The food was grat abd it was nice to choose ingridients we chose our taste atmosphere was great quality is good
This plate cost us $39 for 2 ppl. Expensive but worth it. If you like spicy, I recommend you to try this. The taste is really nice. This is my third time here and will come back for sure.
Love that you can choose the ingredients ... but be careful to not go crazy as it can add up $$$

If you are craving for some hot pot or just something spicy and asian in general, this is your place. Layers of spicy umami flavours coating your selected meat and veges. its not for the faint hearted especially if you order the HOT level of spiciness. But you will want to come back. Sure to satisfy your spicy food craving. Remember the heavier the ingredients that you pick, the more expensive it is. 10/10
Great dry pot eatery. Great range of food selections especially seafood.

Wow it was a pretty good experience. Love the malaxianguo here. It was delicious but maybe too spicy for my taste. I had around thirty dollars worth with two others and I was full and satisfied. I recommend to go here it’s really yummy and affordable and the hygiene is better then other hot pot places I’ve been too.
First time having dry hotpot and I absolutely loved it! If you like spicy food and hotpot you should definitely give this place a shot! Essentially you pick your own food similar to a buffet, and then they weigh it at the checkout and take it in and cook it for you and bring it out! It took 5 minutes for my order to be ready, the place is super efficient and I definitely will come back and try the other locations!
My only issue is that the staff spoke only Chinese to me, and being born and raised here I can understand enough to communicate but the staff had a really thick accent and when I couldn't understand he looked at me like I was dumb and continued repeating the same sentence over and over in Chinese even after I said I couldn't understand. 😅A bit awkward but not a big deal.

First time I had been to this kind of restaurant. You gathered the ingredients that you want in one big bowl, and you gave it to the cashier. They weighted it on, you got to choose the base and the spiciness level. You paid by weight and waited for them to cook your food. We ordered dry with mild level of spiciness.
We were a bit worried how the food’s gonna be like, but it turned out to be delicious. There were a lot of ingredients to choose and we were not sure if our combination of ingredients would tasted okay, but everything turned out to be great and mixed very well.
We ended up spending 20$ per person. We will definitely coming back here again in the future.
‘Must try place’ in Auckland. Highly recommended.
I felt in love with their mala xiang guo. My order was ready promptly, service was great. Definitely will come back.
Came here once and ordered one of the soup as a base and that was unfortunately way too spicy for me. Went back and tried the tangy dry pot and that was totally amazing.
Finally found the place that makes the best mala xiang guo! Price must have recently gone up making it more expensive than cbd but their ingredients taste and look more fresh, and the final product is very delicious. It worked out to be only $16 per person so it was actually cheap ($78 split by 5 people).
We tried the malatang afterwards. It tasted good as well but we should have got the soup dish before the stir fry as it tasted bland after finishing the strong concentrated stirfry version. Anyway food is 5/5.
The floor is wet inside with residue from ingredients maybe and there is no place to put your bag so be careful but this is definately more clean and modern than cbd.
I tried Mala Xiang Guo for the first time here and I wasn't expecting much at all, but I actually really liked it, even more than Malatang. The price was reasonable, the food was spicy but delicious and the service was great, too.
In my opinion 一麻一辣 (yi ma yi la) is the best mala food place in Auckland. I personally like having 麻辣香锅 (ma la xiang guo) from the place.
Atmosphere: 3/4
You will need to street park. The place cannot cater for any big group. Ideal for 2-4 people-group.
Food: 4/4
You can choose to have one of three options. However most people go for either; 麻辣香锅 (ma la xiang guo, dry) or 麻辣烫 (ma la tang, soup). Refer to the pictures.
If you are new to eating this type of food, follow the instructions as per below;
(1) Get a table.
(2) Find yourself a metal pot by the raw food and put inside what you want. I love having: tofu, needle mushrooms and instant noodles in mine, but feel free to choose what you want.
(3) Ask for either dry (麻辣香锅) or soup (麻辣烫) and let them know your spice level.
(4) Pay by the weight.
Service: NA
You have to self service at the place, so can't really say much about the service.
Cost: 4/5
Depends on how much you eat. I normally share a pot with a friend or two and spend about below $20, which isn't the cheapest for this type of food. However, the price point is similar to elsewhere.
Recomend the place to everyone who don't mind eating spicy food, and have a friend or two who you can take to share a pot with you.

