I had their grilled cheese toastie. Pretty good for 6 bucks, it was smaller than what I imagined it to be but still nice. They have a few seats in their small cozy store.
Their service is wonderful, they offer small pieces of cheese to taste by the counter. Their ice cream always makes a nice treat.
Encountered this place during a dessert tour. Tried the strawberry flavour and it was the best I have ever tasted. I'm a chocolate person but I would return again for this flavour.
This is superb
Just had the Classic Grilled Cheese
$5.50 for essentially 2 toasted sandwiches
Delish
Quality and price to die for
Try it
Does magnificent cheeses and ice creams also
What a Store
Been walking past this store whenever I work but never actually got the chance to try it. I got a scoop of black currant and blueberry flavor for $4. It had the right amount of sweetness to my liking and there was a reasonable amount of black currant and blueberry flavor. The ice cream was a little bit too thick for me in texture which felt heavy though.
Taste - 8/10
Price - 7/10
Size - 8/10
I come here everyday for a coffee with my work colleague. I think the staff are probably fed up of us because we try the cheese everyday! Lol! It's kept under a heavy glass lid so no flies can get in and is cut with a knife so there aren't peoples fingers all over it as mentioned in another review. I love that after 10 coffee's you can get a free grilled cheese sandwich or any cheese in the fridge up to $8.50. Once i got a free Camembert and had it for my dinner with crusty bread, it was delicious. Staff are always friendly and chat to us all the time. The grilled cheese sandwich is just delicious, the cheese is quite strong but it's so tasty. Sometimes we get croissant with cheese instead and you can choose the cheese you have in the croissant! Yummy!
Really good hot chocolate and some good quiet time in the corner. No loud music, which is what I really like. I also had the chocolate ice cream the next day, and that was really good too.
Have walked past here many times intending to try the cheese toastie and finally did. Yum!! I ordered mine with cornichons inside. Not bad, but will try the kasundi next time.
Toasted to perfection with some crispy bits where the cheese bubbles out on the side.
If you are looking for something hearty and filling for a good price then you will have to try the toastie from The Kapiti store!
Called in here on Friday 20 May 2016, was a gorgeous autumn / summer day for an ice cream (its on display in the front window on Shortland St), Black Doris Plum $4, very delicious indeed. Tried some of their cheese - no complaints here - no wonder Fontera have bought them. Remember the Sunday afternoon drives up to Paraparaumu just for an ice cream and cheese sample too - great memories.
I will say that I was a little disappointed by how flat my sandwich was. I will forgive them though, because I certainly got my money’s worth of cheese. Maybe the thin bread was intentional because I did enjoy how the cheese seeped into it to create a sort of golden crust.
I am no expert on fine cheeses, but at a guess I’d say this is a strong cheddar mixed with something a little softer. Not as stringy as mozzarella, but watch how it oozes. This is a real cheese lover’s meal. Because the bread is so cheese-soaked, it could be overpowering for some, and I did feel slightly ill later on. The chewy rye crust does help to balance the flavours, though.
You know when you’re grilling a sandwich and the cheese oozes onto the hot plate, and it hardens into these chewy, tasty little pieces? Rather them throwing them out for presentation’s sake, the cook puts them right in the bag. I really enjoyed this.
Absolutely delicious and affordable ice-cream that'll make you want to say "worth." The serving size is super generous - and I do mean generous to the point where they fill the cone first then keep scooping and scooping until the ball of ice cream is bigger than your fist. I adore the strawberries and cream ice cream; there are actually chunks of strawberry in there which is amazing. Great, friendly service as well. Highly recommend to anyone looking for delicious ice-cream :)
Have been a number of times in winter for a top notch cheese toastie, in summer for an unbeatable Kapiti ice cream - so tough to choose but spiced apple crumble and nectarine & muscavado are my top choices.
I like the vibe at this place. You can walk straight down shortland Street and see the ice cream staring at you in the face. The lemon grass ice cream is out of this world good. For vibrant and citrus type ice creams...Kapiti is the best around. If you want your rich chocolate ones, look elsewhere.
Nothing to dislike about a visit to the Kapiti Store, yet to try their infamous cheese toasties but have tried a selection of cheeses. Served beautifully and all with a unique texture and taste. The icecreams are quality stuff too. Worth a visit.
Fancy some cheddar or maybe some blue? How about a scoop of Doris plum or spiced apple crumble? This place is a dairy lover's dream! Nice to see Havana coffee represented. A Chuffed soup and a cheddar cheese toastie is a divine combo for any lunch munchies. Could do with expanding the cheese toastie range but otherwise hits the spot.
