If you want a cafe where the staff will learn your name and get to know you, then this is the place you want to go! I’m quite picky when it gets to coffee but these ladies always brew the best. The service is fantastic, always smiling, polite and professional (even when the line is circling around the cafe - they always find a time to say hello). The bread is amazing and I certainly recommend asking them for what goes best with which type of bread. I’ve been going here for over a few years now and have always been delighted with everything. I’ve recommended it to friends and family who’ve all had great times there. P.s. if you’re lucky, and the ladies discover you have a dark sense of humour, then you might get funny things written on your cup, no promises!

We had lunch here a few days ago and it was very busy, despite this we received impeccable service, by our lovely server, I sadly didn't get her name, but she had gorgeous short red hair and was so attentive and patient with us. Best service I've had in a long time! Food and coffees were great and served very promptly, as we struggled to finish, we were brought takeaway bags without even having to ask. Stellar service, great food, the sweet pastries are a must. Would highly recommend and looking forward to trying more of the menu.

Positives • A HUGE fan of the pastries and cabinet food. So moreish and delicious, can’t help but get another as I walk out. Coffee is delicious too.

Negative • Very disappointed with the pancakes though. Very dense and overly sweet. Needs compote or something refreshing and liquified to cut thru that. Never too sure if there is table service. Been here on server almost occasions and the same waitress is the only one who serves (ups to her) - plenty of workers but no table service? 🤔

Visited for the second time with a friend yesterday. I ordered the chicken sandwich and raspberry tart and my friend ordered the pancakes and a coffee. My food was delicious, my friend enjoyed hers too. Highly recommend the tarts- pretty and tasty. Service seemed a little bit flustered/agitated but otherwise great, well worth going to :)

Lovely cafe! The service is so fast that while I wait for my friend to order (after I've ordered), my coffee already came.
The blueberry pancake was sensational. My eggs bene with salmon was also great. Really enjoyed the brunch here. Highly recommend and I'll come here to try out different food.

I absolutely love this place. It’s the only place in Auckland where the bread reminds of bread back in Europe. I also really love their Bola de Berlim (which I already ate so I’m sorry for the no photo). The staff are fantastic, super friendly and always helpful! The food can be a expensive however I think it’s normal relative to other cafes across Auckland. I love their coffee, my favourites are their iced coffees and their hot chocolates with coconut milk (you can really taste that coconut creaminess). Thanks guys!

A bustling cafe with freshly baked bread and other delicious looking goods. We ordered off the menu and got some delicious salmon, quiche and salads: all fresh, and great quality - made with local ingredients. The servings were a generous size, and we left really happy. :)

Been there twice and had a wonderful experience. The place is great, food is superb and the truffle mushroom and sourdough bread is absolutely to die for! Word of advice, if you're planning on doing the full breakfast, don't eat anything the whole day and go there around lunch - fills you up in a good way :) I had a slice of the chocolate roll pastry and it's by far one of the best chocolate cakes I've had! Keep up the great food :)

The bread here is authentic and tastes wonderfully fresh and fragrant. Brings me back to the days where my mother cooked fresh bread that was nutrient dense and a dark rye bread. The cabinet food is also very good, a little expensive but an overall great eatery with nice interior. Also one of my fondest memories as we saw Oprah Winfrey when she was visiting New Zealand in Olafs.

Love the husband and wife combo, the interaction between them and staff wonderful to watch. Great coffee, pastries to die for esp the macadamia nut tart! The big breakfast is a winner for him but my fave would have to be the haloumi and zucchini fritters as it’s not doughy

Love the croissants! They were so buttery! Blueberry tart and raisin danish were quite sweet so took us a bit of time to finish them.
I also ordered chocofino but it’s not really my thing😂 I found it still a bit too bitter but my friend tried and he said it’s too “chocolate”maybe it’s just not our thing then

Was gonna try the Portuguese tart but we came in the afternoon and it was sold out :( will come next time definitely to try it!

Felt a little upset about the cleanliness though... as you can see, a lot of the baked goods or tarts have syrups or jam or whatever and some of them must have left on the edges of the table...
I realised my sleeves were covered with sticky jam in the middle of my lunch 😢

Headed here over Easter weekend. It was quite crowded as it was the few places open. However they did charge a surcharge being a Public Holiday.

We came in for Hot Cross Buns and coffee. The hot cross buns were beautiful. Not overly sweetly but definitely gave you that warm fuzzy festive feeling.

As for the coffee - they use Supreme Beans. It was pretty decent.

1 hr WiFi is offered here. Head over to the counter to get a passcode.

Went to Olaf's for lunch today for the first time. Ordered two hot cross buns and a gourmet breakfast. Hot cross buns were fresh from the oven, texture of bun was loose. Gourmet breakfast mushrooms were amazing, tender and juicy. Sausage had a herby spice flavour to it. Bacon was extremely crispy but surprisingly not burnt. Tomatoes were still very juicy from the inside. Egg Benedict was the perfect size to one bite the whole egg. The yolk was runny and at it's finest texture. Baked beans were a bit big but sauce was good. Hashbrowns were crispy on the outside. Would come again to try their tarts!

