Thanks for a wonderful evening, the khan. This open kitchen grill experience never ceases to impress me. My partner and I ate to our fullest .. hence “an all you can eat buffet” The pancakes are still the same like i remembered from the Gengys days, soft and fluffy. Probably the best buffet on the shore.
Enjoyed my meal here, has a wide range of meats and veges. Was able to pick and choose what you want to be cooked by chefs. The pancakes and ice cream was also really good. Would definitely return. Atmosphere is nice and service is good. Only downside is having to wait for food to be cooked.
Rarely do I rate well or write a review about a casual buffet restaurant. The Khan definitely gave me a lovely experience. The selection of meats and veggies that they have, combined with the classic of the Genghis Khan experience: the ability to compose your own recipe.
Of course not everyone will be satisfied all the time with how they cook or handle your food on the flat grill but it's more than good enough for me.
They also have the lovely and wide range of side dishes and salads. Their honey glazed kumara stole the show for me. I probably had more of that than the meat. Fried chicken was lovely, so were the spicy beans.
The highlight of any complete meal is however the dessert. They do the fluffiest and tastiest pancakes, and coming out from a bbq buffet? They put the biggest smile on my face. Cooked evenly, light and fluffy, very much the quality of pancakes I would usually pay good money for. And, you get to be an artist again with this one and decorate it. A few sauces and ice cream below par but seriously I would love to come next time just to have pancakes.
Located out north shore with heaps of free car park 2 mins away away from the restaurant (we've only been there for dinner so I'm not sure if you have to pay druing the day to park there)
Very clean place with such friendly staff. Customer service is always great here. One of our (Kai Mai) family go to places if we all want to dine with each other weither it's a birthday anniversary or farewell.
Just like Genghis Khan but better as you get a shabu shabu station all inclusive for $28.o5 per adult - $1 if you go on your birthday and have a 4 paying adults:)
You also can't go wrong with their fluffy pancakes and ice cream flavors.
The khan has been my go to place when I crave for some really good grill. The place has been revamped since its last owners and my oh my what a transformation it has undergone. Not only has the ambience become more lively but the food is top notch as well. The staff are friendlier and the choices are will just making you coming back for more. The lamb shoulder here is to die for and trust me if you’re a lamb lover you just can’t leave without trying it in their steamboat section.
This is my all time favourite Mongolian buffet. I come here super often and the quality has never decreased.
Service: 8/10
There isn’t much to judge since it’s mostly self serve. I asked for the hot pot and the waiter quickly brought me a stove. The people who cooked the food were also enthusiastic and everyone seemed very cheerful.
Food: 9/10
The BBQ has a a lot of different choices and a lot of different sauces for you to try out. The hotpot is also delicious as you can choose what you want. There aren’t a lot of hot foods and they were pretty average. The fruit seemed quite fresh and they often refilled them.
Ambiance: 8/10
There aren’t a lot of decorations but the buffet was organised into sections so you could easily find what you wanted.
It’s a little dark inside making the fires at the grill look more enticing.
I went on Saturday evening with two others.
Food: A great variety - veges, salad material, meat, seafood, chips, eggs, ice cream and pancakes. There are different kinds of marinated meat, they were tasty. I liked the kumara chips.
Ambience: Music is not very loud which I liked, as it is very unpleasant when one needs to shout over music. The place was relatively full though, so I did need to speak loudly sometimes. When walking in, watch for the how-to instructions painted on the walls on the corridor. Informative and cute.
Service: friendly staff. They took away our empty plates relatively quickly.
Tips:
1. Water is self-served - from the fridge located next to the bar.
2. When going for desserts, ask for the pancake first and get the icecream once the pancakes are done. My icecream melted while the pancake was being made.
3. Take a little at a time - less than what you'd normally take for one serving. That way you can try many different dishes and won't be creating food waste (when there are starving children everywhere... including here in NZ). Let's eat everything we bring on the plate.
4. Have fun watching the chefs at the hot grills. And remember where they put your food on the grill. As an aside, I heard that working at that grill is very hard work. I don't know if you can tip them separately? But it's worth a try, it looks really hot there...
All in all, I will definitely be dining here again.
