The Mala spices were overwhelming in the spicy beef noodles but the pork and egg hand pulled noodles were great at the dumplings were a solid sharing size
I like everything about this place and I disagree with most of the negative reviews - the shop has a nice quaint feeling with self serve tea and sauces and it's not easy to serve people in another language give the staff some credit! I'm here for the food - go to Ponsonby and get ripped off if you need fancy service to enjoy a meal.
Great prices and huge servings.. really love the option of a small lamb soup for only 5.50 - really satisfying with a bread to dip in. The #37 noodle has a cult following for good reason. The dumplings are good but you really want to get a soup or a hand pulled noodle from here. Huge fan and always looking out for new branches. :)
As far as hole in the wall restaurants go, this is the holiest hole in the wall I've ever encountered. Literally five of meals from the last Theo days were from this Mecca of noodles. I'm not joking when I say I'd devote my life to the survival of the idea that is 'Xian'. Every time I encounter the number 37, I will never hesitate to pause for a second as I recall the joy associated with that number that this establishment has bought me. 10/10
Food is as good dined in and taken away. Quick, easy and cheap. Favourites are hand pulled noodles w Xian style braised pork and the hand pulled noodles w spicy chilli oil and vegies. Highly recommend!
Amazing and authentic hand pulled noodles, relaxed and cosy atmosphere. My new go to spot!
went for lunch to try one of their hand pulled noodle dishes and was not disappointed a big bowl of soup came to my table Pork mince with fried egg and a generous helping of spicy. Looking forward to returning very soon to try the Chinese burger
Very much enjoy my meals everytime i come here pulled pork noddles i cant get enough. There pork and chives dumplings are also a fav of mine. Great for winter time. Kind service not that clean of a area but they try which is somthing.
I love this noodle bar. The food is super cheap only $13 for an extra large. Also a great picnic food to take to Silo Park movie night.

Hand pulled noodles with spicy chilli oil - (9.5/10) -
The noodles were thick and perfectly tender and chewy. The noodles look plain but once mixed though the flavours are far from it. Spicy, sweet and garlicy. A must try when in the city looking for a full stomach and not an empty wallet.

13/11/18 friend promise to take me for xi’an foods with special dishes from his hometown.. we tried xi’an pita bread soaked in lamb soup, chinese burger pork braised and xi’an cold noodle.. i like everything bout this dishes.. really good one..
Ordered takeaway from Gogo and it came so fast:)
Every time I go to xian food bar I’ll get number 37 because the meat and the sauce are addictively yum. The hand pulled noodles absorbed the sauce well also. My friend kept on telling me to try the Chinese burger so I gave it a go this time. The bun is called 夹馍 (jiamo) which is made from wheat flour dough so it’s not like a hamburger bun that is soft as we expect. The bun itself is quite plain slightly dry (it is originally like that). I had that when I went to Xian when I was a teen and totally traumatised by the texture coz the one that I had was tough like stone. But trying this Chinese hamburger kinda rebuilt my trust with jiamo because the cumin lamb was so yum and full of flavour and this goodie is only $5.5. I finished it with a blink 😂
I ordered the Prawn and Pork wonton soup which was okay, i added chilli to it to give more flavour, my friend ordered number 37 Hand Pulled noodles which was delicious so packed with flavour and perfect amount of spice, would definitely go back and order that instead. Good prices for portion size.
I’m a meat lover.
If you watch food review shows from China this is a must try.
Lamb innards soup. I love eating here because I love meat. They don’t add salt in the soup so you can add as per your liking.
Nom nom yum yum

