Had the Nepalese tea, tofu chowella and the vegetarian curry bowl and my companion had the seafood chow mein. The Nepalese tea had a pleasant mildly spiced taste and wasn’t sweetened which was nice. The tofu chowella was spicy and beautifully flavoured and vegetarian curry was mild and packed full of fresh veggies. It’s different to Chinese and Indian curries so would recommend giving it a go even if you’re not usually a curry person. The seafood chow mein also had a nice mild flavour. The portion sizes for the mains were huge (the curry comes with a HUGE portion of rice on the side) and good value weren’t overly oily. Loved the ambience too!

Really nice food in an inconspicuous location. The place was a bit dark but the food was great for the price. The lamb chowella and the bone in chicken curry were amazing. For two people we got 10 momo, the lamb, the fish fry, and a ne-thali set

First time trying Nepalese food and I was blown away by it. I love that they have so many vegetarian options to choose from. We tried the momo, mushroom curry, chowmein, burger, saag and sides of rice flakes and roti. They are all very tasty, my daughter cannot handle spicy food, she was content with the roti, momo and saag. I cannot wait to come back and try more dishes. It felt like everything was made fresh, I think it was as it took some time to come out. The place was very busy on a Wednesday night. Thanks for a great meal!

NEPALESE FOOD at📍TAMA Eatery! I included these in my @zomatonz “Oksana Overeating in Auckland” Collection! This was my first time trying Nepalese cuisine and it was such a explorative and exotic experience for me! We got the Lamb Chowella, Steamed Chicken Dumplings, Goat Curry, Chicken Tacos and Saag!
-
• Lamb Chowella (10/10) HOLYYY so this is a dish with incredibly explosively-seasoned tender lamb cubes and TOASTED RICE FLAKES and fried mung beans which fascinated me so much. The first mouthful was absolutely insane because I didn’t expect it to be so CRUNCHY! I won’t say any more because you all need to try this for yourself! • Dumplings (9/10) I loved the sesame-tomato soup! Such an interesting flavour and paired extremely well with the juicy dumplings! My only downfall is the filling probably lacked a bit of flavour.
• Curry (9/10) amazingly tender and surprisingly light in terms of flavour! However it was a bit dry for a Curry and the ratio of curry : rice was probably a bit imbalanced for my personal liking because I like to drench the rice with all the sauce! But the rice was incredibly soft and fluffy which reminded me of clouds hahaha.
• Tacos (8/10) kind of just like an ordinary taco for me, but the chicken tenders were cooked to PERFECTION it literally melted away in the mouth! A sweet-Spicy sauce elevated the flavour but watch out for jalapeños in there!
Overall the flavours are on the salty-flavourful side so be prepared to have a overwhelmed palate!

Really affordable prices too! However we also ordered the venison dish and was expecting that, but when we asked the waitress she said “oh there was no more”...and this was already during the arrival of our dishes. If you don’t have something left, maybe inform diners right at the beginning so we can order an alternative rather than being left short of a dish. Not really happy about that.

Food: 9/10
Price: 9/10
Service: 6/10
Ambience: 7/10

The food arrived very late.
We ordered the momos, chowmein and some bar snack. Food was good. Different than what we expected. For dessert we got the Malpua not quite like the indian malpua but the taste was good with fennel seeds and peppercon powder.
I will come back for the momos !

Food took a while to come out, but when it did!
Really great dining experience here, with amazing flavours & lovely service (although our waitress was new, so still learning.

If you like spicy, I highly recommend the chicken nibbles. We also had the big big plate which had some amazing spicy meat & delicious veges, a perfectly cooked egg and small portions of other less memorable foods. Definitely still worth getting.

Others on the table ordered a pork belly noodle soup, which they really enjoyed.

Goat curry was good and Momos (dumplings) were exceptional. Either the chicken or pork (couldn't tell the difference tbh) had so much flavour! Our table unanimously loved them.

Highly recommend you try Tama for unique flavours.

Personally, I loved it and will be back.

Edit: recently returned & tried the momos again (love the pork!) Also tried the lamb sekuwa, lamb chowella, edamame. Everything was delicious, especially loved the edamame which was mixed with onion, tomatoes and green chilli.

They serve big 1.8L jugs of Orion beer as well. Great for after work drinks!

Highly recommend.

Really had an out of this world (or really just Auckland) experience here at Tama last weekend! Ordered a lot of dishes to try and every single dish had us surprised and raising our eyebrows! Although not every dish agreed with our taste buds, it is likely to be due to culture shock. Very strong and rich flavors we never tried before.

For safe choices, definitely go for the chicken nibbles which are just a yummy sweet fried chicken and also the steamed dumplings which will allow you to savour the flavors.

