The best Southern Africa-styled grilled ribs I ever had around North Shore. It tastes like the way butcher slaughters pig with draining blood out. Much tasty much appreciated!
Really enjoyed a nice good meal here. The ribs were very tender and tasty. The burger with mushroom sauce has a nice rich taste to it. The wings were nice and juicy as well.
One small let down for me is that you get a large amount of chips with no dressing. You have to pay extra for tomato or aioli dip which is a bit disappointing. I purchased two aioli containers and one tomato sauce container, and it was $2.50 extra, which is a bit steep in my opinion.
They also sell peppermint crisp tart which is a really nice South African dessert. For $3.00 a tub, it's definitely worth the price if you have any room after eating your mains.
Despite the whole sauce shenanigans, the food is still good and it was really satisfying.
Just like the other branch, very good especially after a very long day of climbing Rangitoto. Introduced a mate to Rack n Roll and he pretty much cleaned his plate up.
Rack n roll ribs is pretty much always consistantly good quality. Sometimes the chips or onion rings can be a little on the soft side. But otherwise they are always full of flavour. Ribs are yummy and sticky. Have had their wings can be hit and miss first time delish and second time was not as great. Will always go back
This place doesn’t look like much, the marketing budget must be low. But oh boy..... they don’t skimp where it counts! I first tried the chicken on chips. INSANELY tasty chicken, I’ve tried all flavours and they’re all good (though the honey mustard doesn’t have enough sauce to soak into the chips like the other flavours do). The ribs (both pork and beef) have a primo reputation in the area, but I’m most fond of their burgers. A burger artist has designed these bad boys. They haven’t just bought the cheapest buns they could to make more money, they are exceptional, they’re big, and the patties are the bomb. Pay for extra basting on the meat pattie, it takes it to next level. Have never been disappointed by this place. It’s not cheap, but IMO it’s worth it.
Hands down one of the best ribs I've ever had! It's s affordable for something that tastes so amazing. I was recommended to try this place and I'm glad I listened. A look good and sooo cheap :D

As you can see we got enough food for an army. Flavours were good, however some points taken off for execution. Ribs and Honey mustard chicken sauce were slightly too sweet for my liking and Rib meat was a bit chewy not falling off the bone. Riblets were a bit so so and once we had arrived home to Northcote containers had started to sweat making the chips a bit mushy.
Prices are great for size of meals
Great customer service and speed of meal.
Happy to try again in store next time.
Ordered the Beach box and it was great!! Portion size is big (fed a group of 5 and still had heaps of leftovers) , customer service is great, food was also tasty, only thing was that once we dug into the ribs the outside was warm and the inside was getting cold.
Rated 3.5
Ordered their full rack of ribs, onion rings and mushroom chips to takeaway on the weekend. Ribs were yum and well portioned, but it needs to be eaten while it's hot as after it cooled the meat becomes really tough. Onion rings and mushroom chips were fried to perfection, they're a bit too salty for my liking but combined with the sweet sauce from the ribs it's not too overwhelming. Overall a good place when you're craving for ribs and is on a budget.
Never heard of this place but gave it a try and the ribs are amazing, onion rings were even better. Great price for the meal. Very clean easy parking
Best chicken evvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvver decent fries might be a good idea to separate fries and chicken cause of the sauces making fries go soggy, best garlic bread I've had for a long time, would recommend.

Rack n Roll Ribs has become our regular “fast food” for those Friday nights you don’t feel like cooking....we’ve had their ribs; burgers and chicken - all delicious
Recommendation from the family. Simple menu, have had their quarter chicken (first visit) and chicken salad (second visit) both were good. Haven't had the ribs yet although I'm told they are awesome.
Would go back for the chicken. Like the fact it has that flamed grilled flavour.
The go to place before heading to the beach! All served hot and fresh!👌🏼 the flavorful chicken wings compliments the crispy calamari. Perfect pair indeed! Their ribs without a doubt is a must order!😋 not to mention, their food is budget friendly!
