I wanted to try this place both sitting in and takeaway before making my review. Honestly, the food from here is delicious. Definitely on par (and in some cases, perhaps better) than other cult favourite Chinese restaurants in Auckland. My only issue was that the sweet and sour pork with pineapple was much better eaten in than takeaway, but I think that is to be expected to a degree. The hand pulled noodles are amazing! Definitely will be adding this restaurant to my list of favourites.
We ordered pork mince and cabbage dumpling and pork mince chives and prawn dumplings. They are very tasty. Good service manner, fast service. We definitely will come back.
Fast, volume, casual and low price! Service is good as wait staffs are always attending and deliver very fast. Location is amazing and accept BYO. I love this place.
Mr Zhous is conveniently located a block from our house and as my flatmate and I both LOVE their dumplings we get takeout from here at least once a month. I have never had a bad experience and the beef and fennel or chicken and coriander (for those non soap tasters) are the pick of a good bunch!
Food is good, but not amazing. Still a good place to go for some cheap dumplings and fried noodles. Would like to try their BYO option someday instead of just takeaway
Came here after a friend recommended the dumplings. Was pleasantly surprised how good it was for a psudo neighborhood spot. The eggplant and sizzling beef was also great!
This place is great and cheap too, we had five people, five dishes with drinks and came to $100. Not often you can find someware that is cheap and good, this place is cheap and good. Service is not the best but I can live with that when the food is so good.
I still haven’t tried better dumplings.
I just love them. The vegetarians ones are amazing.
Of course I will take out one star for the service... sometimes extremely unfriendly... though some times there is a man who is really good.
Tried Mr Zhou’s for the first time on Tuesday and the food was pretty good, the dumplings were meaty and flavourful, the chicken with cashew nuts was also a delicious dish however the chicken fried noodles lacked flavour. Overall good food, I recommend it
Dumplings are always usually always good but here, they're so so good! I recommend Chicken and Corriander dumplings or Pork, Prawn and Chives dumplings & also the chicken in hot chilli on rice. Everything I tried from here is really good.
Good place to eat out, foods are worth the price and not so expensive. I personally prefer a light flavour taste, so the food here suits me well. However, foods are not made to be super high standards, and more in a homemade style. My family do come again after our first try out!
Ohhhhhh the dumplings! They are heaven. Moist and not dry at all. Flavourful and always come with good quantity. Other items on the menu aren’t too bad but if you are looking delicious dumplings, this is the place.
The restaurant personnel was very friendly. The place is very clean. Their dumplings were delicious and good value. The salted fish chicken fried rice was very good. But the fried noodles were a bit oily. Overall it’s a good place to eat.
Came in for a family dinner tonight before my flight tomorrow. Sweet corn soup was thick. Stir fry pancake texture was hard to chew and kind of salty. Scallion pancake was nice, not too soft or crispy. Dumplings were average. Soup noodles tasted clean and not too salty. Loved the cucumbers and mushrooms. Would come again.
A very traditional Chinese dumpling house. Reasonable price and tasty food. Many Chinese restaurants serve dumplings, but this one could be top. Plus their friendly service.
Authentic Chinese food! I really like it. The moment you walk in, you can definitely smell how good your dish is going to be. I highly recommend making a booking before going as they are very busy.
Ordered fried chicken with hot chili sauce, sizzling beef and chicken & coriander dumplings.
Great tasting food and decent price. Sizzling beef was quite flavorful and dumplings were tasty as well.
Service was quick and promt with good portions.
Would recommend .
The best dumplings EVER! Simply love their chicken and coriander dumplings. I usually get takeaway every once in a while and dine in at times. This place is home. However, when comes to dine in, the staff can sometimes be a little rude, which can be ignored cause the food is Ah-mazing!
Aucklanders are how spoiled with dumpling restaurant choices and Mr Zhou’s would be a good option on your next “to-do” list. The highlight is their dumplings- much better than their competitors’. Big filling and not as fatty as some of other places. The choices are very good too. A good addition in the choice of having half plate of dumpling so that you can try multiple favours. The only improvement would be their pastry- could has been a bit thinner. We tried a salad dish -tiger salad- not quite what I remembered of a tiger salad in China but the taste was good. The sweet sour pork was good too- lean and a good balance of sourness and sweetness. The service was very efficient.
