The stroopwafels were some of the best I've ever had in my life! The coffee was perfect with the sweet treat. But what really makes this place a total gem is Richard's hospitality. Four friends and I wandered by on a cloudy day and he stroke up conversation and invited us all into his little boat. We were planning on just looking over the viewing point but ended up spending almost an hour just hanging out.
Really loved the waffles and coffee! The waffles is crunchy, lightly sweetened with a hint of cinnamon. Coffee is fresh and aromatic! Lifeboat is a great place to hangout and take a break! We even had a special honeymoon waffle! Thank you so much!
After searching around for breakfast at Greymouth through Trip advisor, we decided to come over and have a try.
End up, we have a combo as our breakfast and taking away for 10 small and 10 big pieces of wafels to enjoy it in our journey and bring back home for our lovely family.
They are very friendly and warm, nothing got better than these in the winter. Having a nice talk with them is out of my expectation, I think we gonna have great and continuous chat if we are not rushing to our next destination.
Super recommend to everyone who travel to Greymouth, we hope to visit them again in near future to enjoy this wonderful wafels and continue our chat.
Wonderful way to kick start our chilly morning great coffee great stroppwafle and even better conversation. Anyone in Greymouth MUST stop in.
We've been in New Zealand for 10 days so far and this is the best cup of coffee we've had! United Airlines ain't got nothing on Richard's waffles!
Best stroopwafels I've had in many years! Visiting Richard and Monique was also the best thing we did while we were in Greymouth.
Probably the highlight of my trip to Greymouth, delicious waffle, wonderful coffee and great banter! Lovely people, lovely location! Magical!
Yummy stroopwaffles & hot coffees from The Lifeboat. We were even given a heart shaped waffle freebie by the romantic & friendly owner!
Such a lovely couple. The stroopwaffle's were really great. It's like coming to holland and enjoy the originals. Thank you so much!
Fantastic! Pay Richard and Monique a visit when you're in Greymouth! They make better stroopwaffles than the Dutch and they're absolutely beautiful people.
Awesome to have a little bit of home all the way in NZ! Great stroopwafels, delicious coffee and friendly owner! Come to Wellington!
Delicious stroopwaffles and coffee. The host, Richard, made our day. He is really welcoming and he made the place special. Hope we can visit the lifeboat again in a few years!
I had my first wafle today and it was so good we went back for more. Dragonfly catering will be using this unique and incrediably yummy treat in our catering events.
I loved the Stroopwafels and coffee, but what I loved the most was the hospitality of Richard the owner of this amazing stand. Thank you so much, you made our day! It was so nice to meet you! Bedankt voor alles Richards! Groetjes, Sanne & Glenn
Great stroopwaffles, great guy! Fantastic spot too! Worth paying him a visit. Get them going Richard!!
Fantastic stroopwafels and coffee served by the most fanstcally unique and hospitable man. Thanks Richard you made the start of our trip unforgettable xxx
Actually my husband and I went there 2 years ago, back in March 2017 when The Lifeboat was only a few months open. We spent some time here since Richard was soooo nice, talkative, and kind to us. He told us a little bit about his life, and we told him about our lives and dreams. It was really a nice talk with this super friendly guy. I always remember him, his great coffee (one of the best we tasted in NZ), and his Dutch stroopwafel (as sweet as the owner). In the end when we had to leave his small lovely shop, he gave us another stroopwafel for free with the shape of heart, and a message: "Just follow your heart. You have the energy, you have each other." I would never forget that kindness and sincereness from Richard.
I would highly recommend this place for a visit to taste his coffee and stroopwafel, and definitely a chat with Richard.
I hope we can visit this place again in the future ^_^
The water is by your side and the wind is coming in. On your left the ocean is raging the channel flowing on the right.
You reach the end. The end of the Earth. A mirage appears. A little blue boat sitting on the edge of the rocks with two smiling people aboard.
As you move closer the smiles get bigger. The man with the grey cap starts to wave. You've been travelling for days. You start to think.
