This place is one of the best place to eat Afgan food in Christchurch specially if you are looking for halal. They have a fixed menu which they serve $40. The food is sufficient for three people. You get confused once you enter the restaurant as there is staff to assign you tables but you can catch up after a quick observation. The chef is a multi talented person who is cooking food, serving food, taking payments, giving out takeaways all together. He greets you with a smile and is nice to talk to. This is a must visit place.
One of the best Afghani restaurants, huge portions and wonderful tastes. Recommended over many other Indian restaurants, the owner was generous and very friendly.
The food is so good that my mouths watering thinking about it right now and i would Wana go to Christchurch for it!!! It's not the fanciest place to sit n eat but if you're a foodie you wouldn't care cz the food will blow your mind!! The gentleman behind the counter is a sweetheart and takes great pleasure in serving and cooking for people!
Absolutely delicious food. Grilled meat with butter rice, salad and curry. So divine. Bit of waiting time especially at dinner time but definitely worth it. Big portion and yummy food.
Came in here as another restaurant I was looking for was closed so popped in here ,the owner and chef loaded me with curry and rice and kebabs, salad, kebabs were tasty and rice cooked well and nice curry and portion size was massive as well as salad that I got .The price was quite reasonable for how much food I actually got, food for 2 days not 1
Interesting place. The food is enormous, cooked perfectly, yummy to your tummy but (too many buts) you will never know when you can make it here. Not even the person who owns it. It is open at his wish. It doesn't give you great ambience :) Don't be disappointed if you want to taste the food no matter what. Menu is decided by him. He brings you your meal. There is no choice. And above al of this you will fall in love for the food he provides :-)
An experience!
Ring in advance to make sure they're open! The open hours/ days are, at best, a rough approximation. This can be endearing or irritating - depending on your sensibility. And that's AFG in a nutshell.
Our table, resplendent in a thick, clear plastic cloth wore the remnants of the previous diners. The hospitality of the owner is warm and welcoming. He's a larger than life character. You are bade to sit, "I will cook for you" and then food starts to arrive. There's no menu, no ordering. Firstly, a simple green salad ( - it bore our only choice of the evening- chilli sauce or not?) Then a bowl of mild tomato based curry sauce - with chicken drums. Finally a massive platter with a rice base, it was adorned with two huge ground lamb kebabs, multiple grilled chicken pieces and three large grilled tomato. $35 for two and then we took home as much as we ate.
Great value, good fun. Ideal locale for a group function.
Authentic cuisine from Afghanistan. The owner is also the chef and is a very friendly guy. The menu has limited choices but portions are large and the food is outstanding. The ambience needs an uplift. Highly recommend.
Really yummy authentic food, one of our regular dining choices. Love the fact there's no menu, you just take a seat & the food arrives, the kids love it too.
My weekly kebab joint bro.
Excellent authentic food. The staff a friendly but can appear seedy and upfront to the uninitiated but they keep it real.
AFG is for real g's.
Went for dinner with a friend because it came highly recommended by another friend. Weren't sure at first because the shop does look.. a little crummy? from the outside. But I was keen to try the souvlaki so we went in. Ordered a small lamb souvlaki each but they didn't have any bread (this seems to happen often looking at past reviews?) so had it with huge portions of rice and some chicken pieces- owner recommended it with lamb. Had two small sides of salad and one small, slightly spicy curry plate with chicken bits to have with the rice for $30. Initially, I thought we ordered only the souvlaki and the other things were just given as he just kept offering us things. Read the two reviews above and realized that it was a set meal. Food was excellent and the guy was very friendly. But because he can't speak English very well, if you are only after the souvlaki (like we were in the beginning) just decline the other things or have it to go? There aren't many seats- 3-4 big tables but all the people there seemed to be locals. I agree with the other reviewers: don't let the outer appearance fool you.
Went here last night after reading the good review. Food was delicious and the service was great, really friendly. It is like a set menu, you go in and take a seat and they bring you the food after about 5-10 minutes! You don't order yourself. We didn't get a naan as they didn't have any available, but he said next time to call and order one in advance. We had the kebabs on rice (a huge platter), two salads and a curry and also two drinks, all for $32!