I absolutely love fresh dumplings so I thought of trying this one out. It’s a very modest fast food joint. I went for lunch where I went for the chicken & coriander dumplings ( didn’t feel like experimenting first time around) along with it I also ordered the handmade spicy chicken noodles. The dumplings were exceptionally soft with very thin layer & was served with chilly oil & soy sauce. It was very delicious & served pipping hot. The hand made noodles were the star of the show for me though since they were made exceptionally juicy & had the right amount of flavour. A little more meat would have been amazing though since it was just four pieces of chicken in it. Overall good for a quick bite.
Came here with a group of friends for dinner. We shared several dishes. Firstly the spring onion pancake, it was really nice and crispy and great dipped in soy sauce, would have liked just a bit more spring onion. We had the chicken and chive fried dumplings, the were ok, cooked well just found the flavour a bit to rich for my liking. We shared the fried chicken in sweet and sour sauce which was so good, it has a lovely sauce, not all gluggy like most sweet and sours. The vegetarian noodles we had were really good, the flavour packed a good punch and I enjoyed the texture of the bean sprouts mixed through. Lastly we had mixed vegetables with garlic, I thought they were cooked well, still had a nice slight crunch and the flavour was great. I thought the prices were really good too. I would definitely return
Love the food here. Dumplings are really good and portions for all the food are very generous. Have tried the chicken dumplings, tofu with cashew and deep fried chicken, all of them were very tasty. And we love the chilli oil!
Have only discovered this place last week and have already been twice lol by far the best dumplings I’ve ever tasted of, and everything else tastes great. Only problem is food doesn’t come out same time but other than that will be going back again soon lol
This is my first food review. I had such a good experience at Mr Zhou's dumplings. The food was amazing, especially the dumplings. Fried dumplings were best. Food was fast and I enjoyed the time there.
Got a takeaway here last night. Ordered chicken pan fried dumplings & hot and sour soup. Tasty! Quantity is quite good and great value for money. Will definitely come back for a dine in experience.
Went here for a quick and easy lunch, ordered the stewed beef with brown sauce, the pork prawn and chives boiled dumplings, the sweet corn and chicken soup and a ginger beer. All this came to just over $40.
The beef dish was a bit salty when you reached the centre where everything has been sitting in the sauce a while. The soup was a bit bland but that's quite common with this particular soup. The dumplings were great though!
One of my favourites. Great place for tasty fried vegan dumplings
and their sweet and sour tofu is amazing. It's nice and clean and the service is always fast and friendly. Great option for large groups too!
Liked the service, atmosphere and food. We were able to sit a little bit further away from the noise which was great. Had dumplings both steamed and deep fried, and a chicken dish and beef dish. Thought corkage though at $8 a bottle was a bit steep. However will probably return as food was good.
I went to this place after a storm hit Auckland, 2 powerlines were knocked down, resulting in loss of power for this business others nearby. I absolutely loved their service, they were able to only serve boiled dumpling. You had to pay cash or internet banking. Will return, the dumpling were flavoursome. Loved it.
We had been to the New Lynn location before, but it was our first time here. It can be quite busy at times like NL.
The decor is cheap & cheerful as is the food, but it you love real honest asian food you can’t go wrong.
We tried a range of dishes, all of which came out pretty quick. A highlight was definitely the sweet & sour chicken which was one of the best we’ve had. The dumplings were awesome too - a specialty of theirs of course.
Will be back & soon
A lot of Fridays are dumpling days, my daughter loves it. Dumplings are really good here, we like fried better. Tried a couple of other items on the menu, not great. I don't know if I would dine in here, there is hardly any ambience and a bit noisy for me. Staff is very efficient. I once called another branch by mistake instead of New Lynn, they took the order anyway and redirected internally to New Lynn for me. Communication was good between themselves. I picked up from new Lynn without a delay or messages up. Good portion size for a medium price.
