A local corner vietnamese Spot, with a variety of dishes. The pho has a good flavour, which can't hurt with a spoonful of chilli. They got all the condiments on lock to add encase you like an extra kick. The spring rolls really hit too with good flavours and crunch. Noodle Salad was huge with a big bowl on nuac cham. Great lil place and good service!
Had dinner here the other night
Place was clean and staff very helpful and happy
Ordered grilled chicken , wonton soup which was huge and full of flavour and to finish it off braised pork belly with rice food came out quick and hot very happy !
We will definitely be back to try more from the menu
Very good service and staff is helpful. Food is delicious and at reasonable price will come back with my family again
Really good soup, amazing rice with chicken!! Lovely staffs
The mixed reviews pretty much some up this place. Can be a hit or miss depending on what you order. The pho or noodle soup dishes are really good. However the chicken curry was quite bad.. runny and tasteless. Would be back for the noodles.
Always been a huge fan of this restaurant. Tried almost everything available. Hands down a lover of the wonton noodle soup especially in the winter. Price and portion match and all in all very well done :)
Went there on a Sunday at midday for lunch when it wasn't that busy. I was attracted by the affordable cost, my craving for some noodle soup, and the large portion sizes other customers seemed to have. I got the Phom Ohen Rice Noodle Soup for $13 and it was gigantic. As someone who always makes sure to clean a bowl completely, it felt impossible. I made sure to eat my $13 worth at least. The fish balls and other meats were delicious and the soup was flavoursome. Definitely kept me full for the rest of the day (which is a good thing for me!). Service was fast and I was served hot green tea upon sitting down at a table. I would definitely go again to try something new.
Great lunch food. Staff are friendly. Cost $25 for two people. Vietnamese and Chinese food. The taste is good for the price point and the area.
Food: 4.3/5
Service: 4/5
Overall: 4.3/5
Ordered #19 special beef noodles and I loved it! First of all it was such a big serving of noodles with a plate of bean sprouts. The rice noodles soaked all the flavour of the soup. Usually when I go to a Vietnamese restaurant, the beef served was usually over cooked but this time when I got the beef I got was both cooked and slightly raw so I feel like I’m eating Pho also:) there were not many beef balls but they tasted alright.
My flatmates and I thought we’d check out what all the hype was about, so we headed on down to Hai Phong. We were all exhausted from a hard day of being Yo Pros and we had high hopes (just like Panic at the Disco has had recently) in the nearby restaurant that our flatmates bf had absolutely RAVED about. The food came out within minutes (no exaggeration) of putting the menu down - A bloody plus Hai Phong!! The food portions were outta this world, I think my plate would’ve fed the four of us to be honest. Food was all good, prices were better. The only thing letting this Vietnamese goodness down, and the reason as to why I’ve selected a 4 star rating instead of 5, is because the service wasnt as friendly as it could’ve been. OH AND the menu doesn’t state that they have Vegan options - yes I know I’m not Vegan, however how am I meant to know if I can bring my friend Brooke here or not
This place is one of my go to restaurants when I'm wanting a nice vietnamese soup or vietnamese curry. There food is amazing, the customer service is ok but I still recommend this place
Our favourite restaurant for a quick, healthy and satisfying (portions are huge) meal! We dine here at least once a week and have for over year. Their food is consistently good and staff are always friendly. Grilled Chicken Noodle Soup or Grilled Chicken Vermicelli are my go to choices!
I was eating here last Friday order the chicken noodles soup and the seafood noodles soups taste great , service is good the shop was very clean love to come back again soon
Have been long time costomer ....loved most of whats on the menu...esp the sweet an sour pork and chicken wings....the owner is a nice man who likes his beer.......but due to one rude waitress and perverted costomer....i no longer go.......i will miss charming friendly service of the owners family....and miss the atomosphere when it was not so full of gossip......no hard feelings..............and the green tea is great
I dined in at Hai Phong around 3pm on a Sunday. It seemed to be the busiest place in the area, popular for families. I ordered the 'Tofu In oyster sauce on rice' it arrived promptly along with my complimentary tea. I found the ride a bit gluggy and over done aside from that my meal was nice. Friendly service, prompt, clean and tidy though very casual. Will return again to try their Pho.
The place been around for more than 10 years, used to eat every week. Always enjoy the environment and the friendly staff, now I am moving to a new area due to work matters. I am gonna miss the shop, the food and the people... (LOVE) (PEACE) (WILL COME BACK)
First time to the place, surprisingly good. Ordered beef brisket noodle soup and chicken wings, probably the best I have tasted in Auckland, price is reasonable compare to other Vietnamese restaurant. However, no beverage available, next time BYO... Worth trying 5 stars.
I like this restaurant very much. I always enjoy my dinner there. The waitress is very polite. The food is cheap and delicious, with many meat. I like seafood noodle soup and spring roll, especially the one without fried.