Best ribs in Auckland hands down enjoyed everything definitely coming back. Been looking for a nice rib place to eat but now have found it, love the menu especially the rib and the calamari was on fire
Loved the mushroom chips and chicken livers here! I have been going here fairly often after work and the other items on the menu are good too. The malva pudding is a must-have for South African cuisine lovers. The place wasn't too bad for dine-in.
Got 1/2 takeaway at 11:40am. Unfortunately the outside of the ribs was warm and the inside was cold. The marinade and sauce was nice but was not hot so didn't enjoy. Meat was noy succulent and did not fall of the bone. Was hard to tear off (probably bc it was cold)
Best place to get ribs on the shore :) the ribs are always cooked well and covered in a delicious sauce - the lemon chicken is just as amazing too.
This is my local and cannot recommend enough. The owners and staff genuinely care about their customers and their ribs, chips and calamari is 👌👌👌
Best ribs in NZ hands down! Having more help out the front so the orders could go out faster would help with the service. 5/5 food, 3.5/5 service=rating

Came here craving high calorie food on a Sunday after a big weekend 😂 was not disappointed. I got the riblets on onion rings & the chicken tenders on chips and this cost me under $25. Definitely worth the money!
The ribs & the riblets where falling off the bone and full of flavour, everything down to the chips the flavour was there. Would recommend if you are looking for a big feed for cheap
Rib night is always one to look forward to in our house Love rib night
Always fresh and friendly service never disappointed😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Always great service from the staff at rack n roll ribs. Me and my flatmates crave and look forward to our fix of ribs which never disappoints.
Easily the best ribs in Auckland, full of flavour and always juicy. I have no problem travelling from East Auckland to Brown's Bay because the ribs are that damn good and portion size is massive!
I've tried several things on the menu but my go to would have to be the half rack of ribs and half peri peri chicken - just FYI, this is a lot to munch down in one sitting - I usually do it in 2. The peri peri used is amazing and significantly different in taste to Nando's, for example - everyone in my household actually prefers it to Nando's. It's hard to resist their mushroom sauce as well.
I am absolutely stoked to hear that Rack n Roll will be opening in Mount Wellington soon - cannot wait!!!
Ribs are succulent, waiting time spot on and sauce is delicious.
Ribs are the best here and the chips are perfect
When the sauce is on the chips, it soaks in and makes it even that much better.
Ribs are meaty and not dry at all, clean place for sitting down and eating and there are tables
Yummy and delicious ribs and chips, cheaper and better quality than a restaurant.
Absolutely yummyyyyy!
■ Ribs to die for
■ Good pricing
■ Famous Rib burgers
For a first timer who'd never tried ribs, I think I was safe with coming into Rack & Roll to tick off another one on my bucketlist. Their Rib burger was the heartiest, most succulent burger I've had to date.
It's delicious, it's messy and it's definitely not something to have if you wanna keep your outfit clean haha. So portionwise, it was a winner, along with the nice and thickcut chips and onion rings UGH SO GOOD! The only bad thing was that they forgot my friend's aioli...but it was allgood :)
Great food and it was heaps!
Ribs was really nice with the basting used on it and the chicken. You definitely want to try out the Half rack ribs and calamari with onion rings.
If they do double stacked burgers in the future then they would also be big competition for all the burger joints.
Had full rack with calamari with a side of regular chips and had half a chicken with onion rings. To top it off we shared a peppermint crisp. Total $55.
Food was delicious. Chips were crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside with a wonderful seasoning. Chicken was well basted on top of onion rings. The rack of ribs was DELICIOUS to say the least.
Not bad at all considering Spur down the road charges $36 for half a rack and a quarter of the amount of calamari that Rack n Roll charges.
I think this is my favourite place when it comes to ribs and calamari. Their calamari is so crispy and tender in the inside. Their ribs are so well seasoned and juicy. I live out at west and we go here once a month, 30min drive is so worthed! Very recommended
Holy moley. This place is so so so good. You get heaps for what you pay. I got the 1/2 rack and calamari combo and my boyfriend got the rack n roll burger and chips.
