Been there since 2007 and I tried it again yesterday. The tastes are still good enough!
I like the big portions of food, good for sharing. The food tasted fresh and not oily at all (unlike many Chinese restaurants). The restaurant is also well maintained and clean. Good customer service with friendly staff. The Shanghainese stir fry noodles & pork with tomato rice are my favourite here. :) Recommended.
This place looks like another standard Chinese food place in the Meadowland area, but would definitely recommend the food. There's a bit of a language barrier if you don't speak Chinese but usually just pointing at the relevant dishes on the menu works well. Food is always ready quickly and tasted great every time I've been. The dishes can be on the more expensive side compared to other food places in the area, but is worth it for the portion size. They're good sizes for sharing and if you're not a big eater you could easily get two meals out of one dish, or share one dish between two people.
Been coming to Fongmei for 10+ years! Never disappoints, Hungover or not! Well priced and big portions. Usually get the satay beef noodles coz thats bomb!
Fong Mei Cafe has been the go-to Chinese takeaway of my household for the past few years and has provided food for many gatherings between family and friends for good reason.
My personal favorite is the very addicting Salt & Pepper Chicken (though I think this has been replaced by pork chops on the latest menu). It is a deep-fried dish seasoned in spring onions, chilli and garlic. The Braised Fish with Tofu is also very enjoyable. It isn't as crispy or as flavorful as the aforementioned deep-fry but brings a different kind of synergy instead. Each component of the dish works harmoniously with the next from the fish fillet to the thick skinned tofu to the veges and mushrooms making for a well-rounded choice. Other sharing meat options I've tried are Sweet & Sour Pork - perfectly fine but not particularly memorable and Beef/Chicken in Black Bean Sauce which would be one of the better (albeit oilier) Black Bean dishes I've tried.
As far as noodles go, the Fried Egg Noodles with Chicken is another favorite. There are few things more satisfying than the initial crunch of the fried noodles but everything else on the plate like the chicken itself and Kai Lan carry their weight by way of pleasant flavors and textures. I also thoroughly enjoy the Flat Rice Noodles with Fried Beef. It is your stereotypical "magic wok" dish mixing flavors from onion, spring onion, beef, soy sauce and those from the wok itself. The fried rice dishes on the other hand are not as great. The Yang Chow Fried Rice is bland a forgettable (though not bad per se) and the Hokkien version (covered in gravy) while faring a bit better was also not impactful enough for my tastes.
The restaurant itself is quite clean but the service is what you would expect from a Chinese takeaway. The order takers have very limited English (though enough to get by) but the manager (lady with short hair who mans the register) will give you a different experience each time ranging from courteous professionalism to mild indifference to the cold shoulder.
To me, Fong Mei Cafe fills the niche of Chinese takeaway and does what it does very well. There isn't much else to comment on other than outside of unforeseen circumstances, I can't see it falling out of favor in my books any time soon.
It’s actually really tasty.
Not sure if it’s the msg or not. But man it’s good. Better than the Chinese food in central auckland.
Must dine in or get some takeaway like me when you are in the area.

