Looking for a place to go in the weekend? You can't go wrong with picking any place on Dom road. This road is an institution. Just a great concentration of places that'll satisfy your foodie cravings.

Stopped by Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle House on a cold Friday evening and boy did it warm me up. All the dishes were great! Notable mentions go to the eggplant in spicy garlic sauce, cumin lamb and the skewers. Service can be a touch slow but it's excused with the quality of food!

There's nothing more comforting than a steaming bowl of handmade noodles and this place has em! Located on the lively Dominion Road in abundance of restaurants specialising in the asian cuisine - my visit here was like coming home to a warm hearty meal. The freshness of the ingredients & sophisticated flavours slowly erased the ill memory of my day with every mouthful of noodles I consumed. I can't fault these guys at all, they ticked every box. 5☆

Visited this outlet restaurant, well known for their hand made noodles. Located on a corner of the busy Dominion Road.

The restaurant is quite dirty and crowded. But I do acknowledge the flavoring of their food and noodles.

The Xinjiang Lamb Fried Noodles has stretchy noodles but the cooking was quite imprudent, some of the noodles were still raw because they were sticking against each other. Plus they added way too much cornstarch to the dish.
The cold dish - beef tripe was quite flavorful and tasty.

The food were in great portions, but the serving was slightly slow.

Got the Kung fu braised lamb noodles, Dan Dan noodles with mince on top and the lamb kebabs! The braised lamb noodles had a mild flavored broth, with very long rubbery noodles which took a lot of chewing. However the Dan Dan noodles were very tasty and had spicy sauce at the bottom which mixed nicely. The skewers with cumin were also yummy.

I pretty much get the same thing everyyy time I come here. First off, I’m there for the hand pulled noodles. Handpulled noodles are my faveee, I just LOVE the chewy texture, and Shaolin never disappoints. I also HAVE to get the spring onion pancake (葱油饼) as a side each time, it’s one of my favourite Chinese food. It’s called spring onion pizza on their menu and doesn’t actually look flat like the photo and like how other places do their spring onion pancakes. Shaolin does them exactly the way I like it - flakey, crispy and flavourful. Please try it if you haven’t! And last but not least, Shaolin is one of my top cheap eats in Auckland. Each bowl of noodle here (small size) was only $11.90. All large size noodles are only a $1 more!

Another unassuming dumpling spot on Dom road yet Shaolin Kung Fu Noodles home to hands down the tastiest vegetarian dumplings I’ve had in Auckland. It’s not easy to find good vegetarian dumplings, but the egg and chive pan fried dumplings are just packed with flavour, the egg filling gives a great texture and the pan-fried finish just completes these little parcels of perfection. Would highly recommend!

Good chinese food. One of the few halal chinese outlets in the city.
Quantity is quite generous. It's authentic Chinese, so you need to be expert in ordering the chinese food.
Restauraunt gets too busy after 7:30PM but staff is quick and helpful so arrange table quickly.
Service is quick and timely.

Came here because I was craving Big Plate Chicken. We also got Beef with Spring Onion and Lamb Soup

- Big Plate Chicken (7/10) Comes in 2 sizes, S and L...we got the Small but it was massive! Almost didn’t have space for anything else on the table jeez. Flavour-wise it could have been a bit more punchier, and they weren’t as generous with the chicken, they were rather small and bony pieces. The noodles were very good though; chewy and thick just the way it should be!

- Beef and Spring Onion (8/10) more or less exactly what it’s named. Could have been more pepper added to it to elevate the flavours a bit, but portions were good and beef were cooked tenderly and well.

- Lamb Soup (10/10) for those brave enough to eat chopped up sheep organs, try this! It’s insanely aromatic, flavoursome and VERY generous with the organs!

Came here with friends to satisfy those noodles cravings, I had the Dan Dan noodles and pan fried lamb and chive dumplings which were shared. The staff here are really friendly and attentive in comparison to the other busy restaurants on Dominon Rd. My noodles were really nice and the pork topping was fried nicely and packed with flavour, it would’ve been nice if there was more chilli sauce at the bottom of the bowl to mix into the noodles. Left really full and satisfied, I’ll be back for more.

I grew up eating and living this type of noodle back home so was thrilled to see that it has been brought over to NZ when these guys first opened, it's not as good as back home but it is getting pretty damn close.

Classic dish, the lamb thick noodles, the broth is so fragrant, it's been on the boil for hours and you can really see it coming through in the colour. The noodles are top notch, hand pulled, thick, chewy, there is nothing I do not love about these noodles here, you can put them in anything and they will be delicious.

Most of the variations here use the same type of noodles so you can expect a level of consistency, these guys also do all sorts of small side dishes which I strongly recommend trying out, they are all the same things we have back home in China, kind of like peasant food, but so delicious.

Only mark down for this place is that their prices were very reasonable, but have gotten more expensive over the years, I think for what it is, it could be cheaper.

Came here on a Tuesday night, and it was pretty busy . Really good service, gave us water straight away and were very attentive. So much to choose from, its awesome! We ordered the lamb noodles, spring onion pizza and pan fried vege dumplings. The pizza did not look like a regular pizza so we were quite surprised, but it was actually one of the best pizzas that we've ever had!! The noodles were very filling and yummy. The dumplings were soooo good, I couldn't finish them but took them home with me as they were too good to waste. The ambiance isn't the greatest, as it is quite outdated and stuffy.

Overall, very good price for the amount of food we got and really good, fast service. Definitely recommend coming, and we will back again to try more from the menu!

