What an amazing location and environment - so calming and welcoming. The staff were very friendly and prompt with their service and the food was delicious - so fresh and with variety!
Great place for catch up. Very friendly service and the foods are delious. Highly recommended.
Awesome place to have brunch with family and friends. The best eggs benedict i have never had. The coffee is great and the staff are very friendly. Highly recommend.
The steak is delicious and coffee is very nice. The stuff is very friendly. Nice outside
Definitely will go there again!!!
One of my favourite cafes to have brunch. The place is always nice and tidy. I love their coffee too! Highly recommended to all.
Great coffee, excellent place to hangout with friends and family! Will return for sure
Awesome service and well presented food. Definitely will go back
Good food & service with a nice range of food on their menu. A little noisy at peak time inside - wished we had a table in the courtyard outside. Gorgeous building.
Cute local brunch spot with a nice courtyard! (Dog friendly too 🤩)
Food was the highlight. We had the egg's benedict with bacon (hollandaise on the side) and the red flannel hash.
Coffee tends to be weaker than most places I've been to but really appreciate that their coffee mugs come super warm to keep coffee warmer for longer.
Service was a bit abrupt and slow (they were understandably busy) but food took quite long to come out. Would definitely come again.
Steak & Haloumi is delicious!!! Reccomend to all cafe lovers.. Beautiful space with a open door to the reserve right next door. Also noticed it was a pet friendly cafe so to all you animal lovers.. a place to be!
Yum. What a cute place to eat out. I came here for lunch, and the food was so yummy and beautifully presented. I will definitely come back here again.

Went here for a morning breakkie! Very cute cafe near st Mary college. Despite the fact that it’s super busy in the morning, our food came super fast with very satisfying presentation and taste! Overall pleasant dinning experience :)
There is no shortage of brunch options in the Ponsonby area, but Mary’s is one of the better ones. The menu has a mix of the old breakfast favourites plus specialities of the house. We especially enjoyed the cheese soufflè and the smashed avocado and pea on bruschetta. The service is very good and diners can sit inside or out in the sheltered courtyard. Definitely a place to bookmark.
Amzazing food and coffee.
Courtyard setting is perfect for summer brunches.
Super friendly staff,
truly enjoyed our experience here!
Will be back to try the rest of the menu
We popped into Mary's for an early Sunday brunch. The food, coffee and service was amazing! It had a great atmosphere and with almost every table occupied we received our order surprisingly fast. We'll definitely be back!

+3.5
The service was good here with friendly competent staff, although they did get my coffee size wrong. I liked my food, but my partner thought it was a bit boring and that the steak and houlumi needed something extra to make it pop, and too much salt was put on the chips. The setting was a bit of a downer. It was far too loud in there, which made conversation difficult. All in all, I expected better from something that had such a high rating to begin with.
Nice cafe. Loads of gluten free options and perfect for bigger brunch groups. Nice open space that is not to rowdy either. Everyone in our group really enjoyed their brunch. Top notch service +A.
Beautiful place, delicious food and PERFECTLY poached eggs! Would absolutely recommend for no-frills, insanely delicious food and something a little bit different. I had the pictured here is the Power Salad and Red Flannel Hash! Well done guys!
You can read my full review of this over on my blog - www.simplytheora.wordpress.com
Service, Atmosphere, Food, Coffee, everything you ask for a great cafe! My wife and I are regulars of Mary's coz we are deeply in love with the place.
They offer hearty service, great coffee and delectable food.
I always order Soy Mocha and my favourite dish is Spaghetti alle Vongole (which I still have no idea how to pronounce).
I always takeaway 2 x blueberry cream cheese brownie for my next day's breakfast :)
Thanks Mary's for being a part of my life.
Walked in here on a sunday around 11am. Place was buzzing with people. We were greeted promptly and given a choice between in- or outside. We ordered coffees and the shakshuka. The raw salad and avocado with poached eggs. The ambience was great and so was the food. Would definitely dine there again!
