Absolutely yummy!. We got bbq pork fried rice, rice noodles and chicken, spring rolls and beef sizzling plate. All delicious and priced reasonable. Great staff, good space between tables and door opened for some fresh air. Highly recommend :)

Went there on the weekend. Probably the 3rd time I've been to this restaurant. Always seated immediately. And the 2 staff that work there are polite and friendly.
Food is always good from here, never had a bad experience.
Ambience can get a bit ugly because of the amount of drunk people that come there after a night out.

We normally order the chicken, yang Zhou fried rice, sweet & sour pork, pork belly with cabbage which is a must have from here, beans with pork mince or any of the hotpot dishes 😊.

Dodgy looking yet fantastic Chinese Restaurant in Auckland CBD near Sky Tower.
As they say you shouldnt judge based on looks.
I have to say this place does not look pleasing from outside but I personally think that this place has one of the best “Mapo Tofu” dish in Auckland.
Its kinda in a big street right across the road from
Sky Tower so I guess I cant use the metaphor “hidden gem”

Craving for duck and yes tried this restaurant cos everytime i passed by they always full of people so it must be nice and of course it’s not disappointed.. got my half roast duck after wait for 10mins and it’s really yummy, i will come again to try their other menus.. and also they open till midnite which is the best advantages
Visited recently for lunch with a friend, they make an amazing Mapo Tofu, with very generous portioning. Also with 'complimentary' tea and soup, however the latter is quite salty. The 'shabby' tables referenced by another reviewer is what makes these types of restaurants feel authentic - you'd find plenty of these scattered throughout Hong Kong, so no harm in having one here in Auckland. Prices are low, and they're always busy.
Ok I'm going to be honest. This places isn't the cleanest, it's no sky city but the food here is authentic and delicious af. Like I could not recommend this place enough. The food is so good and value for money. It's open late so when you don't want Mcd's or Denny's after a hard night and just want some beautiful fried rice, you need to immediately come here. Even if you're not out late, go there for some good Chinese food!
I ordered the chicken noodle soup for $10. Plus the 0.50cents for chillie oil. Surprisingly you get a quarter of a chicken served with egg noodles and asian spinach. Food was good for $10 served in Auckland city.
I was desperate for Asian at 2am! And this was the only place I could find available. Wongkok was definitely worth the walk. I was seated with a menu and hot tea straight away the waitress even went through the menu with me. I choose the tofu and shitaki mushroom dish which was delicious. Huge portions and exceptional value for money. The decor is dated and definitely nothing flash but it is clean and honest. Lovely staff, child friendly. Busy for the time of morning it is open until 3am! I will definitely come here again.
The best thing about this restaurant, apart from the food is their operating hours! Group of us went here at 2:30 am. Ordered 2 dishes of Chicken fillet with pepper and Spicy Tofu. Pepper dish was really tasty, crispy chicken really goes well with the sauce. Tofu was different but delicious too.

This is the only place I go to when I lose 6 digits or more in a night. Because it doesn't hurt your wallet! Quiet restaurant too, so you can reflect on the silly times you throw down your stack of yellow and chocolate chips.

My go to cantonese food in CBD... it is authentic cantonese food.... cheap and big serving... it like a typical HK eating houses so don’t expect something fancy...
Great place for a late night feast! Heaps of things to choose from the menu, and very affordable price as well. But there are many other better Chinese restaurants during normal opening hours.
Honestly this place is great if your drunk and need food at 2am. Great filling portions of food that taste pretty good (especially when you are drunk). Service is good and I would definitely recommend trying their little complimentary soup which you can order by itself for $2 it's amazing. My favourite dish is probably the Yangzhou fried rice, the portion is huge (not when you drunk tho). Honestly this place is a blessing for when you craving Chinese food late at night, the service may not be that great but let's be honest, who can provide good service at 2am when they should be sleeping. All in all check this place out if you want decent Chinese food at night.
I had beef fried rice with a couple of colleagues. Food was served in a timely manner. It was authentic and staff was friendly. They also served tea. I would love to try other ones here as it's close to my work.
I was craving for asian cuisine and booom! I was hesitant at first but because of the good smell we tried some of their dishes. I was not disappointed. I so love their way of cooking the food very asian and also the tastes were all just perfect to my taste buds! Would probably eat here again. ☺️☺️☺️

