This used to be my Sunday Yum Cha go to after browsing the Takapuna Sunday market. Love the buzz in the restaurant which is filled with a lot of local chinese as well as Kiwis who have got into the habit of a morning yum cha. The venue is old and looks like its in need of a bit of a reno but the food is authentic and good. Though more Chinese in style and flavour rather than typically Cantonese like the yum cha restaurants that you would normally get in Hong Kong.
Like:
1. The huge variety on the push trolleys that come around - everything from roasted meats, to side dishes, porridge and desserts. Also has an ala carte menu that you can order specialty dishes, noodles and rice from.
2. Portions are generous so this is a good place to share and have a group meal as the portions are good, generous and meant for sharing.
3. My favourites are the fried squid, congee porridge with century egg, the rubber band or soya sauce noodles, the prawn toasts, the roast cha siew, roast duck, har kow, siew mai and cheong fun.
4. Also love a good mango pudding or custard tart for a sweet ending. Their mango pudding could be more like what we get in Hong Kong, served with the evaporated milk on the top but I guess this might be the way its prepared in China rather than HK. Also I did not see Tofu Fa on the menu or did I miss that.
Can be slightly pricey but for us, a once a week indulgence especially when we miss the convenience of Chinese food.
Very nice place to visit. The food was delicious. Big servings. The staff were so friendly. Excellent service. We will definitely be back! A lot of food choices.
今天员工聚餐在名豪吃的非常开心,大家都吃的非常满意,菜的品种又多又美味,老板娘和老板都很客气,赞一个!
I can vouch that this restaurant provide friendly staff, tasty and fresh food. Their pan fried dumpling is my favourite and it is to die for! I still have yet to find dumplings that is good as theirs. Excellent food and hospitality.
Outstanding food, perfect service, can’t go wrong at all. I have visited twice in the last three weeks and they can expect me to become a regular. My experience in both Yum cha and dinner service have been nothing but the best. The staff were respectful and friendly, they really made me feel welcomed. The food was absolutely exquisite. The different flavours and blend of sauces and spices, it really did spark a new appreciation of authentic Chinese food.
Lovely night with the family 😍
Fresh food, friendly & kind staff and relaxing atmosphere
Sorry no photos because ate all the food before we could take some hahaha
Thank you very mich
This is my favorite place to eat some yumcha! Authentic chinese flavour specially their pork soimai is a must try! The food here is delicious and you really have to try when you are around takapuna!
Highly recommended! Real yum cha love buffet! 👍better than other yum cha buffet ❤️
nice place, foods are tasty and good service
Wednesday buffet nights are awesome! Big range of dishes, all tasty and fresh. Staff are super friendly and very accommodating. Would definitely recommend for large groups, lots of big tables to enjoy the array of dishes together. For 28$ per person it is great value for money! Would be great if they did buffet on the weekends too 😊
Decent yumcha place on the shore although as far as I'm aware, a little pricier than other places. We came here as a relatively big group of 8 for their wednesday night yumcha buffet dinner ($28 pp). Staff were friendly and accommodating when had last minute changes to the number of people we had booked for. The place was surprisingly quiet given the special buffet dinner, we probably could've gotten away with not booking even for a group of 8.
Foodwise, the options were pretty standard morning yumcha fare. There were several varieties of prawn dumplings (spinach, coriander etc.) and most of the more common items were available although the selection was definitely more limited than the normal lunch menu (specifically no rice rolls, roast duck, and a lack of dessert options other than egg tarts, sesame balls and steamed cake things). There were also some non standard yumcha dishes like fried rice/noodles, sweet and sour pork, chicken wings etc. although these were also a relatively limited selection. The carts still circulated as per usual, only difference would be that you can freely pick without really worrying about cost etc.
Quality wise, it tasted pretty much the same as what you'd get at a standard morning yumcha although my main complaint would be that some foods, especially the ones that did not come in the individual steamers, were definitely a little on the lukewarm side when served (since the servers would walk around with large plates of foods and then individually portion them out to tables who wanted them thus resulting in a lot of food getting cold quickly. This was also probably relevant to the relative "unbusyness" of the place compared to lunchtimes. Overall, for $28, it was alright value although I probably wouldn't come again as honestly, we got a bit tired of the same selection of foods being offered despite still being somewhat hungry.