I'd give Mary's a five but there is something not quite right about the seating, there are too many pictures and fake flowers are a no no anywhere! That said, they do the best poached eggs and the service is fantastic. I particularly like that you can choose to order at the counter or they will take your order at the table.Tim and his team are fantastic, obviously they like what they do as some of the staff have been there since they opened and the fact that they all remember my name and I get a really cheerful welcome regardless of whether it is during a busy week morning or a quite weekend is fantastic!
Nice little brunch spot tucked away in St Mary's road near Ponsonby. The smoothies were okay, they could use more yoghurt but they're not too sweet which is great. The food was lovely but the bacon could be crispier and the hollandaise sauce had a taste of vinegar that was a tad too strong for my liking. The coffee is great. Would recommend for a nice weekend brunch.
Beautiful place, beautiful atmosphere, friendly staff and delicious food.
Mary's is big and spacious, space between tables are not too close which is perfect.
I got the almond milk flatwhite, and bf got the avocado peanutbutter smoothie for our drinks. I got the classic eggs on toast with a side of avo and he ordered a steak halloumi.
The coffee was yummy, but the avo and peanut butter smoothie wasnt the best, the banana taste in the smoothie overpowered the taste of penutbutter. The eggs on toast was perfect and the avocado was just right. The steak was beautifully cooked medium rare and the halloumi was chared perfectly. It was delicious and the portion was large.
Overall, Marys is delicious and great! Will defitnately be back!
Nice menu, a lot of thing to chose from. I had a tofu, haloumi toasted bun, but they have other vegetarian options as well. Service was friendly and fast. Not sure what beans they use but coffee was superb.
Only had take away salads from here so far but they are always fresh and delish, even if it's late in the day. There is a tempting array of sweet goodies on the counter, the caramel slice 👌 staff are always super friendly and helpful. The dine in menu looks super good and it's such a gorgeous space
This is such a cute little cafe! It's very secluded and intimate which I like. I got the chocolate strawberry custard tart from here. I thought it was pretty good except I could see the gelatine( I think that's what it was anyway). It did ruin its appearance but nonetheless it still tasted pretty decent :)
The first time I came here, I was left with a great impression. Whenever I eat out, I try to have something that's unique to that place i.e. can't be had anywhere else. Such an item at Mary's was the vegan black sticky rice with coconut, sliced almonds, coconut cream and fresh fruit. It was divine. Not too sweet or overly filling, just the right portion size. So fresh and unique and delicious. Highly recommend.
My friend had the poached eggs with cumin/feta potato cake and haloumi on a bagel, from what I know, it was also good, I tried a bit of the haloumi and it was pretty yum.
The second time I went, I had the Shakshuka which was like a tomato stew thing with spicy peppers, onion, poached eggs, chorizo and crusty bread - if you're after savoury food then this is great. But the thing that made my day this time was the coconut melon tea - who knew that the combination of these two would go so well together!?
Much like it's titular name, Mary's brings brunch back to basics. And it's a refreshing divergence from the trends of hipster cafe joints. The menu is expansive but features classic options done well instead of things you can't pronounce, the plates are round and white instead of funky, wooden or impractical, the interior in an old heritage building is monotonous but pristine with plenty of room for mothers to wield their prams down instead of squished full with interesting objects protruding walls and finally I'm not worried that the dudes making my coffee might accidentally contaminate it with one of their dread or beard hairs. Anyway I thoroughly enjoyed my tofu and halloumi toasted sandwich ($17), add chorizo ($5) as all ingredients simply complied together in the right proportions. Not to mention how did they get that avocado swirl looking like that?? Hot tip: sit out back in their courtyard on a sunny day but keep an eye out for the Ponsonby lamb that may wonder in from St Mary's reserve next door.
Nice and bright and in the same building that Soto (a Japanese restaurant used to reside), M was really busy but we managed to grab a table for 3 quickly. The food was tasty, we ordered a Shakshuka, Mary's way, a Croque Monsieur and the Mushroom Bruschetta, service was great too. Glad we finally got to check M out.
