The nasi lemak is the best! sure will come back back soon!
Excellent food. Must visit.
In Hillsborough..
Rob
Don't know why I didn't try this sooner. Small spot, inviting and super tasty
The food was GREAT!! Will definitely be going back. Thank you again
Tucked away in Hillsbourough is this hidden gem. The menu is pretty straightforward and has all the signature Malaysian dishes.
The prices are reasonable and the portion sizes are decent. The curry Laksa was full of flavour and had that authentic Malaysian taste to it. The teh tarik was delicious although I only wished it was a larger cup.
I love a good find and this one took a bit of a drive to get to but it was a great idea to gather with Singaporean friends in this small hole-in-the-wall restaurant in Hillsborough.
What I liked:
1. Unpretentious and unfussy, you are there for the food not the fancy ambience or cutlery so don't expect any. The place seats about 15 to 20 (which would be a squeeze).
2. Menus are printed on A4 size paper and comprise Chef's Special, Fried Noodles, Rice, Noodle Soups, Snacks and Hot and Cold Drinks. Exceptional on the menu were the $6.50 Nasi Lemak Bungkus (coconut rice with a fairly spicy ikan bilis or anchovy sambal, half a boiled egg, peanuts beautifully wrapped in a layer of banana leaf and paper. We also had the chicken rice which was pretty decent because for $13.99 it came with a bowl of soup, sliced cucumber and a generous amount of chicken rice chilli sauce (that makes the dish). The fried kway teow was served stir fried with prawns, clams, egg, bean sprouts, chives, also plated on a banana leaf which made it look quite authentic. You can choose the level of spiciness of all your fried noodle dishes. On top, it being breakfast, we each had a Kopi 'O' with milk, the two layered variety with the condensed milk sitting at the bottom of the cup - just the way I like it.
3. Halal, manned and prepared by Malaysians, we overheard the happy breakfast chatter of a few other local Malaysian and Singaporeans who had obviously heard about the place via word of mouth.
4. Reasonably priced for a no-frills menu. Hot drinks start at $3.50, nasi lemak bunks takeaway is $6.50 and noodles start at $11.99 whilst their signature nasi lemak which comes with chicken rendang is $10.99. There are also snacks like chicken nibble (12 for $10), mini curry puffs $6 for 5 pieces, a variety of Spring rolls and Roti Canai (2 pcs for $8.99).
In these parts, word travels fast when there is good food to be found.
OMG! Finally we found the nasi lemak bungkus in Auckland!
Ok, what is nasi lemak bungkus? It was coconut rice in packet - usually packed with banana leaves and in triangle shape packing and very economic in Malaysia.
Although the price of this nasi lemak bungkus could allow us eat some 10 packs of nasi lemak in Malaysia, it was worth trying.
There were anchovy and peanuts, half egg and superbly duper spicy sambal (fried chili sauce) on top of the aromatic coconut rice!
At the price of $6.90, small eater could fill your tummy full. Two portions are decent portions for male guests.
They had chicken rendang nasi lemak on weekend or public holiday. The rendang chicken was so delicious and to die for.
If you stay there, give it a try. You sure will fall in love with the nasi lemak! Oh yes, the lady boss told us they are moving out from the current location soon. Check their social media frequently for update.
Nice little Malaysian place, Chicken rendang is the best, owner very friendly, clean and tidy seating area. Recommend this place, would be back soon.

Nice little Malaysian eatery to satisfy those cravings. Food at Sim’s Kitchen were pretty authentic. I mean Nasi Lemak in banana leaf, what’s not to like. Mi goreng tasted good too but spicy means spicy! Wan Tan hor wasn’t bad either and you can taste the wok hei. Prices were slightly steep but good portion sizes. I will come back again but perhaps for takeaway.
a small hidden gem that does well with their hainamese chicken rice. possibly the BEST hainamese chicken i have ever tested in AKL so far. mom also loves their wan tan hor - most flavourfull compare to others.
Best Nasi Lemak I've ever had in Auckland
Just a few tables very small place. Reasonable pricing on all dishes. Will be backed again for sure.
Our favorite Malaysian food joint. Place is rather compact, nothing fancy, but food is the top class!!! Can’t help myself to drink all the laksa soup. Won dan hor to die for. We tried almost everything in the menu and all are so tasty! Boiled eggs are cooked in the perfection. Thank you Sim’s for the greatest food!
Two words...so tasty! Had takeaways and was very pleased with the serving sizes, will eat in for sure though with the next visit. Great friendly service.