The cafe is nice and food there as well. They do have big portions for quite cheap price. We had BBQ pork fried rice and Hongi combination meat fried rice noodles, which were yammy and we couldn't even finish it. The look of the place is just a typical not really clean but not too bad Chinese cafe... Unfortunately I put a lower rate, because of its service. The lady that served us had a face like "leave me alone", even when my friend accidentally spilled the glass of tea, she just gave us few tissues, and we had to ask her to bring the kitchen-towel. By the end when we told her thank you, she didn't reply anything...
This place has that air of authenticity about it, which is a nice way of saying don't be put off by the grubby appearance it's got an A for food hygiene from the council and that's all that matters.
The food is predominantly Hong Kong style so quite mild flavour and there's plenty of choice. We had the bbq pork and the eggplant and pork mince. Both were tasty, nothing outstanding but quite passable and they came with a free soup which was delicious.
Very authentic Hong Kong style cafe and restaurant. I like their Singapore Style Fried Vermicelli and Pork Trotters the most. Fair price and always nice service.
This place is nothing to look at but I know from experience that some plain Janes can really surprise you.
We were greeted and served by a friendly male who brought us tea right away to our table ( he was pretty much carrying the sour faced female staff in terms of customer service).
We ordered the hainanese chicken and roast pork set meals which comes with steamed rice and soup. For $13 per meal this was extremely good value. The dishes came out quickly and I thoroughly enjoyed my roast pork meal (bonus points for getting the skin nice and crispy) while my friend thought her hainanese chicken meal was just okay and constantly stole from my plate. If you're looking for value for money and don't mind zero ambience and a hit and miss customer service, then you might want to check out this place!!
One of the few places who make good pork & century egg congee.
Wongkok Cafe is a nice place to go to when you're craving Cantonese food when you're in the city. Food is what you would expect, comfort food that's not too heavy, and at good sharing size portions.
Another plus is that they open till the early hours so it's a nice place to go to when you're peckish for some home style cooking.
Me and the ah lads went out for a 2am feast and were spoilt for choice but settled on this fine establishment, none the wiser about the food quality but willing to take a risk. Impressed is all i can say. Small business putting out classic asian tastes.

