra piece!)
a varied and generally fantastic menu
lots and lots of BIER! (Schneider Weisse, bitte!)
the best decor ever--it's like someone staggered in and projectile vomited Bavaria all over everything--King Ludwig II's palace stares at you from every surface available, adverts for Wieselburger literally festoon the dining areas... You want antlers? Cuckoo clocks? Ghastly oompa-techno schlager on the PA system? Your Teutonokitsch needs will be met. You want schnapps with that? OF COURSE YOU DO. Sometimes they even make the poor girls wear dirndls!
I also know actual German people who adore the place. :) Your mileage may vary; I go regularly and will continue to do so. Very grateful to have this right in Kohimarama!
Our group of hungry friends is about to embark on our second "Great Schnitzel Challenge" and I can't wait. The first time was absolutely awesome! Saying the meals are generous is an understatement, they are huge! The men got on to the challenge of eating ALL of their massive schnitzel while us ladies did our best to get through half! I'd definitely recommend skipping breakfast and lunch before going to dinner here. Great atmosphere, awesome place to dine...can't wait for our return visit in 2 weeks time!
Our family (2 adult daughters) went there last night. When inquiring about seating availability, staff member seemed rather brusque. Once seated, we felt that we were being ignored and after 20 minutes, we had to signal for a wait staff's attention. To be fair, all the staff appeared to be very busy; but we felt our presence should have been acknowledged, even to say: "Will be over, to see you, shortly". Or similar.
After we got the attention, there was an improvement in our darkening mood: drinks that we ordered came in a reasonable time as with our mains. Amazing, what a friendly smile from the waitress can do, to lighten the mood.
The portions were more than generous, the French fries and mashed potato were all good. The actual taste was OK-plus. Value for money: 8.5/10

Good atmosphere and I've always found the wait staff to be very friendly.
Admittedly I have never been to Germany so can't comment on the authenticity of the food, but what I can tell you is it's delicious and comes in enormous portions. If you're hungry I recommend the Wienerschnitzel, and if you're thirsty a huge jug of their German tap beer goes down well.
People have their right to an opinion, but given the price and the portions of food I can't really see why anyone would want to complain about this place. Real bang for your buck.
Great food, enormous meals and fantastic range of German beer. Unfortunately they had only 2 waiting staff for a full restaurant with multiple large groups, so we (group of 2) were pretty much ignored, so had to continually remind them of our existence!
Very authentic German kitchen I would say. If you are from Germany, and you miss good sausages and Schnitzel, you will be happy here. Giant very tasty meals!

We had a table of 8 - which is a bit squishy in there but added to the atmosphere! We went with very high expectations (we called it the Great Schnitzel Adventure) and they were met. Lovely, knowledgable staff, the meals were HUGE, and delicious. Great value for money (although my cordon bleu was a bit light on the cheese!). Fantastic, fun, genuinely retro restaurant - worth the trip there from anywhere in Auckland!
Absolutely brilliant restaurant. It has become a favourite with us and we take all of our visitors from out of town as well.. can't recommend it highly enough. You will never get through entree, main and desert and only a brave person will try two of the three!
Der Metz is a fantastic place for dinner we go there often.
They have opened an Italian Restaurant next door which we have now been to 3 time with 6 then 5 then 8 other people.
It was horrible each time.
Last time we got there at 7.20pm and didn't get our meals until 9.30pm.
We nearly walked out.
The other times the meals were not up to scratch.
It's a shame because they have a great spot.
So this is a total of 19 people who want be going back. Plus word of mouth.
With so few German restaurants in Auckland, this is a gem. They offer authentic German food which is really hearty and tasty. I can vouch for the Nurnberger sausages and knoedls! There's also a great range of German beers and wines and real German waitresses.
We ended up here on mothers day as Cafe on Kohi overflowing. We had no expectations and so were pleasantly surprised at the standard of the food versus the cost. All our dishes were between $14 and $18 with coffee included. Service was efficient and friendly and they catered well to our toddler and friend's young baby warmly and without fuss. Dishes going out to other tables looked great and I would definitely have had one of their tall beers if I wasn't pregnant! I loved the decor despite it being a little on the kitch side - sometimes you can forgo sophistication for charm and good value. Would return.