21/7/19 Best comfort food on a cold Winter's day - KL Chicken Curry Laksa. The bowl was filled with yummy goodness, including clams (si ham). Unpretentious shop with limited seating but the food is seriously good. 👍👍👍
27/7/19 The Char Kuay Teow here is Da Bomb! Best in Auckland. The Nasi Lemak Bungkus is good too.

We had the hainanese chicken rice and fried kuay teow. Really authentic, tasted just like it is in Malaysia. We had it takeaway, large portions and good price. It will be our regular takeaway now
I had a take a way today. Ordered me goreng and chicken curry. It was spicy as it says. Also add 2 chicken. Kind staff. Want to try chicken laksa next time.
Authentic Malaysian food, especially for those who are craving for Chao Kuey Teow. The owners are originally from Penang so they know how to make the best Penang street food. If you are in a hurry, consider take always, the place is small and sometimes it’s really pack.
Really happy with the food! When I ordered I asked the lady for suggestions and she was helpful and patient. Food taste good and was nice and spicy!
Thank you SIMS for a HOTT Chicken Mee Goreng and a beautifully fragrant and flavoursome Veg Curry Laksa with Boiled Egg n Noodles. SIMS is currently home to some intensely authentic flavors..welcome to our Auckland. They get really busy(and why not) so place orders 20-25min in advance folks.
This has to be my favorite malaysian place to eat in NZ. Humble place, few seats but ...oh boy, the Nasi lemak is spectacular, Prawn noodle soup (Penang Hokkien Mee), Chicken Rice, Wan tan hor and char kept teow were fantastic. Taste is fairly accurate to what I grew up with in Penang.
Highly recommended.
Came all the way from the shore and its definitely worth the drive. The Nasi Lemak Bungkus is so nostalgic where the coconut rice is wrap with banana leaf and when u starts to unwrap it u get the aroma straight to u along with their sambal chilli sauce.
If you plan to dine in, can't go wrong with their fried kuey teow (fried flat noodle) where it is stir fried with dark soy sauce and chilli plus u can deifnitley taste that wok. Another plus is that this fkt comes with small clams and just brings the dish to another level in terms of flavour. ❤️
Need to get more other stuff on my next trip.

I like this place! We had mee goreng, meehoon goreng (fried noodle) and nasi lemak. Fried noodle is soooo good and taste so authentic. Fried chicken is crispy on the outside and juicy inside. And sambal too, if u can take spicy food you’ll like the sambal. The restaurant is quite small and have only few tables so you might need to wait for table during lunch hour, or you can take away and enjoy at home.

Been to this compact little Malaysian eatery couple of times and we always have to takeaway our order. There are only two sets of table so you can’t come with more than 4ppl per table. Food is pretty good and we advice to always call in advance for pick up so you dont wait for too long. Price is comparable to other Malaysian eateries, in $15 range. We quite like their char kway teao, wan tan hor, prawn noodle soup and fried chicken is a must try!
The food were simple but tasty and reasonably priced. The chicken laksa was nice but not the best though. The fried chicken was crispy on the outside and soft and moist on the inside, and not oily at all. I enjoyed my first time here and I will definitely come back as I have yet to try their Nasi Lemak and Mee Goreng.
What a hidden gem, recommended by a friend. Ordered the highly recommend laksa and char okay teow. Authentic indeed with the clam (si ham) and banana leaf. It's a small place but fortunately was able to get as seat. Came back following week for more!
First time trying this place after friends recommended. We order chicken laksa and prawn noodle, good food and definitely coming back for more!
Go to love this place! Taste of the nasi lemak in banana leaf is authentic and this is the only place I know of that sell this. It’s $5 per pack and the dish is called nasi lemak bungkus. Don’t mix this up with their normal nasi lemak dish served with curry. The chicken rice is so fragrant! I can smell the dish when they were plating it up. Just note that they do not serve with chicken soup though. The fried chicken is also very well done and not oily at all.
Btw don’t be misled by the takeaway menu board. You will notice that there are not many dishes in the board. Most are covered with white paper. Ask them for paper menu if you cannot find them.
Only downsides are:
Limited parking
Whole place can only accommodate may be 8 people as it is more like a takeaway place so not many seats available
small restaurant, not too expensive. portion may be a bit small but the taste is definitely worth it. got their nasi lemak, kuey tiew and chicken nibbles. the nasi lemak is super authentic - wrapped in bamboo leaf it felt like I was in malaysia for a bit 😂 the rice was a bit too rich in flavour for my taste but the sambal that came with it helps cover the coconut richness of the rice. the kuey tiew is good too, not too greasy like some other places. chicken nibbles were well fried as well, could be air fried because I barely tasted the oil so I felt good eating it compared to other fried chicken I've had. definitely would come back and try other things on the menu
What a gem ! Absolutely loved eating here and being my first time, I was very excited as soon as I walked into the shop because it smelt so good.