One of the few places in Auckland to get halal chinese food. Portions are served big, big on flavours too! The beef and lamb noodle dishes are great as usual. Dumplings are good too. What we found outstanding were the sweet and sour chicken and seasoned soft bone chicken. Each and every piece of chicken had the soft bone in it! Soft bone chicken is a child hood favourite of mine so I am particularly partial to it. Also the staff are very pleasant and accommodating. Great place! Farha Deen

Came here and ordered take out- very quick and friendly service yet not the nicest looking place if you are looking to dine in somewhere fancy. Nonetheless, Ordered the seasoned stir-fried squid and the Lamb fried noodles and both dishes were packed with flavour. There are a number of seafood options too which I really liked. The only downfall would be the hefty pricing-$28 for the squid alone was very expensive to me especially with the portion size that we had received. Would definitely come back and try something cheaper on the menu

Don't let the homemade noodles distract you, the STEAMED dumplings are great here. I would dare say better than Barilla.

Food is really tasty - not just salt msg and oil, there's some real depth to the flavour.

Big portions, small prices, average looking place.

I've been here around 5 times and service has always been quite bad.

You get the idea: not a place for a first date, great for groups so you can try the many options there are.

First time visiting this place! Fell in love with their dining tables I must say! Full of colorful characters 😍 But that was just the beginning of the eventful journey that night, spice was still on the way! Literallly...

We ordered:

Number 7 kung fu spicy noodles
Number 74 Hot and spicy fried rice
Spring onion pizza

In the kitchen we could see the chef making the noodles from scratch so that was defs one we were excited to try! The spicy noodles actually had 2 types of noodles and noodles made of tofu...and the noodles sure had a kick to them! 💥🔥

Definitely will be coming back again! 😋 8/10

Best cleaver cut noodles in town - hand made. I can't handle too much spice so I had won ton and asked for the cleaver cut noodles. Mrs had spicy beef cleaver cut noodles. Beef melt in mouth and not too much star anise. Was not too spicy just right. 🌶️😁Our second time back. A quick note that there is NO Pork 🐽 at this restaurant!

After reading about the popularity of full body cringe Lit "food" reviews among the gram community, I have decided to dust off my fingerless foodreview gloves, and come out of my review retirement and give my favourite restaurant SHAOLIN NOODLES a review.

To be frank - having been AFK for more than a year from Zomato, I am a bit shocked to see shaolin is sitting on a 3.9. This is really an amazing establishment serving very authentic and delicious Xinjiang/Uyghur cuisine, with a sizable menu offering patrons many many options. You'll find that the restaurant has not tried to dumb down the menu, and have stayed true to the cuisine - which has been good - as you'll see going to this place  that its a melting pot of curious, culturally accepting, open minded, diverse group of people wanting to know what this type of Chinese food is about.

I've been coming here for dinner regularly for the past 2-3 years, and the usual xinjiang/Uyghur-style Laghman (Hand pulled noodle) cannot be missed, try it with any of the soups - they are all very good. There is something about the texture and bite of freshly made noodles that is so satisfying & delicious, that it is beyond describable with my limited english vocabulary - so can only resort to profanities and say it's "fking lit"  (sorry, if i made you vomit)

The dumplings are also made with the same fresh noodle dough, so the texture is again very good - and are fried on a pan and served upside down with the residual flour fried. quite unique, and i think reflects the pragmatic style of cooking that characterises xinjiang cuisine and many of the popular dishes (see Dapanji)

Somewhere in a parallel universe - Bourdain is still alive and is thoroughly enjoying  a large bowl of lamb noodles here for 'parts unknown' with Jacinda.

I loved their cleaver sliced beef noodles! One thing that I still struggle in Chinese restaurants is that there are too many options to choose! I chose the beef noodles just because it was written on the blackboard as chefs recommendation 😂 but it didn’t disappoint me at all!

Beef was very tender (must have cooked slowly for hours) and the soup was full of flavours. It wasn’t spicy at all. My friend ordered fried noodles and the noodles were green in colour (celery noodles) but they just tasted like normal ones. The noodles were not bad also and in huge serving size!

I asked the waitress the difference between large and small size of noodles and turns out it’s just doubling the noodle amount. Although I’m a big eater, I only ordered small size because the noodles itself were very filling.

Food: 5/5
Service: 3/5
Overall: 5/5

The food here has some true nuggets of gold in the mix - if you get the right thing.

The first time I came here I ordered a dish with no flavour (cleavered noo dles with beef), and would've rated it a 3 or less. However, I was convinced to return by a friend and every dish since then has been up there with the best in Auckland. The dan dan noodles, the meilan noodles, etc are all absolutely fantastic.

The atmosphere leaves a little to be desired with a very unusual seating arrangement upstairs. I prefer this place for takeaway myself, for these reasons. However if you are a party of 2 it is a lot better.

Chinese Restaurant similar to gogomusic

They have most menu you'd find at a normal chinese restaurant and same menu from gogo music aswell.

Their bbq sticks were pretty average, way too much Kumin spice i rekon.
Chicken dish were decent quality but their sauce wasn't the best.
However their deep fried eggplant in some sauce was just the killer dish.

Defs going back for those eggplants

Came here for dinner and ordered the Kung Fu Beef Noodles and friend ordered the DanDan Noodles! Food was served within five minutes, which was insanely quick! The beef was thinly sliced, nuce and tender. The noodles were so thick and had a rough texture, but it was nice. The noodles went well with the broth too! There were also some fungi, strips of tofu skin and vermicelli. A pretty cool place to dine if you're looking for cheap eats.