Hidden Jem in Auckland. You must visit this great restaurant. Food is great. All you can eat buffet including BBQ and Steam-boat Hot Pot. Pork BBQ, new steam boat is great. Wonderful interiors.Don't miss this great restaurant.
One hulluva meal for $29! You can fill a bowl (or however many you can manage) with meat/veg/seafood and get it cooked for you, and they have a large selection of steam-boat hot-pot items, and even salads, as well as other ready-cooked food. I would suggest you go for unmarinated meat and veg for the grill, as I find the marinated sorts and sauces a bit on the salty side. I loved their pancakes and ice cream - they make the pancakes for you, on the spot! The food was better than I expected; I had low expectations because the Gengy's that was here previously was bloody awful. The meat and seafood were fresh, and the customer service was surprisingly pleasant. I'm not a huge fan of buffets, but I'd definitely go back and recommend this place to my family and friends.
Service was awesome bartender brought refills of water and brought our ordered drinks to our table , cleared our table when they saw we were mostly finished. Nice staff , good food and definitely a dinner place worth going too.
The previous name of this Restaurant would be "Gengy's". Dont know why its name has been changed.
All you can eat concept with Meat, chick , Seafoods , vegs, noodle. you select them and let the chefs cook for you. Variety of sauces you can choose. Deserts like Ice cream have been provided.
I love the unshelled prawn and fish. I can not find these things in Buffet restaurants nearby.
24.95$ all you can eat is an average price. not too bad to try.
It's sooooo good
There are many kinds of meat, and there are also various salads and hot foods.
The staff are friendly too.
A pancake look like turtle!! It's soooo cute.
I had really nice dinner in The khan.
Great food and a variety of choices. Love the steamboat experience.
Visited again with my wife and kids and enjoyed thoroughly (again). Great food variety (especially for those who like experimenting with different meats, souses and sides), now they added an option of boiling not only frying. Also friendly switched on staff. No wonder they are getting busier. Love it. Will definitely come again.
Awesome concept. Everyone can just choose what they like, so even the most picky eaters can't complain. Seeing the food being cooked in front of us was awesome. Also, the customer service was great, the staff was very helpful and kind. Would definitely return.
I found it was really nice food and cooked on the spot. The staff are friendly and try to help as much as they can. I did find that they are very short on waiters as the plates piled on the table for a bit but they cleaned it up quickly.
I would recommend this restaurant if you want a good amount of meat and sea food mixed with sides.
Thank you guys for the experience.
BBQ better than their hotpot section. Really fresh ingredient! Made for meat lovers
It was a really good and unique food spot. So sad to see it had been closed down.
It was a combo of Chinese hot pot, Mongolian barbeque and Korean barbeque. The food was always fresh and tasty.
Really hope they manage to turn things around and re open, it is such a large venue to go to waste. It was one of my favourite dinner spots in Auckland. 😭😭😭
Very good dining experience with good variety of food. The fact that you can choose your own food and ingredients which they will cook in front of you on the grill is very special and interesting experience for everyone and specially for kids. Clean and tidy, very handy location close to Northcote exit of Nothern Motorway. Being right by the Northcote (Takapuna) Golf Club you can find plenty of free parking during the day and evening, so no problem with parking at all.
Had a family dining actually a few years ago.
Mongolian bbq is exactly how I want my meal served, where I can choose any ingredients with any sort of combination of sauces.
The meat quality is fairly good while the assortment of veges goes well with the meat.
Entree and sweets are ok.
I wished my meal was rare or medium cooked, but the chef wasn't 'obedient' to my request : usually overcooked.
One thing, most of all I wasn't happy about is the selection of in-house music which is too old-fashioned and never the Kiwi favorites.
Recommended to all nevertheless....

New Shabu Shabu section is great. What an amazing change! Can feel these guys are always trying hard to maintain the restaurant at a top level. (7 June)
I love The Khan. Try lamb shoulder and pork belly!! It's amazing. Wow! Getting better and better. (13 Feb)
I want to write how The Khan is getting better than before it was Gengy's Northcote.
its like a 'create your own meal' style buffet where you get your ingredients and they cook it for you. I personally enjoyed it very much and they even have dessert. i would come here again.
Very clean and well spaced out had a lovely experience and the food was so yummy and fresh, the chef cooked the meat so well! will definitely go back thank you 😊