Hai Phong is a solid representation of Vietnamese casual dining. Sure the service and mannerisms of staff might be a huge 0/5 as many people here may suggest. But if you're looking for a place with exquisite oral sensations, I 'Hai'ghly recommend Hai Phong. Ordered soup noodle on both occasions of coming here, value was OK, but the taste blew me away like a phong 4.5/5
The best restaurant on the North Shore...food and service is outstanding...I have gone to the restaurant off and on for many years...they are consistently amazing...every time I go there the staff make me feel very comfortable and are very welcoming....the food is affordable and delicious ....I highly recommend this place ....
Had a great meal at Hai Phong. The spring rolls are the best I have ever had, both here and in Asia. Really enjoyable family run restaurant that I would strongly recommend.
This restaurant is amazing! People seem to have too much expectations for the price they pay. If you need a five star experience please go pay more somewhere else. This restaurant provides absolutely quality food for the price! Totally worth the visit. Delighted every time. Try the Hainan Chicken Rice and Beef Tendon Noodles.
Local Northcote lad here
Just want to say a great thanks for the chief for producing dishes that are consistent all the time. Busy or not the food always taste great. Price is excellent especially for the amount of food that we get served in out plates. Probably one of the better restraunt that you go for in terms of great taste and price. I also enjoy the free byod rule that the place has, it's great for a casual get together with mates as well. Thanks hai phong please never leave Northcote and do not change your cooks.
I had been there twice. I ordered deep fried spring rolls, hananiese chicken rice, beef tender & gravy noodle soup. It was nice but not the best.
I love this restaurant. The foods beautiful. And the boss is nice men. So I will go back again. Yummy!👍😊 The restaurant is very cleanly and the Chinese tea taste good.
Food is delicious and great value, i always come here during my lunch breaks to have a quick meal thats good for on the run. I always get my usual sweet and sour pork or chicken on rice. The owner is very friendly and easy going
I am definitely a loyal fan of this restaurant. The pho was like what I had in Vietnam before, and I like the Garlic Pork Ribs best.I and my family have been consumimg like 5 years continuely in this restaurant, the taste is always like what I want.I have to say its a cost-effective place for families^_^ The boss likes beer and he always offer one glass to my dad…lol…
Ok so It's not strictly traditional Vietnamese but close enough that probably only people who have spent a bit of time in Vietnam would know. Has Chinese on the menu also.
But.... it IS Yum , satisfying and fantastic value for Money.
When a family of four can go and eat and drink for under $50 it has to be good value.
We Dine there and get takeaway also and have never been disappointed.
Love their pork spare ribs and braised tofu with fillet fish! obviously restaurant and places have different styles of cooking vietnamese food but for this store in particular reminds me of my mums cooking which i haven't eaten since living away from home. I come here whenever i can with my work mates and have a few drinks and chat, its a good atmosphere to just chill and dine. Would come here again with some friends!
I usually go there once a week with my family. Yummy food & good price.
I love mongolian beef, special vermicilly and salted fish fried rice.
So after returning from vietnam my body was in dire need of pho. I scanned the menu (in English and chinese) and saw about 20 versions of soup.
I was after pho ga...chicken soup.
How do you want it? The waitress asked??
The traditional way? My response was met with a raised eyebrow.
Settled on the plain chicken in the soup (and not grilled or fried)
Whilst the broth was nice enough it was missing some of the pivotal ingredients in the pho. Nice enough but not my pho. Sadly! The search continues....
I would wonder how this restaurant has got a low rate only 2.4. I have been here so many times. The taste is not the best but if you are a hunger, this restaurant can give you a full tummy. Good portion and cheap.
In Northcote area, I would recommend this restaurant.
Comfort food!! spicy pork belly and spicy pork spare ribs are the bomb! And it's not that spicy which is nice. The serving is pretty big and very affordable. 😊
Food is vietnamese/chinese but more Chinese styled... Either way i think there food is good. I've been to a lot of vietnamese restaurants and they all have there own style of cooking, So this restaurant is definitely different from the authentic vietnamese restaurants i've been too... My favourite dish here is the special vermicelli and black pepper beef on rice. Well flavoured good price and decent presentation. If I'm in this area i would come here again.
I live around this area and have been coming to this restaurant from time to time for many years. I always order there pork spare ribs and braised tofu fish fillet. You get what you pay for and the portion is enough to fill you up. From time to time there service can be abit slow but its understandable considering they get quite busy in the afternoon and the evening, that goes for any restaurant to be honest. Service wise its good. English may not be there first language but they still understand what i say when i tell them i want to add extra things to my meal like spices.. Overall i think this is a really good restaurant when you're craving some vietnamese/chinese food in the local area. I always leave here satisfied.