Went for a flat dinner here we weren't greeted at the door and had to seat ourselves but otherwise we were served quickly and offered water straight away. Food was good we ordered there vegetarian dumplings, egg fried rice, chicken fried noodles, beef fried noodles and two pancakes. Nothing to complain about but wasn't super amazing. There was a bit of an issue with language barrier as we tried ordering drinks but the server had to go find someone else because he couldn't understand us. The portion size is excellent for the price $66 for all of that including drinks and we had plenty left over to take home.
A reasonable restaurant. The dumplings are good. Some dishes are a bit oily. Not enough veggie selection. We have been here a few times. Service is ok. When you need a dumpling fix, but not sure where to have dinner, this can be your choice.
Heard their dumplings were good, so ordered the fried Pork mince, Chives and Prawn dumplings! As well as the braised beef noodle soup, spring onion pancake and the combination fried noodles. Service was good, and staff were friendly. The combination noodles were good, but no the best I've ever had. I think it needed a bit more "wok hei" (flavour from stir frying on a wok). The dumplings, however were super nice and crispy. Apparently they make their own dumpling pastry as well! So good when you dip it in the soy sauce! The braised beef noodle soup was really delicious as well! The beefy sauce from the noodle soup was spot on, and the beef brisket was nice and tender, no fatty bits at all! The spring onion pancake had met my expectations, crispy and flaky! Will be keen for more dumplings and beef noodle soup in the future! Eggster Eats
Mr Zhou's Dumpling is our favourite Chinese restaurant in Auckland. We quite often visited its New Lynn branch before. We visited Mt Eden branch for dinner today, the food is excellent as always and the environment is cozy and tidy. Staff are very friendly and the service is quick. Every dish is tasty and dumplings are the best in Auckland. Strongly recommend it and definitely come back again.
A lot of people say Mr Zhou’s dumplings are very good as their branch in New Lynn is pretty famous, so I came here with a friend for lunch. It was empty when we went so I guess their business is during dinner. The lady who served us spoke fluent English which is a bonus for them, but at least smile and say something when customers ask for cutleries.
I got the egg and chives dumplings and she got the pork mince with mushroom dumplings in soup. There’s nothing wrong with the quality of the dumplings, the portion sizes were reasonable, and they were served hot. However the dumplings aren’t as good as people say they are, or perhaps we just ordered the wrong dish. The egg and chives lacked flavor as the chives flavor covered the eggs and tasted a little bland. The pork mince and mushroom had a stronger flavor as the marinated pork mince goes well with the mushroom juices which had some saltiness.
For dumpling restaurants like these, not all dumplings taste as good as people say they do because there’s so many varieties; so if you order the right ones, the experience would be fine. It was also a relief that the fillings tasted fresh and the skin wasn’t too hard. Overall, it was an alright experience, tbh.
Taste - 7/10
Size - 7/10
Price - 7/10
Service - 6/10
Bought some dumpling and noodles for takeaway. The staff was not very friendly and food was average. Maybe I will try something else next time to see if it’s just those dumpling and noodles I picked wasn’t their speciality...
Delicious dumplings! We will be back. We had the pork and fennel and chicken and coriander fried dumplings. We especially liked that you can get a half serve of dumplings so you can try more flavours. Also loved the spicy pork mince and bean sprouts on noodles - yummy.
These are the best dumplings I've ever had! I can't find anything even close to as good in Wellington. Please open a restaurant in Wellington!
LOVE PERTH/AUCKLAND FOOD
+4
Yum! Came for an early dinner on a Saturday. It was quiet but quickly started to fill! Service was prompt and the waitress/maybe the owner was friendly and we had a few jokes about me eating more than my partner lol dumplings were sooooo good. We read the reviews on here first so didn't even order anything else. The egg chive and prawn were my favourite.. we got them all fried and ordered 30 between both of us- it came to $26 total! We left happy and full and my mouth is watering talking about them. We will be back!!!
This place used to be a Vietnamese restaurant but is now a franchise of the Mr Zhou in New Lynn.
The place us clean and new. Staff are friendly and quite helpful. We were served tea straight away and offered choice of cutlery lol(chopsticks or forks).
They have vinegar, soy sauce and chilli sauce available on the tables. The fried rice was surprisingly good. I'm not usually a fan of getting fried rice but this one was fried really well and quite flavoursome.