Came here on a Sunday for lunch. Thank god I made reservations because it was really busy and that’s probably what triggered the little lack in service and we had to keep asking for water refills. However, it was still an enjoyable lunch.

Between 2 we ordered the Piri Piri chicken livers, Vienna schnitzel, and the macadamia tarte.
The chicken livers wasn’t that spicy and they took the curry-like style and added onto the dish. The bread adds the necessary crunch to the dish as it balances out the soft, yet tasty livers. The salad adds the refreshing sour taste that would kick start the experience.
The chicken schnitzel wasn’t very good because all the light flavors were in the thick breadcrumbs. Even though the chicken was soft and easy to chew, there wasn’t much flavor to it (she had to add salt and pepper even with the breadcrumbs).
The macadamia tarte saved the day with its apparent sweetness though.

Came here for Sunday lunch with a friend.
It’s always been a bustling cafe so decided to finally come visit!

I got the Vienna Schnitzel and a Macadamia Tart while my friend got the Peri Peri Chicken Liver.

Food comes out fast. The schnitzel lacked seasoning but the veal meat was cooked nicely and tender. The potato salad at the bottom was nicely dressed but perhaps too much potato for my personal preference; needed something else to lift the entire dish up.
I tried some of the chicken liver which was flavoursome and nicely spiced, especially when paired with the toasted vinscgauer bread!

The macadamia tart was good! Unsweet but gives you all the crunch and crumbs. A good way to finish the meal.

Service was lacking, we had to keep asking to fill our cups and not much attention given. Also a bit dim for my liking, would prefer some interior lighting.

Altogether it set us back by $50.10.

Food: 7/10
Price: 7/10
Ambience: 7/10
Service: 7/10

I made my own bread, by hand. So I know how much efforts you need to put into making a dough, fermeuntate it, prove it, bake it and leave it cool to the best status ready for you to enjoy.

So I respect Olaf's artisan bread and the whole experience he put into it for offering the best bread in Auckland.

It is well-known that in the morning time Olaf is always bustling and packed with customers shopping for their daily bread. I prefer to come here for a late lunch. Love the sourdough, ciabatta and the chewing  fig bread. They are all just perfect.

Or if you have some sweet tooth, do not avoid the desserts in the cabinet. Macadamia tart, blueberry tart, raspberry tart and a little cute barquinho de coco(which is a Portuguese snack, full of coconut flavor) nice pair with a proper flat white.

All the menu is inspired with Middle East and Southern Europe  flavor. It looks like quite a delight for the your tastebud exploration.

Thanks to Olaf, we could get to know the perfect bread in this city.

A German Cafe ran by the Germans, serving german cakes and german bread, made by German hands and German machines, serving delicacies with German quality and German precision cutting 😂 (I'm just talking nonsense here #Germans #butitspartlytrue).
My German tutor often organises a gathering here and after all this time, I finally gave it a shot during the weekend. Had an orange cake and chocolate cake. You could feel the difference at the first bite. You could feel 'real' orange taste and strong chocolate flavour in these cakes - unlike other cafes where the orange cake was usually made with 'artificially-syrup-taste' orange flavouring with colouring.
Price range was within your typical cafe pricing. Ranges about 4 to 7ish for a slice of cake.
The waitress was also very thoughtful to serve us tap water - something I would say is a plus plus plus for the rating (good customer service skills)

Overall, good hangout location during the weekend to enjoy German cakes and bread.

I rate this place. Food might be a bit pricy but the quality is good. Home made breads with no preservatives long fermentation. It's good and your can eat a lot without bloating. It's usually the preservative in the breads that make you bloat. FYI.

I got this chocolate and beetroot cake and a long black. Supreme coffee made well. The sandwiches are epic again pricy but the quality and the amount of filling you get is massive. Try the pulled lamb on turmeric ciabatta, or the roast chicken roll.

Fig and fennel bread to take home served with some blue cheese mmmmmm. They seriously have one of the best breads into. Thanks olaf I hope you branch off to another city closer to me!

Went here around noon on a Saturday but we could still order breakfast. The place was buzzing. It was a bit unclear what to do if you were dining in (do we take a seat? Do we order first?) specially since the place was so crowded. My friend ordered an eggs benedict, and I had the blueberry pancake. We made a mistake on the eggs benedict order, and they were happy to help us out after the server initially said no - thank you! The blueberry pancake was simply delicious. The 'pancake' was fat in the middle... Texture was more of a muffin mix than pancake, full of blueberries inside and out. This was finished off with a dollop of sour cream with a garnish of orange peel and mint. It was yummy and filling. My friend loved the eggs benny too.

Cute little place, gets very crowded. We were lucky enough to get a table quite fast, we had to wait a while for someone to come and take an order. In the end we had to go to the counter and order (maybe that's how it works there?). While we waited for a friend to we ordered our drinks and a Danish to share. I'm not particularly a Danish kind of person, but this was gggoooooddd. It was a pretty decent size aswel. I ordered the gourmet breakfast which was average (sounded better on the menu). My sister ordered the creamy mushroom on bread and our friend the pancake. Both were delicious. The pancake was light and not all that sweet and the creamy mushroom was light too with some simple flavours. Over all I would definitely go there again to try other things on their menu.

