Had a very nice Sunday brunch for three adults. Great coffee, food and welcoming staff. Ciabatta toast and spreads were beautiful and the eggs were cooked perfectly. The place was warm and homely and the price was right - couldn't ask for more.
We visit Backstone at least once a fortnight, for breakfast and we really enjoy it. It is our go to place for breakfast dates. The wait staff are very professional and friendly. Would recomend to all AAAA+++++
The food here is above average for a cafe-style meal, but unfortunately they are let down by their less than attentive service. We ordered the salt and pepper squid salad and the chicken sandwich. The quality of ingredients and mix of flavours was excellent. The squid came with a mojito mayo which was outstanding. The chips with the chicken sandwich would have to be fairly up there in terms of "best chips in Dunedin". We were wanting a coffee after our lunch and although we waited for at least 15 minutes, no one came near our table - well they did of course, to take orders from other people, but did not clear our plates or ask if we needed anything else. I find this frustrating and common to so many restaurants in Dunedin. On the whole though, the food is worth it, so will make this a regular spot when in the area.
We visited Blackstone on a Thursday evening, for dinner.
I tend to judge a restaurant by its antipasto platter, and Blackstone's Mezze platter did not disappoint - delicious. Given that it is billed as a 'cafe and bar', the food is far better than I expected.
Delicious, quality food, well presented. The Cardrona Lamb Rump was melt-in-the mouth, and the Rib-eye steak was cooked well. Both my companion and I are gluten-free and this was easily accommodated both for the Mezze platter and our mains.
Highly recommended for a good meal out.
These guys know how to do things well, friendly quick service, warm inviting environment and great food. Plus they can cook and present crisp tasty chips! Many other places find this extremely hard.
I could not fault my cold beer and chicken sandwich at the leaner by the fire.
If in Mosgiel head here, it's not hard to find.
Amazing place for food and coffee, been a wee while since have been here but I am never disappointed. The staff are pleasant and welcoming, the coffees I have had have never tasted bitter always a smooth brew. I have has lunch and breakfast with these guys and WOW the only words I have are nom nom nom.. long may it continue. Well done Blackstone.
The latest incarnation of Blackstone is by far the best yet, and the quality of the food under their current chef is fantastic, and pretty much faultless.
In fact, the food is so good, it highlights some other aspects of the dining experience which need improvement: the service could be a little more attentive (water should be brought to the table as a matter of course), and they should really have a few (local) beers on tap. The wine menu could also stand to be a bit more adventurous too.
As it stands though, the food is easily as good as anything you'd get over the hill in Dunedin, and Blackstone is a fantastic asset for Mosgiel.
We were visiting from Australia in March and ate at this wonderful place. It was one of the best meals we ate on our whole trip. The staff were wonderful (the owner even held our baby so my husband and I could eat our meals!), the atmosphere wonderful and the food was simply devine. I highly recommend checking this place out, you will not be disappointed!
My cousin and her husband with myself dinned at this restaurant on Sat 18th May, I was visiting from Auckland. I was very impressed with the service and the friendliness of this place, and extremely impressed with the food. If I lived in the area I would certainly frequent this cafe/restaurant often.
Well done, Kathy
Had a fantastic dinner at Blackstone Cafe last Saturday night. Meals came out hot and large. Very tasty. Fantastic service. I would definitely go back. Great menu for the family. Lovely surroundings
Coffee and cake! A place to meet friends and have a catch-up. Top price for average quality service, but as a treat, it beats other choices.
Have eaten here twice and the food was very good. Nice selection on the menu. Staff very good and a pleasant decore. Definitely on our list to return.
One of the greatest and busy cafe in the Mosgiel. U can find variety of cabin food and best coffee here. First time I tried Butter milk chicken, it's quite different.
Thank you for breakfast. We enjoyed the sweetness of the brioch French toast and the corn fritters with a bacon side was flavoursome. Warm and welcoming environment.
Not oozing any sort of fashionable appeal, but some great food served at this little place, which explains why it's always rammed at lunchtime! Easy parking nearby, genuinely friendly counter service, quick meal delivery. Apparently very well known for its range of keto meals and treats - the walnut slice was yums.

The best breakfast in Mosgiel and Service. AAA+
Good coffee and relaxing atmosphere. Haven't eaten anything yet but the menu looks inviting
Great range of keto foods. All that’s missing is bulletproof coffee and sugar free hot chocolate. Always enjoy going here.
Love this place!! Their salmon eggs Benedict is top notch. Had a lovely oat milk hot choc too!!
Coffee and a keto bagel takeout. Both delightful. Keto bagel had all the flavors, a bit lacking in texture, understandably as well. Coffee was perfectly extracted and the milk done to yumminess as well. Thanks guys.
Great slices and cabinet food. Lovely coffee
I loved this place, i had the big breakfast, which was good, I was wondering if you can swap items like the tomato for another sausage. I had fast and positive service from the staff, parking was easy and available. Would be good to have a little ramp at the door for people in wheelchairs and walkers like me.