Fong mei is so YOM, the lady is v nice and the food is delish, always come here and always will. Much better then the likes of momo tea and the food portions are massive 🙃
Pretty good food and reasonable prices although service isn’t very good and the lady usually seems angry
The deep fried egg noodles with gravy is one of my favourite dishes from here
I used come here every week to eat their noodle soup! Now we just order takeout. On this particular visit we got combination egg noodle, tomato pork chop and fried beef in soya rice noodle.
Portion sizes are huge. They stuff the takeout container with rice or whatever starch you get.
All the food was tasty. Rice is aromatic, tasty even by itself. Noodles are just as good. The meats are ridiculously tender.Though I was disappointed about the pork chop as it was so thin.
Never had a rude service from here before. Always quick and friendly.
Would recommend if you want cheap, Guangzhou style food.
I didn't want to meet this infamous angry lady everyone talks about so I sent my partner. He said she was nice to him that day lol.
Such large portions for $10! So many wonton pieces and such much noodles as well. I couldn't finish all the noodle!
I would come order again even for a chance to fight with her 😂
This place deserves more than a 2.5 - its cheap and cheerful and its good. I always come here for the sweet and sour pork and the salt and pepper squid. Definitely good in the cheap and cheerful category. Theres quite a few people bagging this place for poor service, but I've been here often and have never had any issues. The point is, you don't come to a cheap and cheerful place for the service, you do it because the food is cheap and cheerful. People just need to get off their high horse and get over themselves.
Nice place for Hong Kong style rice and noodles. Quick and tasty meals which aren't expensive. Gets quite busy at lunch on the weekends so it might be quite hard to get a table.
Decent canto food.
My second go-to place for chinese food (first is Neighbour's Restaurant ;) )
Quite a typical Asian Diner, average pricing and quick to serve with decent servings.
We (family of 4) tend to order a main or two plus a dish of veges, quick, filling and tasty canto :) Food is not overly salty, which is a plus :)
I've never tried their drinks though.
Very generous portion. Almost enough for two meals for me personally. Taste is above average, although some dishes can be a little too oily.
Highly recommend trying their porridge. Best we've tasted in Auckland.
Red bean drink has a very generous amount of red bean in it (for the price we're paying) and a very good balance of sweetness and milk.
Is always our favorite spot to have Chinese food. The portion is good and the price is reasonable as well! Have tried different food there and never disappoint me!
Our favorite dishes these days is the deep fried pork cutlet - it's so tasty with the mayonnaise (remember to ask for it!)~
Fong Mei is one of my usual spots and happily my all time favourite for a good value meal and with different varieties to choose from. I've been a regular at this cafe ever since it had opened and the food is always consistent and tasty, just like the real Hong Kong style way of cooking and its preparations.
The average cost for a meal is about $10/dish along with a generous amount. I highly recommend the Crispy chicken noodles or if you like abit of a sweeter taste then the Crispy Satay noodles is delicious. Their Red bean and black jelly drink is one of the best I've ever tried and its perfect blend of Soya milk makes it pure indulgence 10/10.
At a place like Fong Mei, service is generally not at its top priority as they usually take your order and go, it is a very simple and modest place. Sometimes language can be a barrier at times for some of their staff but it's easily fixed when they do a switch-a-roo with someone else. Other than that, there is no problems with their service.
You can't go wrong with Fong Mei as their menu stretches from one end to the other on the wall. The varieties they serve there feels endless. If you end up becoming a regular there (like myself) you will not be disappointed in their lack of choices as they've got you sorted with their large and extensive menu and its promising top value.
Eat here often, always very good, inexpensive, quick friendly service. Always busy
Flavorful food with good portions as well as great prices. Always served hot and promptly. Can become crowded and cramped on weekends.
This is a great restaurant for genuine Hong Kong style cooking and beverages at a cheaper price than even the cafes in Hong Kong. We have been dining in the weekend here nearly every week and always found the hot dishes well presented, delicious in taste and substantial in quantity.
We will keep coming back for its great service and homely environment.
Fantastic! The language barrier is quite annoying at times but the food is served hot and tasty. The price is good and great for a night out.
Note: It gets incredibly crowded on the weekends
The food portion and quality of this food for the cheap price is great! The customer service is very friendly however there is a bit of a communication barrier and therefore customizing your food at times can be difficult. My boyfriend and I come here all the time as well as bring our friends and plan on continuing to do so.
Fong Mei is a family favourite of ours, we used to eat there every weekend and take visiting relatives there for a good meal. One thing I love about Fong Mei is that the food is always consistently good and comes out fast. We always order the same things:
- Beef and Vege with rice noodles
- Chicken with fried noodles
- Hokkien Fried Rice.
There isn't really a bad dish here, they're all equally good but of course different taste buds will have different favorite dishes. Serving sizes are vast, one dish will be a good serving for 2 people unless you're a very, very hungry person. Prices are cheap, food is delicious, what more is there to say? :D

