Decided to visit after deciding last minute on a Friday to go out for dinner. Most places were fully booked or had late sittings so decided to try Mr Tanaka’s. Initially, looking at the menu, I’d didn’t look like much and we thought the skewers would be fairly small but that all changed when the food arrived. The skewers were quite large portions and were really tasty. The beef had a lovely charcoal char to them. Sadly there was a bit of silver skin so was a bit tough to eat. The other skewers were also really good. The tempura vegetables came out not how we were expecting but they turned out to be really good, all soft enough with a light batter.

The 3 of us went here and got the kids pork belly, pork and cabbage gyoza, chicken karrage (when we went there it was 2 for the price of 1), chilli squid and miso eggplant all for the price of $66! Everything was so good and the service was literally the best. We were able to bring our dog in and they gave her a bowl of water without us even asking for one!! Honestly the best place to go.

We had lunch at Mr Tanaka's. Absolutely love the food. Very fresh and authentic. Our favourites are Tuna Tataki, grilled salmon, tempura soft shell crab. The tuna tataki was fragrant as they have added lots of sesame seeds. Grilled Salmon was crispy on the outside yet soft inside. Just melts in your mouth. Tempura soft shell crab was just yum. Staff members are very polite and prompt as well. Seating is spacious. Will definitely recommend.

We had dinner at this restaurant. The service was great, the staff were very attentive to us. Food were great as well but have some comments about it: fried chicken was a bit salty for me. Pork belly, the meat itself is a bit bland that’s why you have the sauce for it. Beef tatak was delicious.

Great tasting Japanese Restaurant in Ellerslie. Menu has plenty of variety, but did lack child friendly options. The 'Share' dishes are a great way to try lots of different dishes and the Yakatori-style Sticks come in pairs. The Mains/Robata were really good value and the Waitress recommended the Angus Rib-eye, which was really good.

Food is great, the beef skewer were abit too tough. But everything else taste good. The team is very friendly and provide good services. Very nice ambient and great dining environment.

Excellent food and service - we enjoyed the short rib, tuna tataki, karaage chicken, chicken ginger meatballs, pork belly bun, pickles, lotus chips, and mochi dessert. Open air seating appreciated for summer. Great for groups and drinks.

Most of the food was really nice. Main exception was the eggplant with no hints of the miso and ginger mentioned on the menu. Pork belly skewers and tuna were especially good. Service pretty good and reasonably prompt. Perhaps a little overpriced for what you get.

Had dinner and drinks here on a Tuesday. Was quite busy and looked to be a bit understaffed. A bit cramped and very hot inside, so expect that if it's a hot day. We had trouble flagging down staff a number of times to get drinks and order more food. The food was excellent however some items were very slow. We had sake and cocktails and 2 rounds of food, but still ended up getting a dish refunded as it hadn't turned up by the time we were done. The raspberry lemon sake was delish and the coconut creme brulee with sesame gelato was next level! We'll definitely be back. Great for a casual dinner with good food and drinks. Couldn't find any copies of drinks menu online so have included.

Im obsessed with Japanese food and have visited my fair share of Japanese restaurants over the years. Mr Tanaka's hands down has to be my new favourite. Generous, tasty portions, quick, excellent service. I will definitely be back!
