I went to this place around 12 p.m. on Sunday. The place is well decorated, sittings are normally for up to 4 people.
Atmosphere: 4/4
No on-site parking, which is pretty standard for a restaurant in city central. Compared to the price range of the dishes offered at this place, the atmosphere is really Japanese restaurant like.
Food: 4/4
** I had their Chicken Miso Cutlet ($14). I have noticed most people order Benton though.
Service: 3.8/4
Reasonable fast service, however you will need to be proactive about ordering your own food.
Cost: 4/4
Really affordable. Heard their dinner menu is pricey. For lunch, highly recommend.
Received a grab one voucher from a friend for this restaurant and it was so yum 😍 the seared salmon and beef tataki were a definite highlight. The voucher is such good value for money and between two people you can order nearly everything on the set menu!
Raymen is cheap only 10 bucks.Tastes not bad not good and worth the price. When my friend and I sat there was quiet and lunch menu finished at around 2.30
This place is great! The ambience is a bit weird, as it's inside a mall of sorts, but other factors make up for it!
Went there for a BYO catchup with a friens and got A LOT of small plates. The sushi was fresh and delicious, the seaweed salad was huge compared to what you usually get and had a variety of seaweeds in it, deep fried gyoza were AMAZING. Lots of vegetarian options.
Very reasonably priced too, we were in for 2 hours eating our way through everything and the bill only came to $60 for 2 people.
Will visit again.

Decently priced for lunch menu, about $15 for a set menu. Dont think we would pay for the dinner price. Taste ok for the lunch price and portion is good. Service could be improved, hard to get waitress attention.
Really nice interior and ambiance. Prices are reasonable and portions sizes are okay. The service is not bad. I ordered a chicken donburi with miso soup. The chicken was delicious.
Such a pretty place and gives off a great authentic vibe. Don’t get me started on the food because it lives up to its standards, if not above. Service is great and the prices are affordable to midrange. A great place for lunch or dinner if you’re keen on some Japanese goodness.
Lunch Bento Box $15 with 3 dishes out of 15 choices. Chicken torikara, egg omelet, stream egg with prawns, takoyaki were our favourite. Good prices and very delicious. Place was clean and comfortable. Friendly staff.
Love this place!!! Went to use a Groupon voucher and was happily surprised 🌼 Food was great, atmosphere was lovely and loved the ambience of the place. Will definitely go back 🎋
Okay woah! The price is sooo cheaaapp, and so incongruous with the high quality food, like whaat?
The quantity and quality is unreal, and compound that with such an amazing price range, my poor ass was shook. Seriously it's such a nice place to just eat some good quality japanese food and chat with your friends; the ambience is very cool and chill; dim lights but with a certain vitality that transports you to a little authentic japanese bar shack in Kyoto or Tokyo or something.
The only thing to note is the fact that I tried to come here again but I couldn't find it, but honesty that's probably on me and my inability to follow directions :3
Amazing food, good prices and lovely atmosphere. Had a great meal at Ryo. Would definitely recommend and will be returning again. Salmon and avocado Sushi roll for $10. Also have a range of desserts. Food served promptly and friendly service.
4 adults ate here. A pre concert meal. The service was fast, the waitress was really courteous and the food was delicious. The prices were on the high side for a quick bite. First time here, we would definitely return. 👍🏻👍🏻
Saw this place on the Hungry Panda app so I decided to give it a try. Preparation was super fast!
Food is delicious and it’s really well-priced, only $7.50 for beef tataki.
Will have to dine in next time to get the full experience.
I been to this restaurant for late dinner 9 pm on last night. Food was good and quick. Nice sake there. We order big bottle of sake and we couldn’t finish it, so I ask stuff if we can keep our sake and come back to finish on next week. The stuff very polite and let us keep the sake at the restaurant. I will go back again for good food and finish my drink!!
Went for lunch today and it was pretty nice. The staff was really nice, and they had really cool curtained booths, plus the place was really clean.
We ordered a kitsune udon and chicken katsu, beef tataki, and tuna and avocado roll. The udon was okay, chicken was really crispy and really good! The tataki and the tuna roll were nice as well.
Will definitely come back.
Have been here twice now, the customer service is always lovely. The table for 2 are a booth with curtains which creates a nice little spot for private dining.
You can take your time with browsing the menu and then press the button when you’re ready to order. Tonights order consisted of complimentary edamame, potato cakes, salmon avo sushi, grilled teriyaki chicken skewers and chicken miso katsu.
