Great food, friendly staff, didn't rush us out when they wanted to close. Will definitely go back again!
My wife and I visited the Tomo Restaurant for the first time on Valentines Day. Not knowing what to expect, we were pleasantly suprised by the friendly, and fast service. The food was delicious, and at a very reasonable price. I would have no hesitation in recommending the Tomo Restaurant to anyone wanting excellent food at a very reasonable price. Will be back again soon.
Tomo is a decent Japanese restaurant for dinner with fast service and friendly staff who try to help with your meal selection if requested. There was plenty of seating when we were there and usually when I glance in walking past. The website menu didn’t match the restaurant menu so I was a bit disappointed when I discovered that there was no Yakitori. The price mostly matches the quality of food but I thought could have been better. Spinach seemed like it was frozen spinach from the supermarket. Menu could be clearer at describing the dishes.
We ordered soft shell crabs, donburi prawn and yakisoba. Everything is so delightful and good! Even the salad on the side is really yum, my husband doesn’t eat veges but he was able to finish it and raves about the dressing. The staff, Mana, is very pleasant and accommodating. Very hardworking and prompt in service. Really glad to have been in this place. We’ll definitely be back! 🥰
This place has never dissapointed me. Been coming for close to 5 years. Jah jah ramen is the bomb, service is always fast and lovely and very reasonable

Our go to Japanese restaurant. Great price, good portions and really fresh! Always polite, good service and food is presented beautifully. Bonus that it’s BYO too so great groups of friends or a date night. Love love love
Absolutely!!! Love you Tomo. Delicious dinner boxes and all starters 😍 favourite Japanese. They’re accustomed to a BYO and a rowdy Thurs - Sat. Food comes quickly and is large and fresh. Sashimi can’t be missed.
Food is so fresh and delicious! We had our company christmas function at here last night. The enviroment and service is excellent! Good place for function and family. Would recommend to all our B&B guests!

I'd visit this place again and again ! i had my first Japanese food from here! The presentation of food was more than awesome ! I ordered adgashi tofu , soft she'll crab and daigaku imo , not only the presentation. Was good but the food was tasty as well ! On my recommend list !
🍣🍱 Tomo Japanese is so yum! Their sushi is always rolled fresh and usually really tasty. They are really generous on the fillings inside the sushi also. I really like their summer rolls also, lots of avocado and the sweet nutty sauce that comes with it is great!
Only critique would be the most recent time I was there the sushi and summer rolls were rolled really loosely and fell apart. Hopefully this was a one-off on a busy Saturday! Also once I had ordered 45 pieces for catering and they forgot to roll them in advance but they were so lovely and apologetic and gave us extra sushi!
Love the Bento Box! Its really good and there is plenty of seating area.
The service is fast and the atmosphere is good.
Really good for groups.
Been here 3 times already within a month and I'd like to keep coming back. Not quite sure why it's not rated higher than it is. Sushis are not my cuppa tea but I liked them better here! Their tempuras and Ramens are a must have. Also are the Karrage and Katsu chicken!
I've been to this restaurant numerous times over the years and would recommend it for anyone who enjoys Japanese food. Reasonably priced and friendly staff. BYO is always a good option too.
Mostly people who live in the area come here. Good, solid Japanese restaurant - inexpensive and friendly. Certainly more luxurious places along the road - but when you need a quick dinner, it ticks all the boxes. So.... looking for craft beer and a smug hipster crowd, you'll have to mooch elsewhere.
Good place for authentic and quick service. If you want to have a good quick Japanese lunch then this is the place. Price is ok for size and service is very good. They also have sushi box and tempura to buy to takeaway from the cabinet
They provide pretty nice and cozy service, our realstate agency hold important meetings every year in this Japanese restaurant, we have tried so many different Japanese restaurants, while, I still prefer their low reasonable charging fee, the quantity serving portion is quite bigger compare with any other ones, quite valuable. I trust their loyalty, we have been their regular customers for almost ten years. I love their SUSHI, big size and fresh yummy dishes! Especially, the mouthwatering salom sushi provides big portioned fresh salom which I enjoyed for so many years. For business meeting ,I literally strongly recommend it is a high value place to enjoy.