I'm not really a fan of beef dumplings but the chicken and coriander was ok. The cashew chicken was full of flavour but not a dish I would choose. The fried noodles were generous and so was the fried rice.
They also let us split the bill between 5 people which was nice.
Used to visit this place quite frequently until I realised I should cut back on the dumplings. The chicken and chives dumplings are amazing. The ambience isn't great but can't complain for cheap eats. Gets quite busy so best to book a table or come earlier
Don't go to any other dumpling place!! Ever!!!!! This place has the best dumplings in Auckland. In New Zealand in fact.
The dumplings have the perfect skin to filling ratio and they are always so flavoursome and juicy. Fried or boiled, these delicacies can do no wrong. My personal favourite is the 三鲜.
The price is very reasonable and you can easily fill up two people under $30.
So many people reviewing this place low due to service, You dont come to Mr Zhous for the service you come for the food.
I've been to almost every dumpling joint in central Auckland and i still found myself traveling to New Lynn for Mr Zhous, When i found out they were opening down the road from me in Mt Eden i was excited, my excitement was warranted. Just as good if not better then Mr Zhous in New Lynn. My staples are Pork and Chive dumplings, Sizzling Mongolian beef and braised eggplant all of which i recommend. delicious.
I find the Mt Eden barilla dumplings and Mt Eden noodle cant hold a candle to Mr Zhous tasty fried dumplings. i cant recommend this place more highly for dumpling fiends such as myself.
Already fans of Mr Zhou’s in New Lynn, we were pleased to hear another one had opened up in Mt Eden. Hoping to have the same food standard we were used to, we ordered one of our favourites - Potato, eggplant and capsicum in garlic sauce and something we hadn’t tried - Fried tofu in chili black bean sauce. The potato, eggplant and capsicum was yum! All the vegies were cooked well and the potatoes were really tasty. The tofu dish was very well portioned and good value for money. The tofu was fresh and we enjoyed the black bean and chili sauce. We ordered a side of rice each, which went well with the dish and balanced the flavours of the sauce. Unfortunately, after our two dishes arrived we were told the rice would be another 10 minutes so we were half way through the dishes when it arrived. We would’ve been happy to wait 10 minutes longer if we knew they would arrive altogether. Other than that the service was decent and wait times were very minimal considering how busy they were.
The interior of the restaurant is tidy and clean but is a little outdated and could do with a bit of a spruce up. There is plenty of seating to dine in although they do get full during peak times so expect a short wait. Portion sizes are generous and good for sharing if you’re in a group. With such a big menu you won’t have trouble picking dishes to suit everyone..Be sure to try their dumplings!
Excited to know Mr Zhou open another branch in Mt Eden. We went to New Lynn branch a few times and always satisfy with the food quality and consistency.
Meet up with friends and decided to try this branch for early dinner, four of us ordered beef and onion fried dumpling, pork and fennel boiled dumpling and braised eggplant with brown sauce.
We were quite happy with the dishes, good dumpling (I would prefer chili oil with more chili flakes), eggplant menu always been our favourite (we ordered fried eggplant in New Lynn before and we love it!).
We arrived around 530pm so dishes came out quite quick. Service was ok, will be better with more staff later in the night as restaurant get very busy when we left. We were happy with the price too!
Dumplings are delicious! Great selection and perfect fried texture. Not as oily as barilla. Noodle soup was fab too! Quiet, friendly atmosphere. Service is genuinely nice, not pushy or overbearing and food came quickly! Larger than many similar establishments so you don't feel like you're being crammed in.
I have tried so many places to find the best dumplings in Auckland and I found them here! The pan fried chicken and chives dumplings are so good, it pairs very well with their house made chili oil. We’ve also had their yang chow rice and fried pork and pineapple with sweet and sour sauce - taste, portion, price = 10/10! Have been twice and so far the quality’s consistent. Happy to have listened to others’ great feedback about Mr. Zhou’s.
Dined at 1:30PM for lunch on a Wednesday but no one else at the restaurant!
The food was pretty good with the dumplings definitely being the highlight, ordered the pork & coriander flavour and we will probably be back to try the other flavours~
To note, their chilli sauce is more for the flavour rather than the spice level, but tasty nevertheless!