I had dinner and then yum cha at the fortune fountain in Takapuna. Delicious food!! Friendly staff. Dumplings OMG to die for. My new favourite yum cha place!!!
Heard lots of good things about this place from my friends on the shore, decided to take my parents there for their wedding anniversary.
Booking was easy and the lady on the phone was very helpful. We were greeted by friendly staffs as soon as we arrived and we were seated straight away. We were surprised how nice and elegant this place looks, compare to most Cantonese restaurants on the shore.
We ordered the fresh lobster 2ways, the sashimi (delicious And fresh), the lobster with cheese sauce and crispy noodle (nicely made). We ordered Peking duck 2 ways, the roasted duck with pancakes and sauce (crispy skin and tender meat), also the duck meat stirfry with cabbage wraps (Delicious!). We also had the rack of lamb cantonese style, it was very tasty and tender. Then portions were very generous, we ended up with lots to take away.
The service was very good, staffs there are really friendly, and speak good English. The atmosphere was good, nice and clean. Spacious and you don't feel cramped in like most Cantonese places. Can't wait to go back and try their yum char.
Would definitely recommend this place for some authentic Cantonese cuisine.

My prayer to the food god has finally been answered! For the price of a main in your average Auckland restaurant, you can now get all you can eat yum cha.
Not just your average shitty filthy Chinese restaurant, this place servers high quality authentic tasting Cantonese dishes.
Apart from all your favourite yum Cha classics , you can Lao get all the yummy favourites. Ranging from sweet and sour pork, cryspy chicken, spicy chicken to fried noodles, wok fried vegetables to delicious cold dishes.
Sky is the limit for what you can eat here! We know where we will be every Wednesday fr now on!
Just ambient, decent food. One of the better Chinese restaurants in takapuna, good service too. If you not only looking for fancy chinese food, come here.
The best Yum Cha (dim sum) place in North Shore. Nice environment, friendly waiters and waitresses; and scrumptious food. Love the variety of choices and this is one of my best places when having small or big group of friends. A bonus is easy to find a parking space and a short walk to the beach and shops. Just a fantastic place to be!
An excellent Cantonese cuisine restaurant - by far and away the best Chinese food in the area of Takapuna - with friendly management and staff . We are Kiwis who spend a lot of time in Asia and have been regulars at 'Fortune Fountain' for a few years. The latest good experience is their takeaway menu which provides true restaurant quality Chinese dishes at extremely good value prices - we plan to order for our Saturday night takeaway meal in about 15 minutes - Prawn and Coriander Dumplings, 'Shu Mai ' followed by a great main dish.
Top 5 seafood restaurant in my list. My favorite dim sum is their ice duran cake. But whatever dishes you order will not let you down. Of course, all the Guangzhou cuisine taste sweet and delicious, this one is more sweet than any others I’ve ever tried. Kiwis must try it.
Omg it was the best dinner we've had in ages. Loved food, loved people! So friendly and very attentive. We had prawn dumplings- they were huge! Fried rice- amazing plus fresh green veggies. Very friendly staff made us feel like home. We didn't even realise we were there past their opening time,- they were looking after us all evening, making us feel so special. Will definitely be back! Such amazing place to find! So happy! Thank you very much! Certainly highly highly recommend to everyone!
Reasonably priced yum cha service for lunch, the food is yummy and comes out quickly, you can also order dishes if you couldn’t wait for the trolleys to do their rounds. Most of the staff can speak English which is a bonus.

We’ve been here numerous times for both their lunch yum cha service & for their dinner a la carte, always serving great food at good prices & efficient service.
Yumcha: they always have a complete range of dimsum on offer & you wont have to wait long for them to make their rounds.
Dinner: generous portions, tasty, and reasonably priced.