The food is delicious!! I can't say this enough, everything was so moreish, packed with flavor and portions were huge.
We ordered the chicken, celery and mushroom pan fried dumplings, eggplant in spicy garlic sauce, hot and spicy fried rice and the Xinjiang fried lamb noodles. I've never tasted anything like the eggplant dish - it was spicy, sweet, salty and the eggplant was so tender. We also used the dumplings to mop up the sauce - yuuuuuuum.
Hands down the best fried rice I've ever had, it is spicy but not overwhelming and full of ingredients.
The lamb fried noodles is the dish that we continue to come back for. 10/10. I've never had a dish like it and I'll never forget it. Absolutely fantastic food.
The service is pretty scarce but the food came out quickly. Atmosphere is what you would expect, casual, busy little restaurant with funky cartoon tables. Really liked the green tea they served aswell!

Saw this on an urban list to try. We walked past and there were no tables available until a couple had just finished so we quickly grabbed their table. It's not a big place but very busy. We ordered lamb and chicken kebabs. The lamb kebabs were really tasty and I could've ordered more but we ended up trying the chicken kebabs instead. The chicken kebabs were alright but just seemed to be overpowered by cumin spice. We also ordered stir fry lamb noodles and chicken with chilli. The noodles were delicious and house made so even better and the chilli chicken was nice with a good little heat of chilli and peanuts. The staff were good and friendly. The serves are big so value for money is certainly on point. Will definitely try again and try some other dihes

Ambience: its a small chinese place, but its clean and neat. It does have other seats upstairs for bigger groups. The thought of our hand pulled noodles would be made inside the restaurant does gives us excitement. You could hear the chef doing it.

Staff: the staff did entertain us well.

Our group had Beef noodles, seafood noodles and beef broccoli.
Flavor wise, it was wonderful.
The noodles are so good and felt fresh. Its thick and chewy. We loved it.
The flavor of the soup is nice. Its not bland. Its flavourful
The beef with broccoli is super. But i would be bias with the fact it tasted gingery, which was a little off for me because i dont like ginger. But anyone who doesnt have a problem with a hint of ginger would find it tasty.

Price: A GREAT VALUE FOR MONEY
serving size: Very GENEROUS.

Service: 4/5 the staff arent very accommodating. If you are used to being asked how you were or what you needed, youd be upset.
However, I personally dont mind as long as the food is wonderful, and comes fast.

I would recommend this chinese restaurant to my friends. It is worth its rating.

We came here last night in a group of 5 at around 6:30 and were lucky enough to get a table upstairs straight away. The service was perfectly fine and what I'd expect for Dominion Rd. I didn't notice that it was particularly dirty either as I've seen in some of the other reviews, but we were upstairs which felt a lot nicer. We ordered the kung Pao spicy beef noodles, lamb skewers, lamb dumplings and the cleave noodles. One of our dishes got forgotten, which was resolved without too much hassle. The noodles themselves were delicious and clearly hand-pulled, and the meat/broth of the spicy beef noodles was pretty good. Not my favourite spot on Dominion Rd, but definitely worth a visit

Always come to this restaurant every Saturday mostly!! It is nice to have a reasonably priced lunch in Chinatown, aka Dominion Road. I always get their main dishes which is their hand pulled noodles. I like their braised lamb or beef noodles in a large to fill me up. The settings isn't always the best because it is always busy! The food is great and you can always park where the old warehouse is so that's a bonus! When it is full it takes around twenty minutes to get my noodles.

When you visit a place two Saturdays in a row, you know it's good!

Having heard some good things about Shaolin, we decided to try it ourselves. It's a typical dominion road Chinese place, cheap, very basic but delicious food. If you enter and see all the tables full do not worry, there's plenty of space upstairs.

They don't serve pork but MANY lamb dishes. On the first visit we had the lamb kebabs. That's a must-order dish. DO NOT DO NOT miss this dish. Skewers of lamb perfectly cooked and with plenty of spices and the lamb flavour really shines through.

A few other dishes we tried-chicken kung fu noodles, braised lamb Kung fu noodles. Both came in huge bowls of flavourful broth and handmade noodles. For $12.50 it's totally worth it and we struggled to finish even on an empty stomach. The lamb one had spicy broth and perfectly cooked lamb. Chicken broth was not spicy but oh so flavourful.

Next time we had the lamb kebabs (there's no skipping this one) the eggplant in spicy garlic sauce. Oh so good! Garlicy, sweet and spicy and perfectly cooked eggplant pieces. The crispy beef with chilli was good as well. Plenty of beef, perfectly fried. Happy with both dishes.

I'm going to be a regular here, for the kebabs of course but also to try other things on their menu. Everything looks soooo good!

Heard and read great things about this place so had to check it out and it was 100% worth it. I normally go to Barilla or New Flavour but will definitely add Kung Fu place to the list now! The lamb skewers were tender and highly flavoursome so recommend. Kung Pao chicken serving was huge, but sadly not the best I've had. Chicken dumplings in spicy sauce were tender but not as hot and spicy as I would have liked but still amazing! Can't wait to go back and try more of the menu out and their famous noodles :)

I dont go shaolin kung fu noodles very often, although every-time i go there i always enjoy the food. I love the chewy noodles, the rich broth and the tasty skewers.

Their dishes are reasonably priced, and the portions are pretty substantial. Its a cheap and cheerful sort of place. The staffs are generally pretty friendly, and the meal generally comes out fairly quickly. Overall it's not a bad place to go for a quick and cheap meal.

It's a place to go to if you are craving good noodles. Good to go there during cold days for hot noodle soup to keep your self warm and full (Their quantities are HUGE!). Their hygiene isn't the best (could really improve their utensils and toilet) but great taste in food makes up for it. Recommend to order large dish of "Sensational spicy chicken with noodles" to share between 4-6 people. Possibly their best dish.

Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle is an amazing place if you're looking for noodles, dumplings and all that jazz. They are mainly known for making tasty hand-pulled noodles and that is what the majority of people order.