Waiter didn't say a single word while taking our order and at the cashier but we aren't bothered by it
Great, amazing, authentic, tasty 😋 Cosy little place. Highly recommend.
Dumplings 🥟 just wow, lightly seared, cooked perfectly 👌🏼
Noodles are hand made, soups are huge bowls with great flavours and ingredients.
Lots of menu choices at great prices. We were immediately served tea (complimentary) and when the food arrived the portions were large and delicious! We were the only people eating in (Thursday night) but there were quite a few picking up takeaways. Would absolutely recommend.
Food was amazing, great, quick service, and all for a very affordable price! Favourite dish was definitely the beef fried noodles. Massive portion sizes, so easily a lovely family feast vibe restaurant. Very attentive and good atmosphere in the shop. Chairs also had cushions on them which was a nice touch of comfort.
Great place for cheap dumplings and noodles. I would highly recommend the pork and chives dumplings, combination noodles and brown sugar pancakes. There is also a BYO available at $8 per bottle of wine and $3 per head for beer. The place is quite spacious and suitable for big groups as well—definitely a place to check out for some pre-drinks and food.
It’s a wonderful place for having Chinese dumplings. This is one the reasons of dining in Mr’ Zhou’s restaurant. Staff were nice and helpful when we were unsure about the food. Maybe next time, we will only order dumplings.
I always enjoy getting takeaways from Mr Zhou's Dumplings - Mt Eden. The food is delicious, served quickly and reasonably priced. The staff is also friendly. The picture is of fried lamb with cumin and braised eggplants with brown sauce (my favourite dish).
Good food and really good atmosphere. One star off because the Sichuan-style dishes we ordered were not as authentic as we would have liked and all portions were in our opinion on the light side. Plus the wait staff were in a bit of a fluster at rush hour. Make sure you call to book before arriving as they seem very popular at peak times. Dishes ordered - Spring Onion Pancake, Pork & Cabbage Dumplings, Hot & Spicy Beef, Dan Dan Noodles.
If you want bomb dumplings this is the place to go.
The deep fried eggplant stuffed with pork mince is just incredible. Genius.
My go to dine in dumplings.
(I go to new lynn mr. Zhou for takeaway because its closer to my house)
Great serving sizes, we ended up ordering too much, party of 3.
Had the:
Prawn dumplings, I think they could do with more prawns in them
Broccoli & crushed garlic, this was just perfect and light
Deep fried prawns, this came crumbed and was the best dish of the night I think
Deep fried squid with cumin, this was ok we thought too much batter in it
Crispy chicken in sweet sour sauce, the chicken was plain battered smothered in the sauce. I think it was good, a bit on the plain side but I liked it with the soy sauce and chilli oil.
Their Jasmine tea is yummy too.
All in all a full delicious meal, would come back there are plenty of things to try out of the menu. There is something for everyone.
Mr Zhou's is that friendly neighbourhood Chinese restaurant - their food is very affordable and generous in quantity and the customer service is decent. We didn't have to wait so long for the food to be served. Would highly recommend their dumplings.
Took my daughter here for a daddy daughter date, we loved all the food. Service was excellent. Highly recommend
Tasty meal and reasonable portion size. They don’t give you a printed itemised bill which is not great!
Was just looking for a random place for dumplings and choosing this place was the best choice. I ordered the wonton soup which was so worth the price, there was so much for what I paid for including the dumplings I ordered too. Great prices, much cheaper than I actually expected it to be. Amazing food, amazing staff, will definitely return again.
Came here after reading the write up in urban list. Walking in the place was almost packed and it got crazy after we were seated so expect a wait at peak times. The wait staff did get overwhelmed but they continued to try their best with a smile on their faces. The food was tasty but portions were on the smaller side compared to similar restaurants. Dumplings seem to be the most popular dish and the spring onion pancake was nice. The restaurant was cleaner than the average Sichuan restaurant which was great. I'd say Mr Zhou's is good for a quick simple dinner as parking is easy and plentiful around the area.
Great dining atmosphere and dumplings! Love the home made dumplings and noodles.