Decent Chinese Hot pot place in Dominion Road.
This place had all the lit ingredients which were not so common in other hot pot places, seemed to be cheaper than the imax one too.
However the malatang’s soup was not as good as imax and even the malaxiangguo was not as good as Special Pot’s one.
Last time I went to hot and spicy pot I got the soup pot which was real good. I like some spice but cant handle anything crazy so I got it in mild which was just right for me! This time I went and got the dry spicy pot, i like the dry spicy pot more than the soup pot! Will definitely be visiting again soon!!
After seeing others on instagram like @eatlitfood and @heartshrooms singing the praises of the Dry Hot and Spicy Noodles of this place, I finally got around to trying it.
While I was a bit cautious and skeptical at first as to how good it was as I have never tried this kind of dish before and the freshness of the ingredients seem questionable, it really turned my opinion around after taking the first two bites of it. The sauce is amazing. It is slightly sweet, salty and even though I asked for it to be just a bit spicy, the spiciness hits me right in my throat on the first swallow. After taking 3 or 4 mouthful of this, that's when the the numbness of my tongue starts to kick in. I love the mochi-ess noodles they have which I think is potato or kumara noodles, I am not sure.
Service of this place is as some of the reviews on Zomato say depending on who you get I think, the first person greeted us in in a friendly manner and told us to sit anywhere but did not explain how it works. I think if someone who has never seen it before might have been waiting for someone to come serve them rather than picking the giant bowl they provided at the table near the food to select the ingredients you want for yourself. Then, bring the bowl to the counter for them to weigh the bowl and they will charge you by the weight. The other person who served us at the counter when we were paying for it wasn't so friendly.
The food in my opinion is expensive at NZD 0.35 per 10 grams which came out to be 21 dollars for 600 grams of food in total. So it might be more worth it to take the more expensive items like scallops or prawns even though I was tempted to take more udon noodles.

We always bought take away spicy dry pot from this restaurant. Really clean and fresh food display and environment is great too. Service is friendly and polite.
The restaurant is very busy and the food are served very fast. The customer service is average. However the quality of food do not achieve my expectation. The food are too sweet for me.
Popular chain/style of food in China, pretty authentic as well!
When you walk into the restaurant, you will see a wide selection of different meats, vegetables, tofus. Grab a bowl and simply just choose what you want in your pot, then choose from 4 different ways of cooking your ingredients. Price is by weight so the more you get, the higher the price. It can get pricey if you are a large eater! Recommend going with a friend and sharing one pot.
Super tasty!!
Love this place. Good value and tastes great. Always go for the milks spicy dry hot pot. Quite clean compared to other hot pot establishments with food which is left outside to be picked.
Awesome hot and spicy pot my first time even experiencing this kind of dine in experience and it was well worth it. I give this a 4 star I feel like the service could have been better, it would help if there were tags to say what is in each container, especially if your not familiar with some of the items. Overall the food was amazing!
First time trying dry pot!
I got the Spiciest one and it was too spicy for me haha
But the sauce was super flavourful with lots of different spices.
I’d definitely go back and try a less spicy one:)
First time to have dinner with my flatmates. Grab your favorite foods in the big bowl with four hundred grams above. Then choose your pot with different cooking types you like. BLING! Start to eat your own pot!
If there’s someone who scared of pepper, you can get non-spicy pot either.
Great amazing food and cheap. You pick your own ingredients, more than 40 items to choose, from type of noodles to vegetables to meat to seafood. Price is charged according to weight at the end. You can then choose either soup based or fried like I did. -
One of my go to spicy pot places, definitely one of the yummy houses on dominion road. Feeds as many or as little people as it is pick your own and you have four options of cooking style! Don’t forget to mention spicy level!
This is kind of an interesting place to try if you haven't done this sort of meal before.
So when you go in, you get to pick your own ingredients as they are (raw), and there is quite literally a wall of ingredients for you to pick from. Once you've got what you want, you take the bowl of stuff to the counter and they cook it for you, two ways 1) dry pot or 2) pot with soup.
Both are very good, I prefer the dry pot, it's spicy off course, but you can also choose how spicy you want it, so there's an option for everyone here.
Quite a casual place really, no bookings are taken, just walk in and grab a table, not much table service as far as that goes, it's kind of find your place, pick your stuff and get eating.
Good place to go with friends and share GIANT size of food. Well it depends how much you select food $3.50 per 100 gram. I’ve ordered Sichuan speciality pot but saw that most people chose spicy dry pot and those looked good! The bowl they use to serve is really massive!! Selections of food was alright and the Sichuan soup was ok. It’s not bad but it’s not that wow. The dry option is the best!
Have been to this restaurant for twice. Even though I am not a Chinese, I can proudly say that I am addicted to Chinese food, especially the mala (mara?)!!!!!! Since Im crazy about the spiciness, I tried the very hot level for both dry hot pot and hot pot soup during my first visit here. But I have to say you must be super careful to order the 'very hot' one cuz it was really... (like really) hot! Hahahaha So for the second time, I ordered medium spicy, and it was just perfect spiciness for me! I am just so happy that this restaurant exists!

