Came here for lunch one day when they were doing a deal, buy something and get a pastry for free. I grabbed a lamb curry and a mixed berry cheesecake and both were super delicious! Really enjoyed the curry and the cheesecake was so smooth and yummy. Great if you are on the go to as they have a separate section where you can grab your own meal from the fridge and take away. Will definitely be back for more.
Piko 💕
This pasta was 💯, packed with great flavour, the Bonita flakes and the caper berries adding exactly that extra something you needed. In terms of a pasta dish this was nice and light with a tomato sauce base, will definitely be back for this 😋

Came here few times for work lunches and farewell. For big group farewell, we order the shared platter and lunch main and costed us $25 which is pretty good and you get to use the private function room as well. fish and chips, lamb shoulder are the highlights. Great staff and food taste ok.
Nice place and affordable coffee. The service was very friendly and I enjoyed a very nice cappuccino while escaping from the rain. Have got a section with food to go as well.
Had a very lovely experience here today, it's a nice place you want to go to if you are wanting to be a bit fancier than going to your average cafe. I can honestly say that the food is to die for, no joke what they put out is literally heaven, each bite. Btw I got the kedgeree, spiced basmati rice, with poached egg and smoked fish. I would definitely go back and order this again, but everything else on the menu looks great and would want to try it also. A lot of the lecturers etc go here so could network if you're a student 😉 the prices are also very reasonable even still if you are a student but the best quality food I have tasted. Staff were also very friendly. Could not fault 10/10 would recommend to anyone and everyone
Such a great place to buy food made by students. At a reasonable price this is by far the most food-innovative cafe I've ever been to, such great service as well.
Loved the customer service here, they never fail to impress. Food and coffee is great here and prices are reasonable. Would love to visit again
Three of us dined at Piko for lunch last week, on recommendation of one who had been twice prior. We work nearby so this is a convenient location for a sit-down lunch.
My 2 friends had the lamb shank dish, which was served removed from the bone, with a brown lentil type puree in the middle, and some decorative extras.
I had eggs Benedict with bacon on gluten free toast. We shared a bowl of french fries & aioli.
On entry the wait staff welcomed us and seated us at a clean & prepared table. Cold water was brought immediately, with the menu. We ordered promptly and food arrived within 8-10 mins.
My lunch was very nice, good hollandaise without the flavour of vinegar, eggs poached tidily and the bacon was cooked but not too chewy. I think the gluten free toast might have been one of the Burgen varieties and I enjoyed it.
My friends' lamb shanks were apparently very good but they commented that it seemed odd that the lamb & its stew was hot but the bean puree in the centre was cold from the fridge. Not sure if we missed something cultural about the dish, or if the coldness was an error.
The French fries were a generous portion, fried with their skins and seasoned perfectly - very moreish. Aioli was also yummy. Portion sizes were good, quite large in fact.
Wait staff are attentive without being in your face, and there seem to be people milling around keeping an eye on them, talking to them when they aren't serving.
I would call this a café rather than a restaurant, and the prices reflected same. We paid about $70 for the 3 meals, chips and one person had a wine too. This is a professional establishment, and there is no need to treat the place differently than usual for being operated by trainees.
It's worth a look if you want a pleasant lunch and decent service. I appreciated their attention to detail on things such as warmed plates, tidy & clean table, and wait staff who take pride in their uniform.
I look forward to eating here again.
Piko is a great place to hangout with friends after a long day in uni. The fact that they have students as servers and chefs slightly lowers the expectation but since they study hospitality and so do i, my expectations stays the same as other restaurants. On some days, the servers aren't as professional as they can be but on other days they're top-notch. The food has been quite consistent to me and I have tried way too many dishes that I can't really pick my favourite. The atmosphere is casual and fit for a good catchup with friends. Everyone should also check out Piko-to-go as they are quite affordable quick bites. Overall, I recommend this place to everyone and also to give feedback as it's usually students whoa re working and they could use more feedback on how they are doing which would help them in the long run.
Piko is a bit of a hit or a miss place, but you have to keep in mind it is a training restaurant for students. The service has been excellent at times, but then other times not so good - depends on the server. The food is pretty good but sometimes takes some time to come out, which is noticeable when you are time poor or if the place is really busy. Really reasonable prices here too. However, their takeaway food is definitely a steal price wise, and of everything I have tried, I highly recommend their quiches.
What else can beat a simple egg's Benedict for a brunch. Again I've never been disappointed with this place. Went here during lunch hours, yes it's a bit crowded yet the noise is acceptable. I've ordered Benedict and hot chocolate spent around 20nzd. Worth for each $ :) although the servers are students of AUT they've done a great job
I went here for lunch today with some people from work. It was a really big group.
I can be very scathing in my reviews if I feel someone deserves it.
So the negative part was that there was HUGE confusion with ordering. There was a really long wait as well, and due to the confusion, they accidentally doubled up on plates.
BUT they are students, and their lecturer (a lady who worked at AUT) was with them and helping them and apologising and showing how to do things properly.
The food was amazing - it was like masterchef food - hard to believe it was kids in that kitchen!
They even gave us a discount for the inconveniences.
I think I would like to go back, but with a smaller group.
I would expect to pay far more for the food they served up it was incredible, and they were very attentive.
A really pleasant evening out - the food was great - with everyone in our group choosing something different - and everyone happy with their choice. the staff are attentive; the decor subtle but relaxing; the only down side is so many of the menu items sound great - so will have to go again to try out more.
Highly recommend with added bonus of supporting up and coming hospitality students!
In a nutshell - impressive. Piko blew us away with the exciting fusion menu options, un-fussy and yet attentive service, remarkably low pricing for the dinner special (a mere $24 for 3 full courses!) and excellent quality food. Even the playlist was great and so was the ambience. We didn't notice the time fly by, even beyond closing, and kindly no one rushed us out. We will absolutely be back, and we'll bring our friends!! Thank you Piko for a great experience that ticked all the boxes.
I really like the food and the place, as most of the front staff are students sometimes you can feel their anxiety in their smile and talking, but it's fine they're learning.
As I can consider myself a challenge customer cos I've some food intolerance, they always atend my resquest well being cordial and flexible., even sometimes I think the chef get stressed with my order.
Food taste greate and portions are generous, price is good valeu for money.
At these restaurants students cook and serve. I recently had lunch at Piko and the food is great, the chocolate mousse is the best I've ever had! Awesome value for money.
Awesome food, great prices. Only downside really is that since I graduated its harder for me to get to their food as they're closed on weekends and semester holidays, aaaargh.
Really though, they have alot of really interesting food!
I joined the short coffee course in AUT, quite good experience!

Piko Café has continually improved over the past few years. It’s focus on creating a great atmosphere and above average café cuisine makes it a great place to meet for lunch or a quick snack. Piko operates with a professional kitchen that provides training opportunities for students at Auckland University of Technology (AUT). It can be found on the university campus just of Wellesley Street East, near Auckland Art Gallery.
