Food to die for. I was blown away by the courgettii - totally inspired. The rich tomato flavour of the sauce, hints of hidden herbs, the gorgeous combination of textures of the smooth pumpkin against the crisp corgettei and all bursting with freshness. This is food made with passion. I'll be back. Again and again.
Just had lunch here - shared the Portobello Benedict, Courgetti and Kimchi Bowl, between 3 people. Delicious hearty food and also good coffee. Loved it and would definitely come back again - recommend it to everyone!
My absolute favourite café in Auckland. Beautiful food, wonderful service, lovely relaxed atmosphere. Everyone feels so welcome and relaxed. What more could you ask from your local?
Was here with the wify and out 7 month old. We loved the food it was great. Oh the food came out fast too even tho they were busy, two thumbs up. I am a coffee drinker, there coffee was wonderful. We will definitely come back for seconds, thirds.
Solid place to go to . Enjoyed my meal. Shot bro. You gotta try this place out if you havent yet.
Great venue for Sunday breakfast. Staff very happy. Customers very happy. Good menu and lots of choice. Will be coming back
Food is so tasty and big portions! Come hungry for great coffee, atmosphere (outdoor seating) and food! Had the courgetti, Banh xeo and portobello Benedict. Can't wait to come back for the cacao crepes!
Love this place.... great food n really good service.
good food, value for money staff very friendly
Great service. Lovely outdoor seating for a beautiful sunny day. Great food
Most delicious breakfast we have had in a long time. Fantastic coffee and great service. Yummo
Amazing food. Absolutely loved it and will definitely be back 😀
Best berry smoothie i have ever had.... And i have had many both in N Z and overseas.
Delicious food and great service. Owner Elliot made it for me...
Hot cakes were super, as was the mushroom Benedict.
Lovely outside area.
The coffee was superb.
Listening to the beach boys.
A+ would trade again.
We really enjoyed our brunch at big sur, good coffee, very friendly service. I had the fried umpa which was really tasty and different, I added a second egg and my partner had the omelette which was a decent size and he enjoyed. Also had a huge scone. Nice people, lots of options for seating areas. Had a change table and high chair so would be great for families with kids.
It's the third time we came and loved this place. It has options for everyone including Vegan and Gluten-free. It's a lovely vegetarian cafe. We have tried the good morning granola (photo), big sur omelette, courgetti, portobello beni, French stroggy and they are all amazing 👏👏👏
Staff/service: 4/5
Venue: 4/5
Price/portion: 3.5/5
We decided to give it a try with since we have the Zomato gold. Both me and my husband ordered the portobello bene. At $19.50 each, the toast could be bigger as we left not feeling full from the meal.

I love this place! Best coffee, great food and super friendly staff. I usually go there with my baby, they have a good changing table and we always feel well looked after by the lovely lady :)
Had the fried upma and mushroom stroganoff, both were amazing. Great healthy and vegan options and friendly service. Love the sunny courtyard out back, too.
Just popped in for a meal while working in the area, I had coffee, french stroggy and an orange and date scone, everything was perfect, pleasant staff , quick service and very tasty meal. But what really amazed me was both the constant traffic of customers at 2-00 pm and also the extensive reading material they had, it's like a library bookshelf. Highly recommended and I will be back.
Service is always warm and welcoming at Big Sur. The courtyard is sunny and private and it's tough choosing which meal to order as they all sound delicious. Highly recommended.
Great food and coffee! New fave place !
Amazing local cafe, delicious food and coffee and the staff are so friendly! The scrambled eggs with seeded toast followed by the cheese and bacon scone heated with butter was delicious. Love the atmosphere, will be coming back :)
Lovely vegetarian cafe with some interesting items on the menu. I had the crepes which are also gluten free, would recommend for sure, it’s always a treat to be able to have gluten free crepes. There’s a peaceful courtyard out the back. Friendly staff and the food was served quickly.

Pretty good variety of vegan and vegetarian food. Prices are normal pricing for a cafe, but the muffins and etc on the stands at counter are over price and prettt boring. the vegan pancakes were delicious and the eggs bene was good and filling , it was so nice to have them on sourdough, and glad to see another cafe using free range. Ice coffee wasn’t the type of ice coffee you expect so be ware of that. Pretty good overall, would visit again.
Great food and great service, all staff members are friendly and the food from the kitchen is great! The cafe is clean and looks great as well! Would definitely come back.
What I ordered:
Flat White - 5/5
Poached Eggs on Sourdough - 5/5
Nothing much to complain about, only thing that comes to mind is a slightly dirty fork. When I informed the staff they were very apologetic and swapped it out straight away.
This place give me the ..."Oh yessss" feel.
Plenty of seats both inside and outside.
The interior deco look nice, calm and relaxing.
Service is great.
I personally enjoy my cuppachino and Portobello Benedict!
Great for 4 people (outdoor setting) and 2 people (inside).
They do have one large table (inside) good for 5 to 8 people max.
Highly recommended. ☺
Amazing experience. We tried Fried Umpa, Courgetti and Buckwheat pancake and it was absolutely stunning! So nice to have such fresh and unique favoured vegetarian meal ,which you definitely won't find anywhere in Auckland. I'll definitely come back for some more yummy vegan food in the future, my new favourite spot !♥
First things first, the service we received at our first visit to Big Sur this morning was brilliant.
The food was good, standard cafe fare with something for everyone on the menu - including gluten free and vegan options. Simple, beautifully presented and very tasty. We were lucky to arrive just in time to get a table before the Saturday morning rush.