Hot and spicy pot for lunch during windy day it’s soooo nice.. went here with girls from the office for quick lunch.. we have to pick up the vegetables and meat from the shelf by ourself 😜 and it’s hard to decide what i want 😁 everything looks nice and fresh.. then we can choose spiciness of the soup.. i choose mild and it’s spicy enough for me.. next time plan to choose the dry one
Loveeee this place!
Hot and spicy pot lets you choose what you want, from a raw selection of meat, seafood, noodles, tofu and vegetables. There’s so many options that you can mix and match the possibilities are endless.
After choosing your pot ingredients, you can choose the way you want it to be cooked. I personally like the spicy dry pot and you pay by weight (seafood with shells weigh more so you pay more).
Much recommended. Very addictive.
This is without a doubt my most pleasant discovery thus far in 2018. Being ethnic Chinese I actually have never had something like this in my life before, but what a marvellous find it is.
In summary the restaurant offers 1, 100 or infinite number of dishes, depending on how you look at it. You choose and mix a multitude of raw ingredients, ala at a buffet. The ingredients include meats, vegetables, seafood, manufactured foods such as fish balls. Then once you have gathered together all your ingredients, you proceed to take it to the counter and they will cook it. Cooking methods can either be dry, where they cook it like a stir-fry, or be cooked while immersed in a soup broth, for which you will receive your ingredients back immersed in soup broth.
Of particular note is the spice and chillies associated with this type of dish. You can choose the level of spiciness according to your tastes.
Pricewise, each person can expect roughly $25.
This type of dish is loved by almost all Chinese and I'm sure no matter what your cultural or culinary background is you will enjoy it.
Always Has Very fresh food. Love coming here for our spicy fix. Like the idea that you can choose your ingredients and the way it is cooked. 35 for two People if you are careful on What you get. Fast and friendly service helps too
Food is ok in quality but good in variety. Hygiene is average. Service is average, could use a smile guys. Spice is next level, damn its hot in here. Price.. well avoid all the heavy seafood because it would cost you an arm and a leg. Overall not bad!
I love their spicy pot! I go there about one or two times a week. Some times there is no table at dinner time. I tried their spicy soup, but it wasn’t that nice as I expected. So I always have their pot!
If you're a fan of Sichuan food, this place is worth a visit! Basically you choose what kind of meats, veges and noodles you want ($3.50 per 100 grams), and the pot selection. My friends and I chose the Spicy Dry Pot, which they pretty much stir fry all our ingredients with a twist of Sichuan sauce. I'm not a fan of spicy food, however it was just the right amount of spice! In our pot we added veges, thick noodles, fungus/mushrooms, tofu, fish balls, etc. It'd be good to share one with two or three people. Customer service is okay, but the food was delicious!
I've been here a few times and it's always busy. The traditional Mala-tang where you get to pick any food you want, choose the cooking style and spiciness and they will cook it for you. The standard $3.50 per kilo is fine but I always feel a bit ripped off because of the weight of the bowl. The difference is that this place has a selection of seafood that is definitely going to make you drool. Don't forget to buy your bubble tea from next door while you wait though!
We went here last Tuesday. It was good experience.
You can pick your favourite food in the shelf then bring to the counter, the stuff weigh the total amount then tell you the price. They offer dry pot, soup pot and marinated pot, we chose dry pot. The selections of food are various, especially sea food.
If you like spicy food, you'd better tell them "the most spicy", because we chose rare spicy, but we didn't feel any spicy at all.
Good place to go.
We have been here many times. It always can satisfy my appetite. I think it is one of the most authentic spicy dry pot in Auckland. But the cook seems to put different amount of chilli each time. Anyway, the tasty is the same.
Been here three times now - its yum and the fact you get to pick your ingredients is great. Grab a bowl and tongs when you enter. Pick your ingredient, weigh up at counter, select soup/sauce and pay!
First time we got carried away $60+ including drinks, the next two times $45~ including drinks. All shared between two people. We always leave super full. The price is $3.50 per 100g, so its a surprise when you go to pay :)
Awesome selection of seafood and processed meats (meat/tofu/fish balls). Meat is typical steamboat thinly sliced meats.
My picks for sauce is 2 and 3 if you like spice and soup! The tangy sauce (4) is ok, but got bored of it real quick!
You can order rice at the counter, so you could just get a mixture of meat and veg - skip the noodles - and have with rice. This way should be more cost effective.
My chinese friends took me to this place last night. The restaurant must be popular among chinese community as it was packed for a Monday night.
So basically you grab your bowl and choose meat, seafood, veges, noodles and etc then if you bring it to the counter they weigh your bowl and you just have to choose your pot flavour and pay for the weight of your chosen ingredients.
Then the food comes to your table as you can see in the pictures.
There was a variety of ingredients available! Although the quality of meat was not very good there was a heaps of seafood you can choose. I think seafood lovers will like this place.
The dish tasted good. I think it would have been better if it wasnt my first experience.
This place is quite pricy. 25~50pp based on what you choose for your pot.
Caught up with two of my mates I hadn't seen in a while and they introduced me to this place. It was a rainy night that night and this place was perfect for a cold night. The restaurant is a little small but good for a converstaional catch up.
So how this place works is you pick your meats aamd veges, take it to the counter, they weigh and charge then cook it for you. We had like a soupy and spicy dish and it was perfect for the night.
Those who do not like spice be warned. It did cost a bit for three of us but thats probs because we were heavy eaters at the time. The dish was really good but not amazing for the price....the question is....
Was it worth it?
For me no...not at that price.
Update 24.08.17
It's $3.50 per 100g - whatever you choose to put in your bowl. In saying that, I am changing my mind about the place as the flavor has changed and not as good as before. The dry frying pot is now quite flavorless and watery in a way not like before they used tons of dry chilies and fresh garlic and ginger. Now the seasoning tastes like it's coming out of those jars. Quite gutted really.