The breakfast at Olaf's is wonderful. We turned up very early on a Sunday, managed to avoid the brunch crush, and were treated to perfectly poached eggs with the tastiest home made hollandaise, on lovely sour dough with hash browns that were anything but boring and perfectly crispy bacon and properly slow roasted tomatoes. The chocolate ganache mocha we washed it down with was a trifle too creamy for me, but my husband loved it. The only advice I have is to go very early to have a peaceful and delicious first meal of the day.

Mt Eden is where the coffee culture is at! As my friend and I walked in, the staff welcomed us in a friendly manner. We took quite a long time to order since we couldn't decide, so I appreciated the staff's patience. I ordered a regular cappuccino and their almond croissant, while my friend ordered a large cappuccino and the Copenhagener. The almond croissant was so crunchy and the texture of the croissant was soft, even though it was heated up. Their coffee was really nice, right amount of foam and not watery. I love strong coffee, it definitely boosted my energy. I would recommend their almond croissant, as it'll be a great combination with a cuppa coffee! Their baked pastries is no joke! Great way to start off my "cafe to-go-to" bucket list and enjoy my afternoon on a rainy day.

This cafe is always packed every time I walk past or want to go in for lunch. Finally got a chance to try out this place.

Service is ok. Didn't get greeted when I walked in but that's ok I guess coz my cousin had already got seat a there. But otherwise the staff there were quite friendly.

I ordered the gourmet breakfast cos I was so hungry and a raspberry smoothie. The gourmet breakfast was average. The hash brown was really nice though. A bit oily but it tasted delicious. Think it was homemade -thought it was a little bit on the pricey side though $25.50 but that's probably cos of their (artisan) bread(?) and the free range bacon and eggs. The smoothie had a real subtle raspberry flavour to it. On the menu oh said it had "ricotta and milk" in it, which was interesting. It had a lumpy texture to it -was a bit weird but that's not to say it wasn't good. Felt pretty healthy though 🤔

This place is always packed on a weekend! So I came on a weekday for breakfast instead.

Since they bake their own bread, I ordered a savoury brioche and a cappuccino. The brioche was light and fluffy but I was disappointed with the fillings. Was supposed to have mushroom, cheese but it was non existence.

Friend had a porridge which was served in a fancy board but looked ordinary for the price paid.

My cappuccino was well done though, it was frothy goodness and also had shaved dark chocolate toppings instead of the usual choc powder. Yummy!

Other than that, service was really friendly.

I had read raving reviews in the Metro magazine so I had to this cafe out. Stopped here for lunch and it did not disappoint. We ordered the beef burger with roast potatoes and the piri piri chicken dish. The sauces on both dishes were divine.
Cosy interior also. I recommend that the cafe should hang all their awards at the front of the cafe rather than on back wall.

Freshly baked breads in a comfortable and cosy cafe environment, there isn't much more that you could ask for - than a visit to this cafe. That is, if you can get a seat during brunch or afternoon tea time, though!

The breads are definitely chewy and have plenty of texture, which is the hallmark of a good bread. When toasted, they taste just as scrumptious too. But if you don't feel like sandwich, there are other baked goodies, such as the vegetarian quiche - which my companion really enjoyed.

For desserts, I personally like the chocolate tart, as i am a huge fan of chocolatey stuff. The chocolate flavoured pastry adds an interesting zing to the chocolate tart too. #Challenge

With an award winning bakery right behind the table you sit at, Olaf's European style breads are as fresh as they get.

A simple glass window separates you and the ovens that have baked your sandwich slices.

Housing a menu that is fill of gourmet brunch options and sweet pastry delights, there's something for everyone here.

The smell of freshly ground Supreme Coffee intwines with the smell of newly baked bread and sets your stomach wild for deliciousness.

Well known for its sweet treats, I would recommend trying out Olaf's soft cinnamon brioche - maybe warmed up a bit too for those colder mornings.

Arriving late afternoon we ordered the fruit and honey platter, a champagne ham and cheese roll (halved), a half serving of the roasted vegetables and two flat whites.

The fruit and honey platter came with seasonal fruits and a berry sorbet arranged on a wooden board. I was impressed with the presentation but the one critic would be although having a natural honeycomb is idyllic it's not very practical.

Olaf's is losing a point from me as I find the waiters and waitresses to be slightly lacking. Lacking in friendly hospitality and basic skill. In the few times I have visited Olaf's I have witnessed staff dropping orders or cutlery. As a waiter myself I understand these things happen, but not being able to balance an iced coffee on a tray makes the cafe look novice.

Other than that, Mt Eden is lucky to have Olaf's as their own and I'll definitely be making the trip back.

Fabulous food. Always really yummy! But don't expect service. I stood at the counter u acknowledged with the staff standing directly in front of me while she complained about another staff member. I just wanted to be served. Not uncommon to wait to be served at the counter queue while staff catch up with their friends. Do really enjoy the food though!