Highly recommended and very authentic, especially the laksa.
Definitely will go back to try more !
Love going there. Kids enjoys the Hainesse Chicken rice , Nasi lemak ayam. Friendly owner. Small shop not good for big group but take away at anytime.
The Hainanese chicken is the best I have tasted in Auckland! They didn’t serve a soup along with the rice. Hainanese chicken is usually served with a side of soup. 🤷🏻♀️ Laksa is very nice as well. Owners are very friendly.
This place is a cafe or takeaways with a few small tables so don't expect a restaurant experience. Parking is a little bit limited as well. And strangely they don't appear to promote their Asian food on the menu board behind the counter. Instead it's mainly burgers etc. So if I hadn't read the menu on the Zomato app beforehand I wouldn't know they sold Asian food. As usual I ordered chicken laksa. The service was fine. The meal arrived promptly and it tasted good as well. Apparently this place gets busy around dinner time and knowing this I arrived around 5pm and largely had the place to myself. This place serves on of the better laksas in Auckland and should promote its menu better.
Foods was tasty. Malaysian traditional food. We ordered chicken rice and curry chicken on rice . Both taste fantastic. Will go back again with my family. The fried chicken tight there was better than KFC. I love it :)
Absolutely floored by the experience and service. I called a day before hoping to book a table for lunch for a group of 6 on a Friday. I wasn't sure if I'll get it as I knew it was a takeaway place but the owner was more than happy to oblige me.
We ordered the nasi lemak (full set with chicken curry), roti canai and chicken laksa. Hard to fault. Everyone's plate was licked clean.
Food was quick, tasty and reasonably-priced. Ticks all my categories.
I've been here 3 times now.. As soon as you walk through the door, you are hit by the smell of the nasi lemak! First time I ordered the hainanese chicken rice, second time I had the penang prawn noodles and the third time, I had the bihun goreng extra spicy version..all 3 times the food never fail to deliver. The food here is not toned down to suit the kiwi taste buds! If you can't eat spicy food then you can always go for the western food on the menu (burger, fish & chips or fried chicken) but I cannot comment on this as I have not tried it. Please inform them if you have allergies as most of the soups and chili paste have some form of seafood in it.
We came here for lunch recently. It was a small place but pleasant.
The service was friendly but the parking could be a bit of a problem.
As for the food, it was tasty. If you are thinking of having some
authentic Malaysian food, you should not miss this place.
We will definitely be back.
Most authentic Malaysian nasi lemak bungkus (wrapped with banana leaf) you’ll ever have in Auckland! If you’re Malaysian, you’d definitely want to give this a go! Only $5 with generous sambal, fragrant coconut rice and crispy ikan bilis topped with hard boiled egg. Felt like we were back in good ol PJ.
The Best Hainanese Chicken Rice in Auckland! Owners are super nice. Wonderful experience. One small tip: order extra bean sprout along with the dish, perfect combination!
I live so close to this place but have never noticed it lol. I've started by trying their normal chicken fried rice and I LOVED IT! It is the most flavourful Malaysian fried rice you will get "No doubt". If you ask them to make it spicy (which I did) they will actually listen to you... unlike most Asian takeaways. Then I decided to try something new which is their nasi lemak dish and it was good too but a little less than the fried rice :D Overall, the food here is DELICIOUS (good prices+large portions). If I were to comment on their service I'd give them 3.5 because sometimes if I specifically phone order and go to pick the food up there are times that they forget to cook your order on time!! Otherwise, a nice little hidden gem
PS: If phone ordering, make sure to advise them a pickup time before you go!
Great nasi lamak and roti chanai. One of the best local places. Haven't tried the fish and chips yet but will soon. Good cheap prices and fast service
Small joint big taste! Try the nasi bungkus: sambal egg on nasi lemak (coconut cooked rice) wrapped in a banana leave. A perfect snack! Roti canai, char kwai Tiau, chicken curry - all very nice!
Great casual spot for Malaysian food. The chicken curry takes the Nasi Lemak up a few notches - it’s bursting with spices and has a nice kick without being too spicy. Because it’s housed inside a takeaway joint, seating is limited and there is no toilet on premises.