Great little cafe-style place nestled in the Northcote Town Centre. I love to eat the crispy spring rolls, beef pho and chicken or pork chop on rice. On the occasions I've eaten here I've always found the service to be welcoming. My go-to place for a quick and tasty meal.
I actually really enjoy this restaurant. It's a mix of Vietnamese/Chinese food. I have been coming here from time to time for years. The portion of the food is perfect and worth your money. Food hygiene is A which is a bonus for you health freaks. English may not be there first language but they try there best and I give them props for that. I'm not really fussed about how the restaurant looks as to me it looks perfectly fine compared to other asian restaurants I've been to. Either way I'm not really fussed about it. Overall food is great, service is great, never left here disappointed :) It may or not suit some peoples taste buds but theres no harm in trying new things!
If you're in the area, do give Hai Phong a try--you won't be disappointed. This humble eatery is located in the blocks of Northcote shopping centre; across the road from Taiping. It doesn't give much in the ambience department; just basic Asian restaurant, but with really friendly staff, quick service and good food that is reasonably priced and comes in huge portion.
Their pho is excellent; clear broth (that tastes homemade compared to the bland version of commercialised Vietnamese food joints in Auckland) with generous meat topping and soft rice noodles. Do ask for a special order--their lemongrass chicken, but ask for chicken rice instead of normal rice. The pairing results in amazingly good comforting Asian meal, that comes with a bowl of delicious broth as well. Good stuff!
I recommend Hai Phong for a quick homemade tasting Vietnamese fix, especially if you live nearby.
The menu offered a wide range of options, from fragrant pho to flavorful stir-fried noodles. The service was friendly and attentive, enhancing the overall dining experience.
The fusion of Vietnamese and Chinese flavors created a unique culinary journey. The restaurant's attention to detail in presenting the dishes was commendable, and the flavors were authentic and satisfying. If you're looking for a place that excels in both Vietnam and Chinese cuisine, this restaurant is definitely worth a visit.
Great portion and tastes not bad but food is not very authentic to me…, you can give it a try if you’re in the area
Delicious affordable and authentic. Menu had plenty of options. On arrival I was served tea. Service was quick and very relaxed. I had the phò and Vietnamese fried springrolls. Portions were generous. Great place for a casual lunch or dinner.
Tried this place for the first time tonight and wow. We will definitely be back to try more on this diverse menu. We ordered mostly chinese dishes and the flavour was very authentic. The portion sizes were great and prices very reasonable. Will be keen to try some of the Vietnamese menu food.
more of an Asian fusion than a Vietnamese nonetheless generous portions fast service delicious meal good value for money definitely recommended
A nifty find in the middle of Northcote Shopping Centre. Hai Phong is the corner shop along with other eateries on the street.
As mentioned by other reviewers, quick service and affordable price are the standout qualities of this restaurant. The phò with chicken was superb, and the Haiwanese chicken on rice was great as well, but the rice was a little salty for my liking. I'll be coming back to this place to try out other dishes.
The patrons mainly consisted of Asians, but they were diverse. There were couples, work colleagues, singles, families, etc. Hai Phong appears to be an eatery for all ages and backgrounds.
Me and husband come here for the first time to grab some soup and it was delicious..
I order seafood noodle soup and my husband order braise beef noodle soup. Both are so yummy,, also the portion was really big,,
We are so surprised, because the price was cheap for such a big portion..
We will be back here again for sure..
I go here all the time Food is good and tasty and staff are friendly. Theres so many hating as trolls in the comment section that are in their feelings that are trying to destroy this business because it’s popular when they don’t have any facts
Have been coming here for probably around 20 years - ever since I was a kid. Have since grown up and moved away from the area but I still love coming here every now and then. Food is delicious, best pho I’ve had out of Asia, fast service, very generous portions, low prices. Might be the nostalgia talking, but I love this place ❤️❤️
Love this place, best pho in Auckland.
Food comes out quick, service is good and place is always busy. Prices have gone up but happy to pay when food is always good.
They got more staffs. Love the chicken with rice. Really big dishes
Vietnamese/ Chinese, maybe more like southern Chinese like Hainan? Either way their meals are great. Great taste, great in value, it’s the only bowl of noodle I couldn’t finish due to the portion. I would totally come back here again!!
Delicious and affordable Viet/Chinese food. I had the grilled pork chop w vermicelli, and the pork grilled at the right amount. The deep-fried wontons were such a steal for $6, and had a thick prawn filling. If you are after a quality meal that's not going to cost a lot, I highly suggest this place.
Five star for this style of authentic dining, generous tasty servings, plenty of variety and modest pricing.
Service was quick and friendly.
Plenty of seating in this corner positioned restaurant with big windows to watch the Northcote patrons going about their business.
Always good.
You can change rice to fried rice for extra $3