I have tried a variety of hand-pulled noodles from here, such as chicken, lamb, braised beef, etc., and the noodles are always chewy and great in texture. However, the broth is sometimes lacking in taste and flavour, and the amount of meat they give you is very little, however, they are generous with the amount of noodles.

The dumplings are what you expect from many other Chinese eateries, and nothing from their dumpling range really stands out, however, they have better tasting and heartier dumplings than other many other places. You can also choose whether you want them boiled, steamed, pan-fried or in sour soup.

I have also tried the Chinese beef burger which is handmade pan-fried bread with a generous serving of marinated beef topped with coriander in between. I found this to be rather tasty despite the bread being a bit dry.

The prices are OK, a bit on the cheaper side, and they are very generous with noodle proportions especially if you order a large sized bowl of noodles, which I would recommend sharing between two as it may be too much for just one.

They generally serve you very fast after you've ordered but this place is typically packed and it may take a bit longer to get the food to you during those times, and you may have to share a table with strangers.

As for the environment, the place is really cramped and the tables, chairs and cutlery are dirty and overdue for replacement/renovation.

Overall, Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle is a must for those who want authentic hand-pulled noodles (however, the broth is lacking in flavour at times), and offers a great range of dumplings and many other tasty dishes. You can definitely fill up here on a lower budget without any compromise, for those price conscious eaters!

There are many dishes here that I will always come back for every time.

This place is honestly so worth it, they use great quality ingredients and serve tasty food. I have been here countless times since discovering it.

The noodles here are great, my personal favourite has to be the cleaver cut noodles because they are so thick and hearty.

The dumplings are yummy, the panfried ones are always done so perfectly and the steamed ones are also great.

The buns are decent, not a highlight but hearty and filling.

The skewers are a bit more expensive than some other places on the street but they use good quality meat, and all is seasoned and cooked well.

All the dishes I have tried are yummy, not phenomenal food but definitely worth your time and money!

Service is virtually non existent however, it doesn't bother me much anymore as long as someome takes my order and food comes out quick.

I love this place! I really do! If you want dumplings or soupy noodles this is the place to be. There are lots of varieties of dumplings which are better than Barilla dumplings. Hand cleaved noodles (dao xiao mian) are out of this world good. Nice and chewy. They also do cumin lamb skewers and other bits and bobs like spicy meat dishes that will melt you eyes.

Came here for lunch as it was the busiest place on the block, so hoped it was a regular spot for the other diners. The menu is quite extensive and we probably should have spent more time with it but we felt pressed to give our order quickly. I ordered the lamb & fennel dumplings in sour soup and my son got the King Fu Goji berry lamb noodles (rather bland). We also ordered taro buns not realising how huge all the portions would be.

The couple opposite us got a really great looking dish, I had to ask them what it was - Hot and Spicy Lamb with cabbage. They said they ordered it every time they came.

Anyway the food came, the helpings were generous to the extreme. My son struggled and managed to finish his dish, I ate 3 or 4 of the 14 or so lamb dumplings, finished the broth and like several of the other customers, got a takeaway container for the rest. The taro buns never arrived to the table so we got them to go as well, we needed serious recovery time to contemplate eating anything more.

The place is truly basic, the table was wiped, though not thoroughly. The staff are pleasant enough, the pace fairly hectic over lunch at least as it is popular. I'll probably try their Albany branch next time.

The Chinese lamb Burger is a must try and you can't go wrong by ordering any of their Noodles - which are made fresh. I've been here several times now. I have nothing but good things to say about this place. Food is absolutely delicious, especially the different types of noodles (made in house). I can never go wrong with the Kung Fu Noodle soup. Another standout dish is the Sensational Spicy Chicken (Should be shared) with an extra helping of noodles. Their dumplings are also quite nice and can give a place like Barilla a good run for their money.

The only thing that stops them from getting a 5.0 score from me is that they do take a while to take your order sometimes and could be left sitting for a while. Also I mentioned that their dumplings are nice, however sometimes they take a while to come. Other than that, brilliant place to chow down!!!

Shaolin is a nice place when you're wanting a heartier Chinese meal.

Had previously tried the sensational chicken, shredded chicken with cold noodles and the steamed lamb and chive dumplings.

Food here is moderate in comparison to the Somerville branch. The cold noodles lacked the sour touch, and the steamed dumplings were a bit dry, with the dumpling wrap being dry and chewy.

I definitely prefer the Somerville branch where the food seams a bit more lovingly prepared.

I have been to Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle a few times! It is always so full! I love the cleaver sliced chicken noodles and the beef one as well! These noodles are made in house and you can see them do it behind the counter on the first level! They also have choices for small and large portions, small is always good enough for me but large is about $1 more... So I usually get large and I never finish my meal. I haven't really tried many other dishes here because I can't get over how good the cleaver noodles are!

Service is super average, but can't really expect much! The food and the price is what brings people back!

Freshly back from a holiday in Tokyo - where I consumed a never-before-seen amount of food but somehow lost weight (what?), I decided that I needed a fix of Chinese. Gentlepig and his darling girlfriend decided to visit Shaolin Noodles, which is one of our favourite (if not favourite) Chinese noodle bars in Auckland.

The Kung Fu noodles here are hand made in house and is definitely the star of the show. We are both regulars, and have tried most of the menu before so my recommendation is: get the spicy if you dare. Shaolin's non-spicy broth is very clear, very pure yet at times a tad bit bland for our taste (still a great broth though). I've dined here with larger parties before - and the shared plates are well above what you'd expect from a casual eatery. My favourite dishes are the stir fried spicy cabbage (sounds much tastier than the name would suggest) and the spicy pulled lamb (there seems to be a trend of spice here...).

Overall, an excellent spot for a quick, super tasty yet cheap dinner. If you love your Chinese and don't want to make a big fuss of dinner - come here! One gripe; dumplings, while freshly made and I suspect made in-house are not of the quality that other establishments can bring to the table.

