It’s always a good experience at the Good Oil Cafe. It was fully packed on a Sunday morning. But their service was vibrant and quick. We had ordered the bagels with tomato and hummus and also the eggs benedict. The hummus surely wasn’t the best and I wish they had added something to the tomatoes to make it flavourful. But the eggs Benedict was good and their coffee is always fresh.
Had a quickish stop here before a conference lecture for breakfast. They have quite a few items in the cabinet but the cinnamon roll wasn't there. Had to ask for it at the counter. Grabbed a cinnamon roll and hot chocolate. The cinnamon rolls were hot from the oven and served with butter. Easily inhaled it and had the hot chocolate on the go. Really delicious and a great start to the day. The hot chocolate was nice but the white hot chocolate was better.
Very good food forgot to take pics as we were Meeting someone But we had the Big breakfast and the Salmon bagels both incredible and Well worth the price huge serves. Coffee was rich and strong. Yum
The Good Oil Cafe (Dunedin)
Overall rating: 8/10 😍
we ordered: Tart from the cabinet $5 🍓& banana milkshake🍌 $6. Tart was yummy 😋, so was the milkshake but nothing outstanding. I wish there was another element to the milkshake because tasted like the ones I make at home just banana 🍌 + milk 🥛. Affordable cabinet options ✨.
Average price: $23 including drinks☕️
Vibes: brunch 🌞
Parking: Meter parking available along George St 🚙, maybe do a sneaky free park at Knox church💒.
Negative: outdoor seating is kind of small, and right on George St so not very private.🙅🏻but lots of indoor seating options.
Loved: the chirpy vibe 🐥
Staff: friendly 👯
Visiting from Auckland & decided to have brunch based on Zomato reviews. Have to say it is one of the best French toast that I've had! Light and fluffy & I liked how the syrup was served on the side so it didn't become a soggy mess while eating! The nectarine in the side gave it a nice sweet/tart balance.
I personally didn't like the coffee. Found it quite dark or possibly slightly burnt? I don't normally drink my coffee with sugar but had to add one to make it palatable.
Busy little place for good reason. Consistently good coffee and food. One of the best brunches I've had in town. Kid friendly is a bonus, if there's room for them .
Me and my best friend come here at least once a week for brunch and it has become a ritual!! We absolutely love it because the coffee is always spot on and the food is so delish. The rustic feel of the second room is super cosy and warm in the cold Dunedin winters. Located close to the uni, it’s just a quick walk away and located amongst some good fashion shops so can always wander around after a hearty meal. The service is quick and friendly as well. The most negative thing would be that it is ALWAYS busy so sometimes we can’t get a table which is very sad... Our personal favourites include the “French Toast” and the “Eggs Benedict" - @gastrogeeny
Trendy cafe on George St. Three sections to sit at depending on your mood - the outside on the street, the bright inside near the counter and deemer quieter room. Cozy seats, good coffee and friendly staff. Kumara mash witg poached egg and smoked salmon is a winner.
The bacon eggs benedict may have saved my life on Sunday morning after having such a killer hangover. Cannot thank you enough for pulling me through the day with that insane breakfast
In for coffee and food for 4. Place was busy and nearly always fill. Got a small table in the side room that hardly fitted all of us as a tight squeeze. Sound panels on the roof were gold. Easy to hear ever one. Food was ok, not the best and same with the coffee. We were a 50/50 spilt. Might go back....
This place is yum yum and more yum I went late afternoon to avoid the lunchtime rush. Found a small corner to relax in and enjoy my muffin which was light fluffy and tasty and a gorgeous baby lemon cake which was fresh. My hot chocolate not chocolately enough so might try another beverage when I return.
We tried the chicken and bacon burger and a citrus cake. The chicken was marinated well so it was really tasty, we loved it. The cake is quite sweet for me.
Scrambled Eggs - best I've ever had. Scrumptious muffins and best scrambled eggs I've ever had -- some secret ingredient?
On the rare occasion I manage to get up early, I treat myself to breakfast here once in a while. Along with Capers, the Good Oil is one of the better breakfast places in town in my opinion. Food is definitely on the pricey side, but the ambience and consistency of their food and service justifies it for the most part. I'm particularly fond of their rosti with crumbled cheese (feta if I'm not mistaken). Definitely worth visiting.
The Good Oil is the one cafe I religiously visit while in Dunedin. Every time I have been, it's always ridiculously busy, however staff remain unflustered.
I went on Saturday at lunch time, and we were lucky to score a table. I ordered the pumpkin and feta ravioli salad and a flat white.
The salad was massive, and very filling. For $12 it was excellent value & I was extremely satisfied. The coffee was just right and I had to order another.
The manager was very friendly, sharing jokes with both staff & customers. Definitely a warm environment and a great place to visit in Dunedin!
Great food, great coffee, very quick customer service, busy and lively would definitely return and recommend.
