The food here is unique and still a nice tasty feed. We got the satay skewers which were a good break from the usual satay chicken we get from other restaurants, a nice balance of charred chicken with a satay sauce to go with it. We also got the coconut rice which was a new taste for us. The Malaysian Fried Fish could have more fish I reckon for the price as I felt it was a little short of the amount. The fish is tasty and unique although I felt this could have a complimentary sauce or dip on the side. The eggplant sambal was excellent! The only downside to today's experience was the service. The restaurant needs a floor manager to take the lead in ensuring food comes out efficiently, as we did wait for a fair bit. All in all really hoping this business takes it to a new level and could be what Panmure needs to revive the food scene here. (didn't get to take the other food pics as we were really hungry)
Update: Hi Team, yep we did get the large portion for the fish, we ordered two actually as it was very well cooked! Our first order only got 3 pieces, it felt like it wasn't a shared dish at this stage so we had to cut it up. Very kind with the sauce name recommendation! Will definitely come back to check :) wishing you guys all the best! Time to get the customers that are coming for peaches chicken to come to Bakar instead. Salamat!
Excellent service, one person (order taker) really kind, dedicated and hard working serving everyone in the restaurant.
Food was really nice a bit spicy but depends on what you order.
Thanks Cheff Joe, will visit again.
Delicious Malaysian/Indian flavours in the heart of Panmure. Always a joy to see the lovely smiles of Chef Joe and his wife.
Warm and friendly service in the restaurant and very in touch with the communtiy.
Their menus are constantly changing so there is always new surprises every time you visit.
Thank you to the staff at Bakar for always welcoming everyone with great service and bringing amazing flavours of South East Asia!
Updated June 2023 - They changed hand, it is no longer cook by the same Chef (the restaurant's name is misleading!?). The tastes are completely different. I ordered sambal and curry, both of them are a little bit bitter. The satay chicken is too sweet.

I was their customer since they opened in Auckland Night maket. I'm so glad they are now have their own restaurant. There are more options than night market. Very friendly owner and very tasty food
Ordered 4 dishes for 2 adult and 1 child. It is too much but we could not resist ourselves after reading the menu. Foods are nice, authentic and reasonably priced. Will come back again to try for other dishes.
For Saturday brunch, we had Nasi Lemak with Beef Rendang, Masala Thosai, Murtabak, Teh Tarik, and Kopi Tarik. It was amazing! They have karaoke machine for karaoke night. Chef Joe play my favourite Malaysian music by Man Bai ❤️ The place is near by the Panmure train & bus station, but the Eastern line train is close for maintenance. Will come again to try other food with my friends 👍
We ordered the Beef Rendang, Squid Curry, and Nasi Ganja (rice).
A lot is said about their beef rendang, and it was definitely tasty. However, we were more surprised at how good their squid curry was. More should be done to advertise this too. Amazing.
Would recommend anyone to go here if you want to try Malaysian food, or for Malaysian's who are missing home, craving a good curry or rendang!
Authentic flavours.Charcoal sambal squid is a plus. Staff is very friendly. Overall enjoyable dining experience. Highly recommended!
Came here for lunch over the long weekend. Tried the coffee and tea combo with condensed milk which was so yummy. The chicken satay was good especially the sauce with it. The fish curry and the beef rendang were so yummy. Definitely get the coconut rice and anchovy sambal. I also got the fried fish which was nice but I wanted it more spicy. If you haven’t been here do so the couple that runs it are so passionate about the food and really value every person that walks through the door
Enjoyed the food here, was good to book ahead. The goat curry and chicken abalone were the highlight of the night. Fish curry seemed under cooked and good over all was quite oily which they can work on. But great addition to Panmure's dining scene.