Big Sur has a very relaxed vibe and is somewhere I could quite easily sit and read over a long, leisurely breakfast and endless pots of tea.
However, rumour has it that this much-loved vegetarian cafe is planning to add meat to the menu (um, why?!) so my partner and I decided to give them a go before this happens, after which we probably won't return. Because really - if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
At first I was skeptical that it's purely a vegetarian cafe. But the dishes turned out really delicious. I tried the portobello Benedict. Will be back to try the other options for sure !
I am a regular at Big Sur and Elliot and the team there run a great Cafe. Coffee is supreme coffee; it is one of the best coffee spots in AKL and their scrambled eggs are always on point. Highly recommended!
Beautiful vegetarian cafe- I didn't even realise it was vegetarian until looking at the menu so was a pleasant surprise. The coffee is also great, there's heaps of brunch options, and the staff are amazing. Definitely coming back.
Came by early Friday morning for a pre-work breakfast treat. Was amazed by the beautiful decor and neatly placed bookshelf. We looked through the menu, then only to come to a realisation that this place is Vegetarian!
Who knew breakfast without bacon could be so satisfying!!
It was so refreshing to see something on the menu and wondering how it would taste like, because they were all so unique!!
We ordered the Courgetti and the Fried Upma which were absolutely a surprise for my tastebuds, i.e. DELICIOUS. We shared all our meals which helped because they were very heavy to be eaten by one person. (or at least for me)
We also had the portobello benedict which was the most underwhelming out of all we had.
Service was all stars, slightly on the slower side but I did not mind sitting with my perfect cup of dry cappuccino while chatting to my friends.
I really like this place as it provides an vegetarian alternative to Kokako in Grey Lynn. I enjoyed the Upma. It was very well seasoned; tasty and perfectly portioned. I also love their outdoor area at the back - so peaceful.
The dishes are absolutely delish and wholesome and the different components work well together. Case in point: the Fried Upma fritters. The Kasundi is a touch hot but it also comes with a raita for a cooling effect. The fritters, served with a (perfectly) poached egg, makes for a very substantial and filling vegetarian meal.
The decor is thoughtfully tasteful and minimal. Bring your literary and artistic friends here.
Came last Saturday, ordered fried chicken brioche and the mixed berries bagel. The fried chicken was very juicy and tasty. Highly recommended for all meat lovers. The staffs and atmosphere here was great too.
Monday afternoon bite.
Really lovely staff and a cosy cafe.
This is great for dogs.
Vegan and vegetarian friendly.
They have an indoor and outdoor seating arrangement.
There were seats available on arrival. Came at 1.30pm asked the staff if the kitchen was still open, it was. Had the kimchi bowl and the El grande taco with a side of kids eggs. The kimchi bowl was tasty food with a great needed kick. The tacos were not as exciting, ingredients were lovely and fresh however it felt like it was missing a spicy tangy salsa, it also fell apart when attempting to pick it up.
The staff were kind, hospitable and happy to be at work.
Overall I would most definitely come back to try something new.
Such a beautiful little shop! delicious big breakfast with my taste coffee ☕️,very friendly staff. Highly recommended to all.
It is lovely cafe. The food very nice and coffee is great!
Super yummy vegan options and SUPER kind and welcoming staff ❤️ x
Very nice staff and gooood food, yummy and delicious 😋 coffee is nice as well~~ really worth to go and have a try
Ordered salmon Benedict and it was absolutely delicious. Good portion and it’s fairly priced. I am very pleased that they have more options now as I am a huge meat lover. Staffs are very nice and coffee was good too. Will definitely come back. Highly recommended!
Important info about Big Sur is the menu is no longer exclusively vegetarian / vegan. They evidently re-opened a few days ago with a carnivore-friendly menu (and with none of their former dishes). And at time of writing this, they're yet to update their website to reflect their more mainstream direction. Anyway, the fried chicken was delicious.
What a nice wee spot, with a courtyard out back. Delicious coffee. I had the corn fritters with a side of bacon.. and really enjoyed it
Great, moderately priced, healthy and vegetarian fare with friendly service and terrific coffee.
A really good spot for a brunch that's a little bit different and a little bit healthy. Vegetarian and, yes, even vegan options for the plant-based people in your life. A surprisingly multi-ethnic menu, with vegetarian twists on old favourites (a yummy portobello mushroom benedict) through to Indian Upma topped with a perfectly poached egg, Vietnamese crispy rice pancake Banh Xeo, Bean Tacos and more!
Make sure you ask for an extra shot in your coffee, they make them a bit lightweight for the serious coffee drinker. ☕
Amazing Food and Fabulous Service: This place is must visit for ones who like vegan or vegetarian food. I am thrilled by the food I had there and will definitely going to continue my visits there. I love this place :)
This is my new favourite cafe. The owners are so nice and the food is absolutely 5 out of 5. Every time I come, it never disappoints. I stopped in during lockdown to pick up some sandwiches and rembered how much I missed them. So glad to be able to go back whenever we like now. Thank you for making such yummy food :-)
Excellent coffee and service here. I always get given a small cake with it.
Unassuming and awesome, this little cafe is a hidden gem in Grey Lynn serving the best Supreme coffee, limited but well catered counter food and what looks to be more substantial items ordered by others off the menu. Thank you to the lovely folk at Big Sur for making my month in Grey Lynn a treat.
Really enjoyed the vegan steak and mushroom pie! Very fresh. Also appreciated the quiet space out the back where we could catch up with old friends away from any loud music or traffic noise.