I'm addicted! The food here is very good. Just don't go there on the weekend as it does get very, very busy. I really love their famous dry pot dish. I'm a regular customer.
A lot of choices for pick your own. Good place to have a hot & spicy pot when the weather is cold. They only have 3 different soup paste. You can choose either stir fried or hot pot. Price is $4.9/ 100 gr. I think you can get a free drink during the happy hour from Monday to Friday if your food is >$30.
Will come back for sure.
Such a cool lil Asian eatery. The spicy calamari is my fav, stir fry pork trotters, even the pork rib noodle soup. Been here a few times now. Great service, very friendly and the restaurant is so cosy. 5/5
Always yummy and .....spicy at your preference!!! They gave free drinks (and rice if im not mistaken) for my order of NZ$48. Worth it, with variety of seafoods to choose from!
Pretty yum, great selection, fast service, extra topping tray still is not as superior as Zhang Liang malatang in north shore from what I’ve compared so far, cost is fair, and the options are pretty standard (as of 28/5/23 4.9/100g). The stir fry options wasn’t the best I’ve had and I prefer one out east 100 spicy house I believe it is, but nevertheless a decent place in the heart of dom rd!
Yum variety!
The broth is so flavourful and rich. Yet, it doesn't make you feel bloated. It is slightly expensive though. However, the variety of veggies and protein is commendable and of good quality.
Various selections of toppings you can choose from protein to greens. The hot and spicy pot broth was legit, you can customize how spicy you want it to be. $4.9/100gram
Five starts for food coz it was just perfect. It was our first time trying this place and it did not disappoint. Good potion size as well, we had to do takeaway as we couldn’t finish. The pricing was decent too. It’s a very good option to go to during winters. Will come back for sure.
This is one of our go to spots for delicious comfort food.
There is a large variety of ingredients to choose from to put into your bowl.
They cook it for you according to your selected base (we always go for the tangy base).
The best part is the sesame dip which is free of charge.
Highly recommend!
There were a lot of people during lunch on weekdays, and it was good because it was not salty and too stimulating.
The best Malatang place in Auckland! You can choose the spicy level. Even hot is quite spicy, so be careful!
I really miss malatang korean style but i couldn’t find any in central cbd so i always going this chinese hot pot place and i ordered non spicy soup and at home i added chilli oil and peanut sauce so yummm! $37 haha lil pricy but how can i made this home so..

If you want to try something spicy, this would be good option. But you need to know what you putting in to your dish. Don’t eat something you don’t know. 🥶
If you love spicy food, this will be the place to be. I love the varieties of toppings you can choose from..and they also have the sauce station. I chose the medium spicy for dry mala and they are too spicy for me but addicting. The flavour and spiciness w white rice are just so perfect together. The rice bowl only cost 1 dollar . I will be returning customer but i will order less spicy one .. and keen to try the one with soup too.
All time favorite for hot & 3 level of spiciness of either soup or fried version. Over 50 choices of both vege, hot pot sliced meats, noodles, frozen & live seafood like paua, lobsters. Free Rice accompanied orders before 3pm. Under 15 tables for sitting customers. Call in to order & pick up later service. Slices thin bean curd skin, fried tofu pieces, coriander stalks is highly recommended as it soaks up the sauce & flavors. Self service Free hot & cold water. Good & prompt service🙏

Definitely recommended for meat lover and vegetarians. We will definitely back again. This is our first time, and it has already left us a delicious memory. It has a wide range of food choices for both meat lovers and vegetarians.