Everyone tastes great and the ribs fell off the bone. I will definitely be back for sure.
Best ribs place that i know on the shore. Amazing smokey taste to the bbq sauce which makes it that extra bit delicious. Tender meat + alot of meat on the bone.
Best thing is that the price for the ribs are cheap even with the chips are an absolute steal for what you get.
However the dining in areas not the most appealing, almost too fast food like, so i like to have it takeaway. Overall would recommend if your feeling hungry and meats on your cravings!
Had the pleasure of tasting some rocking soul food last night at Yogi's Dockside Bar.
Rack n Roll ribs had their food truck parked out side and the place was full.
Having tasted the burger, peri peri chicken and the ribs, I can honestly say it was an unforgettable culinary experience.
If you want some awesome ribs in a great location, go to Yogi's Dockside Bar in Fairway Bay, Gulf Harbour and have a great all round experience.
One of the best ribs I've ever try here in NZ. The flavour is awesome and the selection of sides is very good (crumbled mushrooms are my fav). I've been there a couple of times and I can say that is an excellent value for money.
Great job Mark and the team! Keep it up :) Prices are reasonable and food is great quality...... super yum! Loving the food truck too :) Clash on mofo's!
If you want tasty and messy food, this is the place to go. great rib n chip "combo" which don't break the bank considering the portions. On the negative side I would love to get a drink with my meal "combo"... its not really a combo without a drink, to be honest. And buying an individual drink definitely breaks the bank but thankfully theres a newworld behind them which I normally buy drinks from
Had ribs tonite, not bad indeed I think!!
There ribs are good, & are well sauced up.
The aroma coming from shop is gotta be one of the best going around.
Update:
We decided to give R&RR another shot and I'm certainly glad we did. As our previous review touched upon, the food is decent enough and the portions are on the large side - but this time we didn't encounter an absurd wait. We figured we'd phone ahead this time and our food was literally just being brought out to greet us when we arrived. We ordered basically the same food, apart from swapping out the chicken tenders for chicken wings - best decision ever! Their peri-peri wings pack a wallop. A special mention to the girl at the counter too - she earned an extra 0.5 rating all to herself. She was incredibly bubbly and friendly - and she even had the foresight of offering us a doggy bag without us having to ask. We're happy to bump our rating up to 4/5.
Food ordered:
1/2 Rack & Calamari Combo
Full Rack
Chicken Tenders & Chips
1.5L Drink
Bill: $60
Big tummy: Okay, first things first... when we placed our order, we were told that there would be a 20-25min wait. Yeah, it's a bit of a wait, but for slow-cooked ribs, that's kinda expected. However, 45+ minutes later our food still hadn't arrived. It was just short of an hour (52min) when our order was finally called. Actually, scratch that... half of our order arrived. We had to wait another 5min for the second half of the order. What made this worse is that we weren't advised that there would be an exceptionally lengthy wait or anything. If we had been given some notice, we would've at least been more understanding, but instead we were left second-guessing whether our order had gotten misplaced. One thing that amused me is that there is a sign on the wall advising that "during busy times you may experience a wait... but we promise it will be worth it". Sadly, it was not worth it. Yes, the portions are kinda big... but the quality just isn't there to justify the wait. I can think of two places from the top of my head that serve tastier food for cheaper and don't make you wait close to an hour for your order (Meatery in Devonport and Jimmy Jack's Rib Shack in Paihia are still the go-to places for quality meat IMO). Don't get me wrong... the food isn't terrible. But the quality just doesn't justify the experience for me. The highlight of the meal for me was their choice in music (The Doors, Alice Cooper, GnR etc).
Little tummy: I was reeeally craving meat, so we figured we'd try out a new rib joint in RnR Ribs. Sadly though, it just didn't do it for me. Yeah, the portions were pretty big... but the food itself was kinda disappointing. The chicken was ordinary. Even my boyfriend pointed out that it was just like the chicken schnitzel I could cook at home. The calamari was easily the highlight for me. It wasn't too oily and was well-cooked and seasoned. Perhaps most disappointing were the ribs. For a place specialising in ribs, I just felt that they didn't quite cut it with the top rib places around Auckland. Considering we also had to wait close to an hour for our food, I can't really see us coming back.