Good range of ice cream on a hot day! I had a chocolate, salted caramel and almond in a cone, was a great flavour! Affordable price, definitely recommended! :)
Today was a lovely sunny day so I wanted ice cream. The Kapiti store is smartly located on the bottom of Shortland St tempting you to buy something before your treacherous journey up the hill to uni. It was worth it because my order of a double scoop of the Black Doris Plum and Passionfruit and Lemon swirl were delicious. My cone was $6 which is reasonable since the scoops themselves were larger than average. They looked drool-worthy and hit the spot. They tasted fruity and were a great reminder of this summer season encroaching. The service was fast but a bit average as the lady was running to and from the main store to the front whilst getting my order.
Love the ice cream here! Always given great big scoops for a good price. Cheese toasted sandwich has never disappointed. I've come here a few times for gifts as they have a great selection of cheeses and accompaniments. They package everything up nicely and always goes down a treat. Nice store to have in the city :)
NGHHHNGN If you're a massive cheese fanatic like me, this may be your lucky day because The Kapiti Store's grilled cheese toastie is seriously one of the best I've tried. $5 a toastie was already a bargain, but with an extra $4, you can get a small side of soup supplied by the one and only Chuffed cafe just up the road on High street.
The toastie itself is made up of a bucketload of aged cheddar cheese oozed between two generous slices of sourdough and crisped up for a couple of minutes. The soup of the day was 'cauliflower & leek' and matched perfectly with this cheesy concoction; especially on a rainy day in Auckland. $9 for uch a satisfying and warming meal, I'm definitely coming back for another one Kapiti :P
p.s. it may not look that beautiful in the photo, but trust me on this one :D PERFECT STUDENT MEAL!!
I didn't know what to expect when I went into this little store. However, I was really surprised by amazing customer service and I decided to stay and to order something. I ordered a croissant with grilled cheddar and a small coffee. My croissant was absolutely delicious along with fig chutney.
When I was about to leave, I was offered to try their ice-cream flavours with no obligation. I don't normally buy ice-cream as I often get disappointed but decided to give it a try. I was blown away by fig and honey flavour and bought one scoop which was actually a lot! :)
I will definitely come back again!
They might not have much on the menu but it is definitely worth a visit and I dare you to walk out of there without buying any cheese? The menu basically consists of coffees etc and the kapiti cheese sandwich which was amazing! They also have their full range of ice cream available, which when it's warmer j will definitely be coming back for!
As a lover of both cheese and icecream, this place is straight from my foodie dreams. The icecream is creamy, smooth and so delicious; my favourite flavours would have to be apple crumble, summer nectarine and black doris plum. If you're feeling a bit of savoury, the cheese toasties will satisfy that craving like nothing else. I don't know how they make a toastie taste so good, but somehow they manage it! Everything from the bread to the melted cheesy inside is just perfect. The store itself is a quaint little place with lots of cheese on display. The staff are really friendly and super knowledgeable as well; ask them anything about the types of cheese they have, and also for samples if you want!

We came here for Kapiti ice cream only. Sorry we are not cheese fans but they do have a good varieties of cheese sold here. The ice cream was so yummy and I especially like their lemongrass, ginger flavour. Kapiti ice cream is our favourite!
If your a lover of icecream this is a must-try. The icecream is always creamy, rich and served in large scoops for the small price of $4. Definitely the best tasting and affordable icecream options. My favourite, tripple chocolate, gingernut and fejioa
Delicious NZ ice cream with some great local flavours. My personal favourites are the Nectarine with Muscovado and the Black Doris Plum with Creme Fraiche for a taste of summer days.
For true quality Kiwi ice cream, look no further. They have a variety of delicious flavours, from the classic vanilla or double chocolate, to the beautiful-looking strawberries and cream, all the way to the more different like blueberry muffin and doris plum with creme fraiche. I also really like the fact that cones and cups cost the same here, and I almost always opt for their cones which have this faint honey waffle taste and are crispy. None of that stale cone sadness. The texture is creamy and the flavours strong and authentic and it's much better than frozen yoghurt in my opinion. The scoops are reasonable, not very generous, or I'd give them a 4.5 rating. I like the fact that they welcome taste testing, handing you a silver spoon with the flavour you request to try, so you don't need to commit to anything you don't like. There's no place to sit and enjoy your ice creams though as it's just a little counter on the side of the road, but you could sit in the benches or walk around with your ice cream so it's not a major inconvenience. When you go try some, don't forget to pick up a loyalty card so you can get your 10th ice cream free!