We had a dinner with friends as they wanna try german food. The restaurant located around mission bay, but not along side the beach, so it's easy to park. The decoration of it transfer you to munich , you can find lots of symble of Bavaria. So when you talk about Bavaria, you should talk about the beer !! The big Bavaria beer on draft just reminded me the days in Munich Oktoberfest , make sure you try when you have dinner.
About the service, I need to say the service stuff are not very helpful, smileless, and we wanna her to recommend something sepcial to us, she did not really happy to serve people, or maybe German are always serious ;D, please improve your service as other parts of the restaurant are very good. About the food the plate is very big ,you can easily share the plate if you are two girls, it's very similar to chinese northern food, and all the dishes serve with salad.
I like the sauerkrut it's typical northern chinese food, very sour and taste, you can also find in the menu in the geman food. The grilled chicken called Chicken Zuricher $22, very tender and soft , seasoned with cream mushroom sauce, you should try. And the porter house steak $27, the sirloin steak is very juicy and tender. The pork hock $28 is typically german style haha, it's very hard, I like soft ,but it's a german restaurant, be serious ;D
WIENER SCHNITZEL (aka Pork SCHNITZEL) & PORK HOCK - Recommended dishes here.
The Pork Schnitzel portions are amazing and absolutely delicious. Golden crunchy on the outside and has the perfect width on the inside. I personally loved the serving with mashed potato and with gravy. As the other reviews say, always get the double size and take the left overs home! I have tried the Beef Schnitzel aswell, which was delicious too, but personally loved the pork one more.
The Pork Hock is a dish that surprises. Visually it is served with a knife in the middle. I would say for portion wise, this would serve two adults with this one dish alone. Served with some pasta like noodles on the side and some sauerkraut.
The atmosphere is what makes this place amazing - colourful and makes you feel like you have travelled to the other side of the world.
Service was friendly and great. The wait time for the food was on the longer end, but it is worth it for the quality of food.
Will be back again!

Massive portion sizes (I reckon I would have struggled to get through the kids meal) - get the double schnitzel for a challenge. Hand cut fries, the salad was delicious, and the beer comes in appropriately sized vessels (ie: 1 liter).

Good food, big portions, great atmosphere.
We had a good time there and enjoyed our meals. The service was a little slow but understandably due to several large bookings on the night. We were a table of 10 and there was another table of at least 20 with us all ordering pretty much at the same time. There were also lots of others in the restaurant on top of that with both sides of the restaurant full. Friendly staff great night out.
The pork hock and its egg noodles are so delicious, must try! The chicken schnitzel is tender also a good choice.
Food is great, the jĂ€gerschnitzel was delicious. Staff are very friendly. There are tables outside near heaters, which is a dog friendly area and more quiet than inside the restaurant. Service is not fast, so it isnât a place for a quick meal. Would definitely come back for more schnitzel.

We ordered pork hock and beef with caramelised onions. The beef did not taste special, but I loved the sauce and mashed potato. The pork hock was very tasty. The crackling was so crispy and savoury. The meat was very tender and juicy. We will defintely go back to have pork hock again. However, we had to wait for more than 35-40minutes until the dishes were served. It was a bit boring to wait for that long.

Excellent place. The meals are well portioned if you love a good large meal. ya gota try a wheat beer they are the best.
The food is very good but the service was pretty damn bad. We were the first people and the restaurant was empty but we got the bread after we finished the food!! There was a young guy there who seemed very confused, it could be his first day. The lady who helped us although there was a delay but she had a nice smile and very good attitude.
On our pursuit to slowly tick off every Iconic Eat in Auckland, we came across Der Metz.
We ordered the Schnitzel and the pork platter and both dishes were incredible. The gravy they served with the pork was insane and I was regretting not getting a side order of just gravy.
All in all 10/10
Der Mets never disappoints with their range of great beers as well their epic menu. My group of 7 had 4 different beers each, JĂ€germeister shots, individual selected meals and a pork hock to share. Safe to say we were well hungover the next day but not hungry. We had great banter from the staff also 10/10 experience!
Der Metz is a great local restaurant in Kohimarama everyone loves. It is great for couples, families, and groups. The portions are big and food is good quality. Great place to sit back, relax and enjoy your meal.
One of my favorite German restaurants here in Auckland. Their German Radler is a must must must have.đ»đș Get that in their huge beer jug and you can just be lost in it forever. They serve bloody huge portions of mains and the price is also affordable for the quantity that is provided. My friends and, I ordered the Paprika Schnitzel, Catch of the day and Medallions of Venison as seen in the pictures below. Man, we were struggling to finish them all in one go but had to do a take away after and eat it at home. The food remained scrumptious. Great environment, music and service. Also loved the ambiance. Will definitely go there again when time permits. đđ
Greattt authentic German restaurant. If you want a comfy and home type cooked meal then this is a perfect place to eat! Best selection of German brews and massive proportions of food. Made me feel like i was back experiencing a bit of Germany.
Been coming to this place for about 15 years now and they consistently deliver quality every time. The schnitzels are all very good but they also do a pretty great Fred Flintsone style pork hock and goulash.
Reservations are recommended because it always is busy.
Wow what an experience! This took me to home cooked food from Austria. We got the Deutsch platter, pork hock and pork schnitzel along with a krombacher beer or two. Very generous portions. Friendly and helpful staff.
A great atmosphere with amazing quality of food and beers. You get SO much for what you pay for. Make sure you have a massive appetite that will leave you stuffed but somehow, wanting to come back for more. I'm going to be bringing my family and friends here for sure.
