Just fabulous and awesome venue. Definitely my waterhole next time I am in Carterton. Great staff, our waitress was absolutely awesome as we had her in fits of laughter. Venue is great, cater for kids too as we had 2 boys ( Thank you for the lollies that you had given them at the end of the night as a treat for they're manners) Food was scrumptious, as for that Lemon possit? Gosh I loved!!! I definitely recommend that pudding? Can I have the recipe please hahaha. It was a good finish to a working day for my partner and his colleague. Lucky I had seen as we are from Rotorua and we were looking for somewhere to have dinner, then I saw Balter so we walked in, good decision! I would recommend to anyone that is visiting Carterton. I can't get enough of the pork belly, highly recommend. I hàve tried other lovely dishes on thier menu but wow wow wow can't brag about it enough!!!! Amazing place to go in our lovely little town :)
I'm not big on writing reviews but I had to come on to rate the excellent experience we had Valentine's Day. I've been many times to have great service and food but on Valentine's the food was exceptional and the whole venue with music, roses and a free cocktail knocked my thoughts of this place out of the park. Faultless
Balter is a great place for a tasty meal. Delicious food, wonderful atmosphere and the best service. A yummy menu selection including fab desserts and a good selection of beer and wine. 16 of us on a busy night and all went well. Thank you Kylie and everyone at Balter.
One of the best bars we've tried while traveling NZ. You get a warm welcome here & a great choice of seating. We loved the little touches in the decor & the games available to while away a couple of hours. We visited with family and the menu had great choices for everyone. The main menu has sharing plates ranging from pork belly, lamb tacos to squid. All cooked beautifully. The steaks & burgers were also cooked to request and were enjoyed by all. There is a good choice of beer & wine. This is a great addition to Carterton and we will definitely come back next time we visit NZ. Thank you!
What a great place! A unique spot in the middle of Carterton. Delicious food, tasty beers, and magnificent music. But it is the boundless energy of the staff that makes the place, perpetuating the happy, friendly, relaxed atmosphere. A great place for Mothers' Day Brunch - amazing food and great staff!!! I just had the most delicious Eggs Benny I have ever tasted! And the aioli sauce they serve with their fries is to die for! Can't wait to visit again!
Wow what a place. Welcomed with open arms by Kylie and Simon, and well looked after by the staff. We were a table of 16 and they coped with us effortlessly, it was so relaxing and the food was amazing. Brillant addition to Carterton and I would highly recommend it to everyone
Perfect place for Carterton, great vibe, decor, tapas, beers, ciders, coffee and service! Have had a sunny afternoon in the garden bar with live music and a cosy evening with the heaters and blankies out there too! I will be back for breakfast and have no doubt it will be just as good!
Popped into Balter to check it out, ended up staying for dinner! A great selection of beers, some on tap and many by the bottle. We shared a few plates from the tapas menu - well prepared, tasty and generous portions - value for money. Service was friendly and fast. Wine list is largely drawn from NZ producers, showing examples of various varieties, but if you're a Riesling drinker you'll be out of luck! Could hold its own with some of the small, trendy bars in Wellington, a really great addition to the Carterton high street. Keep it up!!!
Great new place for Carterton and the Wairarapa. Wide selection of craft beers and some nice wines, excellent small plates and desserts (and brunch at the weekend), welcoming and friendly atmosphere, regular live music, decent coffee, a beer garden out of back, and great service. We've been twice; the first time was very good and the second time was even better.
Great food and amazing service. The best salt and pepper squid you will ever have. This is city quality food, a real asset to the Wairarapa.

Went last night for our first time. Was amazing atmosphere. It was extremely busy and staff & chief worked well under the pressure smiling staying bubbly throughout the evening. The minute you walk in the door you are transported to another world. You could be in any upbeat cafe bar in a city anywhere in the world. Very cleverly designed and exactly what Carterton was missing. Well done.
Amazing!!!! Just love everything about this place! The kids loved it and I really could enjoy my food with the kids entertained with their colouring pages! Thanks For creating such a wonderful atmosphere and super delicious food! X

Was in Carterton area for a week and a half and was compelled to visit this amazing place on more than one occasion
The smoked meats made it an absolute definite to at least try but after visiting the first time we were hooked to the flavour as well as the warmth the staff showed us. The brisket really did deliver and I also enjoyed breakfast there on more than 1 occasion. Shout out to the chefs that deliver the amazing tastes that this place prides itself on
Was even able to find them at the local balloon glow fest that same week and got a chance to try them again….the stuff that comes out that smoker is to DIE for…

We had this place hired for our small wedding dinner. The staff were exceptional and made every attempt to get things right. They were prompt, and the food came out on time, and everyone was eating together. Couldn't have asked for more. And the food was a hit with everyone. No complaints from our guests.