Started with some complimentary tea while waiting, were served some edamame and then all the food came out almost at once. Fresh hot and looking soooo delicious.
The katsu was crispy and tender, the potato cakes were so good! -crispy, a little bit sweet and cheesy in the centre so yum! The salmon sushi was refreshing in comparison to the fried plates we had ordered.
Totally forgot about the teriyaki chicken skewers which came out after our plates were cleared and we were ready to leave! They were hot, juicy and tender more of a grilled flavour than teriyaki though.
Plenty of small plates didn’t look like they’d be satisfying but I have left feeling more than full!
Food is nice and presentable, as seen in the photos,
Food: 4.0 - nice and superb
Ambiance: 4.0 - soft music
Service: 4.0 - the staff are accomodating
Total Experience: 4.0 - will recommend to friends and family.
It’s our first time dine out in RYO and it’s a lovely experience. The decor and service is good. The food is good with large portions. We ordered a large Sashimi platter which is fresh, even though the tuna and snapper are obviously not the best cuts. And the presentation of the platter is pretty average. But with the price, it is a good valued meal. We had some grilled dishes, sushi, dumplings, seaweed salads and hot house sake and hot plum wine too. A good valued, satisfied meal. We had 4 adults and 2 children and everyone went home with full stomach. At the end we couldn’t finish everything. So we had to take away 2 sushi dishes.
Always wanted to try this restaurant. Finally get to try it.
Love the decoration of the restaurant. Very cute and also clean. Gave me a really good impression of the restaurant. Staffs are really friendly. Welcoming and approachable.
Portion of the food is just nice for me.
I had the chicken cutlet curry. It's nice. I like it however I think the amount of slices of chicken given were a bit little for the amount I paid. Personally that's just my opinion. But don't get me wrong, food there is delicious. So viewers, give it a try. :)
I was told that my friends enjoyed the bento lunch so bento lunch is definitely a next things for me to try when I head back for more food at Ryo 😁
Environment: Very Good. Classic Japanese style restaurant/Izakaya. There are some compartments and you don't need to wait for seats at midday.
Service: Good. The staff is friendly and easy to talk. The staff introduced "Lunch special" when we hesitated outside. The waitress came within 10 seconds after we pressed the bell.
Price: Acceptable. They have $10 lunch special meals, like teryaki chicken don. Other meals, on average, costing $15+ per person.
Location: It is not very easy to find. It could have a guide or sign on Queen street if possible.
Conclusion: It's a nice and quiet place to enjoy lunch. $10 lunch special meals only have 4 or 5 choices and I think they can have more xD. This restaurant/Izakaya is worthy of first try.
The interior, designed spaciously with the dim lighting, lifts up the whole dining experience. We got the $10 lunch meal that was on special and to my surprise, I didn't expect something fancy like this for $10. Even though the meal took a bit long, the taste didn't disappoint. The egg was sweet and salty, but if you eat it with the rice and pickles, it comes together pretty well. The only disappointment was the texture of the tempura shrimps as it was very soggy - no chewing was needed. But I guess that's enough for a $10 meal. The service was pretty good though.
Taste - 8/10
Quality - 4/10
Size - 7/10
Service - 7/10
Price - 8/10
I don't know why this place is not above 4, best find in Auckland in recent years as a Japanese food fan!the wanyu beef got pot is the best, pretty original taste but I like it, we had sukiyaki pot, grilled chicken , sashimi and beef tataki, fresh is the key, we were very satisfied
A dinner at Ryo. We started with Tako wasabi (octopus) & beef Tataki, followed by prawn tempura & avocado roll, Kaisen Don (Sashimi on sushi rice). Food & sake were lovely & we wanted more - Yaki soba - with sesame & green tea ice-creams to finish our big meal. (Food - 3.5/5; Service - 4/5; Ambience - 4/5)
Went here alone for lunch. The place is hidden out of sight, but its quite a good find once you locate it (above St. Pierre's Sushi, Queen St). Nice warm and cozy place on the busy queen st with a friendly staff. I called for Chicken Cutlet Curry on Rice with Miso soup (not cuz I'm an Indian :P). The food was hygienic, tasty and the dishes were very well priced, not too steep. I would surely visit here again when hungry in the vicinity.