Perfectly acceptable Japanese restaurant in the heart of Three Lamps. Kitted out in a sort of lunch mode, but when we arrived it was empty. My prawn katsu donburi was pretty good and all the dishes I saw looked excellent quality. As we sat the place filled up quickly with other unqualified diners, and even has a small takeaway cabinet section. Overall relaxing lunch business vibe.
Excellent food. Excellent customer service and really great for byos. They are super accomodating even if you have a large group of rowdy people.
Great food, atmosphere and staff. Always have a good night here, the food is always cooked really well, never had an issue with it, been here many Times and always leave wanting more.
This restaurant would definitely be my the most favorite one ever!! Strongly recommend the lunch box and Yakisoba, especially the tempura, which is crispy outside and juicy inside(⁎⁍̴̛ᴗ⁍̴̛⁎)
This is yummy food with a very good price, the staff is very friendlyʕ •ᴥ•ʔ
Pretty decent, the food was good but I ordered chicken katsu with my dinner and they gave me chicken teriyaki but it wasn't a big deal because I love them both lol.
The service was a little slow but I think the girl was relatively new so no grudges held there.
Pretty happy with everything here :)
Offers pre packed sushi at the front along with warm items such as prawn skewers. Restaurant behind that, which is a bit on the dark side. Today's sampling was a lunch box to takeaway. Teriyaki salmon with salad, rice, tempura veg and chicken katsu. Teriyaki was good, nice size piece of salmon and well cooked, slightly crispy on outside, sauce was good also, not drowning in it and not too sweet. Tempura was nice and light. Good japanese, no complaints
Food and service was good but the decor was outdated. Portion sizes are reasonable and it's very reasonably priced. The chicken katsu was a big hit. I liked how it came out in two parts; the karage and sushi first followed by the main dish of chicken katsu, rice and salad with a lovely dressing. The presentation was very precise and it all was very tasty. A great place to have a cheap, health-conscious meal!
Tomo is like a good old reliable booty call - You always know what you're going to get!
The food is always consistent, tasty and pretty quick to come out and for a quick "hit it and quit it" - Tomo's a good bitch!
The $20 bento box is good value - What man doesn't like a good box at lunch...
I love tomo Japanese for cheap & healthy Japanese food! They have a big range of options on their menu, and they always have great salads & sushi to take away. I had the chicken donburi with extra salad, and my partner had the combination lunch box. We loved both meals, only thing we could find fault with was the tempura in the lunchbox - it was pretty greasy. Overall a great choice for lunch in Ponsonby!

Curry rice is normal, nothing really special you probably cook better if you put more effort in making curry. sushi bentou was quite nice, unadon is quite good. tempera is good too crunchy but can't eat too much coz its a bit gresy,
Service is really good. Ramen is not good. soup are quite blend. onigiri, I would say the onigiri would be the best out of all.
In for a takeaway lunch, great freshly made chicken salad, friendly service and really good value for money. Funny watching the amount of people coming out of St Pierres down the road given how good the counter sushi at Tomo looked. Will be back!
Very very good service
, authentic Japanese from what I could hear from the kitchen
Have been searching for a good ramen place and would definitely like to try all of theirs :PThey fill your water and are very attentive Tonkotsu broth needed more depth, medium spice is perfect for me
Bento box is definitely on a higher level than any I've had
Tempura was light and extremely tasty
but did have excess batter attached to it but that just added to the crunch :P I also had the green tea dessert which was AHmazing, a good portion easily able to share it unfortunately my phone died before I could take a pic, I used the bf's phone though so hopefully he still has it and I shall upload it if I do. Would definitely go again ! 8.5/10
I had the pork katsu with chicken curry (comes with rice, salad and miso).
It was amazing. Everything was tasty and fresh, and well presented. The pork was well cooked, nice and moist. The chicken was nicely done.
Will definitely be returning!
Have had takeaway from Tomo a number of times now and never once been disappointed.
We dined in for the first time late February. Staff were relaxed and the atmosphere was likewise. Food is very well priced and tasted great. Drank a lovely sweet bottle of sake (and the rest) and left feeling very satisfied. Thanks
I had the salmon teriyaki lunch box, which was delicious. Salmon was tender and teriyaki sauce great. The highlight for me though, were the tempura vegetables - light, crunchy-crisp exterior, with veges inside beautifully cooked. Also I loved the dressing on the salads.