Despite the recent bursts of beautiful weather hinting at summer, the wet weather gods have been defiantly battering us with wind and rain. And so it was that my friend Sigourney and I found ourselves on a cold, wet and rainy day in the heart of Balmoral’s dumpling precinct. But we weren’t here for those delicious (and ever so often dirty) morsels. We were in search of spices to warm the palate and a bowl of hand-pulled noodles to soothe our souls.

Shaolin Kung Fu Noodles occupies the corner of Dominion Road and Rockland’s Avenue; a narrowish walk way that is the dining room is lined on either side with tables and wooden booths, of which the latter’s tables are adorned with vibrant cartoon collages. Over the smoked-out glass divider, diners can watch the chef as he throws a thick rope of dough into what will eventually be the best bowl of hand-pulled noodles in town.

Whilst lamb is a rare feature on most Chinese menus in Auckland, Kung Fu’s menu shows the influence of the Muslim population of northern China with their lamb skewers piqued with spices and Chinese lamb burgers. Nose-to-tail eating is another prominent feature on the menu here, with a large number of offal dishes on offer; no chicken’s heart or gizzard has been left to waste here. But vegetarians fear not! You will be looked after just as well here with a number of tofu and vegetable dishes to suit.

After perusing the menu several times over, I plumped for the Kung Fu Spicy noodles ($9.80 for small, $10.80 for large) and one order of the Chinese lamb burger ($5), whilst Sigourney settled on the cleaver-sliced beef noodles ($10 for small, $11 for large). Both our orders were nothing short of impressive. Each bowl was a generous entanglement of wide, flat noodles with an unctuous chewiness I’ve yet to savour in other noodle dishes. Thin ribbons of bean curd and bean thread noodles lent different textures to the soup, whilst the broths themselves were both unique to each of our dishes and deeply soothing. Mine was a richly flavoured stock permeated with coriander spice and decently hot (as indicated by the foreboding slick of red chilli oil floating in my soup) whilst Sigourney’s was a subtler but still flavoursome bowl of the purest beef essence. My Chinese lamb burger was a pleasant surprise: a thick toasted pita bread with a warm yeasty aroma filled with slices of braised, cumin-rich lamb, chopped peanuts and fresh coriander, with the overall effect being the perfect, hand-held snack of spice and crunch. The bread was stained rusty red with chilli oil but its heat was relatively imperceptible, so chilli-phobes may rest easy when ordering this dish.

If these few dishes are representative of what Kung Fu’s kitchen has to offer, I’ll be returning to sample the numerous other noodle soups and the more unusual dishes on the menu. But maybe not the chicken gizzard.

Greasy, carb heavy and delicious, this is not a place I could visit often.  However, the food is tasty and the restaurant doesn't purport to be something it's not.  We had the chicken dumplings (steamed), spicy lamb soup with hand pulled noodles and kung pao chicken.  It was busy so we got the food to takeaway.  It was tasty, although the kung pao chicken was a little on the sweet side for my liking. Generous servings and easy on the wallet.  You won't be left hungry.

My friend loves the noodle soups from this place- big hearty portions and flavourful broth appeases anyone! That being said, while the dishes are cheap, there's not much meat or vegetables in there (you're mainly getting noodles) so it's more of a quantity over quality kind of meal. Their dumplings are delicious- one of my preferred versions on Dominion Road because the wrappers are nice and thin, not thick and doughy like most places.

You're not going to get a nice interior here, it's pretty outdated and the upstairs resembles someone's house in the way it's laid out. Service is also pretty absent as per usual of Asian restaurants, and they're not very accommodating when they get your order wrong either. Come here with a big group to make the experience fun as you get to order masses of food for really reasonable prices so it's great for sharing.

I just finished work and wanted to avoid the hectic traffic so I thought I would grab something to eat nearby.
Shaolin is located on busy Dominion Rd with a lot of competing restaurants but stands out with it's corner location and neon lights.
The store has a buzzing ambience and quirky decor. Like a mix between traditional Japanese with its separators and utensils and modern anime with it's table tops.
The food here comes out fast and piping hot. The portions are huge and you get so much value for what you pay.
The staff are polite and efficient.
I ordered the Chicken Wonton Noodle Soup because I couldn't make up my mind between Noodles and dumplings. The dumplings were soft and generously filled and the soup was well balanced. I like this place a lot but they could wipe down the tables more thoroughly and improve their customer service, otherwise it's amazing.

I've always been amazed at how packed this place is virtually every night. Tonight despite being cold and rainy, the place was completely packed. Infact, my friend and i occupied the last table. Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle looks tiny from the outside, but there's plenty of seating upstairs in little rooms.

The menu is extensive and there's bound to be something that sounds interesting enough for everyone. Tonight I had the Spicy Kung fu braised lamb noodle and my friend had the Kung fu chicken noodle soup. We both agreed the lamb noodle dish was superior - the hand pulled noodles are delicious. Verrrrryy yummy. I'd highly recommend you double check the noodles before ordering.

Only let down - the service. Super awkward trying to figure out where to order. I walked downstairs and they told us they'd come up and take our order. Yet no one came for at least another 10 minutes. Food was also served to a few tables that came and ordered after us first.

Food is definitely worth trying though. Cheap and cheerful.

Such a gr8 timeThere's usually enough room and you won't often be waiting for tables, I haven't really tried a lot of other stuff there but I'm always checking out what the Chinese folks have at their table, usually looks pretty good. I'm all about the Kung Fu though as that's the name on the door, their hand pulled noodle dishes include their own hand made noodles, as well as a few other types all mixed together.  It's just as much fun eating is it is trying to find all the hidden gems inside the bowl.  A cheap delicious winter feed.  I'd watch out for the table condiments though, they always seem to smell a bit suspect.