It’s one of our trusty chinese restaurants that we go to & would recommend people to try .
Service is quick and fast, tea is tasty and they can speak English well enough.
Yum char pieces were so tasty and done beautifully.
Toilets are so amazing for a Chinese restaurant So clean and tidy!
Will come back for yum char and there dinner meals so tasty and delicious.
First time in Auckland and a attended a friends small wedding dinner for family and close friends.
The food here is definitely compatible if not better that some Chinese restaurants in China. Was surprise by the great taste and diversity of dishes offered.
Taste was good especially their special lamb dish. The sweet and sour pork was tangy and not overly sweet. The stuff tofu was super soft and smooth and the cauliflower casserole with wax meat was delicious. Their spring chicken was tasty despite being just a steam chicken.
Service was impeccable especially the attentiveness of their staff. Recommendation by the restaurant owner, Stella also help to recommend the best dishes in the house. Could not decide between the salted fried baby lobster or the special lamb.
Price was reasonable too. Definitely recommending this restaurant to my friends.
I went here for yum char. This place had friendly staff who were able to communicate in reasonably good English. The staff were friendly. Overall good food and service.
In contrast to yum cha at lunch time, the service is much better during dinner.
We ordered a fried rice and a tofu dish and found that the tofu dish was very bland but the fried rice was bursting with flavour. It was difficult for 2 people to finish off the 2 dishes, portions are on the bigger scale of things.
The dishes cost just under $50 and was definitely on the pricey side for what it was.
Ambiance is lovely with a large interior decorated with Chinese paintings and a large tank filled with creatures from the sea.
Never fails to deliver on taste and the day before Easter Friday was no exception. Peeking Duck is always a must as is the sizzling beef. I swear it's the best Peeking Duck in town. We also had the Chicken fried rice witch goes down a treat. Super tasty and so tender. A generous serving as well that we couldn't finish.
Visited April 2017
I have never eaten duck in my life before Fortune Fountain. This place had an absolutely astonishing design, very friendly stuff that gave great customer service from the moment we stepped in the door to the moment we left when they had our umbrellas waiting to be picked up!
The sizzling beef was served on a hot classic Chinese rectangle plate, basically the Chinese version of a stone BBQ here, as well as that the duck, and even the fried rice was served so beautifully I was honestly surprised. Being a big fan of Chinese restaurants this was by far my favorite, definatly going to be my go to next time I'm in Takapuna!
Highly recommended to my fellow food lovers! :)
p.s
Good variety of drinks too!
Had dinner at Fortune Fountain last week. Food is divine, and services are good. I would say their Chinese food is very traditional and you can choose from a wide range. The owners are nice couple and always happy to spend some time with you, if you like, to share their ideas on food. They speak good English so there shouldn’t be any problem communicating if you get confused with the menu. I wouldn’t say it is cheap, as the price pays off the food and services. Attached the lobster sashimi, but this was the most expensive dish we had as the lobster itself is very expensive. The dish prices vary between 25 to 60 depends on what you like. Suggest going with a group of people so you can always share food and costs, the dishes are not small.
The Food was Devine, delicious and off good quality!i came all the way from south Auckland papakura and the Fiji Islands to have YUM CHAR here!we will surely be coming back here soon #YumChar
We had an excellent yum char experience today. A party of 6 @ $20 each. The service was prompt and friendly. The food was hot and well-flavoured. All of us enjoyed it. I have been there many times and recommend it.
This is a weekly haunt for my work colleagues and I. We look forward to our weekly yum cha lunch and fortune fountain do it extremely well. The decor is lush with ornate chandeliers. The service is friendly and the trolleys just keep coming. You're never sitting around to long for the next dish. Favourites of ours are the bbq pork, green bean, prawn coriander dumplings and the savory dumplings. A little more expensive than others but the surroundings and quality make it worth it. We spend approx 20ea for lunch including pots of tea and when we roll out the doors we are already looking forward to coming back the following week
I always have a great experience at Fortune Fountain. I'm usually there about once a fortnight for yumcha. Food is well priced and delicious! If you are going there for dinner, definitely try their lamb chops.