Wongkok has been around for as long as I can remember and used to be my family's go to place for a good hokkien mee before discovering better places :P After many years of no Wongkok in our lives, we decided to have dinner here on a Thursday night. Upon walking in it was nice to see the familiarity of the place and the wait staff ( nothing has changed at all haha). It was quite empty tho as there were only two tables seated.
For the four of us , we ordered the deep fried squid, the long beans with mince, the salmon with black bean sauce, the braised tofu and a small dish of roast pork ( Siew yok). The dishes came out super fast and was served by the friendly man that has been working there forever, which was good to see cos the other waitresses were really unfriendly and forever had a "sour face" ( time to invest in some customer service training)
Squid: 7/10, this dish was really worth for its price ($18). it was surprisingly tasty and not too oily like some of the deepfried squid dishes you find in other chinese restaurants. Definitely a dish I'd reccomend ( if you're not watching your waist size hahaha)
Salmon with black bean sauce: 3/10, this was a miss for me as I guess salmon really doesnt need a black bean sauce to be delicious. The dish was drenched with oil and was way too salty for me haha. $16, wouldnt get again
Long beans and XO sauce: 7/10, although super oily, this dish was packed with flavour and also served with a generous amount of beans and mince, really nice to eat with plain white rice. Highly reccommended!
Braised tofu:9/10: actually my favourite dish of the night haha. Although I didnt take a photo of it, this came with a whole heap of vegetables ( corn, cabbage, mushrooms, carrots) and wonderfully braised tofu pieces; all served in a generous portion of delicious gravy. Dish of the night for me!
Roast pork: 3/10, once again WAY too oily and the skin wasnt even crispy which was quite disappointing :( you can definitely find better on the next street down haha.
Overall the waiter was good ( not the waitress) and food was above average for the price you were paying. Ambience wasnt that great doe as it did give off a cheap unpleasant feel. Reccommended dishes: the squid, long beans and Braised Tofu. Probably wouldnt return for a while as I know theres many other chinese eateries that offer better food haha
After almost 15 hrs of travel to get here and start the holiday... The Wongkok was a perfect cheap and cheerful Mapo Tofu that is comparable to any other like place... Not sure about all the diced carrots, with corn and peas.... But totally satisfied.
It's the second time I've been there today.I don't know what they kind of dish they are good at making.Anyway, I ordered Hainanese Chicken Rice last time. It was not impressive. This time I odered bak kut teh ($12.5), the taste is quite bland actually. And my friend ordered beef congee (around $8).I'm not gonna judge the congee, just want to show you how it looks like as a reference.But according to my friend, he says it was quit tasty.Can anyone suggest any good dishes from Wongkok?
Yes, the service can be improved in many ways. I called to make a takeaway order it went directly into voice mailbox. I tried several times after the third attempt I placed my order on there voice mailbox. Went to see if my order was ready, to my surprise it was not ready. Told the girl I called several times and each time I called it went into voice mailbox. I told her "don't you guys check your voice mailbox"? She replied "Oh sorry don't know how to do that"? had to wait 25 mins. for my order. Told her after all that I should get a discount (she laughed). But, I was serious about it. That is very, very, very poor service when you want to place a takeaway and it goes directly into voice mailbox and they don't know how to check it HMMMMM something is wrong. But I must say the food is good.
I've had the beef brisket noodle and it's really good! Very authentic and flavourful. Really worth the price. Their service though...could be more pleasant but all in all, I'll definitely go back for the food again!
Great food, okay service, reasonable price. Cantonese staff that cook well. Amazing part is they make the hokkien noodles amazingly (this is a Malaysian dish so that's quite impressive). Good reliable place to get a good feed.

Service can be improved. The inside is neat and pretty simple. I had a really good chicken congee from here, it was at a good price as well. The size is reasonable and most of their food is really good. The congee did take awhile until it was served. The wonton noodles here are also great. The nooodles weren pretty consistent, hot tea was good, plus good company makes it a good experience. Would come back again for more in the future.

This place is a gem, serving absolutely fantastic Asian cuisine to only those who know. Old Chinese art covers the walls, the lights are bright, there’s no music and the place has a distinct musky smell, probably from the old furniture. But you’re here for the food, probably at 1 in the morning, so as long as it’s tasty, everything else is a formality. You can’t come here once, as the menu is so extensive and the portions are quiet large but what you do want to do is venture out of your comfort zone, because the less familiar the dish, the more delicious it’s going to be. Take the plunge, don’t be a coward.
I was very drunk, the ladies were lovely the roast pork on rice was delicious and even made a special dish that I missed from china on request.
I've been coming here with my best mate for about 10 years. We always order Yang Zhou Fried Rice ($16) and Sweet and Sour Pork ($18). Over the years the price has gone up, but the food quality, taste, and quantity is always good.
Been coming here for 15 years. Quality of the food has not changed. To be fair always turn up after mid night after a big night. The food, service, and vibe is exactly what I love about this place and hope it never changes.
4 stars for food and 2 stars for service. Found the cafe lady rude and least interested. Will prefer a take away rather than eating there. Servings have good quantity and even the service is quick.
I've been going to this place for dinner for a while now. They used to be quite reasonably priced, however, it's a but expensive now. However, the food is good. I usually have the "Beef Stir Fried Noodles" and "Beef in Black Bean Sauce" with a single portion sticky rice. There are heaps of other options available at this restaurant. They also do vegetarian versions of most meals!

Its just amazing. Iv been here 10+ times. The food is next level. Perfect textures. Its a hidden gem. Have not had a bad meal. Its my go to in Auckland. If you dont go, you are missing out.
Spring rolls amazing. Black bean beef stir fry and sweet and sour pork good dishes. Bigger servings when dining in compared to their takeaway menu. Parking is a bit challenging. Select parallel parking available outside the store otherwise you will have to use side streets.