This is not the cleanest restaurant, with very tight spaces, and not the best services. However the noodles are made on the spot and this place is run by Hui ethnic group so it is Halal friendly and no pork at all! At first glance, the ambience was very reminiscent of noodle shops in Shanghai: cramped, stuffy and noisy. We were given a table on the second floor, and boy it was so stuffy. Zero ventilation and the wall fans weren't much of a help. Probably wasnt that great an idea to have piping hot noodles in 25 degree weather!

Kungfu goji berry lamb noodles (large - $12) - the cleaver cut noodles were absolutely delicious! Al dente and had just the right bite. Soup was very flavourful and the goji berries gave a whole new depth to the soup. Did not try any lamb meat as I'm not a big fan of lamb.

Kungfu Beef noodles  (large - $11) very yum, noodles were the same type as the lamb noodles. Excellent with a spoonful of their chilli on each table (be warned, its very very potent, so a small spoonful will do).

Kungfu chicken noodles - will never order this again. The noodles were yum, ramen style but was a bit too soft for me. the chicken was just shredded and dumped onto the soup, and there was too little veggies. The soup was very plain tasting. I regret ordering this dish after I saw my dining companions' dishes.

Dumplings (14 - extra dollar for steamed) - excellent fillings, but the dough was too thick. Best eaten immediately when served, after a few minutes the dumpling skin gets even more tough.

Service: service was definitely not the best. We arrived a good 15 minutes earlier than the other table in the room and their dishes were served first. I think they forgot our order as they had to check with us what our order was again. The staff do not check up on tables on the upper level often, so had to help ourselves to extra bowls and cups.

Overall: Despite their less than average service, I would be back again as their food was pretty yum. Extremely affordable for such huge portions, and plenty of parking on the side streets.

This is my favourite Chinese cheap restaurant in Auckland. I found it 4 years ago by chance, following the delicious smell of their lamb skewers, and it never stopped being my favourite cheap eat since. It is a very authentic cheap Northern Chinese restaurant, when I go there, I feel like I'm back in Beijing. Besides the lamb skewers, the home-made noodles are a must. When I lived on Dominion Road I would go to this place every second night. As a Caucasian, it took me a couple of visits to become convinced but once you have those thick hand pulled noodles in the spicy beef soup on the right night - you just can't beat that. You can't find Chinese noodle soup this good anywhere else that I know of.

The lamb dumplings are also great. As are the spicy lamb fried noodles. Anything with lamb, basically. I think they have some kind of an Islam-bent or something (unusual for China) but yeah - they treat lamb with respect and it seems to be where they really shine. Menu is way too long though. I'm sure there's plenty of stuff which is not particularly great that's on there.

And finally - an issue several others seem to have broached is service. The environs is hardly too charming in the first place (I can live with that on D road) but it's indifferent at best and downright rude at worst. I don't know what their problem is. I've noticed the branch in town doesn't seem to be doing too well. Not too hard to figure out why. I went there a couple of months ago when they were quiet and they completely stuffed up my takeaway order. It wasn't a mix up - they just hadn't bothered to clarify my order properly. It'd be a real shame to see this place go. I think it's unique and really delicious. I'd probably give it a 5 if the service was friendly. Buck it up, guys,

Shaolin Kungfu Noodles is typical of many of the eateries populating Dominion Road - utterly nondescript, gaudy lighting and signs... and wonderfully amazing authentic food.

We've been here many a time over the past couple of years that we've spent in Auckland, but this time they seem to have underwent a bit of a makeover - for the better. The floor and walls look newly-refurbished, the tables are very clean, and the toilet is finally decent! They've kept the best part of the shop, too - the glass wall behind which kungfu stunts are performed on the handmade noodles (well, not really, the noodles are just pulled and thrown around a lot, but I always like to imagine that's where they got their name from).

And the handmade noodles are a joy to behold indeed, as they always are. They are thick and uneven (a testament to being hand-pulled rather than machine-cut) and delightfully chewy. There are literally scores of noodle dishes to choose from - go for the ones that have the term 'kung fu' in them, as that is their signature noodle.

The Kung fu goji berry lamb noodles ($11) are my favourite, and I simply can't bring myself to order anything else each time we visit. It comes with lamb, goji berries, dates, black fungus, and some yellow strips whose origin I have no idea about but taste good. The broth is heavenly, probably the second best part of the dish after the noodles. The lamb does take a bit of getting used to, as these aren't the prime cuts that would be served in nice restaurants - but at $11 I'm certainly not complaining. The bf had the Kung fu spicy braised lamb noodles ($12) this time - it was pretty good, but a bit too oily for my tastes.

The service is pretty much what you would expect from a budget Asian eatery - which is to say it exists just to ensure that good food gets served to your table, and not much else. Really though, just go for the noodles - you won't regret it.

Go here often for takeaway, bit small and cramped but the fact that there is always lots of people means something :)

I try the Chinese lamb burger, which can be very strong of cumin, which I like, and I always want to try something else but end up going with the sautéed spicy chilli chicken every time,

Has a lot of chilli in it, but I eat round most of that as the flavour is great,

Wish I knew how to make it,

I love this place, come here quite often. I am surprised by the bad reviews, especially regarding the service, who dines at an authentic Chinese restaurant expecting good service?
It's like going to McDonald's expecting a fine dining experience.

I particularly love the "Sensational Chicken", it is so flavoursome and for me a real comfort food meal. It truly is sensational.

Well it is interesting to read the "awful" and low-rates reviews for this place because this place is actually one of the best Chinese-Asian style restaurants in whole Auckland for that price. I have tried so many other ones, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc and they are not so tasty and elaborated. It is like being in Asia. I come over around 2-3 times per month.