I'd always wanted to come here! The mocha was beautiful, however my cranberry granola tasted really strange - I think they used salted peanuts so it was quite disappointing, however I almost completely forgot about this because of their insanely good baking - the bread, the pastries, cakes and tarts, I couldn't even decide what to pick it all looked so good! Truly one of the best bakers you'll find

If you want a seat, better make it a breakfast rather than a brunch. A tad on the pricy side but that's what you'd expect from a great cafe at this location. The food is very well executed - being so busy and with so many staff, it's impressive how consistent how well each dish is delivered. Olaf's excellence shines through, and for those whom are out to search for a great sourdough - you'll find it here amongst other breads you may not have heard of before (they're all good though!). The coffee is less spectacular, but the environment is very comfortable indeed for those warm weekend afternoons.

I visited for brunch, and being a pancake fan went for the spelt pancakes with berry compote. The pancakes were great - light and fluffy without being stodgy, and plenty of berry compote, cream and maple syrup to dress them up. The butterscotch was maybe overkill with sweet condiments, and I didn't go out of my way to get it off the plate onto my pancakes. The side of bacon was mediocre - not crispy, just tough.

A lengthy chat meant I also needed to try their tempting cabinet food, and was very pleased with an apricot danish.

Downside would be price - $7 for the bacon side and a 15% public holiday surcharge turned my pancakes and hot chocolate (the large being what I'd call a medium anywhere else) into a $35 outing which is pricey for brunch without being so fantastic or unique I felt it justified the cost.

Absolutely delicious food and coffee. It's nice to see the bakery on the side where you can see your bread being made fresh... The pricing is only a tad more expensive than other cafe but it is worth it. Every time I've been there however I've always had to wait at least 10 minutes for a table because they are so popular.

The service is always fine there for me. They give ou a table as soon as possible and I've always had a pleasant experience with the staff. Very informative, warm and polite.

COMPLIMENTARY LOAF OF BREAD FOR THE ROAD

Hospitality is about service, and Olaf has it!
Our waitress was just amazing. She was warm, knowledgable and a "bread" of fresh air.

Olaf is tucked away from the main strip of Mt Eden. I kinda like it that way as part of me wants to keep this place all to myself. At night the lighting sets a romantic mood and the atmosphere inside is warm and cosy. If you happen to be outside they ensure you're kept toasty by supplying you with blankets! They are such good guys even your K9 pals get looked after. Water bowls are provided for your fluffy fur child.

Gentle sounds like Bon Iver will tickle your ears as you converse with your friends. The food being served on neighbouring tables will make you wish you had a bigger stomach so you could try it all. Tonight there was only room for an antipasto platter, chocolate mousse, and coffees. I cannot wait to return and tuck into the Middle Eastern influenced part of the menu!

We were the last ones to leave tonight and as we were fixing the bill we were offered a complimentary loaf of bread EACH to take home. *Happy Dance*

We were sad to learn Olaf will no longer open for dinner during the winter months but were pleased to find out we had caught it on the last night that it was! I will return and when I do I plan to fill myself with everything. Pizza, Fattoush, Muhalleibi, Homemade Ice tea... the list goes on and on!!!

Went here for breakfast. I had salads from the cabinet (can choose upto 3 different flavours). Must try grain salad and baked vege salad, very delicious! I also had tuna sandwich. Bread was very nice and tuna was full inside the bread. Had dessert with blueberry tart and flat white. Blueberry was very fresh even though blueberry season is over. Nice and cozy place!

While having a little look around Mt Eden and not really hungry but curious, I set upon looking at all the cafes in Mt. Eden to keep in mind for the next time I was in the area.  Olaf's isn't in the main strip of Mt. Eden Road but I had to have a peek in and see what they had to offer.  I was impressed by their offerings and couldn't help myself so got the raspberry tart and a coffee.  They use Supreme coffee and the barista was quick and efficient and was the perfect consistency and flavour.  The raspberry tart was just divine.  The base was nice and crispy and the combination of tart and sweet made for a delightful treat.  Service was amazing.  Friendly and chatty made for a really nice experience in the cafe.

I would definitely have to come back and try their other dishes.  I hope the rest of it was as good as the sweets and coffee I had!

Everything you expect an ordinary brunch to be. Classic menu and cooked well. We ordered the eggs Benedict with hollandaise on the side, and the big breakfast and both were perfect. The big breakfast could really feed two or one big eater. It even comes with two different types of their specialty bread

Takeaway sandwiches were good too. We had a lamb on cumin bread and egg salad. The lamb was a little intense after a while and I would have been happier if it was on a less herb & spiced bread.

Coffee was above average.. Milk is not as velvety as some other places
Ambience is nice and unpretentious but I would prefer table service rather than ordering at the counter.. I would expect that for the price

Cabinet food was enticing and inviting.. Now I need to return to try this amazing looking sponge cake wrapped in meringue. I will no doubt be back. Why bother going to Frasers when you have this place across the road?

I've heard of so many positive reviews about this bakery, so first time checking in to see what's this all about.

This is not located on the main road, so finding a car park is not as painful. And very fortunate, we managed to secure a large table for a big group of us on a public holiday! After glancing thru each items on the menu, I've decided to try one of their mains not related to their famous bakery goodies - FUNGHI CON PANCETTA.