It's not somewhere I would normally go, as it looks pretty rough from the outside and isn't the best looking from the inside either, but I am really glad we tried it out!
Will definitely be back!
I have been going here for years now. This is genuine Afghan cuisine, food made with love and passion. From the simple yet perfect spiced skewered meats to the fluffy buttery rice.
It is quite unrefined as far as décor goes but he has made a great effort for someone who I think came here speaking little English. His English is still broken and can be hard to have a full conversation, though he is always friendly and willing to chat away while preparing the food.
It is almost a set menu, with chicken or lamb or mix kebabs flame cooked on metal skewers, then sitting on the bed of consistently perfect rice, along with a fresh side salad.
In the occasional days he will have a delicious and quite hot curry available too. And if lucky enough he will have been baking Afghan naan breads!! Huge in size and just superb in taste and texture, try and buy a few to take home if you're there when bread is available.
Don't be offput by the shop not looking picture perfect from the street, as the food and owners personality more than make up for these details. Forever recommended!!
Authentic Afghan food.
You know it’s good when the locals eat here
Heaven on a plate and their curry is to die for..
Make sure you tell them how many people are eating otherwise you won’t be fed!
Resturant looks like it’s straight from origin.
5 stars on their food and experience.
Meal for 1 is $21
The food here is remarkable. Everything has so much flavour.
There is no menu. You will just say how many portions, and you will receive rice with lamb and chicken kebab, chicken thigh curry, and a salad.
Every element of the meal has a lot of flavour, and the portion sizes are huge.
For $21 (recently increased from $20), you can not go wrong.
It is well worth the queue and wait, although if you don't want to wait as long you can dine in, and take your own takeaway containers for the leftovers.
Excellent experience with this afghan good. I guess is high ratings is indeed not an over rating.
The rice is really nice and chicken curry is fantastic. A big serving and highly recommended
Bloody delicious! Very generous portion and food is really good. You can go on “IS AFG Open” on Facebook to see if the restaurant will be open. The line moves slow so be ready to wait if the queue is long.
The food here is really mindblowingly good. The lamb and chicken kebab is so tender and flavourful and the curry is packed with a punch. The only caveat is the long wait, we waited for 1.5 hours for our food and the dine in customers got their food before us. I would suggest that you try to find a dine in seat the moment you reach the restaurant to avoid the long wait at the takeout line. Despite the long wait, I believe you should definitely give this place a go at least one in Christchurch. The food is too good, it’s worth the wait.
Best of best meal i ever had in Newzealand.
Really taste of charcoal in meat.
Meal was so big can't finish myself.
I bought two meals for two people. Couldn't even finish one lol.
This guy is very humble and professional in his skills!!
Very reasonable price, can't believe this price in 2023.
He knows what to feed to people!!
Long queue in his restaurant shows that he is an incredible person. 👏
I would say, if you come to Christchurch, must come to AFG. Please confirm by call them or checkout a IS AFG OPEN page on facebook.
Thanks to feed us man!! Love your delicious food.
They only serve one meal set with generous amount of food, normally 2-persons feed 3, and 3 feed 4.
The meal comes with 3 dishes, salad, lamb and chicken kebab with rice, and chicken thigh curry.
Don’t overestimate your good appetite, you just won’t handle the amount.
For anyone reading - you get a lot of food, the food is yum, and good quality. However, keep in mind it is very spicy. My 11 year old loved every bit of it, but the rest of us struggled.
Expect a wait. I got there at 5.10 and the restaurant opened at 5.30. I was 7th in line, and left with my food at about 5.45.
Best ever chicken curry and kebab I've tasted, loved how polite and friendly he was, recommend it 10/10
I always get dinner from this place when I’m in Christchurch. If you have sometime on hand and are willing to stand in the queue for an hour, don’t hesitate. The taste outweighs the time spent on queue😅 If you’re hungry and wanna eat, just dine in. You get food faster that way.