Dumplings, soups, fried noodles, skewers, anything is so yummy.

I have the feeling that most of the low-rate reviews are coming from Kiwis/Western people without any sense of taste of food who usually eat pre-cooked food and takeaway. I mean when you eat any dish you get the feeling that is hand-made and properly cooked.

European in love with Kung Fu noodle!!!

This is definitely my favourite noodle bar in Auckland and one of the top Asian restaurants on a talent laden Dominion Road. I love this place. The noodles are home made and you can often see the chef with a massive length of noodle dough in one hand and a cleaver in the other slicing away and the newly made noodles falling into a boiling pot below. It's quite incredible. I have only ever had the noodles here and look forward to trying the other food. The portions are extremely generous so I would only go for the small bowl if you're in there for the first time. You can be well fed and watered for under $10 and that's not easy in Auckland these days.

Great value for money.

Visited again today. Had the cold spicy beef noodles which was again really good. Cost me $10 and came on a flat plate w/o soup instead of in a bowl with the soup which can be a bit hard work sometimes. Was a combination of noodles, fresh tomato, sliced beef, bean sprouts funghi and a sort of sour/spicy dressing. Nice work!

The best meal I've had out in ages! Interesting, delicious and cheap. I ate the shredded chicken with vermicelli (fat, wobbly strips of bead thread noodles) and the lamb kebabs (spicy and aromatic). Also great were the Kung Fu noodles (lamb + beef) and the China burger (only $4!) Highly recommended!

We had lunch here, was really good. It is lovely to see the girl at the front making the sushi to order. It was so fresh. Very professional. As other diners have said, it is very small, with only a few tables. It wasnt overly busy when we were there but even then 3 of the 4 tables were taken. Dont be put off though, it is very reasonably priced and worth the wait for something a little different. Thanks and all the best for continued success.

This little eatery is always full of people, and offers northern Chinese food with a focus on lamb and cumin. If you order their kung fu noodles, you will see the chef stretching the noodles out by hand. Delicious! Don't come with a large group though, as the biggest table only seats 4. Also, if you arrive as a couple you could be moved to a smaller table to make room for other diners. All worth it, with the variety of food available and the large portions.

When I crave my grandmothers 'Lamian' (aka handmade flat noodles) I go to Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle. There's something magical about the art of hand pulled noodles floating in hot steamy broth with a few sprinkles of seeded chilli oil on a cold winter'a night.

The menu at Shaolin has been extended for the better and now they offer lamb skewers, chinese burgers, and a small selection of northern china dishes and staple foods. On the noodle front, all the 'Kung Fu' dishes will be their signature fresh handmade FLAT noodles. While some other dishes, like the pickled noodle soup I got tonight, will be served with the thinner stringy tubular noodles. I love the chew of fresh noodles, the way it soaks up all the flavours of the broth and tangles around the meat and veggie pieces.

This is a great Dominion road cheap eat - no ambience and basic customer service (broken English?) but really, when you are paying $10-13 for a decent size meal, who can complain?

Laura and I went to Shaolin for dinner tonight and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. We had the chicken and corn fried dumplings; eggplant, potatoes and onions; and the spring onion pizza.
The service was quick and friendly, the staff were well presented and polite. There wasn't a language barrier at all either which was nice.
The food itself was amazing. I'd definitely go there again. Three plates fed us both well and we took home takeaway as well. The dumplings were crispy on the bottom but still soft and the stuffing was incredibly tasty. The pizza was actually shredded and amazing. It was the best part of the meal if I'm honest and I could have eaten that alone. The eggplant and potato was a mixed bag. I loved the eggplant, it was soft and sweet and made fantastic dipping sauce for the spring onion pizza but I didn't enjoy the potatoes included. They were a bit dry for me.
Overall I definitely enjoyed the meal and I would go back again.

We paid $40 for two of us and that included a soda each too. A good price for the amount of food we were served!

Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle is our favourite on Dominion Road. We come here a lot. Like many other Chinese eateries on Dominion Road, it's not a flash place but the food and price more than make up for the lack of ambience.

They have a huge menu here which can be overwhelming at times, so we tend to stick to our favourites and try out a couple of new dishes only when we have a large group. The Muslim Chinese menu is very different to the Cantonese food that I am used to. They don't serve pork or rice here (except for a couple of fried rice dishes), instead they celebrate lamb and noodles. Their hand pulled noodles are chewy and springy and you can order extra noodles if you wish. It would be good if they could cut the noodles though. Taking a single noodle sometimes leads to filling your plate with a single noodle.

Downstair is always busy but they have rooms and tables upstairs. If booking for a group of 10 or more, you will likely get your own room. They don't have wine glasses here, but you can BYO pretty much anything you like. Beer seems to go well with their brand of spicy food.

There are many vegetarian options and there is usually something for everyone.

If you were only to order 3 dishes, I would recommend the Lamb & Fennel dumplings, Sensational Spicy Chicken (with extra noodles), and Sauteed eggplant in spicy garlic sauce. This is enough food for 4 or 5.

We always order the pan-fried Lamb & Fennel dumplings ($13). All the pan fried dumplings come with an edible tissue-thin layer on top of the dumplings. You eat it. It's fine. Make sure you help yourself to the condiments on each table. My favourite dipping sauce is black vinegar with a spoonful of chili.

The Sensational Spicy Chicken is a show stopper. We introduced to this dish by a friend a few years ago and have ordered it ever since. We usually order this with extra noodles because it doesn't come with quite enough. The Sensational Spicy Chicken comes in two sizes: large (feeds 4-6) or small (feeds 2-3) for around $30/25 is the perfect amount of heat and the Szechuan peppers an aromatic and addictive addition. The addition of potatoes is unusual but delicious.