A generous amount of mushrooms, deep fried pancetta and hushbrown like gnocchi di pane dusted with parmesan cheese. If you're a savoury trooper like myself, you'll still find it a lil salty after completing the dish! In saying that though, the flavour of each ingredients worked so well in harmony, I just wanted to keep on taking the next bite...and sipping their homemade blackcurrent ginger ice tea!

If you fancy their desserts, I highly recommend you to order one to share. Brought home some takeaway desserts, Macadamia nut tart and raspberry friands was a brilliant decision if you're not a sweet tooth like me. Accompany with a cuppa expresso or Americano will do your day the justice ;)

I'll definitely come back and try the rest of the menu/cabinet options next time round.

Updated Review - 26 Jan 2015
It's been a while since I was last at Olaf's Artisan Bakery and to enjoy Auckland Anniversary Day, I took my family out to Olaf's for lunch. As per my first review, I still rave about the food that they serve, including the delectable tarts from the cabinet as well as their menu items.

Yet today, we experienced very poor service from the lady at the counter who clearly DID NOT want to be there nor serve us. Service with no smile and poor attitude. During the whole time I ordered, she had a sour expression that only disappeared when the people behind us ordered. She giggled and smiled with those male customers but when my sister went up to order, her grin quickly vanished.

To be honest, I think good service and great food need to come hand in hand. I already have to pay a surcharge because of a public holiday, I expect decent service. Is a smile too much to ask for, even if it's a fake one?

-------------------------- -------------------------- -------------------------- --------------------------

Olaf's Bakery and Cafe located in Mount Eden is not only a great little cafe, it is a fantastic and award winning bakery that makes European style artisan breads from scratch which supplies bread to fine dining restaurants such as The Grill, Sugar Club and Botswana Butchery. Olaf, the master behind this cafe and bakery is German trained with over twenty years of baking experience. I love purchasing their speciality breads whenever I host dinner parties because they have some stunning flavours including the macadamia and thyme sourdough loaf.

I've also stopped by to enjoy their cafe several times. Their gourmet breakfast which has baked brands, tomatoes, mushrooms, eggs, bacon, sausages and potato cake was matched with Olaf's six grain toast. A hearty meal but pricey meal. Their scrambled eggs with black truffle is to die for! Fluffy and light scrambled eggs with a heavy dose of truffle oil is heavenly and one of the best scrambled eggs in town!

Before you leave, make sure you stop by the cabinet and get something sweet for you to take home! Their desserts and pastries are worth the added inches!

Olaf’s Artisan Bakery truly lives up to its name – as soon as you enter you are greeted with the sight of gorgeous cakes, tarts, and pastries that make the mouth water… and we haven’t even started with their main menu yet! Their specialty is traditional European breads, which they supply to notable eateries such as Ostro and the Sugar Club. The open kitchen beside the dining area is a nice touch, allowing you to watch the bread being made as you eat.

We’ve been here a few times, and each time, despite my resolutions to try something new, I simply can’t get past the french toast with lemon curd, mascarpone, and raspberry compote ($19). The toppings are a nice change from the standard bacon and banana, and there is just something amazing about the flavour and texture of the bread that I can’t seem to put in words – it’s the crust, I think, and the smell… On the other hand, their iced passionfruit tea ($6) was almost unbearably sweet, and tasted more like passionfruit juice than tea.

The last time we came, my partner ordered the risotto with porcini mushrooms and pesto ($20). Despite my initial reservations (ordering risotto at a bakery!), it really did turn out pretty well, with a nice creamy texture and flavoursome taste. Next on the list to try are their pizzas, and the lovely counter treats that I never have seem to have space for after their mains. I did take away a chocolate danish once, and it was heaven in a brown paper bag, despite being eaten many hours later.

True, they are a bit pricey, but their quality makes up for it. I would definitely return, but will be sticking to their standard drinks.

Mmmm! I have not tried any of the mains here, I will soon though! We've only ever popped in for a coffee and a sweet treat. The almond pain au chocolat is near perf. Light and buttery pastry with a delicious dark Belgian chocolate filling - shaved almonds on top - served warm... it doesn't last long. Fantastic with a strong cappuccino. Mochas are good too but the hot chocolate was rather milky this morning - probably because it was a particularly busy Sunday. The bread is on point too - fantastic, quality ingredients, Sourdough buns especially good with that cute little cube of butter :) Always a good choice, go Olafs!

Olafs is a fantastic place just to hang out with friends for dessert or just for brunch. Saturday's & Sunday's are super crowded which means be prepared to wait & pounce on the first empty table. The eggs Benedict are yummy & the French toast with a side of bacon with the lemon curd is to die for. Try the Copenhagener which I swing by for a little treat

I went to Olafs for lunch today with a friend. They have a good menu and a fabulous selection of cabinet food. As it is a bakery I thought I should try something with their bread. I had a roast chicken ficelle which was substantial and delicious. My friend also enjoyed her sandwich. We shared a huge piece of this sponge, vanilla custard cake with meringue on the top (I can't remember it's proper name) and it was divine. I can't wait to come back and try some of their other food as everything looked so good!

