We came by to try their cheese rolls since they were supposed to be the worlds best. They were out.
That didn't bode well so we just ordered and waited. The main dining area is underground, just go down the stairs from the street. There were quite a few tables available.
I wasn't expecting much but when I had the laksa the flavours were perfect. The char kwei tiew also tasted just right. Not many places do this well but KL Aroma does. Although they didn't have the cheese rolls they do have really tasty Malaysian food.
Love the food here, it's tasty, authentic and reasonable value. Looking forward to the surprise of finding new dishes as I keep coming back for nasi lemak, char keow teow, roti cannai and others because they are that good!
The food is quite authentic, with good portion sizes too. I asked for medium hot for my dishes but I find them too spicy for me, even though I usually handle hot food pretty well. Their mee goreng is really good, highly recommended.
Great food! The staff is friendly and quick. The Dosa's and sambal dishes are really good. The Masala tea is also great! It's a nice cafe in the basement of George street
Very good traditional food with great pricing. Been twice with malay friends and was lucky enough to try a good variety of the dishes on the menu. Not one disapointed, all very nicely presented and awesome flavour. Decor could do with a little upgrade. Great service, very friendly.
Love that there's a place that serves authentic Malaysian and Indonesian food in Dunedin. I ordered the char kway teow which was decently tasty and had a great balance of flavours. My only wish is that the proportion was bigger and I would give a better rating however I left a bit hungry for more and even had a cheese roll for entree.
Came here on a Friday evening at 630. 3 other tables so not super jumping. I ordered the beef rendang and man was it tasty!! Service was great, I was shown to a table, provided with a menu and water. Food came out very fast (could be because rendang is stewed). The other tables had kids and the staff put Monsters Inc. on the tv for them. Really thoughtful. Only gripe is that prices are a touch high at 14.90 for my rendang. Is well worth the price but kinda out of range for a lot of students.
Just discovered this cafe today and I am so excited that Dunedin finally has authentic Malaysian food. I has the nasi lemak with chicken rendang and can honestly say it was the best meal I've had in quite a while. Lovely friendly staff. Will be going back tomorrow for lunch!!
The food is authentic and absolutely Malaysian! The beef rendang was succulent and flavourful while the rest of the menu also had a kick to it. The char kuey teow was amazing and definitely my favourite noodle menu in Dunedin.
As a person who enjoys South-east Asian cuisine, KL Aroma is a refreshment in Dunedin. Wonderful Malaysian dishes, masterfully blended, long menu, perfect flavours, cold teas...KL Aroma is a place to visit.
I would be doing injustice to it, singling out only one dish. Mee goreng was my favourite for some months, but murtabak, potato masala dosai or pendang fish curry are great choice for everybody.
The management is kind beyond description and, without reservation, I claim KL Aroma as my favourite place where I spend in average 2-3 evenings per week.
Great option for who loves authentic Malaysian flavour.Dosai,Mee goreng, Nasilemak,Curry laksa,Gula malaca,etc...... Amazing! Must wanted to go often

Place is clean and welcoming, server was equally sincere and hospitable. Food selection was more than decent, and you get your money's worth both for flavour and serving portions. You can also ask for varying spiciness levels and have the oil used reduced to your liking. Same can be done with sugar levels in drinks.
I ordered Chinese Black Pepper Beef with rice and asked for really spicy. Not as spicy as I hoped it would be but nevertheless it still taste as good as home.
I've now been to KL Aroma twice and I can honestly say it's been fantastic each time. I've ordered a lamb curry and the vegetable tofu curry, which were both spicy and delicious. Great authentic Malaysian cousine. Staff is extremely warm and friendly, and make you feel welcome in their restaurant. Highly recommend.
Value for money - I couldn't finish my plate! I could taste the authentic flavours of Malaysia and it tasted beautiful! Friendly staff greeted me and treated me like a valuable customer. Warm atmosphere lovely large area that feels intimate and tasteful. Breastfeed & child friendly there were high chairs available. FOOD IS DELICIOUS. I ordered a 'medium' heat and it was perfect. Other restaurants get this wrong - K L Aroma has it spot on. This restaurant is a gem. Available for large groups or solo.
The last visit here was lovely. The beef rendang portion was really huge and i even needed to take home a great amount of leftovers. The staff was exceptionally friendly, ensuring that we are enjoying our meals and also helpful in helping me to takeaway my leftovers. Would love to come again.
Again, another exceptional meal we had at this place. Flavours are always on point and hard to fault. This has been my family's favourite takeaway and dine in restaurant. My kids love their noodle dishes and hubby's favourite is nasi lemak. The serving sizes are large. Definitely recommend to those wanting authentic Malaysian food.
Really delicious authentic Malaysian/Indian cuisine!!! First we were a little bit suspicious. The restaurant is down in a cellar and it has plain furniture. But the food was so tasty and the staff so friendly. Even the cook asked if we were pleased. And we definitely were! We ordered vegetarian spinach curry and tofu curry with medium spicyness. But watch out its really spicy ;). Maybe the light version is better if your not used to Asian spicyness.
Wonderful awesome Asian food! Teally worth for the money charged. Marvellous place and cozy ambiance. Even staffs were friendly and ensure food were served well and tasty. Thumbs up! Feast like no other!
Absolutely amazing nasi lemak, roti canai and char kuey teow. This place is a little dark and quirky decor, but who cares, it's authentic food, very good value and my favourite food joint. Better than a lot of bigger named Malaysian joints up in Auckland. Keep it up!
Food was amazing but the length it took to get the food was long. Music playlist semi authentic and it gives a Malaysian feel to the place. Layout needs a bit more creativity.
Absolutely recommend this to everyone. Went there with my partner last night. Friendly helpful staff and warm inviting environment. Even warned me my dish was spicy and boy was it haha amazing food for absolute crazy prices. Thank you so much for awesome service and alround outing experience.
One of the best Malaysian curries and Kuey Teow dishes I've had in a while. The mango lassy is a great drink to compliment the meal too!
Delicious food. As authentic Malaysian food as I've had in 5 years in New Zealand. Well worth the money and very tasty.
Great food. Nice staff. A bit pricey though BUT they are delicious. The laksa taste great...could do bigger cup for their teh tarik though.
Halal nice food and kinda cheap. Suitable for students or casual meal. Their tea is good. Don't bring your first date here.
