Went here for lunch with a large group of people, the staff were lovely and the meals were great and came out very fast. They made a special vegan meal for me which was delicious. Highly recommended :-)
Wonderful, quick & efficient service on the night of an AB game. Special treatment for Aussies wanting fresh oysters, so generous of staff & chef.. highly recommend
The best cooked pork I'd ever had! Hubby loved his bluff oysters, chips & fish! Very friendly staff & a great atmosphere - we will be back, even just try every dessert on the menu!
After spending five months in New Zealand and having to return to the US, we chose to spend our last weekend in Dunedin. Ironic Cafe was a wise choice for one of our last meals in country. We splurged on the Bluff oysters, which were delicately breaded. The Bluff oysters did not disappoint. I have had oysters on all three coasts of the US and until now believed that oysters from the Gulf of Mexico can not be beat. I can no longer say that. The oysters were creamy and perfectly cooked. They are a pricey treat, but not to be missed. We also had to have a cheese roll, aka Southland sushi. This is a Kiwi treat that we will be making at home. Ironic's version did not dissapoint. Oysters and cheese rolls are an interesting combination, but for us it was perfect. Ironic Cafe was a great choice for us an the wait staff are awesome!
A great find. My oyster and blue cod salad and chips meal was great. Best oysters I've had in a while. Will come back next time I'm in town to try the coffee and more tempting food.

Our waiter was absolutely great. Food de'lish. Lovely place
Thoroughly recommend the Harbourfeast and a glass of mulled wine ... delicious
Lovely food, nice presentation, quick service and a delightful waitress.
We held yet another family function at this cafe last weekend. Great food and wine on offer, and excellent and friendly service from the staff. Thanks Ironic 😀
Nice entree and nice dessert!
The Thai curry was unfortunately not Thai curry but bland coconut milk. Look like the curry was forgotten 😂 pumpkin was tasty though.
Staff was incredible kind and gorgeous, beautiful sweet ladies.
👌❤️👌
We all gathered at Ironic after a Funeral. The service was epic and the food was so tasty and yummy; presented beautifully. My salmon roulade was absolutely Delicious and has to be one of my favourite meals I've eaten in a very very long time. I loved the decor and the outside area. I very much enjoyed my beers and food and highly recommend Ironic for a cold Beer, wine, hot drink or something tasty To Eat from the Cabinets or from the menu.
I will definitely be back next time im in Dunners.
Isn't it ironic ? 😏 😘
We went on Mother's day for lunch. A busy day with heavy bookings due to graduation 🎓 and Mother's day. Staff were friendly and when we arrived without a booking they bent over backwards to fit us in outside and offered a heater and blankets to keep warm.
Food came in reasonable time. We ordered from lunch menu, kids menu and cabinet food. Our family of 4 enjoyed their meals.
Had the Korean Chicken burger and chips. it was OK as a burger but definitely not worth the price at 26 dollars. Especially when cableways does a better Korean fried chicken burger chips and a pint of beer for 25 dollars. Mum however loved the lambs fry and dad enjoyed his eggs benedict.
What an amazing dinner we had last night at Ironic! Every single meal was incredible (especially the cauliflower entree, lamb and chicken mains and chocolate dome desert) Service was super friendly and it was lovely sitting in front of the fire after dinner with a wine. Ironic never fails to impress. Looking forward to our next visit there! Thanks for a great night!
Awesome dinner! Party of 6 on a quiet Saturday night. Delicious food and the service from Charlotte was brilliant. A dining experience worth the money.
Awesome place, can see why it is one ofthe best cafes in the country. Their service is excellent and menu has something for everyone. Their dinner menu is very good and the Pork Hock is incredible!! It is one the best dishes I have ever had in a restaurant!!
Truly lovely time! We were a large group, but food arrived promptly (rosti is to die for!) And the staff were lovely.
Bright and airy with lots of windows around and above. Two sofas by a fireplace and padded seating along one wall complement the 20 or so wooden tables so it’s perfect for couples dining in or groups of friends hanging out. I went there for breakfast, which was wonderful (banana pancakes and mochaccino, plus a green smoothie to ease my guilt over the sugar). Fun decorations - plants on the wall, a portrait of Frida Kahlo, and a silly painting of a girl wearing a mask. Service was quick and friendly. They do takeaway as well but if you’ve come all this way (it’s kind of tucked away in an industrial area across from the old train station) you should dine in. You’ll like it.
Lovely cafe, good coffee, and delicious breakfast. Had the famous breakfast stack, great choice even if you are on a diet: vegie, egg, healthy fat (avocardo), protein (poached egg+biersticks), carb (sourdough)~ And its conveniently right across from train station and Sat Market.
Delicious food! They were really busy, but the wait wasn't long at all and the team were in good spirits despite being rushed off their feet
A great place to grab a coffee and settle in for a good chat. I've been here for breakfast (past visit and excellent) but the last visit was for a coffee and a gab... Both of which were great. Service was fabulous.
Went there for lunch, food was very “meh,” meaning, for the price, the food didn’t have the “wow” you might expect, though it might just be me since I’ve been to a lot of very good and comparably better priced restaurants and cafés. The service and atmosphere was pretty good, which is definitely a plus!
Tasty brunch and great coffee. Took quite a bit of time to get served because they told us to "take a seat" and then focused exclusively on about 3 groups of people who walked in after us and ordered at the counter. Had to go up to the counter to order in the end.
The coffee was really good when it arrived and the brunch food was delicious. Decor was cool and a nice atmosphere. So close to a 5 but the unfocused service thing meant it just felt short.
Service: Thanks for the great friendly service. We were a group of 3, one with gluten allergies, the other with dairy and egg allergies.
The staff helped checking all our orders and everything came out perfect.
Location ✭✭✭✭✭ : Located 2 mins away from the train station it provides easy access for those that require shelter from the rain coming out from the journey.
Ambience ✭✭✭✭✭ : ranging from couch seating to smaller tables.
F&B✭✭✭✭✭: the food came as requested, well flavoured and nice size portion. The food was well composed with the right amount of meat vs. green portion. The salmon was cooked perfectly, tender and juicy on a bed of the mint/peas/bulghur wheat that was very well prepared. Save some room for the sticky carrot cake which was fantastic. Not too sweet or tangy but the combination of poached pear and carrot, although unusual, conquered the table.
Free Wifi - Yes
Outlet - Few but available right next to the couch.
p.s. special thanks for keeping the things we left behind in our forgetfulness.
No doubt the best cafe in Dunedin. Their coffee is addictive. Food is scrumptious. Ambience is vibrant. Kudos to Steve and his team.
A good find away from the tourists. Busy place with award winning seafood chowder that was awesome.
