Excellent coffee every time, the Govenor does not disappoint! I usually try the breakfast menu which is great, but suggest to change around each season, to look forward to something new and perhaps a few more cabinet takeaway items to go with the takeaway coffee.
The eggs benedict was beautiful but the marinated salmon with beetroots was out of this world!!! I highly recommend this place! Thank you Steve for always making such mouth watering great food!! Antonio & Marleni :)
I really like this cafe. I ordered the Breakfast Plate which consisted of a yummy chia pudding and toast with avo and a poached egg. Loved the presentation and the food was so delicious!
Another visit to a favorite local cafe. Fabulous coffee and wonderfully fresh food ingredients dished up with attentive table service. Ample portions for big appetites.

Sat outside on a sunny Sunday with our dog and had 2 mochas and 1 ginger slice.
Positives - great atmosphere, lovely decor, happy staff, accommodating to dogs outside, the cooked plates next to us smelt delicious.
Negatives - $17.50 for 2 drinks and a slice!!!!! Wow, we will head back to our hood in Parnell where it’s a tad cheaper.
We highly recommend this cafe! It is family run and family friendly. Has excellent service and food. A great place for breakfast with a few twists to the regular items on offer including a egg dish with curry flavourings- was delish...
We really enjoyed our brunch at The Governor list Sunday. It was super busy but the staff attended us quickly and the food didn't take long to come out at all. I ordered the Avocado which was delicious, although would of loved two poached eggs as it wasn't that filing! My partner ordered the Indian Eggs which was delicious but again not that big. The cafe is modern and very clean. Will definitely be back!

Super friendly and Family Operated. Lovely fresh food. Great coffee - love their frappuccinos - recommend during the hot summer days. Fresh modern decor. Doggy friendly...Can sit outside with your dog.
Add Toulouse sausage to your open omelette. You won’t regret it. Omelette was perfectly cooked and flavour-balanced.
Salmon was fresh and beautifully presented. Ask for the almond butter for your toast!

Came here as Dear Jervois couldn't accommodate our party of 3 adults and one child. Was a pleasant experience and would come back. Good coffee, cute little chocolate spoon with the kids fluffy which went down a treat. Small kids menu and let us use a side for a kids meal. My mushrooms were good, do add a protein if you eat meat as it complements it well. My companions had the Japanese salmon and the steak sandwich, both also good. Not anything super amazing but decent food that can stand with the upmarket Auckland cafe scene.
Always great service & excellent food so we keep coming back. I've never had a bad experience here. Cakes and slices are to die for! Lemon cheesecake slice ❤️

A bit sophisticated, a bit of individuality seen from the menu. The governor really captured me by its simplicity and freshness.
The cozy decor easily recalled me of other Cafes in Herne Bay Area such as Zus&Zo. You will enjoy as much as i do sitting on the comfy sofa that put out like a long bench while taking a glance of the view on the Jervois street.
For dinner, we would like to try a few plates to share. Surprisedly we were offered free cheese platter to try:) Then came the drink to pair the cheese on the right time. It was quite a pleasure to start.
Bread came in three different types. All sourdough style. Impressive! With Matakana olive oil to soak in was such a soothing tip. Well, we always try to support the local artisan food products. Thanks the Governor thinks the same.
The focaccia was nicely toasted with anchovy and sliced shallots. We shouldn't have ordered it if we knew there would be bread basket:) However it was quite enjoyable. Then the chicken liver parfait hit our tastebuds in a beautiful way. Red wine jelly on top brought out all the nice sweet flavour, mousse-like chicken liver parfait could even go with the focaccia, or anything. Last dish was the cockle soup, if I may say. Fresh seasonal cockle lay out full texture, then the chewy shrimp, savoury pancetta all displayed in this big soup bowl. Only wish we could hold this by the shore, eating it up with the sea breeze. Hmm, what a call for summer time to come.
As for dessert, the honey cake came up two madeleines with blue cheese. If this could be right out from the oven, the result would be a completely different thing. I did sense the Madeleine was a bit dry, apparently it was put outside for quite a while. What a pity.
Overall we still feel to come back for breakfast or a brunch, to witness more. What comfort me here in New Zealand is that any Cafe, bistro, eatery is well qualified. You can't find one going too wrong. So feel courageous to try something new like the Governor. You will meet your own favourite.
Definite highlight on the Herne Bay foodie strip. Perfect if you like minimalistic Scandinavian style wooden interiors and eclectic but exciting dishes. Not the spot if you want to drop in for a quick traditional cafe style lunch, this venue has more of a relaxed upmarket vibe that endears itself to the more mature demographic. It covers lunch and dinner unlike most of the other cafes nearby.
Escaped from the madness of Ponsonby to the lovely little strip we call Herne Bay. Tucked on a street corner, you will find 'The Governor' and boy oh boy you will be happy that you did! Swedish decor and vibe inside but a very kiwi fusion menu on offer. The service is stock standard and sometimes that exactly what I want ☺️. I will say that if you don't like eggs or fish - this ain't the cafe for you! Beautifully presented meals and great flavours. I will say the price range is very 'central Auckland' 😉. Otherwise I loved this place, no complaints at all!
We were a group of 3 for dinner and we had their voucher for free glass of wine each with mains. We also had complimentary cheese and bread. It was divine. Beef ribs was a big winner and good value for money given the massive serving. The cockle prawn soup thing was delicious as well. Satisfying but not too heavy. Roast chicken was also a very generous helping. Overall good service and good value for money. 😊
Rainy Sunday's call for Ladies Brunches! We had all heard good things about The Governor so this relatively recent establishment was on our radar. Luckily we bet the rush of post gym active-wearing ladies. Coffee was perfect and fast and the service was very friendly. Poached eggs with ham off the bone (hollandaise on the side) was delicious and very, very filling...wholemeal sourdough was a great default as usually you have to specify. Scrambled eggs on toast with "slow" tomatoes looked great too. I had some serious food envy of another table's order of Imperial eggs (I'll get that next time). Also don't discount the cabinet food before you order - pretzel bacon and egg bun looked delish. Great value for money. Warning - don't wear stripes...you'll blend in too much with the couches and wait staff...
Great, fresh, good quality food! I had the Green eggs and cannot fault a thing! The iced chocolate was superb, and not sickening sweet like some can be. Friendly staff, who know what they're doing, and do it well. Highly recommended!