I've been a regular at Fong Mei Cafe ever since it opened, mostly because my parents knew the owners (previous) and they serve great value Chinese food. Although they do not serve the typical Chinese BBQ, they offer a good variety of dishes which you can enjoy individually or shared family style.
A few of my frequently ordered dishes:
Satay Beef Rice Noodle Soup - slices of beef cooked in satay sauce served over a hot bowl of thick rice noodles
Shredded Pork and Preserved Egg Congee - a huge bowl of congee which I like to season with white pepper
Corn Beef and Egg Sandwich - mixture of corn beef and egg, sandwiched in between toasted white bread (crust cut off)
French Toast - Two thick French Toast with a hearty layer of peanut butter and a small piece of butter. I put a generous dollop of maple syrup.
A cold glass of coffee and milk tea combination - seriously the best HK-style drink ever!
We mostly come for lunch, before they get busy. Since the owners changed hands a few years ago, the kitchen is not as quick as it used to be. But the front of house staff is quick to take your order and clear tables so the turnover is fast. This may put off people that want to sit and chat even though you wouldn't want to because you might get customers hovering around, waiting for you to vacate the table.

great value simple chinese meals!
the battered deep fried pork cutlet with noodle soup is my favourite!
if you like sweet and sour pork, they do a good one too.
Nice place for Hong Kong Cantonese style food. Cheap and tasty meals mostly under $15. They offer both soup noodles as well as stir fried ones and do have options for rice and rice noodles. They also do main dishes. Service is fairly Asian so some people may find them rude, particularly during busy times. Otherwise service is alright.
Food is always good. Cantonese/ Hong Kong style dishes. Prices are fair service is quick if there's not too takeaway orders. But, parking is at a premium.
My go to local Chinese eatery, busy during peak hours but food is almost Goku like instant transmission. Sizzling beef and the salt and pepper braised fish is always ordered without fail
We love this place, usually get the salt & pepper pork chops with fried rice and veggies. Authentic HK-style food, never disappoints!!
A great place for a meal. The staff are friendly and are good with English. They have both English and Chinese on the menu and helpful pictures if your still not sure. A friend and I have been going there for years and we are never disappointed. It's on of those places that always has people in it no matter the time of day. Awesome food and there iced coffee is so good. Not to mention the pork cutlet or dumpling soup.
Authentic tasting Cantonese food. Lots of options from Soup and Dried Noodles, even Toast and Sandwiches. This is my go to restaurant for Congee. They also have other favourites like Wa Tan Hor (Beef and Egg Rice Noodles), Singapore Rice Vermicelli under the "Special" Dishes menu. Closed on Wednesday's

Honestly best Cantonese style food. If you love Hong Kong food, you must go here! I drive all the way from Mt Roskill for this place. 100% Legit
My favourite Cantonese restaurant. The food and service is amazing. Accidentally left my takeaway dish on the table when leaving, and the kind lady working ran up to my car as I was driving away to give me my food. Thank you so much!
Traditional Hong Kong style food, especially Fired Noodle , reasonable price. Family business and do not expect good service!
Came here for a dinner with 3 others. Very nice Cantonese style dishes. We ordered Beef Egg Stir Fried Rice Noodles, Pork Vegetable Vermicelli Noodles, Hoki Fried Rice and Fish Stir Fried Rice Noodles. All the dishes are a very generous size for the cost, we had leftovers. The dishes were all very flavourful, although slightly too salty. Service was good (they offer Chinese tea) and wasn't a very long wait for food. Definitely recommend to give this place a try.

Still the best sweet and sour pork I've had in Auckland. Authentic Hong Kong style noodles as well.
We tried this place for the first time and we never regret! All dishes were so yummy & fresh. Each dishes are in good portion and the prices are reasonable. The restaurant is not flash but tidy & clean. We will definitely go back!!
good food, good price...and even better service...
the rude grumpty woman is the what we expect and would not feel right without it.
Excellent HK style food. Open after 2021 lock down. Still the same quality dishes. Yum
Always great food, great service. Been going here for almost 17 years now. Ignore bad reviews because this place is our go to for great kai .... and the lady is not grumpy, she is really nice.
Always comes through. So tasty & quick.
Love the fried rice, combination meat fried noodles, sweet n sour.