Olaf's is my favorite cafe in Auckland and since they opened recently for dinner it was about time to check it out. We went last Saturday with a couple of friends. Mostly small plates on the menu, so I am in heaven. Between the four of us we ordered pane caserecio (the meaty version), brioche burger, gamberoni, arancini, lamb, spare ribs and the vegetarian pizza. The food is amazing! Why not, since the lunch menu is good as well. We all loved the wild boar rilletes and the burgers - they are to die for! They have a small selection of wines, but well chosen for our taste. We had a Waiheke Merlot which almost tastes like Italy. Finally dessert: chocolate mousse, banana lime tart tartin and the briocheschmarrn ( had look that one up on the menu). Never had something like that before. Soft and tasty with lots of caramel and the parfait not too sweet, which is a perfect match. We all decided to be back next week.

I dropped into Olaf's Bakery with a friend to satisfy our sweet tooth craving.  It was my first time there and I was struck by how popular it was and how appetizing everything looked.  My eyes were definitely bigger than my stomach so I really couldn't order anything substantial.  My friend opted for the dark chocolate tart and I had the cinnamon roll.  My cinnamon roll was delish!  I loved the hint of orangey syrup goodness in it.  Next time, I'll come for dinner and try out their confit duck!

I have been twice to Olaf's for dinner and thought it is about time to drop a line or two. Being from Italy I am kind of spoiled when it comes to food. So my expectations were not too high.

We started off with the pane casereccio
, olives, sundried tomato pesto, smoked eggplant, anchovies, prosciutto, salami and wild boar rilletes. I love the rilletes, taste almost like home. Next was the arancine, to die for. Followed by the assyrian lamb, moroccan fish and the crispy pork all exceptionally good. Love love their wine. We had a Merlot from Waiheke, couldn't actually believe the wine is from New Zealand as it really taste like an italian wine.

To finish it off we ordered the apple strudel (interesting presentation) and the tarte tatin - OMG YUMMY!!!

Our waitress was attentive and the food arrived steady from the kitchen, so I assume they took the last review in consideration. We will be back soon, probably to try their lunch as well.

Very much enjoyed their soup of the day on more than one occasion. Yummy, chewy breads; desserts (tarts etc) not too bad, but a little too sweet for my liking.
The most unfortunate of their services would be that some waiting staff are not very friendly, and all have frowns on their face if not emotionless...and Burnt Coffee on all occasions...lol.

Mt Eden Road is always overflowing on a Sunday with people brunching out. My friend and I were meant to try RAD cafe but the place was jam packed so we headed down Mt Eden Road and decided to try Olaf's Cafe. Inside was really buzzing, almost every seat was taken and it was really loud. Luckily we got a table outside and the weather was nice!

Olaf's was definitely on my 'must-try' list and I was amazed by what they had in their cabinets alone. It was full of yummy desserts, tarts, cakes, pastries and lots of different salads and sandwiches/rolls too. They also had fresh bread and a full menu to order from. Just a note: you do have to order at the counter and pre-pay your meals.

My friend and I decided to share dishes and order eggs benedict with bacon on sourdough ($21.50) and french toast with with bacon, banana, vanilla mascarpone, lemon curd, raspberry compote and maple syrup ($19).

The eggs bene was yum but there was nothing particularly special about it. I don't think it was worth $21.50. The French Toast though was amazing! I definitely recommend it. I loved the vanilla mascarpone and lemon curd which I don't usually see with french toast.
For drinks I tried the Chocofino which is basically a Mocha but with homemade belgian chocolate (mmmm) and my friend had a Cappucino.

To finish off we shared a Portuguese Tart which was super delicious! The pastry was nice and crispy while the custard was smooth and creamy.
Overall I really enjoyed Olaf's and would definitely come back again! There are so many yummy treats to choose from and they even do dinner service so I'd be keen try that as well.

Today I took away a selection of cakes and can safely say that they were delicious. The chocolate almond meal cake (bittersweet chocolate, the centre melted in my mouth almost like a fondant yum!!) the raspberry tarts and the raspberry and lemon bundt cake were to die for. I should have bought a lemon curd tart too because it also looked great. Something to look forward to next time I guess

Recommended to me by colleague!
Knew it was in the Mt Eden village and thought it would be easy to find? Assumed it was on the main street in some old building! It's down a side road a stone throws from the main drag! The place sits behind the Chinese fruit vendor in a modern looking clean building with a good rustic feel to it!
Sat by the window watching the old Chinese shopkeeper loading produce while our food was being prepped (Was told he is 100yrs old and his wife is in her 80's) Opposite me you can see the baker diligently making his loaves thru the glass partition
Ordered the bacon n eggs and my girl had a Danish pastry of some sort along with coffees. The food was nicely presented and ever so tasty. This has got to be one of the best in Auckland and they do live up to their reputation with out being pompous about it!

We'd walked in about 8.00 so very few diners in there! Come 9.00am the place was like being at the train station, so many people amassed in the eatery. My girl commented that so many different languages being spoken by the pretty patrons. She thought it was quite cute

Yum.

