The best experience - can't come to Kaikoura within trying out this awesome place kiwi style- BBQ seafood on the side of the road! Crayfish was simply amazing. We had a stunning day and sat at the table and had a yummy seafood meal.
Tasty, fresh seafood with friendly, quick service and a great view. Highly recommended.
Their crayfish is awesome, fresh and taste really good! Just a simple crayfish and prawn will be enough for us to enjoy our day in Kaikoura. Unfortunately they're service is not as good as their seafood. Taken 30 minutes or so to wait, and it's pretty common that they forget our orders, so let's add another 10 to 15 minutes.
This place has really tasty grilled seafood. You can select the crayfish you want from the tub and they grill it in garlic butter. Very fast service and super delicious.
Very tasty Crayfish for reasonable price. Comes with a garlic bread, rice and some salad. Waiting is about 20-30 min depends how busy they are. To clean your hand after use the bathroom 150 m on the left of Kiosk.
Excellent food!!!! Everything was fresh and the butter sauce was D E L I C I O U S!!!
Seafood platter is a must try - value for money! $58 for huge plate. Seafood chowder was cheap and good. Crayfish was delicious, bought the $154 NZD one which was huge!!! Tip: there is meat in the legs of the crayfish too so don’t just eat the body! Really dig in!!!
The place closes before 5pm though so do come early!
The food is simple, the decor is casual, the setting is literally on the side of the road. Sound like I’m downplaying it? I’m not. This is exactly what it is. And if you’re wanting anything more, you probably shouldn’t come here.
Yet if you’re an aficionado of the simple things in life, do not give this roadside shack a miss. The seafood is fresh and grilled to perfection, with just as much seasoning as it needs. The rice is plain and so is the salad. We’re here for the seafood after all! There’s even a booze van to have a beer in the sun, if you’re so inclined. Since it’s right next to the beach, it’d be the perfect lunch spot to take a break from the waves.
It may sound like I am downplaying it, yet this spot was my absolute favourite restaurant in all of Aotearoa. If I ever make it back down here, I will spend a few days in the area just so I can eat here every day. What an absolute delight. Props to the girlies manning the grill, you’re doing god’s work.
First time trying as I saw the reviews is good. Its a takeaway option on a rainy day. We went there on a rainy day so atmosphere is Neutral. We ordered takeout and eat in car. No half crayfish i s available so I ordered BBQ crayfish tail and it comes with rice and salad. Crayfish is so fresh and juicy. Nice amount of saltiness and its not dry as their cooking method is accurate to keep the moisture in before BBQ it. BBQ Crayfish tail cost 59 NZD (imo the portion is worth it and its good) and i ordered a seafood chowder for 8 NZD. For budget wise at least try their seafood chowder its really good. Full of fresh stuffs in there unlike any other chowder.
$50 for one cray fish with some salad and rice. The crayfish taste fresh. The hygiene of the cooking could be improved by using disposable gloves or cooking utensils.
What's not to love?!? Beautiful spot, friendly folk, and crayfish! The bouillabaisse was delicious.
The crayfish (lobster) was really good! I had the 1/2 crayfish meal (rice, garlic bread, salad). Just a very unique setting along the road and steps from the ocean! Only reason for 4 stars on atmosphere was someone was feeding the seagulls, feeding frenzy with so my flying pests overhead. This is in no way the owners fault because they have signs that tell you not to feed the birds! Loved this place!
We came across this place whilst walking back from the panoramic walk (highly recommended).
Thirsty, we were delighted to find the drinks wagon sells non-alcoholic beer as well as all the usuals.
We had booked lunch in town otherwise we’d have tried the BBQ crayfish. Lots of customers there, so that’s a recommendation.
Though sited on the roadside the shoulder is broad and the traffic not too frequent to be irritating.
If I were doing the walk again I’d schedule in a stop here for lunch in good weather.
My partner and I were excited to try the seafood at Kaikoura Seafood BBQ Kiosk we heard all about it all the way from Melbourne, Victoria and we weren’t disappointed. We got the Seafood platter for $58 and it was well worth the money and plenty for the both of us to share. The crayfish fritter was our favourite.
The workers were really friendly and accommodating.
Good quality seafood to eat in your car or on the beach while you watch the sealife & ocean. Nice people to deal with when ordering too!
Yes it’s expensive but it’s sea food so quite normal. We paid like 80$ for 2 person. We had way enough, it was delicious. Not a big fan of the fritters but loved the mussels. Just one thing missing, it would be great to get a lemon wipe to clean our hands at the end.
Crayfish. YES!!
Whitebait Fitter. YES!
Seafood Platter YES!.
Quick . Fresh and tasty.
For all seafood lovers this is a must do in Kaikoura. We had the seafood platter and half a crayfish. Everything was so fresh and cooked to perfection, the scallops were enormous. Very well priced for the single meals, all around $11-13. Highly recommend.