I have spent over $300 in the past year at this place because this place has absolutely the best ribs in Auckland! Rack n Roll Ribs is a hidden gem in Browns Bay serving the best of South African cuisine which includes a lot of grilling.
The pork ribs are cooked intensely with the sauce making them super succulent and wholly flavorsome. The meat is easily pulled apart and has a grill flavor that leaves you wanting for more. For $24 for a whole rack, this is great value for money and can easily feed 2-3 people or even a family! Also, the ribs are always cooked to perfection.
The chicken is also bloody fantastic with different flavor to choose from. The chicken when cooked right is super moist and the grilled skin with the sauce becomes something magical, and even better than Nandos if i can say so. But sometimes the chicken is cooked too long here but it is still gobsmackingly amazing. Other dishes like the calamari, garlic bread and onion rings are fantastic. The way they present the food is also different in those paper boxes.
Flavor-wise this place is a beast, with good value for money and generous proportion sizes. Only negative here is that they can take a bit longer due to cooking time and number of orders. Nevertheless, one of the best BBQ places in NZ.
this place is very very gooooooooooood.. ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... u godda try it
Went here for the first time tonight with my partner, the restaurant is very clean and tidy. They mostly do takeaways though as there was only one couple eating in. The man who took our order was very helpful describing how big the portions etc were and was really nice too. We ended up ordering a full rib stack, a half rib stack, chips and onion rings. It was all really yummy, I only wish there was more sauce! We will definitely be back!
Omg the ribs are great ... burgers are massive and full of flavor and the calamari is really good as well. Recommended to everyone that wants a real tasty rib meal and more.
I love ribs so much and have been going here for a while, it is my go to place for getting quick yummy ribs. Looks like they changed the interior since I last went, there's way more space to sit down and eat. I got a half rack with chips which is $15 and cheesy bacon garlic bread for $7. The ribs are delicious as usual (nice and meaty with BBQ sauce smothered on them) and the garlic bread was good too, but maybe a bit expensive as its only 4 pieces and smaller than I remember. You may want to call up and order around dinner time, my wait time was 25 mins but I overheard other people waiting for 50 mins. One downside was the lady charged $3 for a can of coke even though the price said $2.50 😐. All in all great takeout place to get ribs!
I love ribs, and I love the ribs here. It's a little pricey, and the wait time is a little longer than say waiting for a pizza, but it's worth it. Some people say it's messy, but hey - that's just how it's done!
Noticed this place while ordering pizza, so decided to come and try them. Wow this is just what Browns Bay needed i think. Reasonably priced food & being a self acclaimed Pork Rib expert these sticky meaty rib1s are tasty, chicken moist & very tasty. you will need a few napkins i will warn you
We had lunch from the Rack N Roll Ribs the other day. We ordered the 1/2 rack and 1/2 chicken combo ($25) with a large fries ($6.50). The Peri Peri chicken was succulent and spicy, and consumed very rapidly. The ribs were smothered in a tangy BBQ sauce and were meltingly delicious. The fries were chunky and a perfect accompaniment to the chicken and ribs. The food is absolutely delicious, of generous portions, and good value for money. When in Browns Bay we recommend you try this place out.
Highly recommended for best ribs ever. You will not be disappointed. The portion we had was half a rack and that was more than enough. Service was great and the place is nice and clean.

Had the best and most moist, tender rips on Friday nite. What an asset to Browns Bay. My wife had the chicken burger, one of the best she had in awhile. We'll be back. ...
The BEST Ribs! And The BEST Burgers too! Clean smart looking and super friendly staff. A great quick meal choice! Try once and you'll be back!