The Sauteed eggplant in spicy garlic sauce ($14) is AMAZING. Always a crowd pleaser.

I find their kebabs and their burgers very dry. Neither come with any sauce. Their kung pao chicken is too spicy for my tastes.

The staff are friendly enough but rushed. Service isn't flash and English is scarce here but they know enough to get by. The more in your group the more dishes you can try and the smaller your per person bill. To be sample a good cross section of their menu, I recommend bringing 5-10 friends. We usually spend around $12-$18 per person with food to take home.

The restaurant is quite busy even on a normal weekday, though they also have more seating upstairs if the ground level fills up. We sat at the table that had a very intriguing tabletop and spent our time deciphering which cartoon was what while waiting for our food, which took a significantly long time to come. It took almost 30 mins, so not an ideal spot if you only have a half hour lunch break. Though the wait is for good reason, seeing they make the noodles by hand on the spot so it's the perfect texture and cooked al dente.

I had the Cleaver Sliced Beef Noodles and they were the delicious. The large is great value being only $1.20 more with a lot more noodles. The small was enough for me. Service is brusque. It's $10 a bowl, so I'm not arguing. Also, I may just be fussy but it's best to bring your own water bottle. The cups are often not cleaned very well (we could see a veil of oil in it after pouring in the water given to us).

When I first came across Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle over three years ago, it was extremely inexpensive and different from the other Chinese food that I had eaten before, which had been mainly in the Cantonese style. Here, the flavours were of lamb and cumin, with bread and noodles rather than rice. You can read my review from 2010 here: http://nomnompanda.blogspot.co.nz/2010/09/shaolin-kung-fu-noodle.html

Since then, this eatery has grown in popularity, opened up the upper level for larger groups of customers, put up new signage to compete with the other blinking lights across the road, added a greater selection of dumplings (these seem to be quite a fad recently), and of course, increased their prices. Their style of food may no longer be unique, but the standard is as good as ever, and the eatery is just as busy, with congestion particularly bad at the payment area, which also happens to be right next to where the food comes out of the kitchen.

Great place for a cheap, casual meal, unless you are claustrophobic, or don't have time to wait.

It is a great place for noodles and many other Chinese foods.

It's not a big restaurant but the food there do has special flavour. the space is very tiny , so you need to prepare for the waiting, and the decoration is very simple, you can watch the chef in the kitchen preparing the food for you from the window,

You can order lamb, chicken and beef strings there which cooks in a Chinese way. ,just around 10 bucks, the meat is very tender soft ,very yummy.

The beef noodles are quite popular there.$10, And the soup is also tasty.

Have you tried sliced noodles? Come here to taste it. Quite nice texture.

also it is a muslim store ,so please do not take pork or order pork as we need to respect the owner's belief

See, spending less than 10 dollars can make you full. also you can park in along the road in the residential area

I chose Shaolin Kung Fu Noodle for my birthday dinner as I wanted somewhere cheap and cheerful with vegetarian options and Shaolin fit the bill perfectly. It looks small from the outside and whenever I go past it is always full but there are lots of tables upstairs. The menu is extensive and after much deliberation we ordered the Xingjiang Lamb Fried Noodles, Kung Fu Dry Noodles with Eggs, Braised Lamb with Spring Onion, Stir Fried Chicken with Cashews and Vegetables, Lamb & Fennel Dumplings and Vegetable & Egg Dumplings. We had a few communication issues with our server as there is not a drinks menu (or we weren’t given one) and as we were seated upstairs could not see the drinks selection but nothing major. The hand pulled noodles are fantastic and I would definitely go out of my way to get them again. The Xingjiang Lamb Fried Noodles was the stand out dish, it had just the right amount of heat for me (although it was much too spicy for one of my friends), and it had great flavour with lots of cumin. The dumplings were also great with a generous amount of fennel. The dumplings are larger than average and are filled right to the edge of the pastry with meat without that air bubble that gets filled with steam and were not greasy at all. The Braised Lamb with Spring Onion and Stir Fried Chicken with cashews were average and a bit on the greasy side. The portions were substantial and were unable to finish most of the dishes but our friendly server provided us with take away containers - leftover dumplings for lunch, score! The table next to us had ordered the spring onion pizza and chinese Lamb burger which both looked delicious so I think I will have to try them next time.

Shaolin Kung Fu Noodles is a small and unsuspecting noodle joint in the heart of Balmoral's cheap and cheerful precinct. The hand-pulled noodles are their biggest attraction, as are the cumin-spiked lamb skewers and Chinese lamb burger. Weird sounding, we know, but you'll have to trust us on this. This is Chinese food as you've probably never experienced before, and it is all good. We tried beef noodles which were quite nice but also had lots of fat attached as per another review here. They serve hot tea for free which is quite nice prior to a meal. We also tried dumplings which were quite bland and not the best dumplings but not the worst and with the Chilli and vinegar sauce it was yum. I'd recommend trying it and seeing if it's up your alley for food

A popular spot for Chinese hand-pulled noodles! We got the famous Xinjiang lamb noodles which was really rich in flavour and definitely had a kick to it. The texture of the noodles was top-notch and was exactly what I came here for. The lamb was thinly sliced and well-seasoned but could have done with more lamb, there were only a few sad pieces of lamb. The kebabs were OK. The spring onion pancake was a good simple side dish. I highly recommend dipping it in the noodles sauce! Portion was huge for the price and food came out fast.

Visited them to have some halal chinese food. So, i ordered beef burger (spicy). I never had such an amazing burger. I loved it. It was spicy, full of flavours, quantity of meat was good. Beef cooked in chinese style served on chinese pan bread i think. It was delicious. Next time will try some other things. They serve halal. thank you.