The team at Balter are making food you will not be replicating at home, in a cosy and friendly environment.
Make sure you take their recommendations on their signature dishes, flaming cheese does exactly what it says on the tin and the flavours are fantastic.
If you have a sweet tooth, this lot will see to it that you will never want to leave.
They cater for all food allergies, even whipped up a brand new dessert for me when they found their existing selection wouldn’t suit me.
Cannot recommend this place highly enough!
I'm sitting in front of Balter's comfortable fireplace while I write this.
It's easy to drive past Balter if you don't know it's here because it has a narrow frontage. Don't miss it! -- it's huge inside, with a fantastic menu.
The proprietors are really friendly, and the food is delicious. I can recommend their Eggs Benedict and their Fried Chicken Burger. The chef has a way of selecting intriguing flavors to accompany the food.
Their menu will be expanding into new areas soon. I will definitely be back to try it out.
This isn't Fast Food, so make sure you leave yourself time to enjoy the experience. Menu prices are very reasonable, for what you get.
Balter is a great reason to visit Carterton.
Absolutely delicious and extremely enjoyable experience at Balter Kitchen. A lucky find when passing through Carterton, excellent service, friendly staff, delicious high end food, craft beer and cider. Caters well to vegetarians and plenty of meat to choose from. The flaming cheese entree is a win. Highly recommend
Under new ownership, def going back for date night. The gin cocktails were strong and interesting choices to pick from. Food and drink menu looks really interesting and there's alot to try. Service and atmosphere are excellent.
Didn't quite get 5 stars as there were a few minor things I would have liked to see with the food before giving 5/5. Looking forward to my next visit!!!
We had so much fun. The new BBQ menu was amazing - we shared short and pork ribs and they tasted amazing, going really well with the pickles and seasonal veg. My gin cocktail was very tasty. We were able to order off the 'normal' menu for dessert and both got the cheesecake. Very impressive and super tasty without being too sweet. Highly recommended, including as someone who's gluten free.
Enjoyed a great Fathers Day breakfast here last weekend. So tasty, fresh & different to other breakfasts in the area. Yummy coffee & friendly service. Stopped in for lunch yesterday and had a tasty bite & beer with great service even with the festival on. Can’t wait to come back for dinner soon.
My partner & I, thoroughly enjoyed our delicious meal and drinks on our anniversary on our holiday away from work stress.
2 groups of tipsy woman so very noisy but otherwise very nice. Wagu meat pattie on the burger was enjoyed by my wife and the lamb shank was very tender and tasty. Service was excellen. Great for a special nite out
Went out of there way to accommodate us with the menu. Let us choose off the dinner menu it was no trouble and this was Sunday afternoon... our waiter was super friendly and was really helpful ... we had little ones with us and this was no problem food was delicious we will be back.
What a find! Absolutely stoked that a business like Balter Bar & Kitchen can be found in small town NZ.
The service is second to none but the food, well it's as good as any southern, bbq joint we've ever had. Anywhere! This is high quality Kai. Absolutely scrumptious. From the ceviche to the chicken, brisket or Mac 'n cheese. Can't wait to fine again.

Beautifully greeted upon entry. Fantastic decor. Our meal was delicious! Had a wickedly delightful Chai Latte. Food was quick considering there was a few full tables. Would absolutely recommend. One of the the better places to dine in Carterton. Thanks team at Balter Bar & Kitchen.
Amazing food, good drinks selection, attentive staff, good vegeterian options, sunny courtyard and play space for kids. Will make a point of stopping and booking ahead next time we are in town. Food was quick to come out despite being super busy.
Beautiful food! I had the salmon bruschetta and partner had the smoked beef brisket eggs Benedict. We both thought it was the best meal we have purchased in a long long time. Would recommend this place very much! And would definitely go back
Outstanding new bar in Carterton. Grown-up, suave, elegant & beautifully decorated and kitted out. The garden/outside area looks fun. Extensive craft beer selection and the most delicious tapas menu. The pork, the squid & the scallops and black pudding were total stand-outs for me. The service was smooth, swift and unobtrusive; the staff friendly, welcoming and gave just the right level of attentiveness. Good music too. In the words of "Arnie" ... I'll be back.
Nice big space, when we arrived it was empty but got almost full before we left, the caramel latte I ordered wasn't too sweet, which I totally loved. The place in general felt humid and cold since they didn't have any heater running but they put it on before we left, kids friendly, enough space if you're bringing a pram
The fenugreek curry leaf flavoured roasted potatoes are inspired. I'm definitely going to make these at home. The maple French toast was the best I've ever had, absolutely delicious. The coffee with the reindeer latte art was excellent. Five star 🌟 without a shadow of a doubt.