The chilli momo is intensely yummy, but may overwhelm some with the unique sauce and filling so maybe pair with a vege dumpling! The sekuwa wasn’t a my favourite but was my boyfriend’s favourite, the rice flakes really do add another dimension to the flavors and textures. Waiwai noodles go soggy, so eat up quick!

Must order: the baji set. Different, unique and authentic. It lets you try everything, so it is a win-win. Try mix and matching flavors on the dishes!

Amazing experience, the waitress was also the nicest I’ve had in a long while! Expressing with enthusiasm all the dishes and the culture behind each, pairings and origins, what they tested for fusion and what they may have replaced for better tastes. Thank you.

The food is so delicious! Really unique flavours for those who have not tried Nepalese cuisine before. Everything we tried from the menu was amazing. Lots of gluten free and even vegan options clearly marked on the menu. At the counter when you pay they have a little plate with sugar and fennel seeds which they told us in a Nepalese after-dinner tradition- would highly recommend trying this was a lovely way to finish our meal. Can’t wait to come back and try more of the menu

This has become one of our regular spots for late night deliciousness. This place is open till late and caters wonderful nepali cuisine. It is a go to spot for the youth. Friday night kareoke is a must to experience the vibrant culture this place nurtures. You will also get to here some local nepali music too. I love the streaming hot moms with the sauce. Sadheko a spicy lemony warm chicken salad is amazing and so us sekuwa which is barbequed mutton pieces on charcoal is on of a kind. I am never taking it off my list for late night spots for awesome food.

I went in to tama for the first time last night as a group of 4. I tried to call them the day before and on the day to book a table - but they don’t have any answer machine for hours they are not open (closed on Monday).

Even though it was a Tuesday night, we were the only customer and the room was quite dark. I think it could improve a little on the interior, as it felt like it was an ex Japanese restaurant and they put on few bits to make it look more “Nepalese”. Better lighting would definitely help.

We had a vegetarian momo (dumpling), and ordered separate mains each. Ive has momo at my Nepalese friends house before, and this one was as tasty as home made. The skin is different to Chinese style dumplings (white thick skin), and similar to shao-mai (thin yellow skin). I think it had some mushroom inside, but not 100% what was in it, but the texture felt quite “meaty” as per say. And sitting in sesame flavoured sauce. Highly recommended.

For main, I had a Ne-thali set, as I wanted to try a plate with most variety, and chose goat curry. And I throughly enjoyed t. It’s not like a meal where you have crazy sensory experience, but I would say it was a very homely tasty meal. It does definitely feel like smack in the middle between Chinese/south east Asia and an Indian meal. It’s spiced like Indian meal, but a little simpler, and not as chilli. But uses ingredients like mung bean in gravy which are more towards other parts of Asia.

For a drink, I ordered a thing called Ranjana drink, which I had no idea what it would taste like, as the man at the restaurant has described it as a soda with some black salt. And it was literally like that. My table has come to a conclusion that it tastes like Rotorua in a glass (it has very sulphur like smell from the salt), and indeed quite salty. He said it’s commonly drank in Nepal to aid digestion, but I had to order something else as it just wasn’t my cup of tea. And he was kind enough to write the bill off.

Overall, although there is definitely a room for improvement, I would definitely go back again.

What an interesting culinary experience! I've never experienced true Nepalese cuisine beyond the little Nepalese section at Mt Everest Kitchen (very tasty) so was fascinated to see what was on offer. We came for dinner and since we were entirely unfamiliar with the menu, we decided to try out a few different dishes to share hoping that it wouldn't be too much food.  That wasn't a problem since portions were small (but decent for the price). We tried the venison momo (delicate skinned dumplings with generous, meaty filling in a tasty sour sesame-ish sauce, these broke apart a bit too easily I found) $15 for 10,lLamb mince chatamari for $10 (awesome chewy texture rice-flour pancake wrapped around somewhat tasteless lamb and bean filling - needed lots of sauce), roti (3 little flat, non-flaky roti, nothing like the flaky malay version) for $5 with ghee (extra $2 for a drizzle - not worth the extra $2 I think) and the newari  meat stew for $10 (small portion but absolutely delicious, melt in the mouth pork, and moreish, paired perfectly with the roti). My friend also ordered the Ranjana soda with cola - we both thought it was the worst thing we tried that night, tasted salty and sulphurous - I must be missing something with this one ;) If you go - I highly recommend trying the momo (you don't need to do venison I think since I'm sure milder meats would be just as good, and a lot cheaper) and the newari meat stew. Delicious experience - thanks Tama team :)

