I have been dying to try their ribs for the longest time, and finally, 24/4 a friend and I went for dinner and got their ribs with the 2 for 1 deal-an absolute steal and so worth for the price!
The ribs were a very decent portion (but variable as my friend got kind of a smaller piece, but then mine was mostly cartilage), the meat fall of the bone and soft, some slightly dry but majority soft!! It was really tender but the least sauciest ribs I’ve come across-which personally I don’t have a major issue with, but it would’ve been nice to have more sauce. The potato wedges were possibly the crispiest side wedges I’ve ever tasted and definitely rate them. The salad was a bit of a miss-I liked the onion, carrot and capsicum but the mesclun leaves I could’ve done without. I think the typical coleslaw wins on this one. But other than that, the meal was a huge hit, definitely keen to go back and experience the goodness again, and surely one day I’ll be brave enough to order the full rack? 😜 4/5
Food here was great. I enjoyed the pizza I ordered and found the staff to be easy to talk to. The outdoor spaces are great, with one being on the ground floor outside and the other on the first floor on the balcony. I've been here multiple times and can't really fault anything except maybe the aesthetic as it feels old.
Left Kaka Point to begin our journey to Dunedin. On t he drive there we came round a bend in the road to find it full of sheep, a lady came over to us and asked if we would not mind waiting for a couple of minutes (turned out to be more like 20 minutes). She was the farmers wife and the sheep were theirs which they were moving from one field to another and using the road was the easiest way of doing it. She spent the time telling us about the farm and the surrounding countryside. They were moving 2000 ewes to be sheared . They could only use about half of the land they owned for grazing as the rest was covered by coastal rain forest. When we arrived in Dunedin we decided that we would have a treat and stay in a motel for the night and sleep in a proper bed. We picked Manor Motel from its description in our lonely planet guide and they only had a 2 bedroom unit so we had that at a cost of $130 which was a good price. The room was not ready until 2pm so we left Tiny in their car park and gave the owner some washing to do for us and went for a walk round the town. It was quite busy but it is the second biggest city in New Zealand's south island with around 120000 people. We walked into the center of the city and the area was called the Octagan. We walked round the museum and art gallery and the cathedral before calling in a bar called Ratbags & Innocent Bystanders that played 60's rock music which we enjoyed whilst drinking a glass of draft Speight's which was the local beer as it was brewed in the city. We also had a snack with our beer which was great. We would definitely recommend a visit on your next trip to Dunedin. There was also a Cadbury World just round the corner. We walked back to the motel passing the railway station which was a fantastic old building. We got back to the motel about 3:30 and had lunch and the owner brought our washing back. We could not get internet working (whats new) as the router was not strong enough. We drove to a beach where people were surfing (in wet suits) and walked along a track and spotted another lone penguin and had a look at the towns outdoor heated swimming pool which we decided to visit the next day. We went back to the room where we found 2 pieces of chocolate cake that the owner had left for us. We had dinner watched a film then retired to a big luxurious bed for the night.
Seriously good pizza and vibes. Nice for a drink after work or a catch up with some friends on Mondays or tuesdays especially when they do half price metre pizza. Thursdays they have 50c wings which are yummm, im full after 4. One of my favorite places in Dunedin to relax.
Great half meter pizza deals on Mondays and Tuesdays. Perfect for any student. Pizzas are delicious, staff are friendly and a very cosy atmosphere.
Upstairs at IB. Had pork belly pizza.(good) and ribs(best I've had). Staff were excellent .Despite this being a 'tradies' night and very busy, nothing phased the attentive staff.
Innocent Bystanders Upstairs
Best Smoking Venue in Dunedin, Best Music in a bar, Best Pizza, Best bar staff.
You win all those. If you're a smoker like me and don't want to sit out in the cold, pop up to Innocent Bystanders and you will be pleasantly surprised. A sort of secret garden with a half open roof will cater for your needs, fairy lights and all. Great great music choice.
The foot long pizzas are a delight to behold - have the vegetarian with heaps of Tabasco sauce. Great to start out the night here and a bit more. Cool decor inside. The graffiti sign on the stairs needs to change though - kind of clashes with the rest of it.
Nice to have somewhere to go where in the Octagon that isn't tacky. It has personality and style and the staff are extremely fun.
It's not a place you'd go with your partner for a romantic evening of fine dining, but for a place for a group to hang out and eat it's not bad at all.
The meter long pizzas are great to share between 4 and works out as a pretty cheap lunch.
The staff were very nice, food was served promptly, and they gave us a jug of sangria in the house.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our experience at Ratbags last night; it was made even better to find out that they had half price pizza, which meant we practically got one pizza free. My husband had a vegetarian one which was very nice, but not as good as the Lamb one I had. The pizza was half a metre long! Which was nice as what I didn't finish I'm now enjoying for lunch. The service was also great, the guy convinced us to get the cheesecake, which was to die for. We were greeted by a smile and left with a smile. Will definitely visit again next time we are in town.
I enjoyed this place so much that we ate there weekly for months, the food was great and good value. Because we went there so often the menu got a bit tired but the staff were fantastic and most know exactly what we want and get our drinks ready before we even have a chance to order :) I would recommend this to anyone wanting a relaxing time especially upstairs on a sunny day!
Innocent Bystander - This is a great place in the centre of town to meet friends for an after work drink and their half meter pizzas and wedges are to die for really good quality, good quantity and good value food. Their $5 after 5 on a Thursday is a must for a wine, beer etc. Their lunchtime pizza offers are really good value for money.
Loved this place! We came in for lunch on Tuesday. We enjoyed a half metre pizza, which had 3 different flavors, simply loved it. Would return all the time if we lived in Dunedin. Service was perfect, a lovely woman served us, very pleasant indeed. Great setting in the Octagon, could simply sit back, relax, listen to the music and watch the goings on of the city life around us.
Ratbags has amazing pizzas. A fantastic selection of toppings and good thin bases. Delicious! My only gripe would be that the best place to sit is "outside" on the deck, but of course smoking is allowed out there, even though, when the verandas are pulled out, the area is almost totally enclosed. This led to us having to eat our yummy pizzas in fumes of smoke from the nearby table. Not cool and probably not legal either!?
This place is great - Amazing Pizzas. Would have to be the best Pizza I've had in Dunedin - Great service