I could not fault Olaf's. Their coffee was the best I've had in Auckland for a long time, their service was friendly and delightful, their food was to die for!!! I had the pancetta de fungi (mushroom and pancetta gnocchi with what tasted like a lemon butter dressing and basil pesto) YUM! Could have eaten it a million times and totally reasonably priced considering the location. Other dishes ordered at my table were the BLT from the cabinet and the corn fritters from the specials board, both looked lush and were apparently equally delicious. When we left we picked up a couple of tarts and a loaf of ciabatta for later, not surprisingly they were great too.

I live in Wellington city where you're spoilt for choice on delicious food and great coffee and while I have found a few nice places on my many visits to Auckland, none have impressed me as much as Olaf's. I am so impressed. Definitely my new regular when I'm in town.

My only niggle was the $10 price for the cabinet salads, I probably would have had one if they were a more reasonable $8? But I haven't tried them and they did look spectacular so they could be worth it.

We've been regulars at Olafs for a while now. I agree, it has its good points and a few not so good points. (But I don't think any cafe is good at everything nor strives to be.)

I really object to paying 80 cents for a small circle of butter. Items that need butter (scones, muffins) should have butter provided for free, as it is in most cafes I've been to. It's not alot of money but it does make the muffin damn expensive when you're already paying top price.

But as for their bread/cakes/muffins/pastries/sandwiches, they are excellent! I can't believe someone posted here that the bread was no good, it is the best. Thank-you Olaf.

What an extraordinary place. Their staffs are up to speed, excellent coffee and delicious food. A bit on the pricy side, but when I talked to the Cafe Manager, she explained, that everything is made from scratch. Had a Hot Chocolate which is made with Belgian Chocolate – superb!

They have an open bakery were you can watch the bakers. What a great idea, especially for children. We forget these days where our food comes from. I can’t understand older posts, which give this place a one star rating. That is ridiculous. I am in the hospitality industry myself and my rating is thumbs up for Olaf’s. I will be back.

Olaf's Artisan Bakery Cafe makes bread the equal of any European Artisan Bakery. I will drive the 50 kms to Olafs twice a week from now on to get my bread. I would have given 5 stars but there was no sauerkraut on the cafe menu. I'll have to keep looking for that.

Sad to see this quaint cafe garner such an average rating on this site for I believe it is one of the best in Auckland.

Delicious breads, delectable patisseries and damn good coffees Olaf's Artisan Bakery & Cafe is a delight. You can even watch Olaf, the artisan baker and owner, perfecting his craft through the glass.

The temperature in the cafe is a tad too warm for my liking and the menu is pretty pricy but otherwise it is outstanding. Perhaps the bad reviews are just a tactic to keep this cafe for the locals :P.

Olaf's has been in Mt Eden village (my local stomping ground) for a few years now but I have never quite made it there as it is always hard to go past the old favourites, but this weekend for brunch I decided it was time to branch out.

I met my family there at 9am and it was busy but not over crowded, we were there for brunch but there were lots of yummy looking cakes and rolls etc in the cabinet so I definitely need to go back for lunch one day. They also had a sign up saying now open for dinner, but I didn't get a chance to see a dinner menu.

For brunch I decided on the croque monsieur as it has been awhile since I have been to La Cigale markets and that is usually what I get there. My family ordered the pancakes and omelette. My meal was delicious, they didn't scrimp on the bechamel sauce which is critical for a good croque monsieur, and its a big call but I would say it reviles the one from La Cigale markets.

We had an enjoyable meal with yummy food and there were definitely other things I would order there, so I will go back, need to add it to the rota of Mt Eden Village cafes...

Mouth watering looking at the food cabinet. They got the best pastries especially the tarts and a huge selection of freshly bakes breads. Ooh! And the blueberry smoothie is a def must try:)

Olaf's is located in the heart of Mt Eden so it's convenient but amazingly not too noisy. There's street parking along Stokes Rd and into Epsom Ave if you need it. There's a variety of seating both outside in the warm sun or inside where the lighting is warm and cozy. The entire place smells of baking and good cafe food.

I like how you can see what you can order in the cabinets and this is probably the one cafe with really good cabinet food. It was just at the end of the busy lunch period but still nothing looked like it had been wilting there for a morning. It looked fresh and tasty, all of it.

Finally, we decided on a chunky slice of a vegetarian quiche with side salad and a blueberry muffin. They tasted as good as they looked. The quiche is hefty and had so many layers. It was very eggy and the skin was browned to perfection so it was chewy while everything inside was melt-in-your-mouth soft and smooth. I couldn't really tell what vegetables were in it, mostly green ones, and they lifted the egg enough so you felt like you could devour more. It also came with this dish of pickled beans and pumpkin or something like that, which was rather meh and a bit too sour for my liking. The salad was fresh and well-tossed, with a very tart dressing. I would've preferred it without the dressing.

The blueberry muffin had huge chunks of blueberry in it and was soft and delicious, just like home-baked. I really like how Olaf's makes everything themselves. In fact, a lot of other cafes sell their food. Pop in here for some great cooked food and to watch the bakers making bread and pastries, or even the amazing cabinet food. You won't regret it.

