Shoguns has been my go to Japanese restaurant for well over 14 years. I agree the prices, portion sizes and selections are not as great as they use to be (use to love the Shogun Specials) but I can’t find anything around the area that’s better. The service has always been excellent, the food yummy and the prices still reasonable .
Went here for Valentine's Day; omg love this place! Been so long since I last came here; they were even accomodating when I got there 25 mins late after being at the wrong restaurant next door lol the chicken karage for entree was super yum; for my main I had the chicken katsu; amazing! And my bf got the spicy chicken was very tasty; recommended place x
Excellent service and good food at great prices.
Friendly staff and great family atmosphere.
Ordered sushi and sashimi plus tempura for 5. Plenty of food for all and the quality was fantastic.
Lots of items on the menu to pick from including sushi, dons and bento boxes. They have quite a few options to choose from. I had tofu bento and it was quite nice. Aside from the teriyaki tofu it had sashimi, sushi, and tempura, much like other places.
The place is family run and the owners are very friendly. Nice place for dinner or other meals.
Over the years, this place has had a few new owners but did very little to try and 'revamp' the branding of it all which the place needed to thrive.
The first owners were what hooked me and my family to the place and I can happily say I have lost count the amount of times we would go here. The second owners made us reluctant to return as the quality of food really dropped.
HOWEVER, the new owners as of around a couple months ago are amazing! The new menu is so modern and so fresh it honestly gives everyone an option of something they're bound to love.
I've there around 3 - 4 times and I've basically always ordered the beef dinner bento box. The beef is so soft, tender and well marinated. Everything is really yummy and fresh!
Definitely casual customers if the quality keeps up
Visited this nice restaurant a few times, mostly lunch time. Enjoyable atmosphere & ambience, I love their warm sake, the bento lunch boxes are a top fav, the salads are crispy fresh, the fish or meat have always been good to taste & the tempura is good, the service has always been friendly & welcoming & the beans before the meal are always a good starter. As usual the Japanese do not run these places so thats the norm around this place. The cook has been very accomodating & manages to prepare a decent meal every time, the quality has been consistently good, its not AAA grade food & the prices reflect that pretty fairly. The special dining area where they have the low table & legless chairs is a novelty. Love that particular seating zone for its uniqueness & authenticity. Nice place to visit for a decent lunch. Try their different varieties depending on whether you are a fish person or a meat person. I love the variety of a Bento box for lunch & am a great fan of their cooking. Good location too. Must try out some more new dishes outside of the Bento category as the photos look so good & tempting. Thanks for the photos, to whoever took them. Looking forward to seeing you again at Shogun S&SB.
This place has really tried to make itself more upmarket. I had the salmon+tuna+avocado+seaweed+fish roe sushi. Really it's everything I would like on one sushi on a sushi. It's a nice Japanese place to go to if you are out in the Eastern suburbs. Quality isn't top notch but it's not too bad.
Been going here since i was very little. The previous owners didnt to much with the place and really let it go. With the new owners having been there two months they have brought it back to what it used to be! Im glad the bento box fulls me up with pleanty left over again! One sushi bar you MUST try!!
Best takoyaki I've had in a long time ! Comfortable quiet place , great service and delicious food which is so affordable. Lunch for 2 around $25, will be back :)
Very good restaurant, caught my eye straight away they had great service provided from a lovely Japanese lady waiting. 👌
Good work shogun 😝
Been here for at least 10+ years now and it has swapped multiple owners since then. But one things hasn't changed is the standard, if not that it might have been gotten better from when it used to be! Bento boxes are always a steal and fresh ingredients are used. When I think of Japanese I always come here. It's not the authentic authentic of japan but which ones are in NZ without spending a fortune. I would actually have this over places have Nishiki anyday. My favourite is having this at lunch time ( Lunch Bento Box ) And now that I only work 2 mins away I can come here all the time!Highly recommended for family and friends and dining is a nice seated atmosphere.
While driving around Howick for a place to dine for lunch, I somehow instinctively stopped by Somerville and decided to try Shogun out. Having walked/ driven past countless times, I decided it was time to try it out. The lunch special caught my eye- $11 for a bento box which consists of your choice of stir fried meat or tofu, rice, takoyaki, sashimi, edamame, miso soup, and a salad. I was blown away at the value of the meal, my dining companion and I were too full to finish our dishes. Of course, this is definitely not "Japanese Japanese" as it's run by Koreans, and this shows in the food too. The takoyaki tastes like a commercial "reheat in microwave, then serve" variety, but my teriyaki tofu was full on delicious, the saucy kind where you actually need rice to complement the dish. It's the most un-teriyaki tofu I've had, but good nevertheless. I like the variety in this dish, so it would be a good place if you have a bunch of friends who usually never agree on what they want to eat.
Been coming here for years , this year it had changed management , I would say it's better now than previously without a doubt. The service they provide is much more enjoyable than before. A popular dish between friends would be chicken katsu chicken, and my personal side dish is takoyaki , very reasonable prices , and presentation is lovely
Delicious! Tonight we ordered takoyaki, tempura, yaki soba chicken and teriyaki chicken. Generous portions, great service and a lovely warm atmosphere. Will be back again soon!!
My family and I have been coming to Shogun for what feels like forever (at least 10 years.) There have been a few changes in management over the years, with the most recent one being about a year ago I think. Food is still delicious, well priced (especially their lunch specials!) and generously portioned. Service is always polite and friendly as well. At this rate, I'll be coming back here for the next 10 years!
I don't know if Rick M has eaten Japanese a lot, don't think so. We had a meal at Shogun on Friday and the food was not only very, very good but also on the lower scale price wise.
Don't forget you get a Miso soup and salad included in the price.
We had Sashimi for two that was very fresh, Tataki for two was melt in your mouth and a dinner box, plus corkage. Bill came to $98.00 To me that is value for money.
Well done Shogun.
This is a very popular restaurant. Many of my friends recommended me to eat here.It was very well priced for the quality of food it offers.I really like the lunch box options available here.
Our favourite Japanese. Sashimi always excellent & very fresh. Great value & good choice of dishes. Service is friendly & they get to know you & your family.
Been here a couple of times, awesome atmosphere, accomodate you even when you can tell they are nearly full. Takeaways awesome and just as good as being there.
We have been coming to Shogun for the last 13 years and the food is always as expected.......great. Since then, we have had 2 children and they enjoy the Shogun experience.
A wonderful Japanese restaurant. Fantastic value for money, impeccable service and great food - what more could you ask for?
We have been going here for many many years and feel like family now. Do not need to use a menu as we have our favourites and they are always fantastic.
The best Japanese restaurant in Auckland, and very quick and friendly service. I would highly recommend to anyone, and our granddaughter who is only 3 years old, now feels at home here too.
We eat here regularly. Have found it to be one of the most economical Japanese restaurants - especially when ordering the dinner box meal - the kids love it.
This is a great little Japanese restaurant. I really recommend the $10 lunch box. Great value and delicious.
Good service. Take away also
Food is really nice and well priced. Pretty basic decor but clean and tidy
My partner and I were worried about going back here due to a change in management, as we were very friendly and regulars with old management. However, as soon as we walked through the door all our worries were left outside! They redecorated the place, with new flooring, but kept the old art. They managed to create a new atmosphere, whilst still maintaining the feel of the old Shogun.
The food quality is even better now. The portions of food have increased and presentation of the meals have changed. However, the new chef has somehow managed to make great food, even better. My personal favourite is the Chicken Katsu, and i recommend a side of Asahi/Sapporo beer!
Atmosphere is great, service is great, and food is even better than before!
