Overall a really fantastic wee cafe, great for brunch or if you just want to grab a coffee. Is usually quite busy, so be sure to get in early or even call in to secure a table for yourselves!!
This is a fantastic cafe. The Manager is really friendly and welcoming along with her staff. The food is always delicious and coffee perfect. Also child friendly, with toys and books to keep your children happy :) I would totally recommend trying out this gem of a cafe if you haven't already.
Ristretto have a great team and feel to their business. Best coffee in Christchurch hands down and great food. We travel about 50km 1 way to go there as often as we can. I only buy my coffee beans from them. Well worth the effort!

sounds like a wonderful place, we will certainly be trying this café out, when we come down to Christchurch in September, sounds like the food is wonderful, and the staff are great, looking forward to our visit.

Such an awesome place to visit. Great atmosphere and very friendly staff! Will be back when we visit NZ again. We came with 2 kids age 5 yrs old and 11 months old and they loved it especially the play are.
Amazing food, I'd never seen bacon and egg served like this before, it was fantastic! Very friendly service. Looking forward to visiting again.
The owner is a lovely friendly person as are all the staff. The coffee is fantastic. It would seem that some parents that visit cafes needs some parenting skills before they step out of the house. A little consideration of others would be nice. I will continue to buy my coffee here as I always have and would urge others to do the same. I recall visiting a couple of years ago with a group of school children on a visit to the park across the street. I had coffee and asked the children to wait outside. The owner came out and gave each child a marshmallow, which was a wonderful gesture and a true reflection of the person she is. If you can't control your children stay at home.
It is very unfortunate that some inconsiderate mothers have made bad comments on this cafe because they got their knickers in a twist, when their presumably unruly kids spoilt other people's experience in this cafe. Their comments unfortunately only show their immaturity and pettiness.....if they don't like it then don't go there again and make it more pleasant for the other customers .......easy!!
I applaud the owner asking them to leave to improve the experience for the other customers. Unfortunately, too often, single people and parents who raise their children with adequate discipline have to suffer bad experiences of undisciplined children due to irresponsible parenting and no regard for other people's feelings.
I will now add this cafe to my list of places I must visit!!!
Never been here but will the next time I am in the Garden City to occupy a table and show the obvious caring staff and owner the real people occupy this planet too

Wonderful food, I agree with the previous review on the mushroom toast. This is also the best coffee I have had recently in Christchurch. I will be back!!!
They Make the Best mushrooms on toast, Always great service and very friendly and welcoming staff. Often bring my grandmother here as she loves Mushrooms to.
Coffees were excellent and decor was tidy and warm on the colder day that we visited. Probably one of the best coffees I've had in Christchurch. A very nice roast with the beans, and the barista is excellent at what they do. The only thing stopping a five-star review was the food ordered (scrambled eggs w/ bacon, mushrooms and a big breakfast), the sausages and hash-browns were a bit tasteless. The seasoning on the mushrooms was fantastic (one of my favorites) , and the touch of what we thought was cinnamon in the scrambled eggs was a nice addition of flavor. The counter treats that we ordered were lovely as well (a chocolate tart with strawberries and kiwifruit). The chocolate wasn't too dark and overpowering, and the fruit complemented the chocolate and short pastry tart nicely.
Me and my partner were on our way to the park and decided to stop at this cafe for breakfast. We also had an entertainment book voucher.
We ordered an espresso porridge, a big breakfast, a scone, a smoothie and a coffee. The lady at the cash register was so friendly and attentive. I was blown away by the quality of the service! My porridge and drinks arrived promptly but I think they forgot about our big breakfast. As soon as we reminded them it came out within 5 min! My porridge was to die for and my partner really enjoyed his breakfast meal. The coffee was nice and hot, the way I like it! Overall I found this cafe food and service to be outstanding and the bonus is the prices are very reasonable.
We are going back as soon as my partner is back in Christchurch.
Just one small suggestion is to add a bit more lighting at those tables at the back, it was hard to read a paper there but it could be just me :)
I visit here regularly (at least once a week) and every time I am happy with the food, coffee and the service. If you are visiting for breakfast/brunch they have a breakfast menu which goes until 2pm. The mushrooms on toast are the best!! Always order a bowl coffee - if you don't you will just end up going back for another! Food in the cabinet would have to be some of the best I have come across (and I travel nationwide for my job, so spend a fair bit of time in cafes, working out what I want to eat) - I'm pretty picky and usually only find one or two things I like but Ristretto always have plenty of options!
If I had a recommendation for the café, it would be that there is little suitable seating for when you book as a group - the table that is allocated for a group booking is small and a tight fit. You will just have to expand, so I can bring all of my friends for coffee and cake!! Highly recommend A+A+A+A+A+A+
Was a regular here for a good wee while whilst living in the area. Me and my partner love coming here, the coffee is always amazing and theres always a yummy selection of cheap n tasty slices. Such a great place to meet up with friends for a PERFECT coffee everytime.