Stopped by Olaf's Bakery for a quick lunch after hearing great things about them. Immediately, I was captured by the open kitchen area where you can see the bakers making bread. The cafe is very spacious with plenty of tables. After tasting some bread samples, I ordered a blueberry smoothie, ham and cheese sandwich and strawberry tart from the cabinet. I was surprised at how salty the sandwich was. The bread itself was very chewy and sometimes hard to bite off, which was a bit of disappointment.

The highlight of the meal would have to be the strawberry tart. The tart had the right hint of sweetness. The custard and fresh strawberries paired with the crunchiness of the tart was a great combination. I would definitely return for the tarts, but maybe not so much for the sandwiches.

Olaf's is downright delicious!! I have discovered this little gem only very recently, and have since made at least four trips, well out of my way, just to bask in the enjoyment of my meals! I think the key to their impressive selection is based in their bakery - they bake their own bread every morning, and what bread it is! They do not just simply have your average brown/wheat/ciabatta, oh no. They have nearly a dozen different kinds of bread, which they sell in full loaves, as well as part of their meals. I am not usually a fan of food on display in cafes - never enough sauce, too cold, rubbery etc. But Olaf's is in a realm of its own. I first tried their Reuben sandwich, with delictable cornbeef, amazing cheese, and out of this world delicious bread. Topped off with just the right amount of sauce and then toasted, it absolutely made my day. Since then I have also tried their version of the classic ham and chesesandwich - Freshly baked ciabatte, fresh and flavoursome cheese, plenty of ham, crisp cos lettuse with the perfect amount of mustard dressing (I thought I didn't like mustard....this sandwich proved me wrong!).
Each visit, I couldn't help myself, their pastries and desserts on display just looked too good, and I have since tried their apple galette and dairy milk chocolate tart. Just amazing. I can't wait to go back and try something new on the menu!

Popped in for a quick brunch while the Rugby World Cup final was on (how very unpatriotic).... Normally this place is cranking, but RWC23 seemed to have kept everyone at home, meant that service was SUPER quick. Cost $65 for 2x brunch meals, 2x coffees and 1x impulse buy cabinet item +Good strong Supreme coffee +Great onsite bakery with fresh artisan breads + Excellent cabinet food. Brunch (Mince on Toast and Eggs Benedict) was good, solid fare; eggs poached perfectly, bacon crispy, mince well-flavoured. Doesn't quite have the X-factor of Crave Cafe brunch, but definitely worth a stop in if you are in Mt Eden and have done Frasers, Circus Circus et al.

Olaf's Artisan Bakery Cafe is a solid choice for a quick and tasty meal. Overall the food was good, although the portions were on the smaller side for the price. As a bakery, I was also a bit disappointed that the meals didn't include more bread. However, these minor issues were easily overlooked due to the overall high quality of the meal. I tried the Gourmet Breakfast and paired it with an oat flat white, both of which were very tasty. The oat flat white, in particular, was creamy and smooth. While Olaf's may not offer the best value for money, the quality of the food and drinks more than make up for it. I would definitely recommend giving this bakery cafe a try and look forward to returning in the future.

Had the eggs benedict with spinach from the menu. Very nice food presentation but unfortunately taste was quite average (had to put on heaps of salt) and portion was rather small for the price which was a bit disappointing. Flat White (with Coffee Supreme) was delicious though, and service was friendly and quick. Also had the rosemary scone and the fig and fennel bread takeaway. Both were super yum.

Busy spot on a Saturday morning but worth the effort. Service was good and we didn't have to wait long for our meals or coffee. Bit of a diy assembly job for the smelt bagel but that's no biggie. Our group of four were all pleased with meals.

Place with relaxing vibe. Employees seem to enjoy being part of place even though it is pretty busy often. Tasty patisserie and bread. Very nice coffee. All in easy going decorative ambience. It is great starting or finishing point for Mt Eden hill with beautiful views over Auckland.

Went in for some poached eggs and iced chocolate while my brother had the gourmet breakfast and iced mocha with shared duck fat wedges. Both meals were delicious and served within a good amount of time. The staff were beyond friendly and very helpful and sweet! I was not quite a fan of the cinnamon in the iced chocolate but it was still enjoyable. Both breakfasts were delightful! We will definitely be coming back here to try the other items on the menu and maybe some cabinet food! Great place to eat and relax :-)

They have the best blueberry tarts plus these tarts have the most blueberries on top compared to other shops. There is no other cake shop that puts so many blueberries. There are a lot of varieties of bread and dessert to chooses from, their coffee is also very rich in flavour I highly recommend you go visit this place.

I had the most amazing blueberry tart here. The tart itself looks pretty big, but was amazingly easy to consume. The sweetness of the tart was perfect, not overly sweet like the usual tarts you get in NZ. The blueberries were coated in a thin layer of what I could only describe as sweet jelly, which help remove the sourness. The cream was very light and has a smooth consistency, which makes the tart very easy to eat and won't make you feel heavy after eating one. The crust was crispy, but not too crumbly. Everything about this tart was just fantastic! Oh and also tried some of the breads here, they were quite good as well.