Mary's is another solid cafe outing (from the guy who brought us Benediction, Jafa and Shore Rd), nothing too fancy or out there on the menu...just does the basics well.
Good service, excellent coffee and tasty food.
The have the most perfectly poached eggs and the Croque Monsieur is fantastic if you're feeling like a fatty ;)
This is a lovely cafe with a wide range. The power salad is the perfect brunch full of good fats. The coffee is exceptional and the service is fab. 3 visits now and each one as good as the last.
Love the menu! The power salad with salmon is my go to for a healthy brunch that is delicious. The man at the till is always friendly and the staff are nice. When they're busy sometimes the food comes out at different times or well after the coffee, which is the only reason I give it 4.5 and not 5. The outside area is really nice on a good day but inside also has a nice ambience. Will continue coming here for sure!
Lovely little cafe in Freemans Bay. I got the French toast which was delicious, it was so big I couldn't finish it. The cabinet food looked amazing too!
Refreshing change from all the hipster cafe joints popping up everywhere at the moment. But hey, take your hipsters, add ten years, a couple of mortgages and some kids, then put a few of them into suits, give some others a pram to push around and voila you end up with real people eating at a real cafe. Anyway, more to the point where did this place come from? Am I the last unqualified diner to hear about it? Someone mentioned it to me and I thought, hmmm should go past. Looks very low key from the outside, but then you go in and heaps of people everywhere, in what is probably one of the largest cafes in the area. Ordered scrambled with bacon and was one of the best ones so far at a cafe around here... Menu looked really good and service was exceptional.
Looked for a place to meet my friend for a coffee. They use all press coffee here which is my favorite brew.
Service was very fast. The guy behind the counter was very friendly. Only ordered coffees which were very good. Would love to come back to try the rest of the menu. Overall very nice feel and ambience
I had heard a bit about the new place in St Mary's bay, Mary's, so when we were looking for a place for brunch this weekend it was the perfect choice! Located in the old fire station it is lovely inside.
There is quite an extensive menu to choose from, something for everyone. We tried the croque Monsieur, red flannel hash, shakshuka Mary's way!
All the food was delicious, coffee lovely I will definitely visit again!
My new favourite cafe! Love the rustic character of the old brick Fire Station. Lots of room which is often lacking in city cafes. Would be even better in summer sitting outside in the enclosed courtyard.
Now for the food! There was a review in the paper which recommended the Croque Monsieur - a French version of an upmarket toasted ham and cheese sandwich. This is what I had! It was divine. The 3 slices of bread were light in texture, the ham off the bone was tasty and a Creamy cheesy Bechamel sauce topped the sandwich. The rocket salad served with it helped to cut through the richness.
My stomach was already groaning but I couldn't resist the home made Louise Cake to accompany my coffee. Oh well off to the gym the next day!
Set in the old Ponsonby Fire Station, Mary's inherited the natural character of a building of old. The arching windows and solid frames gave the cafe an almost regal feel. Having literally run into the cafe to escape the rain, the waitress was attentive and quick to serve a beautifully made flat white.
Once my friend joined me we ordered breakfast and chatted amongst the other patrons who quickly filled the cafe. I had the poached eggs on toast with sides of homemade beans and feta potato cake and found it tasty, although the beans needed a bit more seasoning. The toast was also a toast undercooked but no matter as the eggs were nicely poached.
Mary's already seems like a popular cafe destination and I was impressed with the quick, friendly attentive service. There were some interesting art pieces on the wall but to be honest I couldn't quite work out the intended image of this cafe. I guess the beauty of this lovely building has me yearning for some old charm ambience. Perhaps a second visit is needed them.
Went to Mary's for Mother's Day lunch and it was AMAZING! I had a fresh vegetable juice which was hard not to finish straight away, and then when it came to food 3 of us had to order the shakshuka (poached eggs swimming in spicy tomato/capsicum base), I got mine with feta, the others with chorizo. Man oh man it was delicious! I had never tried the dish before but I'm an addict now!
I can't wait to go back, thank you for an amazing meal!