We went to Ris'tretto for brunch last saturday and were thrilled with the fantastic experience we had.
We arrived soon after they opened, ravenous after some early morning exercise. We had a 21 month old with us.
The food in the cabinet looked very appetising but we wanted something more substantial. My husband and I both ordered off the menu and were trying to find something suitable for our child. The staff were very attentive and offered to cook something basic especially for her - thinking outside the square was something we really appreciated, especially when dining with a child!
The coffee arrived first and was perfect. Mu husband ordered the big breakfast and reported it to be delicious, I had the french toast with banana and bacon and would throughly recommend it! Fantastic! Generous portions, beautifully plated up, and really yummy! Our daughter devoured her meal too.
The atmostphere was very relaxed - it was great to have the paper to read.
The childrens play area was a real bonus and meant we could enjoy a leisurely meal while our child was happily playing.
We'll certainly be back.

I just happened to be passing and the restaurant looked cosy and inviting so I went in and I will be encouraging the staff from Nurse Maude and friends to visit and have a great meal and time.
I seldom leave a review of any café but everything in Ris'tretto is 10 out of 10! Amazed by the food and coffee. The service is over 5 stars as I felt spoilt and warmed by the staff's smile and kindness.
The Dutch lady was so welcoming which made all the difference. Great coffee and atmosphere. Does not have discount on own keep cup yet. The seats are very comfortable and there is outside seating in fine weather. There were bananas on one of the tables. The man working at the front of the shop didn't know what they were for. He could have find out for me but he didn't. Not to worry though. Be aware there is only one toilet in the cafe. But there are public ones in the park across the road. Steam tends to build up inside the windows on cooler days. This is a very popular cafe and it is next to a shopping centre in st Albans.

To be honest, I'm blown away by the amazing service of the team. I was met by a warm greeting and big smile on each staff. Haven't felt so welcome to a cafe before. I am 100% willing to recommend five stars to anyone.

Friendly staff, I just pop in to takeaway coffee and slice but lots cabinet food option! I would definitely be back to try breakfast and other food. They are also dog friendly, water bowl and home made dog treat!

I have been coming to Ristretto for years. Great coffee and service, with a cozy venue, which is also child friendly and sporting a little kids corner. The team cook amazing breakfasts and lunches, from scrambled eggs to open chicken sandwiches. They also have a great selection of healthy and not so healthy cabinet food, to cater for everyone.

Excellent service, delicious cappuccinos, tasty pastries. Staff were very accommodating of our young daughter's wish to sit at her own table so she could charge/play with her iPad without being interrupted by adults' conversations. :)

Great little gem in st Albans. Amazing staff, very friendly and helpful, kids and pups are well pampered (small play pen for toddlers). Coffee is good, fresh scones are great and in general the food is pretty nice. Definitely recommend.
Excellent breakfast today. Chicken pesto dish was delicious thank you. Apparently Creamy Mushrooms were lovely too. Staff were very polite and helpful. I personally thanked them for their excellent food and service. Highly recommend. To top it off we sat outside on a gorgeous 19oC warm morning. Perfect!

We had a brunch today and it was amazing. We were a table of 5, and the cafe was full when we arrived. But what made our experience awesome was the friendly and welcoming greetings we received, the beautiful service (the food was really nice too) and the personal attention that we (and I assume everyone else) in a full cafe received. It felt personal, without being intrusive, and 'old school' service in the nicest possible way! Highly recommend, and we will definitely be back!