Love the snack combo. The chips is exactly how I like it and crispy chicken made straightaway. So it's piping hot. And amazing customer service and on time service.
What a hidden gem!!! Authentic delicious Malaysian restaurant which we will definetely be back again (even with an hour drive from home).
So, this restaurant has been in my radar for a few weeks. Today we got a chance to try, we ordered chicken curry laksa with yellow noodle mixed with beehon, hainanese chicken rice, curry puff, and nasi lemak bungkus. Oh boy! All dishes taste superb and delish, being the highlight are chicken rice and curry puff. I reckon the curry puff is almost the best curry puff I have ever tried. The puff being fried freshly to perfection (not oily), texture was crunchy with soft tasty filling. I am not normally a fans of thigh chicken but Sims managed to conferted me, cooked the chicken to perfection, moist with soft skin plus addition of fried garlic, the rice flavour was nice with good ginger hint, and the chilli was 10outof10.
Curry laksa and nasi lemak bungkus also delicious, but not the best we tried.
Food price was really good, we paid less than $40 for everything, 😍😍 service was good and efficient, owners really friendly and cheerful. really want to give 5 points, however we need to try all dishes and the only downside is the fact that restaurant was quite small, only 3 table fits 10 persons.
Thank you uncle and auntie.
Authentic Malaysian food, I tried the chicken rice and the laksa. Excellent service and the owners are cheerful and friendly. For a small place in Hillsborough I am surprised that the place is always packed with customers.
I am doing a Malaysian restaurant tour in Auckland. The best Laksa and Mi-Goreng in Auckland so far, very authentic Malaysian style. It is not easy to try such homemade Malaysian dishes.

Went here for lunch. The food is very delicious and authentic. Definitely the place to visit if you want the taste of authentic malaysian cuisine.
All 4 of us Malaysians went this afternoon for our Sunday lunch having heard that they serve authentic and reasonably priced Malaysian food .
Kenny and Doris the husband and wife team hail from Penang which is renowned for its Penang hawker food .
We ordered Char Kwei Teow , Nasi Lemak , Wat Tan Hor and Penang prawn Noddles .
We were not disappointed and enjoyed our lunch thoroughly .
Doris is a very bubbly person who knows what is good Service .
If at all the cafe is a bit too small for eat in of more than 4 persons .
For those living nearby take ways will be ideal .
My wife and I look forward to visit Sim's cafe again
A little hidden gem in hilsborough! If you are looking for a good homemade authentic Malaysian food, you have to try this place.
Sim's kitchen is a small restaurant with only 8 tables, but their food are delicious! We braved the crazy Auckland weather today and went there for lunch.
We ordered their penang prawn noodle soup, nasi lemak and roti chanai with chiken curry! Everything was superb! And they are cheaper than any other Malaysian place in town. Their nasi lemak is so creamy and you can taste the coconut cream, the chicken curry was just tasty! I am absolutely in love with their prawn noodle soup! It was spicy and full of flavours!
The place is not fancy, no bels and whistles... and run by a lovely Malaysian couple. I am definitely coming back for more homemade food!
Takeaway place with really good Nasi Lemak with Sambal and Curry. Really good Laksa Curry too. Owners are Malaysian so food is authentic homemade.
As a hungry 22year old lad I am overly impressed. I filled myself for 11 dollars... People may not understand but that is truly incredible. The chicken in the burgers aren't patties but fresh, freshly crumbed chicken breast fillets!! I couldn't finish my burger (ate it an hour or so later ofcourse) have just tried the clear soup and I am completely satisfied. Am yet to try the fish but am sure it will be great! Come and check it out. I live right across the road and need these guys to STAY OPEN!!
We love the Roti Chanai and Nasi Lemak from Sims. Its authentic and very tasty. We would eat it every night if we could! The owners Kenny and Doris are a delight and will see you right with your evening meal. Very reasonably priced and the place is spotless. Definitely recommend for a quick and tasty Malaysian takeout.
Tasty and authentic Malaysian food, great value for money. The owner was lovely, we told him it’s our first time here, he talked us through the popular dishes.
Strongly recommend the Laksa, the soup was super flavourful. The fried chicken was tasty too - crunchy on the outside but not dry at all, it was nice and juicy.

Was at Dressmart w family and we decided to have lunch outside. Walked 500 meters to Sims as it was highly recommended by maps. It wasn't a disappointment. The food is just priced right. The taste very Natural. You can tell there aren't any enhancers. Service is friendly. The ambience maybe basic but one can tell nobody minds this. A lot of people come here for the food. We will be back definitely. You gotta try the chicken noodle soup!