The Mrs and I visited Tama on the auspicious day of "Dusherra" or "Dasain", the Hindu festival. Located at the junction of K road and Upper Queen, it's not too difficult to spot the eatery. Loved the decor, esp. the Buddhist prayer flags. We ordered for steamed pork Momo's (dumplings), lamb curry (with sides of rice, tomato chutney, stir fried greens and daal (lentil soup) and Alu-tama (potato curry with bamboo shoots) with chiura (dried flattened rice flakes + dried soyabean). Momo's, as awesome as we get back in Darjeeling with an awesome-er sesame-corriander chutney; elevates the taste for sure. Lamb curry was nice; we loved the simple daal and tomato chutney much more. And the Alu-tama takes the cake; the chiura-soyabean adds to the texture contrast; must have if you are a fan of bamboo shoot. Definitely recommend this place for someone who wants to experience the Nepali cuisine.

Decided to try something different around K Road. I had heard lots about Tama from work colleagues and gave it a go for dinner. Very different menu - lots of options and they even cater to different dietary requirements. Most dishes have a vegetarian option and can be vegan & Gluten Free. We ate the Pork Mo:Mo:s, Wai Wai and Chowmein. All had great flavour and each one tasted different. The decor is very cute. It is almost as if they have taken an outdoorsy setting indoors! Service was good. The chefs and service staff are Nepalese and said the taste is as close to home as can be. If you cannot take spice, be sure to tell them at the beginning as their default spice level is pretty darn decent! Will be back to try everything on the menu because it looks sooo good

A good dining experience at Tama. We went to the restaurants during dinner time as suggested by a Nepali friend. Food-wise, it's very unique, even from Indian curries. Tasty tho, just a little bit over priced. The restaurant feels quite old. It's a bit oily on the dining tables. So if you want a different experience from all western food, try Tama sometimes.

Finally tried this place after months of driving past it. I visited when they had a limited menu, I have been told that they will bring back the full menu the following week. I tried their popular Nepalese dumplings. I was hungry and expected it to not be enough but I was full by the time I reached my last dumpling. The waiter was very helpful and polite, alcohol is served here, there are steps going down to the main restaurant floor but there are tables by the entrance if steps aren't convenient.

If you always wanted to try Nepaleses food, Tama Is the place to be. It’s hard to describe the flavours because they are nothing like anything I’ve tasted before. All I can say is they are full of flavour with generous servings and you won’t be disappointed! Go try it out!

Well, yet another Nepalese restaurant experience. This one locates in the city on the upper queen just across the K Road you will see. Must admit this is the first time I learnt that actually there are quite a number of Nepalese in Auckland! So, you don't need me to tell you how good this is. The meat plater is yummy, can't help wonder why Nepalese restaurants can make such nice plater? Momo, of course, delicious in both fried one and the team one. Edamame, this is beyond my expectations it's refreshing and tasty. Great hospitality, good food, a good Friday evening.

I'm hoping they open again soon. The easiest go to is their mixed platter - it has everything you want. My favourite would have to be the momos - deep fried dumplings that tastes like a cross between southeast Asian and Indian flavours. Oh and the fries. What a good twist a simple change in seasoning does for the fries!

*you guys nailed it* My first ever experience trying authentic Nepalese cuisine. It was really worth a visit. The restaurant was very quaint and modest looking and staff was super hospitable and welcoming. We ordered fried and steam momos and also ordered thupka. The best thupka i've ever tested. I have to say i enjoyed every bite of the meal. Highly recommend. We will be back soon.

Tama Eatery & Bar on Upper Queen St, CBD, was a fantastic exciting dining experience to have, trying out Nepalese cuisine. The restaurant was very quaint and modest looking and staff was super hospitable and welcoming. I ordered a mixed berry lassi due to the humid evening and this was very refreshing. To eat, I ordered some pork steamed dumplings served spicy and these have to be some of THE best dumplings I’ve ever tasted. My main was a chicken Nepalese curry with rice and roti. My dish was exceptional. I order very hot and the curry was so fragrant and aromatic not to mention, rustic. I was truly delighted, so much so that I want to return to try more of the menu. Highly recommended!

Had a really nice meal here during our last night in Auckland. We did a bit of a progressive dinner and were really lucky to stumble upon TAMA for a fantastic Nepalese meal. Don’t be alarmed by the professional pictures - the food is real, tasty and not overly expensive! We had an order of dumplings (pan fried were delicious!) and an order of veggie curry with roti. Topped off with a generous glass of wine and a cold Japanese beer, our tab was just over $50 NZ. Enjoy this great spot just off of K Road!

There was only one waiter working on Friday night but the service was fantastic and he did great considering how busy it was. The food was amazing but it was a little difficult to hear the waiter and others with the volume of the music.
