The best thai beef salad I've had. Full of flavour, fresh and the beef was lean. Delicious
Have only lived in the area for 3 months but had always wanted to have a meal at carriages cafe. Many locals had suggested it was just average but I’m here to say whatever has happened this place is delicious.
Service was fast and attentive. Food was spot on and in actual fact heaps more than expected and so yummy. And delivered so quick.
Would highly recommend. Actually heading back tomorrow.
I know this place has had a rough time recently but the new management has really turned this place around! Friendly faces, quick service, and yum food! My mum and I got the eggs Benedict which was amazing! I would say it was at our table less than 10 mins after ordering, superduper quick :)
Went there today for breakfast and found service was exceptional, food was plentiful and very good quality and general surroundings were most enjoyable. Cabinet food looked really good also. As far as we are concerned the place is to be highly recommended.
First time here for a birthday brunch. Such a homely feel and the hosts were so inviting and helpful to our needs. The food is all natural, baked and produced on site and with generous portions. We were recommended to next time try the famous mango chicken curry which we will on our next visit. Thanks to owners Paul and his lovely wife for an enjoyable day out and top quality food.
I come here couple times a year. Great for groups and great stop by point on the way through. Love the train carriage dining experience.

Beautiful cafe and wine bar. Awesome service, love the outdoorsy vibe. Cajun chicken salad was amazing and calamari was to die for. Can't wait to go back!!!!!
It was a good day to eat outside... food was really good but the eggs in the eggs Benedict weren’t runny as we wanted it was like a semi boiled egg but I would give them another chance ☺️ I ordered and ate the French toast and now that was pretty amazing would definitely order that again! Also the hot cakes were fluffy and had the same toppings as the French toast!
Went here on a rainy Wednesday with my sister for a coffee. This place is hella cute and their coffee and tea were perfect! Its worth traveling 35 minutes for hehe. I am coming back this weekend to bring my family! Ambiance is fantastic!
Great atmosphere, great food and generous helpings. Been back many times.
Pork ribs are huge in fact all servings are large. Recommended for all
Called into this unusual cafe where there are two old carridges with the old flip seats (remember going to school on these) ordered a Chai latte $4.50 & was served fast and was very nice.
Great location to open up a cafe. Staff were friendly but moved slowly. This was also the case with the food. My partner and I ordered nachos and although they tasted great and were of a decent price, it took much longer than needed despite the few people that were there at the time. The place isn't too clean as well. We ordered ice chocolates too that tasted good but were quite overpriced ($8).
Would definitely recommend this cafe as a nice spot to really feel like your out of Auckland. It's super cute and a lovely outlook with the pond outside. Staff were nice and efficient. I ordered the open omelette which was tasty and I loved that they use big chunks of ham steak (instead of just shaved ham). It would of been nice if the omelette was served with a salad on the side and chutney.
My partner ordered the NZ rail breakfast which he enjoyed. The mushrooms were massive and it came with so much bacon! The hash browns didn't seem to have much potato and was mainly deep fried crunchy bits. Overall although not perfect we both really enjoyed our lunches.
I would definitely recommend this place, fantastic food (I had nachos and it was spot on and a bit of the pancakes which were really tasty!) also really good coffee, and I love that you can sit in the carriages, and look out at the ducks and the pond, staff were friendly, 10/10.
My son was sick so I took a half day off work. Really really friendly staff. Food was super yum. Extremely reasonable prices (couldn't believe it actually being in kumeu). I wish I took a picture of my food it looked so good but I gobbled it up too quickly. Don't know what these other people are on about. This place is a 10 out of 10. Would definitely recommend to others.
Service could be a tad friendlier. Always impressed with the food and coffee. Priced fairly. Pretty setting. Train a bit claustrophobic to eat in if the tables are all taken. Will be visiting again. Kid friendly.
Fantastic little busy cafe in kumeu ordered pasta eggs benny blast and banana milkshake all of it was delicious 😋 nice little pond view and seating in carriages indoor and outdoor dining would definitely come here again
Been here before and have been waiting for the opportunity to come again. Great day for it, interesting setting with the train carriages etc. The food was sooo good my sis n law bought some to take home for dinner. Will definitely go again 😊

Oldie but goodie! Came here on busy hour on a Saturday. Quickly got a seat even though many tables were uncleared and we had to clear one ourselves. They pretty short-staffed, everything pretty much self-service and you have to order at the counter. We prefer to sit on the open area than in the carriages. Aside from that, the food is lovely with big serving size. Price is the usual cafe price, not too cheap and not to dear either. We ordered big brekkie, cabinet sandwich and eggs salmon benedict. Food came out quickly too. Will be back again when we are in the hood!