Have been here quite a few times - liked it so much i went there for birthday lunch etc. I like their coffee. My most recent visit they forgot my coffee so my friend was just sitting there with his hot chocolate like uuh? but once i reminded them they made it immediately and gave me a complimentary coffee voucher :)
I also really like their citrus fudge slice and the hot food is amazing - a chicken burger style sand which was the best one i have ever had it surprised me, no disappointments and nothing skimped on
Visited the good oil for lunch today..... SO SO impressed!! Had the best cafe experience of my life. coffee was to die for, cabinet food the best in dunedin and tasted delicious. the staff were fantastic, busy cafe but attentive and cheerful. what a pleasure, very reasonably priced food and coffee great value for money.... best cafe in dunedin by far :) :) will return for sure!!! well done the good oil :)
Great little cafe in Dunedin. I got a chicken salad which arrived at my table only 2 minutes after I ordered despite it being bust. It had quite a bit of chicken so well worth the $12. Very yummy! Will def return when I'm back down in Dunedin.
This is my favourite cafe with food in Dunedin.
It's always got a nice buzz and the staff are busy and attentive and friendly. Great coffee and my favourite club sandwiches are the perfect little morsel when you feel like eating but not too much. The food in the cabinet looks delicious and the style is contemporary without pretension. They also stay open later which is a bonus for anyone who feels like a decent coffee or bite after 3.
We have our weekly meeting at Good Oil. The service is good, coffee is above average and it is always quite busy. Their meals are what you'd expect in a cafe, nothing special.
Definitely consistently great, I have had both breakfasts and lunches at Good Oil, always go there when in Dunedin, great food, great service and most importantly fab coffee. Lots of staff on, great atmosphere, cater to dietry requirements. Always busy so that is always a good sign.
Some of the best cafe food in town - always consistent, reasonably priced and good selection. The cinnamon swirls are particularly delicious! Friendly and efficient staff who appear to enjoy their work and give the cafe a nice atmosphere. But be warned, this place is usually VERY busy - the only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that you can't always get a seat!!
One of the best cafes in all of Dunedin. Awesome food, really good coffee from La Marzocco machine, & they always have a great barista.. 2 thumbs up from me!
Great place to go for a coffee or a light meal.

Very lovely team on duty, friendly and helpful.
Very pleasant chicken, apple and almond salad.
Excellent coffee.
Really good all round. I definitely recommend this place.
Love this place! Eating an amazing cheese scone and having a vanilla latte!
Savory muffins and coffee was great. Big breakfast and cinnamon scroll was ok.
Highly recommended the bagel here!
It’s well-cooked, the bagel is very crispy and the strawberry jam and cream cheese perfectly fit together!
The iced chocolate is nice as well, we even got one to go in the end 😊
Really nice coffee! Oat milk mocha yum.
Berry Friand with vanilla yogurt was tasty as well. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff. I’d recommend this place to others definitively
Best coffee I've had in NZ. I always ask locals where to go and asked the road works guys wheres good and they all said this spot. Glad we got the Recommendation. Super friendly staff.
Yes, they serve delicious coffee; and the pastries are heavenly. (I kept staring at the strawberry and white chocolate muffin I was eating to make sure it was real.) But go for the breakfast! The inadequately named Roast (portobello) Mushrooms are a symphony that includes spinach and a perfectly poached egg on toasted ciabatta bread. (I also ordered the bacon but it was large and tasty enough on its own.) Add to all this friendly service and you have no excuse not to try this wonderful restaurant.
Nice brekki at the café really nice people there, good cappuccino :) really frothy and unsweetened soy milk which is rare! I didn't really like the yogurt, would be better to have a plain one. I have a paleo/keto friend that was a bit disappointed how everything including berries are always too sweet in Dunedin. Would be great to have to add sugar if we want to not by default :).
Excellent cup of coffee! Welcoming and friendly greeting.
Average price, not expensive but the foods quality is great. I ordered Salmon Eggs Benedict, Cheese Roll and lemon cake. Will try the coffee and other foods.
A cafe that I love to visit. Friendly staffs, good price and great taste. Will back next time to try other food.
Staff were so lovely & the food and coffee was absolutely delicious will definitely be coming back next time me and my partner are in Dunedin ❤️ 10/10
Had the absolute best ever Pork sausage roll in my life from the Good Oil. There coffee and friendly staff is amazing 😎👌🏻
Best coffee and fresh baking in town. ❤️
To name a few: Carrot cake, cinnamon scrolls, even mushroom soup to die for! 🏅
Had a delicious panini with a side salad here and it was really good value for money. Staff were friendly and upbeat which was lovely.
The kai here is finger licking delish. Portion sizes are on point, there is plenty of flavour and menu options. The staff are friendly and will definitely be back.
Don’t let the latte art fool you… the flat white with soy was perfect and a good price. Loved it!