Kapiti is a very famous brand of NZ ice cream which sells in almost every food store. This exclusive outlet gives you a much larger variety of ice creams, sorbets and cheese.
Must haves - plum ice cream, affagato and raspberry sorbet.
My 2nd fav ice cream place in the city, after Giapo that is.
With the rapidly expanding gelato joints and frozen yoghurt stations in the city, the Kapiti Store is a breath of fresh air - "keeping it kiwi". It has an excellent selection of ice cream and cheeses, made from native ingredients right here in the Lower North Island of Aotearoa.
Let me start by saying I've only tried the ice cream here. It's rich, creamy and delicious. What Kapiti does particularly well is coming up with original and inspired flavours. Think flavours like Lemongrass & Ginger (refreshing spicy goodness), Apple Crumble (with real bits of crumble in it!) and Black Doris Plum with Crème fraîche. The Feijoa ice cream is highly recommended for fans of the fruit. Then there are also classics like Cookies n Cream, Gingernut and the usual Chocolate, Vanilla and Strawberry flavours. At $4 for a massive single scoop (and $6 for a double overdose), it's also quite reasonably priced.
A must-try for ice cream aficionados in Auckland!
Absolutely amazing icecream. So many choices and so many flavours. Cant ger enough of it. This small little store has a huge range. The scoops are really big and such good prices. Definitely worth a visit for everyone who loves ice cream !
I chose a flavor “ginger nuts” that was crushed gingernut biscuits and crystallised ginger pieces folded into rich and creamy Kapiti ice cream. So tasty. I have to go back again to try another flavor. Flat white was so nice as well.
This is an ice cream shop, cheese shop and cafe all in one. Really nice service. Can try some of the different cheeses before buying and they sometimes have ones on special. The ice cream was very good: good scoop sizes, really delicate but flavorful waffle cone, very creamy ice cream (tried the fig&honey, triple chocolate and black plum (which was creamy but also had a refreshing tang). Didn't try the cafe (grilled cheese sandwiches on the menu) but will definitely come back!
Great ice cream, big scoop and cheap price. Buy 9 ice creams get 1 free scoop as well. Love the ice cream. Staff are friendly.
From Japan:)
Very very delicious.... I love fig and honey flavor. It was really rich.
My god this place was bomb. I would say the reviews def match up to what we got! Everything was tasty for sure. It is a smaller place so make sure to book a reservation before coming!
Shrimp and onion dumpling (4 stars)- Pretty good dumplings. This was probably the only thing we ordered that wasn't OUTSTANDING. It was pretty average tasting.
Special fish of the day with truffle sauce (5 stars)- This was my favorite dish. They did such a good job cooking the fish, the sauce was amazing, and they added elements to make the dish all around textured. Crispy elements with the crunch on top. It was perfect! Still thinking about this :)
Halibut with noodles (5 stars)- Basic fish dish but my cousin has some dietary restrictions and so this was perfect for her. But even without all the fancy sauce or condiments this was very delicious and she enjoyed it!
Short rib special with kimchi (5 stars)- This was amazing! I was skeptical when this came because it was cut up and looked like a flat iron steak which is normally super chewy. But it wasn't and was soooo tender and full of flavor, also had some crunchiness goodies on top which made the dish even better.
Made a special vegetarian dish with noodles and tofu in a curry sauce (5 stars)- Awesome they could accommodate vegetarians with tasty dishes too since it's mainly an asian seafood place. But the sauce was extremely delicious and filling!
The place is also a little tight and our waiter was decent, they could probably work on smiling a little more but I'll be back for the food if I'm ever in the area again!
Toasted cheese sandwich and Kapiti icecream were served quickly and both were delicious. I highly recommend the New Zealand made icecream. Even if you are familiar with the brand - they had flavours I haven't seen in my supermarket. They also sell soup, cheeses, and some small food items such as honey (I saw some Rata honey too!).
Gorgeous, fabulous icecream. My favourite is the Black Doris, not even the Triple Chocolate beats it. They do a great coffee too.
Wow, super cheeses. Very small place for eating in. Only a couple of tables. Menu is just soup and toasted sandwiches. Takeaway are the cheeses and ice cream.
Beautiful range of cheeses.
Order was placed, site was very easy to use, just painful going through the products as the order was not for myself but for a staff member leaving. They received it JUST before they left, perfect timing. She loved the hamper.