I would say this place does the BEST Thai beef salad in Auckland! If you don't mind a little spicy kick I'd highly recommend you try this delicious dish! The eggs bene and the pancakes are also a delicious treat. You can choose to dine in carriages (go figure) which gives this place an awesome feel to it!
Please note this review is a few months old.
Me and my partner had recently moved here after buying a business down in kumeu and decided we ought to check out some of the local eateries around!
The cafe was surprisingly busy considering it was hidden away behind a plant store. Ordering at the front was quite time consuming as a line was starting to form but hey, maybe it's more efficient for them this way.
The food came our fresh and flavour packed in generous portions and their smoothies you can tell were made from real fruit!
I haven't tried their lunch menu yet but I can tell you that their breakfast menu really is delicious!
Popped in for a quick bite on the way home from the beach and was really impressed by their portion size and value for money. Fries were delish and a good coffee to warm the toes.
great service awesome coffee hash brown stack was so massive but really good!! Really friendly staff have been a number of times and service is always fantastic!! Cool experience if you have kids too getting to sit in the train carriages
Affordable and very tasty food. A reasonable effort has been made to provide for vegetarians. Substitutions were made painlessly and without additional cost.
My partner and I went here for brunch and were so pleased. The food was amazing and the meals were really big. The service was friendly, and the staff and kitchen were very accommodating. We are both vegetarians and I can't eat dairy so they let me make a couple of substitutions in my meal without any charge, which was great considering some other places charge a ridiculous amount just to swap meat for veges. We will definitely be revisiting Carriages.
Went here today for lunch was pretty impressed.. The atmosphere is very relaxed and it looks really cool with the old trains. the food was pretty good , although the service was quite slow it took a while to receive our meals we had long finished our drinks before our lunch arrived so that was the downfall
A friend and I just had lunch here. The service was great although I could see the attendant at the counter getting a little vexed waiting as I casually mulled over the menu options hehehe. We ordered the seafood chowder, bacon and scrambled eggs on gluten free toast and a date scone with english breakfast tea. Our meal was served quickly and it was so delicious on a cold windy afternoon. This has been my third visit to Carriages and each time, the standard has been awesome.
Good food and good location
Good Value Coffee! Friendly Staff.
A group of ten of us enjoyed a wonderful brunch today for Mothers Day. This is the first time any of us had dined at this establishment. We were expecting a long wait for our food as the flow of people coming through the doors was continuous. To our surprise we were served extremely quickly and the food was absolutely amazing! My Carriages Benny was scrumptious and the NZ Rail breakfast is exceptional. We would have appreciated some water and glasses at our table when we arrived. However these were available for us to help ourselves and as the place was packed it was understandable that all hands were very busy. I commend management for having enough staff on for this busy day. We were really impressed and will definitely be back again soon. The best brunch out West we have had in a very long time. Thank you to the team today. Fabulous job.
Been here several times and I love it. The food is amazing. The service is really efficient and staff are friendly. I love the train carriage how you can also sit in there and enjoy your meal too.
Food here is excellent and of a high standard. I ordered the hashbrown tower and it exceeded my expectations. Crispy golden hasbrowns with cripy bacon with a wonderful runny egg yolk is a combination that can't be beat. Dad had a seafood chowder and said it was the best chowder, even beating the famous chowder in fremantle, perth. Mum had the chicken and cranberry on turkish bread which had lots of fillings and lots of flavour. The food came fast and piping hot which was the same as the coffes. We came a few days early on a rainy sunday and it was soo packed with people that we had to go somewhere else. Even today on a thursday weekday there was lots of people coming in. Shows how good this place is.
Was in Auckland for Father's Day weekend at my parents house in Huapai. We had a table booked at Carriages Cafe & Wine Bar which is my parents' local favorite restaurant. The whole family loved it there really is something for everyone. Good flavours in the food fast and efficient service. We had ordered the fish and chips, hash brown tower, fettachini kids train burger and nuggets and chips followed by a to die for mango cheesecake. Looks like every time I'm in Auckland I will be making a special visit to Carriages.
Great service, very friendly and really good food. Love the area for children really good when you want some where to go that caters for kids and you can enjoy a great coffee, and good food. Definitely coming back with our friends, well worth the drive. The new owners gave done great things with it. :)
Went in there after a few years and wow what a change. New owners have improved this business a lot. The meals were very filling, service was great and coffee was amazing. Big ups to the new owners for a providing us with a great lunch. Would certainly be back.
Food/service is amazing. You don't come across many places with value for your buck! New owners super friendly and bubbly. If you love soup i would totally recommend, you do not want the bowl to end. Generous servings on the food, hash brown stack one of the best breakfast I have ever had and I drive a fare way just to come to this place! =)
I hadn't been to the Carriages Cafe since it had changed ownership about a month and a half ago. However, quite a few of my friends had started commenting to me that they had been frequenting the place and it was wonderful, so I couldnt resist any longer. I must admit that I was pleasantly surprised as the quality of the food was great, the prices very reasonable, the service brilliant and the location of the cafe is nice and relaxing. Overall I must say that I'm very pleased Carriages Cafe. I'll definitely be going back regularly with my friends and family.
Come here with my family quite a bit, enjoy the surroundings and the food