Yep eat here minimum 2 times a week, awesome food mouth watering tender ribs and spicy chicken wings worth every cent. Love this place and recommend it to everyone , took my mate from Aussie here and he was blown away a keeps talking about it. Visit rack and roll you will not be disappointed .
Outstanding ribs! I've had probably every thing on the menu now and everything is just awesome! Such good food, worth every $$. Just down the road from home, my whole flat are all regulars here
We got the ribs, onion rings, mushrooms, and chips. We got them takeaways to eat out on the beach. Although one of the better ribs places out for takeaways, I felt that the ribs weren't as tender as previous visits pre COVID. Still a good place to grab a quick fix if craving ribs on a lazy Sunday.
Best ribs I’ve ever eaten, had an awful experience with another ribs place that night and drove here to get some better rib. They sure didn’t disappoint, it really brightened the mood and reminded me to not go to other ribs places. The riblets were my favorite with a delicious sauce and the ribs were amazing as well, all freshly cooked and delicious. Been here many times and never let me down.
Listen, this place isn’t going to win any interior decoration awards. Was a bit worried when I walked in and saw the 2 tables, but stayed for the food and decided to give it a chance.
Glad I did, because the food was delicious. Onion rings were a great addition to the ribs and chicken wings. Staff was super helpful as well. Low expectations, but pleasantly surprised. Will be back.
Please train your cashier to call out orders when they are ready. She goes to the kitchen, collects the order and brings it out to the front. Leaves it on the bench. Immediately switches her attention to a person wanting to order for 10 minutes. While my food is sitting on the bench. Email said food will take 30 minutes. It took me an hour. That extra 10 minutes because of cashier incompetence is frustrating when you’re hungry.
Edit: I have updated my review from 1 star based on the business response. The wait is ok. The front of house just need to be trained on calling out orders when they bring it out from the kitchen, instead of letting it sit cold on the counter and switching attention to take new orders. I really hope nobody lost their job last night…
Got a Mates Meal box (Ribs, Onion Rings, Coleslaw and Chips) with a side of Chicken Wings (Lemon and Herb) for dinner with friends.
Plenty of food for 4x people, massive ribs! Lots of chips with great seasoning, onion rings and coleslaw nice to have on the side too. Wings choice of Lemon and Herb had a nice flavour, with all meat cooked well - nothing dry or over-done.
Will return again for another box next time!
Phoned ahead to order - was ready in 20 minutes on a mid-week night.
Plenty of items on the menu to choose from, all of which sounds delicious. We got the rack of ribs, added fries and onion rings. Generous servings, enough for 3 people. The ribs were nice and soft, very tasty. Not too overwhelming. Hot chips were cooked and salted perfectly, nice crunch and soft inside. Surprise fav were the onion rings. A little oily but suited very well with the ribs. Not a lot of seating inside but the beach is only a stroll away.
Tasty and tender ribs. Sharing plate was generous amount. Good for 4 people
The best Southern Africa-styled grilled ribs I ever had around North Shore. It tastes like the way butcher slaughters pig with draining blood out. Much tasty much appreciated!
Delicious takeaway spot. The price can be seen as expensive but its worth it. Ribs are tender and flavorful, chips are always delicious and the burgers have an awesome grilled taste and they are big! Onion rings are also a very nice side to have!
Loved it.. a bit pricey $60 for a mates deal box but didn't mind as it was very tasty. Will be back again for sure.
Great place when you need to satisfy a meat craving! Not the greatest ribs ever, but tasty enough and good for the price. Their chips are awesome, love the seasoning on them. Their burgers are pretty awesome too!!
Totally worth it! The burger was huge. The quarter chicken is good enough to share. The spices and flavour is super tasty. The ribs are soft and melts in your mouth. You can buy one of the combos, have some sides to it and your meal for the entire day is sorted. Listen to what the people are saying folks. They serve great food in here.
The food is great. Simple, well prepared and well priced.
However, service is a little slow. The night I purchased was not that busy, yet it took 35 minutes to prepare a 1/2 rack and chips.
It makes me slightly reluctant to go there again unless I have plenty of time.