Order Mie Curry Laksa Chicken for me and spicy fried rice for my husband and chicken nibbles. Curry Laksa tastes delicious, just like in malaysia. The fried rice also said the husband said taste lacking good but the portion a little bit small for $18 price. He said he had come before and the portion was a bit bigger than today. Overall, we recommend here for anyone who wants to try simple malaysian cuisine yet yummy. It's also got halal stamp on the restaurant so good for halal food hunter.
I stopped by the Onehunga store after heading to Dressmart. There were a few parking spots right outside the store and I was able to grab one as it wasn't busy. The dining area is fairly large.
I ordered at the counter and grabbed a table. The milo was really hot when it arrived so I didn't really get to have much until it cooled down. The char kuey teow was nice and tasty. I also grabbed six of the chicken nibbles and they were quite juicy and tasty. It was a nice place to stop for some tasty Malaysian dishes.
If you miss Nasi Lemak and Chinese Ice Coffee , yall must come here !! The Sambal was great , spicy , i addon additional sambal , the chicken was amazing , tender and crunchy outside , the Ice coffee was great , boost my day , i freaking boring with barista coffee , this coffee is the great option, The owner was kind and humble person . May this business expand more in 🇳🇿 New Zealand
If you are looking for good Malaysian resto, Sim's Kitchen will not disappoint your taste buds. They have nasi lemak and hainanese chicken rice. Staff are great and courteous. It's a busy little resto so please be patient as you will eventually be rewarded with good food.
Cute hole in the wall. I love a place that feels like a neighborhood favorite. It was full, but not crowded. I had the nasi lemak, the crispy anchovies were delightful.
Some of the offering has great flavour but they do come at a price and this can make ithem unaffordable to be eaten more frequent than we like. Some popular dishes have had they taste catered to kiwi's. I think some of their garnishing could have been cooked better to retained their taste. Overall, pleasant but I didn't get that urge to go back too quickly for more.
This satisfies my cravings for Malaysian food. Both the char kway teow and curry chicken rice were enjoyable. We chose medium spicy for the fried kway teow, even for Malaysian taste bud it’s quite spicy, we were quite surprised to sweat eating the food here. First time in Auckland. As for the price, the mains mostly cost NZD18 each. Complimentary plain water provided. If not they have kopi and teh tarik as well, 8 bucks for ice coffee.
Authentic Malaysian food that every Malaysian would enjoy. Highly recommend their Nasi Lemak with fried rice, fried noodle and Hainan Chicken rice
Pleasant surprise when you step inside Sim’s Kitchen. Cosy little eatery. Nice delicious authentic taste of Malaysian food. Good to know we can eat Malaysian close to home 😄 Will be back. Thank You
Malaysian style food at its best. The twist is if you arrived to the place, you will be schocked to see that it looks like its closed, with the door sealed. But infact, the sign "Open" gives the indication of the best kept secrets is hidden behind these doors! So walk -in, dine-in and explore the simple yet scrupmtious food they serve. Awesome !
Greatest authentic Malaysian meal in Auckland. Love their food and drinks so much, very tasty and memorable.
The restaurant owner and staff are nice and friendly. I usually dining there few times a week.
Extremely recommended!
Authentic Malaysian cuisine. Love the Char Kway Teow and Assam Laksa. Many others choices on the menu. Would go again to try Hainanese Chicken Rice the next time. Highly recommended.
21/7/19 Best comfort food on a cold Winter's day - KL Chicken Curry Laksa. The bowl was filled with yummy goodness, including clams (si ham). Unpretentious store with limited seating but the food is seriously good. 👍👍👍
27/7/19 The Char Kuay Teow here is Da Bomb. Best in Auckland. Nasi Lemak Bungkus is good too.
Small cafe with around 7 small tables. Very busy with diners and take outs.
The off the beaten path location has not affected its popularity. I am expecting an authentic delicious lunch.
The wait for the food was long. We enjoyed a nice coffee during the near 1 hour wait, but it was worth the wait. The portion size of the fried rice noodle was a little smaller than I expected, but the Nasi Lemak was a good serve size.
Uncle and Aunty Sim are amazing chef and beautiful Malaysians who respected the previous store and local culture by keeping the food Halal. The taste is authentic and the lineup of nostalgic fizzy drink brought a smile to my face. Aunty Sim is also very comedic as you can see from the photo. :)