I've been there twice, one for yum-cha and the other for dinner. It was an amazing experience. The staff were nice and helpful. In the yum-cha session, the crayfish and BBQ pork were delicious! For dinner, the rack of lamb with honey pepper was absolutely great! Strongly recommend the dinner there!
it's one of the best places for yumcha! Located takapuna central easy to find.
Staff were very attentive and friendly ! Most spoke English which was very helpful
So delicious !
We are Takapuna locals and love good Chinese food having lived and worked in Hong Kong and Singapore plus lots of travel in Asia.
We have come to enjoy a meal or Yum Cha or takeaway dishes at Fortune Fountain every week or so. The staff at Fortune Fountain are very friendly and nice people, just ask for what you need, and the food ranges from good to very good Cantonese dishes. Yum Cha has developed from average when it first opened a year or two ago ,to now being a very good experience - importantly food comes around more rapidly than many other Yum Cha places on a weekend and the staff work hard to find a table when you arrive. Today's Shumai was some of the best we have tasted - very tender and succulent. I note that another reviewer complained a few months ago about no vinegar sauce with the Xiao long bao - in the many times we have had that dish only once has the waitress forgotten to also put vinegar sauce on the table - all solved by a polite reminder request.
These days Takapuna has many places to eat and this restaurant holds its own in good fashion with the multi ethnic competition.
We've been to Fortune Fountain on numerous occasions in the past for yum char and evening dining and have always enjoyed the food here. We had a Chinese banquet as part of our Wedding reception at Fortune Fountain this week. We had a total of 5 tables which took up the stretch of private rooms at one end of the restaurant; this was nice as we had our own "space" to mingle around in. Stella was very easy and helpful to deal with, as we had been in prior to taste the banquet menu (a whooping 11 course meal!). The food quality was great and well presented. There was so much food we even had leftovers for the guests to take home! For the selection and amount of food we had, we think that the price was rather reasonable for a banquet feed (approx. $100 for 2 people). The restaurant is well presented and have good facilities.
We've been here a few times for yum cha and it's really delicious.
Today we went at midday and were seated immediately and a great variety of dishes came quickly so it wasn't long before we had a range of favourites and couple of new things to try in front of us. I particularly enjoyed a tender, peppery beef spare ribs, steamed bbq pork buns, and a colourful jelly dessert.
Service was okay - a focus on efficiency, and I appreciated when, as we were winding up, we were brought one last dish we had wanted without waiting for it to come around. On the downside, we weren't served tea today, and the place is really expensive: $90 for two people, without ordering any of the pricier big meat dishes. I've had yum cha just as good for something closer to the $60-mark, which I would find reasonable.
I'd give them a 4 or 4.5 for food, but the rating is pulled down slightly by the cost which makes this a once-in-a-while treat rather than a regular weekend event.
Enjoyed Yum Char on Sundays many times, as is good. Typical Cantonese style and flavours. Management look after you once they recognise regular customer. Seems to be acceptable value for money, as you only know what the bill will be at the end, and it has never been shocking, even though on occasion our party ate heaps.
This restaurant never fails to please me! Their YumCha is second to none! The dumplings are addictive, the beans are sensational and the pork dishes would convert a vegetarian 😆! Its not overly flash but after sampling most Yum Cha restaurants in Auckland, I can categorically state it is the most fantastic value for money & the food is just wonderfully delicious! I salivate at the thought of my next visit ... which must happen soon!
Great Yum Cha, fresh and tasty. Just moved to Takapuna and glad I found this place. It's great service and cheap and the Resturant itself is new and clean
Yum cha again first time in 4-5 months. On that occasion they were busy and service suffered. This time it was barely 1/4 full. Good selection and service as we were passed the main 12-1.30pm lunch patrons. Best serving was the pork spare rib and prawn glut. rice roll (har cheung fun) were ok. Not cheap for yum cha but few options on the shore.