Tried this out today and it was exactly what I hoped it would be. Great location, easy to park. Great interior, it has a really nice outdoor seating area as well. Great service, so friendly and great food! My partner had the avocado bruschetta with poached eggs and a side of salmon and I had the peanut butter and avo smoothie with banana and almond milk, both delicious! Will definitely be back to try out some other yummy things!
Went here on a Saturday for brunch , got a table for 8 quickly and the staff were quick and friendly . Food was quick also . I had the mushroom brusetta as did some one else and we were a little disappointment , was just mushroom on toast ... No sauce so was very dry and the bread was to hard to cut . And was a bit pricey $17 for 2 toast and maybe 6 mushrooms . Other peoples meals looked nice . Will go back because it was a nice place but will defiantly get something else next time
I had the Schnitzel, coleslaw on ciabatta bread/sandwich it was $17 - Would never get it again, small, visually not appealing at all and I didn't even come close to being satisfied, big disappointment. If you went to Burger Fuel or Burger Burger you'd pay less and get more.
They got my coffee wrong and gave me a voucher for a free one, nice touch! (No bloody biscotti though)
Food was great, the photo is the smash avo. Very tasty. A friend got the chicken waffles and that was really nice. Highly recommend.
Nice quiet outside area.
good quantity. good food. standard coffee. liked the outdoor area.
Nice small cafe at the end of ponsonby. Cafe was very busy at noon on a Friday, with adults, children and dogs.
The Coffee was good, the cake was tasty. For 2 lattes and 2 slices of cake we paid 28 NZD.
They also sell breakfast for about 25 NZD.
Very surprised by how big this place was once inside. Both indoor and outdoor areas available.
The food was flavourful and delicious.
The staff were very friendly and service was great.
Coffee was also great tasting.
Will be back again!
Great service and food was delicious. Definately a hidden gem. Coffee was sooo good 👍🏼 The presentation of food on menu is beyond your usual cafe style food😍😍 will certainly go back...support this local cafe!
A great cafe located in the suburbs of Ponsonby! The food is amazing, typical cafe menu but done really well. The pea and halloumi fritters were soo good! The fried chicken waffles were delicious with a nice slaw to go with it. Vietnamese coffee is really good too.
Pretty cafe, yummy food and very friendly wait staff. Have been another time to the Takapuna one and same good food and service.
Can't believe we haven't noticed this here for 3 years of being in the area. Better priced and food than the others in the area!! They will also happily accomodate veges. I despise cafes that won't exchange bacon and sausage for mushrooms and tomato, when it's cheaper and they're cooking it anyway! This place, happily swapped the meat out and the butter for olive oil! Good size drinks, top service! The avo smash dish was so tasty looking you wanna lick the plate.
Really good food and coffee. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. Will be back for sure.
The food was absolutely delicious and plated beautifully. The coffee was good and everything was really well priced.
Cool vibe, good service and didn't take long to be served or get our meals even though it was pretty busy.
The toilets are upstairs so wouldn't be suitable for everyone however they may have toilets downstairs that I didn't see and I didn't ask.
Parking was a wee but scarce but we parked down a side street that had plenty if parks and walked up the street about 30metres or so.
Absolutely loved it! The food was amazing, and the service was 💯
Will definitely be a regular!
So much space with beautiful indoor/outdoor seating options! A well decorated and comfortable café with really friendly staff. Coffee was delicious ☕ and outdoors is doggie friendly with water bowls and space for them to lie down and chill 🐾 Entrances both front and back of the café, making it wheelchair accessible too.
Nice food and good service!
The café was really nice! It had a bright and spacious atmosphere, and the service was fantastic - the staff were super friendly and helpful. The food was very good, and the coffee was on point. Plus, we found parking pretty easily, which was a nice bonus.
I really love this cafe as it’s got a very cozy vibe, good coffee and an amazing place to grab some good brekkie. The French toast is absolutely brilliant, chilli scrambled egg on bagel is amazing too. Highly recommend this place if you want to try something new .
