Came here a while ago for a friends birthday. Simple Mexican food and full of flavor. I really enjoyed the chicken burrito which had generous portions of ingredients inside-made it a filling meal! The whole store vibe and indoor setup are cool. A nice place to go for a catch-up or if you are in need of a late night take-out meal.
What a great restaurant. I was impressed how a fast food restaurant can be so organized, clean and have so delicious food. All staff were very nice and polite. Was my first time at Mad Mex and definitely I will come back.
Amazing food! The Burritos here are always amazing and I'm also a big fan of the Grande Melt! The staff are always lovely and it's the perfect place to go for a quick lunch or dinner if you're hungry and in the mood for Mexican :)
Being that I'm not much of a cook, and also being a health conscious consumer on a budget, I've become a regular at Mad Mex. Even more to the point, I'm from Texas, which makes me a bit of a Tex Mex snob. This place is like a little slice of home, and simply can't be beat in quality at this price point.
I'd also like to recognize the staff. They are unfailingly engaging and polite, yet also efficient, so expect many more visits from me.
Really nice service and exactly what is expected from the subway of Mexican food. Great late night weekend option. Especially if you are in the area but probably not worth a special trip
We came here to grab some dinner to take home after a couple of drinks in Ponsonby. We both had the Grande Melte vegetarian, and it was delicious, packed with vegetables, black beans, guacamole and cheese.
We also took home some corn chips and salsa, and the salsa was the only thing that could be improved. In my opinion it was lacking in flavours and needed more coriander/herbs to spice it up a little.
Other than the salsa, the food was delicious and fast, the prices are reasonable, the decor inside is really attractive and the staff were super friendly. We will definitely come back, and I'd love to try the quesadilla next.
This place is great for a cheap, quick dinner if you love mexican food. They are generous with toppings too! Would definitely go back for either eat in or takeaway.
I heard great things about Mad Mex when I arrived in Auckland. It would be that Mad Mex would be my first "food experience" in the city. My cousin took me out to Mad Mex one evening, and interestingly enough, I was not disappointed. So here are my notes:
The +'s:
>THE FOOD: Mad mex scores whatever it scores just because their food is really good. The flavours are rich, and the ingredients are fresh. It helps that the put the whole meal together in front of your eyes, and you can choose what goes in and doesn't. I do wish they had stuff with smaller portions, because I hate wasting food, and the smallest burrito they had was too huge for me. >THE STAFF: People in New Zealand are generally friendly, but the boys at MadMex took friendly to another level. They were super nice, and armed with a sense of humour, and when they found out I was a tourist, they made sure I had an extra special experience by giving me the right recommendations.
>THE LOCATION: Ponsonby is an excellent choice of area for a restaurant. Walking distance from all the hotspots in Ponsonby, Mad Mex is great to grab a meal before you head out for a night of drinking.
>THE PRICES: Reasonable. Great value for money
The -'s :
>THE AMBIENCE: Slightly shabby, and nothing to brag about. The seating isn't great either. The only redeeming factor is the seating area where you can see the street, and there is no guarantee you will be able to get that table.
The -?'s:
> AUTHENTICITY: The food isn't exactly authentic, but I have to admit it is delicious. If you're anal about the the authenticity of the food, Mad Mex may not impress.
I wouldn't pick Mad Mex for a date or an evening out with the family, but it's a great place to grab a quick burrito after work, or just catch up with friends over a decent meal. Good value for money.
This is our new go to place for a quick easy meal. The barbacoa burrito is so good. The staff are getting better about how to actually roll a burrito which is good. We are from the states and miss Chipotle and Qdoba, for any other Americans this is the closest we have found to them. They also have a loyalty card which is nice. I think Mexicali Fresh is good too, we just like the flavours here a little more and it is cheaper too ($12 a burrito vs. $14 at Mexicali). Super happy they moved in to the neighbourhood. Try the nacho sauce on your burrito... Amazing!
Best Mexican eats in NZ. Verified by a native California thats married to a 💃🏻.
Delicious food, friendly staffs and great environment. Thank you!
This has to be the most authentic Mexican fast food place in Auckland. Really nice corn tortillas rather than the usual nasty things, nice guacamole, great to see vege rancheros with tofu and even vegan cheese for those avoiding dairy. The takeaway containers are compostable which is great to see. Best Mexican I've had since I was in San Antonio a while ago. Yum!
Burrito was good, but the salsa wasn't as hot as I was hoping and the rice was very dry, also they didn't really mix the burrito ingredients together making every bite be either all rice or all meat and salsa.
Firstly, amazing service. Super friendly and helpful.
Secondly, great food. Fresh and hot. Lovely experience. Well done guys.
I'd your looking for Mexican that's not too expensive, this is the place. I highly recommend the nachos with streak. Dinner for 2 will run you about 40 bucks if you each get a drink
MJ made the night, it was the most enjoyable I have had in the best night of my life. Give this girl a raise. Katty was phenomenal and the best, also deserves a raise. MJ knew how to wrap a burrito.
Good Mexican food made to order 😜
Awesome Mexican food my friend said i would like it, i was a bit skeptical as i found Mexicali tasted like Mexican version of Subway, Mad Mex is a solid awesome feed
Great place. Amazing food. Good service. Sauces not spicy.