Me and my wife have been here about half a dozen times and it is always great. Excellent food, friendly service and nice and busy. It pays to book in the weekends if there is a few of you, otherwise for a couple it should be OK to turn up (that is from our experience anyway).
We're going again tomorrow.
Yum!
Deliciously cooked to order dishes and the crispy duck with pancakes Pekin style was to die for!
Some of the best Chinese cuisine we have had worldwide and a banquet not be missed.
This establishment has not been running under present management for long and is determined to produce excellence.
Shortly they will welcome on of the most renowned dim sun chefs from Hongkong.
A great place for Yum Char on the weekends, although it pays to book.
We've been to a few Yum Char places around Auckland with friends and the Fortune Fountain is our favourite!
Very yummy, good selection & variety, well priced, food comes around quickly! Excellent staff! Nice restaurant setup.
We've been at least a dozen or more times... and we're very happy customers each time we visit!
Wow! What a taste experience.
I had recently heard about Fortune Fountain from friends so decided to try it out.
Beautiful authentic decor, warm greeting from friendly staff & the food delicious .... Try the sizzling fillet beef.
At last a beautiful contemporary Chinese restaurant in Auckland!
At last a proper Yum Char place in Takapuna. So this review is written by a banana (half Cantonese, in NZ all my life, my Chinese granny was one of the best in the kitchen in Wellington ;-) So the first time we went, I took my 70 year old parent in-laws who had never been to Yum Char in their lives before - they totally embarrassed me by asking for forks (hee hee). But I'm glad to say they totally enjoyed the food and we even made them try chicken's feet. This restaurant was good quality, lots of variety (even in the dessert selection, which some Yum Char restaurants do not focus so much on). The staff were super friendly, the younger staff especially - probably because there was no language barrier cf. the older serving staff. The maitre d' could definitely learn how to smile and perhaps revise her wording to come across more friendly when she told us "you have one hour and then you give up your table", but don't let her scare you the food is great!! I know the restaurant is quite new so I'm sure the new owners are anxious that everything go smoothly for their customers, but it would make us more at ease if they didn't hover in the corners like the Chinese mafia, watching the every move of their staff ;-) Anyway, we'll be back - all our Pakeha friends are keen to join us. You always know it's a good Chinese restaurant when your husband is they only whitey in the room ;-) p.s love their large chandelier!! I would recommend booking if you go on a Saturday or Sunday from noon.
It was literally amaze balls.
The experience of the yum-cha that I ate was like re-invigorating myself after being hungover the night before.
It was like having a delicious saline IV drip that replenishes your soul but in the form of dumplings.
Fortune Fountain is the best Chinese restaurant I have ever experienced in New Zealand. I went to Yum Cha on Sunday and was blown away by the freshness and quality of their food. Their sticky rice was incredibly fresh and delicious.
The team who work there are very friendly, well presented and helpful. The carts came around regularly and I never had to wait for food to arrive.
Because Fortune Fountain is new, the aesthetic of the fitout is super Chinese, lots of red and some amazing little chandeliers scattered throughout... This makes it a clean and fun space to dine in.
I can't wait to go back - but the place was very busy already so I would definitely book ahead for next time.
This restaurant is very new to takapuna, I have been 3 times now since it has opened, and I can not fault the establishment.
They have the best roast pork I have tried so far at any yum char restaurants, they also do amazing steamed pork buns and Devine sweet and sour pork.
They have an extensive choice from their staff that come around, and also cater for vegetarians. (Try their green beans... AMAZE!)
Every time we have been in, it has been really busy and the word is getting around how awesome it really is.
great location in Takapuna, very nice food. one of the top choice over the shore.
Recently had a Wedding party there and everything was fantastic. The dishes were big and delicious. The service was excellent, with one waiter constantly looking after each table for topping up drinks and changing plates. The boss was very nice and accommodating and helped with all our special requests. Provided seat covers for all the chairs and matching table settings. Will definitely come back!
I had dim sum at your place just last week and everything was DELICIOUS!
I especially like your durian puff ! It was so light, creamy & fluffy!
