Great food and impressive service. I had phoned a few days earlier to ask if they were open on Sunday's as the web sites don't mention Sundays. Yes they are open, so I advised them that a bus load of us would be stopping there for morning tea at about 9.00am. On arrival we found they had reserved tables for us, the food cabinet full of temptations and we were all served promptly. Just one small thing, the coffee was great but could have been hotter. Well done to management and staff.

Great food and service. I ordered a breakfast while my friend ordered an omelette and it was the best breakfast and omlette we've ever ate. The food was fresh and cooked really well. It was not over cooked nor did the food looked like it's been kept for a long time.
One thing which we were let down was the drinks ..
The ice chocolate could do some improvements. Putting a lump of icecream into a hot chocolate was a bit disappointment compared to other cafe which had an overall presentation.
The ice chocolate didn't taste nice either

Great food and service. Lovely choices on the menu, and good coffee. Maybe a little more attention could be paid to clearing tables promptly. Otherwise very good.

The Fat Pigeon has to be one of the best places I have ever eaten at. The service is fast and friendly, the food to die for.
As a local I take all of my out of town visitors there to dine or just have coffee, which is excellent. Thanks TFP

I don't usually rate a cafe on the basis of two coffees, a scone and a muffin! However, I must say that the coffee was first class and the two mentioned food items were exceptional and exceptionally presented. Well done. A smile at the counter would have scored five stars. :)

We called into the Fat Pigeon Cafe on our way North, as apart from needing a good coffee, the place looked attractive from the road and busy....always a good sign. We loved our coffees and the muffin and savoury scone were to die for. On top of this really important stuff the cafe also proved to be very honest and efficient. Silly me, I left my laptop (they have free wi fi), would you believe it, on the table and didn't realise I'd done this until we were nearly at Auckland. I phoned them straight away, they were prompt, polite and patient, and we organised a courier delivery. Thanks Fat Pigeon. I'll be spreading the word.

Just after Christmas we went through Piopio and stopped at the Fat Pigeon. The queues looked daunting, but they seemed to be moving so we waited. We got our order, and were shown to a table. My husband began clearing it as they were very busy but a very pleasant young woman came along immediately and cleaned it. I had not ordered a coffee as I like it with my meal and thought the queues would make that unlikely. However we got our meals amazingly quickly (and they were beautiful) so I went back up – fewer people by then – and ordered a coffee which came very soon after.

We were so impressed. Considering the crowds we thought Piopio’s café compared VERY favourably with the one we stopped at not long ago which had been voted best in the country a couple of years ago, and where we were given the wrong food at first. The Fat Pigeon was excellent, thank you.

It's interesting reading these comments that there seems to be no middle ground with it! The food wasn't expensive for what we got - just middle-of-the-road prices. Lovely food.

My husband and I eat and/or have coffee at The Fat Pigeon every weekend; we think they do a fabulous job. There are times when they are overwhelmed by the sheer volume of customers on holidays or weekends, but the cafe has been a great benefit to Piopio and the food is very good, baking superb.

This is our local and have always had wonderful food, coffee and service. They are especially child friendly with child friendly food, baby changing facilities, toys and a playground and park just across the footbridge. A great stop for a snack, meal or just a coffee :)

we had our first stop at the fat pigeon cafe last weekend, and were impressed with the foods and the coffee, well done!
would like to have seen a nice fat pigeon photo on the wall rather than European canal scenes and sparrows.

Fabulous large spacious dining areas inside and out. Staff friendly, efficient. Fabulous cabinets full of food but not much vegan and gluten free to choose from ... Also bits and pieces of gifts to purchase.

Stop here for lunch. There was an excellent cabinet food and menu. It was a beautiful day to sit in the outside area. Definitely would stop here again when I'm next in the area

Stopped off at Fat Pigeon Café on my way from New Plymouth to Waitomo. What a lovely place to stop for some kai and kāwhe. Place was packed, atmosphere alive with intense conversations and the consumption of kai and kāwhe. I got the open steak sandwich & fries, berry smoothie, and a cappuccino. Everything was absolutely perfect. Service was excellent throughout. Highly recommend you stopping in if in the Te Kuiti - Waitomo area or passing thru PioPio

Stopped here for lunch on the way between Hamilton and New Plymouth. Very busy at the time (it was school holidays). Great selection of food and beverages, either from the counter or the blackboard menu. They also have gifts and other food items for sale too. A small bridge takes you over to a lovely playground too. Great for families. Nice clean toilets too (x3). Plenty of parking, too. Would definitely recommend making it a place to stop at on a road trip if it's around food time!

So yes I didn't to have something to eat so we stopped at the Fat Pigeon on the way back to Auckland, Lots of parking area outside ,busy place but the food was good and ice coffee was great and my cheese and meat pie was yummy. Lovely and clean place to stop and the bathroom 🚻 were very nice and clean and tidy and the staff were very friendly and helpful so yes next time we are going to new Plymouth that will be the place to stop and have a beautiful coffee and some yummy Scones or something else to eat .A very nice place to go too and have a few minutes off the road before heading back on the Road. Thanks fat Pigeon.

This is a must stop cafe heading North or South on SH3. There is a wonderful cabinet selection. The coffee (Long Black) is good - not quite great. Toilets are clean and well maintained. Consistently good service and food in the years I have been stopping here.

We popped in on our way back to Auckland and loved this cafe. It was very busy but staff were so calm and helpful. My order had accidentally been missed, but it was so worth the wait (Toasted Reuben) and they even offered a free drink. The macadamia brittle is INCREDIBLE!!!!!!! Great food with excellent staff Thanks guys

Nice busy little place, mince and cheese pies at $9.50 we thought was expensive but came with salad and a drizzle of dressing which my son was not happy about with the dressing over his pie in places. Coffee was nuclear hot which was just as well as there was a long pause between coffee and food and I prefer the two together when eating a dessert

Stopped at the Fat pigeon twice when travelling from Auckland. The food was great each time, my son loves the curly fries. The staff are always friendly and welcoming. Added benefit being pet friendly if seated outside, which is always a winner in my eyes.

Awesome cabinet options. Serving on the small side. Service was good, given the fact that it was crowded.

This is a great place to stop to break up the trip. Nice cafe with a great atmosphere. Good cabinet food selection with menu options too. Everyone enjoyed their meals, my roast vege salad & chai were delicious. Added bonus of playground next door for the kids. Only complaint was not quite enough seating! Was a chilly day & we had to sit outside, but I guess that proves how popular this place is.