Highly recommend the dinner bentos - available from Monday - Thursday with prices from ~$18 - 30. There are two sections for these - hotpot style ( heated on a gas burner in front of you - seafood, sukiyaki beef, gyoza dumpling and more) and donburi ( something on rice - grilled fish of several types, katsu and others) style. There are many options for both, you're sure to find something to your taste. I got sanma (grilled fish) bento which was delicious with yummy sides including agedashi tofu. The sukiyaki hot pot was even better and had generous amounts of sashimi and amazing chicken rice bowl. These bentos are actually very unusual in that I have barely ever seen these options in Auckland! More authentic Japanese than many, many places :) I love this place, check it out!
First time I have been here.
For start very polite and nice.
Foods are super cheap .they have designed and set it up pretty good.
As couple you can have your own private table with covered certain.
Food cooked very well and tasty too.
You do not need to with too long for you food eather.
Nice selection of Japanese wine and beers if you like Japanese liqueurs .
Must recommended.
Nice environment. Great food for value! Having a private room is best for parties and gatherings! The chawamushi steam egg in a cup is a delight!
The. Best Japanese restaurant in Auckland ! ! Very delightful experience >~
Went here with a friend for the $10 lunchbox special. Where can you get $10 Japanese Lunch in the city these days?? The food was generous in portion and the restaurant is gorgeous- love the semi private booths! The service was prompt and friendly. Overall we had a great experience will return to try dinner.
It was one of the more affordable lunch choices in the city area. Lunch sets were available at around $15 on average and food was good too. Would recommend it if you’re in city area looking for a slightly more affordable option. We had the bento sets and rice bowls. The rice can be changed to soba or udon for an additional $4.
My partner and I had a romantic dinning experience. We had privacy with curtains from our table, and we ordered 5 meals which were all very tasty & delicious.
We had very excellent table service, at least 3 waitresses, and they were all fantastic. One named Midori was a very nice waitress, she was helpful to us with the meal as it was my first time to try the shabu shabu (cooking your own meat in a pot), she explained very well the steps of having this meal. It was great and we didn't even need to use the call bell button. They served our meals without delay.
I must congratulate all the staff here that serve us & who have done a wonderful service for us yesterday so we walked out having a very good time. They were friendly & a delight having them serve us. My first time at this restaurant and it felt like we were treated special as customers and it wasn't even our anniversary occassion, yet the hospitality we received was 5 star and very pleasant.
I would recommend this place to my family and friends and anybody who wants a good time and have a great feed. I would absolutely return for meals here. Thank you Ryo for a superb dinning experience and wonderful evening.
If you guys want fresh food with unique taste of Japanese and have a great time, come to this place and dine you will not regret it. It was worth spending of $$$. Arigatou gozaimasu :)☆☆☆ we love this place ♡♡
RYO is a brand new Japanese restaurant located very centrally in Auckland CBD. We were drawn in my the $10 bento box lunch (an opening month special, usually $15) The food was absolutely delicious, with very generous helpings and definitely great value for money.
It was so good, we decided to go back again for dinner that night! We highly recommend this restaurant, not only was the food amazing but the staff were extremely polite and friendly.
Check out the okonomiyaki, gyoza and the squid rings. The tuna and avocado sushi was another favourite we can recommend.
Never even knew this little gem existed bc it was a bit out of the way; but a lot more spacious than it looks from the outside with super cute decor and vibes.
With plenty of the menu, they’re all at super affordable prices and service was lovely - it felt very authentic!!
Great Japanese restaurant. Had sashimi, grilled mackerel and prawn gyoza. All the food was fresh and wonderful.
Very tasty and the service is good. Besides the price is reasonable. Definitely come again.
Wonderful sashimi with quick service. Great having a bell in the booth when you needed attention. Service just needed to be a little more friendly. Definitely go back.
Absolutely amazing food and service. Must do in Auckland
We had a variety of vege and non veg dishes and all were very well prepared and delicious..love it..good price as well. Had fun
Excellent quality of service. Authentic Japanese restaurant experience. Probably my fave go-to Japanese spot in town.
Got a great 7 course meal grin Groupon! Give it a try. :) I always enjoy it here!
We go here all the time for Izakaya. Food is always quick to arrive and tastes fantastic. Good value for money. Staff is lovely. Bathrooms however have been poorly kept every time I have been here and is the only let down.
Authentic Japanese food, great ambience. I'm particularly partial to their $15 lunch bento set, which offers a choice of any three side dishes accompanied by rice, pickles and miso soup.
Love this restuarant, food always amazing, and service is impeccable!! My daughter and I always come here when we visit the city. Thoroughly recommend if you enjoy Japanese food.
The food was amazing, as was the service and ambience. Would definitely recommend, probably going to become my go-to place for Japanese food in the city. BONUS: The large Sake is almost endless.