What am I seeing?
You keep walking. The mirage isn't fading. You get closer to the boat.
The man with the grey cap calls out.
Hello! Would you like some coffee.
You realise it's not a mirage. It's the Lifeboat. The Lifeboat NZ. The little blue boat at the edge of the world.
A smell hits your nose. It's familiar. Sweet. Reminds you of when you were young. What is it? Then you see the man with the grey cap open the oven to the left. He pulls out a steaming circle of gold.
You ask a question.
What's that?
It's a Stroopwafel.
A what?
A Stroopwafel. A Dutch cookie. With butter and honey and cinnamon.
Cinnamon. That's it.
Driving through the rain. Across Arthur's Pass. Right to the edge of Greymouth and now you've found fresh Stroopwafels and coffee. Filter coffee. Coffee which has the smoothness of tea but the flavour of coffee.
I'll take a coffee and a large Stroopwafel please.
You learn the mans name. It's Richard. His partner Monique pours water into the kettle sitting over the fire. The steam starts to come out.
Richard tips the kettle over the cup. The water seeps through the beans through the paper into the cup. You can smell it. Fresh coffee fresh Stroopwafels cinnamon butter honey. All of it. The Lifeboat blocks the wind coming off the ocean. Blocks the wind so you can get the best coffee on the West Coast.
Coming out here you didn't think there would be much. Then The Lifeboat NZ appeared. Two smiling faces. Two delicious offerings.
You blow the steam off the coffee. Take a sip and then bite the Stroopwafel. Sip bite sip bite. Richard tells you about his time in Greymouth. How he and Monique met in primary school. Sip bite sip bite.
It's done. You're at the bottom of the coffee but the stories are still going. It's time for seconds. Sip bite sip bite.
All the way from the other side of the world and you found The Lifeboat NZ. Two coffees two waffles two amazing people. You found it.
Awesome little spot right at the ocean. Delicious coffee and amazing Dutch Stroopwaffels. We tasted them in Amsterdam before and they taste exactly the same, if not better. :-) went back to bring some home too! Very affordable as well. On a nice day it is beautiful to watch the surfers and Mt Cook. The owners are lovely too. Come here, it‘s a gem!
Oh my word! Stoopwaffels en real hot chocolate! Delicious is an understatement! The owners are such lovely people! Was great to chat a bit of Dutch/Afrikaans
We are in Greymouth just for the day and we messaged The Lifeboat on FB to see if they were open cos we were dreaming of Stroopwafel! They were not open cos it is such a rainy day, but Monique said she was coming to town and she would drop some to us! She did and they were amazing! Such wonderful service, thank you Monique!!
Found that place described in the AA brochure "Marlborough, Nelson, Tasman & West Coast' and thought we should definitely try it out. It was amazing. Great coffee (and hot chocolate with real chocolate!), really friendly Dutch lady and the best dutch waffles ever. Give them a visit, have a chat and enjoy the view with a coffee in your hand!
Best coffee I’ve had on the South Island so far! Stopping to sip and search for dolphins is also superb. 💜🌊☕️🐬Richard & Monique are part of a unique, sweet experience!
Richard is an absolute legend! The filter coffee is great & the waffles are the best in NZ! Epic spot with the most positive vibes. Cheers man
It is a very cute cafe with the sweet and very welcoming owners! I would highly recommend to check it out and to get a cap of a perfect hot chocolate with a waffle and a good chat with the owners. Like a bonus there is an amazing view to the beach, the snow capped mountains in the background and the birds.
Hot chocolate, by the way, is the best I’ve ever tried in NZ. It’s from real chocolate! And the best freshly made waffles! Yummy!!!
Take several waffles with you because you will remember it delicious taste forever and regret that you had just one of it haha
Probably the best stroopwafels in the southern hemisphere. Freshly made to order by the wonderful Richard. Combine that with a good coffee and a great chat, well worth a little detour if you're passing through Greymouth!