Yummyyyyyy i enjoy my meal everytime its so addictive i order same meal everytime (in pic) and i just cant get enough. I travel from south auckland just to get my noodle fix. Staff friendlyish sometimes atmosphere messy an cold but food makes up.
I usually drive all the way from South Auckland just to eat here. Number 37 and Number 25 are my favorite dishes from the menu.
Also their Chinese burger is also delicious too. Tasty and very filling, the food is always consistent. Staff are very friendly :)
I wish there was another Xi'an restaurant close by.
Love this food place! Hand pulled noodles. I normally go for the egg and tomato noodle bowl so fresh and sweet and a braised beef bun. Very reasonable. May have to wait for food but totally worth it! Can't wait to go back. Down side is the bathroom facilities are through the kitchen. Hence the 4.5.
It's amazing; waiters/waitresses were really nice, and the food is really good. The food gets prepared pretty fast, and the price is ok...everything is really good, but I recommend the cold noodles.
I really like this place. It doesn't look flash and the cheap prices may be somewhat off putting.
But the food is fantastic.
The service is average. But very helpful when you need help to navigate the menu. I also like there is different sized portions on offer.
The food here never fails to deliver and is always a great all round meal.
I keep coming and coming. I recommend the beef or cucumber salads or the hand made noodles. Really delicious and satisfying. Both fresh and enjoyable to eat.
We have been going to Xi'an Food Bar almost every week for about 8 months for the epic hand pulled noodles (number 37). Probably the most delicious thing I've ever eaten, and so similar to the Biang Biang noodles we had when we were in Xi'an (but possibly better due to high quality NZ meat!) The Chinese Burgers are also really tasty. The value for money is incredible and the staff are always friendly. We will be back next week!
This is a good cheap eat in Balmoral. I really liked the hand pulled noodles. It was a shame that they ran out of ingredients and I had to change my order twice but overall the food was enjoyable. The staff couldn't speak much English and had trouble explaining when I asked about the food. Overall the food was good compared to its price.
Dropped by here the other day to feast ourselves on their hand pulled noodles with braised pork for moi and stewed pork for my friend. The noodles were faultless and super tasty with the pork. I made sure to get all the juices from the braised pork through all the noodles before adding in some soy and chilli oil. It can stand on its own without the condiments but I like adding extra. It was so delicious and filling I couldn't finish it. I had also ordered the lamb burger which I also couldn't finish because I was sooooo full from the noodles. The lamb was served generously and wasn't shy on the cumin. The "bun" was meh but everything else was extremely good. My friend and I spent under $25 combined for the meal and that is awesome value for money. Highly recommended!
The braised pork noodles are to bloody die for!
I also loved the dumplings in sour soup, they were the perfect texture.
The portions are huge and the meals extremely cheap for what you get.
I love this branch and the Anzac Ave branch for a quick and satisfying meal.
The ambience and service isn't great but who really cares about that - it is Dominion Rd after all! I'm happy so long as the food is delicious and cheap.
Craving the pork just writing this.
Cheap, cheerful and above all else lipsmackingly delicious. I had their Chinese lamb Burger - which is very comparable to the ones at Shaolin Kung Fu Noodles. The winner though is Noodles with xi'an braised pork. So many complex flavors complimenting each other perfectly.
There are several Xian Food Bars around the city and of the 3 I've tried they are all excellent.
Try the cumin lamb burger, I was surprised to find out how much lamb is used in Northern Chinese cooking, this burger is delicious. Also the hand pulled noodles with Xian style braised pork. These are garlicky, spicy hand pulled noodles that are outstanding. Hand pulled noodles are thicker and longer than the noodles that we are used to, but if you like pasta you'll love these.
I visited as part of another (walking) Auckland Food Tour event - this time a collection of chinese specialities on Dominion Road. I LOVE these journeys - each place we visit - the menu is largely ignored and we eat ONLY the dish or two that they are renowned for - or from their region of China. So while only a dish or two will be discussed in the reviews ..... this is the ultimate shortcut to 'best eats on a menu' .....
The tea arrived - and I am now starting to notice just slight variations in tea amongst chinese restaurants!
Here is the spot for the 'burger' we had a Cumin Lamb Burger - oddly enough - think Morrocan! It had the spicy warm heat that didn't detract from the flavour of the lamb!!
Then a lovely bowl of 'hand pulled' noodles - again szechuan pepper heat and flavour to it. The noodles were beautiful - with an italian background - noodles with a little 'bite' to them quickly endear themselves to me - and these were perfectly cooked!
Just like the Mt Albert, City, and Northcote branches I've visited; service and quality is very consistent. Recommended: the braised pork with hand pulled noodles & cumin lamb in bun. Very fair prices and fast service. They offer soy, vinegar, and chilli oil on the side as condiments - note that the chilli on the side is not very spicy. The digital ordering system is fun but can be confusing for first-time diners. Newbie note: please don't take a seat and expect a waitress to come to you.
Great hand pulled noodles. 37 the hand pulled noodles with xian style braised pork is my go to, only fault I would say is the dumplings aren't amazing.