My only suggestion for improvement would be that if you've got people dining inside, maybe keep the extra spot lights on for these diners (even if the clock does click over past 2pm).
My fault though I guess, as I turned up at 1:45pm... but even so, it made me eat too fast when they turned those lights off at 2pm, that I got a bit of indigestion! (Presumably the lights went off to discourage new diners from thinking they could still come in for lunch service, as opposed to giving me the hurry-up to finish... but I still felt very hurried.)
That said, I enjoyed the food very much. Service was friendly and efficient. The menu is extensive, and I was quite impressed with the range on offer (they had some nice-looking takeaway sushi out the front too).
Four of us had dinner at Tomo's last night. It was very busy, fully booked. We were served immediately, and requested that we would like a little space between each serving - they were happy to oblige. The meal was amazing - very fresh and very nicely presented. We would have liked to try their sticky date and also their banana puddings but we were told that they were very busy. We really didn't need the dessert so we gave it a miss. We had vouchers, and as we were paying the extra for our drinks, two girls were promptly taken to our table we had just vacated. This obviously is a very popular Japanese restaurant and we will go back . . . hopefully we will get a quieter night and a chance to try their dessert !
Went to Tomo on 24 May 2012 with a voucher for a set meal for two people. The meals were divine - the sashimi was fresh, the flavours of our teriyaki chicken and chicken katsu mains were outstanding, and the portions were generous. Loved the presentation of the food. The service was good (one waitress in particular was lovely - she's a young lady who wears spectacles and has long hair). My friend also tried the vegetable tempura and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Highly recommended :)
Went here for a family dinner with a voucher.
Nice clean restaurant with very friendly and helpful staff! Meals came out in good time and were very well presented and big - great value for money!
Free wifi in the area too.
You should visit this restaurant.
Great for a quick lunch, they just rolled out a new menu
Excellent food at a fair price served graciously with a gentle touch of Japanese interpretation. As well as being a sit-down restaurant, they also have a good range of take away sushi.
I have enjoyed Tomo's hospitality for many years and highly recommend them if you are looking for a good value Japanese dining experience.
Their bento boxes are generously portioned and enough for two if you’ve got smaller appetites. The sashimi is great quality too. This is a common spot for BYOs and I’ve enjoyed some fantastic times here thanks to the friendly staff. Overall, a great local Japanese spot in a pinch.
I have been here many times recently and have had a few of the different ramen as well as some of the items they sell at the front. The service had always been good and the food is super tasty. If you like ramen or want to try it I would recommend this place.
Lovely service and delicious food! Don't put the takoyaki straight in your mouth like I did when it hit the table, I burnt my mouth lol obviously my fault. I had the chicken katsu on rice with sauce delish and the Rose which I got a generous portion off. Made me miss my travels in Japan!
Good Japanese Restaurant really good meals, big plates and reasonable price. unfortunately staff deaf to customer's wishes however I believe they can do it better
Tonkotsu ramen is a popular type of ramen featuring a hearty broth made by boiling down pork bones. Tonkotsu ramen has a pronounced smell compared to other ramen varieties, which people either like or don't. Tonkotsu broth takes many forms; it can be light and smooth, or thick and rich enough to stick to the spoon. There are also shoyu-tonkotsu and shio-tonkotsu soups, which combine soy sauce and salty flavors with the tonkotsu.
Great food. Can’t recommend more highly. Lovely staff and service too
Always dependable and good value. And the end of day sushi specials make an easy meal on the way home.
Good atmosphere and lovely staff. Can't go wrong with a teriyaki beef set. :)
This is my favorite Japanese in Auckland. Have been going for over 10 years and has never failed me once. Love the Jah Jah. Keep up the good work
Best teriyaki chicken udon I've had in Auckland, the broth is so so good
One of the best sashimi in Auckland. Great service but on the pricier side of the meals
Always fresh and yummy. Sorry for my loud twins & daughter but thank you for being accommodating 😊
Awesome yakatori. Great for an easy bite to eat after work on a Friday washed down with a Japanese beer!!
Great food and service. Good BYO option also.
