Tucked away down a little Kingsland driveway is Mondays, a wholefoods eatery (& yoga studio!) who prides themselves on serving deliciously rustic food & a mouthwatering selection of gluten and sugar free cakes, cheesecakes, truffles and tarts. My best friend and I spent a lovely Easter Sunday enjoying lunch here for the first time, and absolutely loved our experience!
We sat in the outdoor seating and started with drinks. My best friend ordered a Fat Black Coffee with Lewis Road Creamery butter & coconut oil blend while I ordered a Banana Chocolate Fudge Smoothie. As fatty as that sounds, believe it or not, the smoothie is incredibly healthy, consisting of cacao, banana, cacao nibs, dates, maca, house-made nut milk, vanilla bean, banana chips & sea salt flakes! Definitely a unique, refreshing take on a chocolate smoothie. I love how innovative they are in creating such an indulgent full of healthy goodness. The smoothie was thick, rich, and sweet but not overwhelmingly so. It was absolutely massive and I struggled to finish the whole thing even after we’d finished our lunch.
For lunch, I ordered a Papaya Boat filled with Paleo Granola. It is half a fresh papaya filled with paleo coconut, vanilla & roasted almond granola & chia berry coulis. I chose for mine to be served with natural yoghurt. This tasted very raw & healthy, and it felt very unique to be using a fruit as a bowl. All the ingredients blended well together and provided a great mix of crunchy & soft textures. It’s not extremely flavoursome, but rather sweet & fruity in a very natural, fresh, balanced way.
My best friend ordered a Rustic Ham Sourdough Toastie – free range honey cured ham, swiss cheese, sauerkraut, housemade kasundi relish, dijon mustard, drizzled with olive oil, sprinkled with cracked pepper & sea salt, and served with garden greens& lemony cashew aioli. I got to try this when we swapped our dishes later on, and this was absolutely delicious! I liked it because it was warm compared to my cold, natural papaya boat.😛 I loved the crispy toasted sandwich with ham & cheese, and I especially loved the salad – the mix of olive oil, cracked pepper & sea salt was incredibly tasty.
We finished with a little dessert – Spicy Chai Creme Cake. Because this was in a cabinet rather than on the menu, unfortunately we didn’t know the exact ingredients that went into it. All we know is that the flavour was absolutely perfect. Creamy, sweet but spicy, this chai-flavoured cake was very unique and irresistable. It was made even better with the blend of the cream on top and natural, crunchy base. Like the smoothie, we struggled to finish this – probably because it was just so satisfying, filling & wholesome!
Overall, we loved our first experience at Mondays. I’d seen photos of their amazing, fresh food plenty of times and being excited to experience it for myself, I definitely wasn’t disappointed. The food is fresh, delicious, nutritious and authentic, leaving you feeling full & satisfied, but light & healthy.
What’s more is that Mondays also has a yoga studio! They host yoga classes such as Zen Your Heart Out, Breath Control, Flow & Restore, Stillness Yin, and Restore by Candlelight (this one is super intriguing to me – I love candles!). All the information can be found on their website.
