Quite a small place with limited seating that’s isn’t very flexible on their menu options. If you can over come all that not a bad place to eat some Japanese food
Had the salmon rice bowl for lunch that came with a Miso soup starter. Was awesome. Thanks would highly recommend this place (I found it by trip advisor and was not disappointed)
The food here was great! I ordered the gyudon and it was super tender. Some things they could improve is making is adding more flavour. The portions are also quite small so don't be surprised. Overall, would definetely recommend!
This small establishment is tucked in a secluded corner and could be easily missed but despite that they seem to be busy early into service. Food we had were all absolutely delicious. Definitely recommended if craving for Japanese in Queenstown.
AMAZING! We had the scallops with wasabi mayo, the seared rib eye, the gyoza and the tonkatsu. The scallops were the best I have ever had and the wasabi mayo was top notch! This was closely followed by the rib eye. All around a fantastic meal. Will definately visit again when in Queenstown

Nice little place and friendly staff. Food was really nice must try dumplings , ramen and steak .... small servings but the price was worth it cos it was really delicious . Plating and garnish were great .
Our tour guide recomended us this place and we never thought it could be that good. Everything we ordered was very delicious. We sat on the bar, if you want a table better to make a reservation. We paid 25 NZD each.
One of the best japanese cuisine in new zealand !! I ordered gyu tataki with udon and salmon aburi
It was really good !!!! And the sake was very soft and easy to drink
We went there for the ramen but they didn’t have any ramen on the menu that night. The menu selection isn’t a lot but at least food is good. My favourite is the tempura chicken and miso soup. Cabbage salad is raw but tasty.

Need some soup and hot warm food in this winter. Ended here to try their famous tan tan men. It’s delicious and comforter food for winter time. Their sashimi really fresh as well
Perfect
Ordered shouyu ramen & tonkatsu teishoku
Latter was very simple unlike my expectations but still tasted amazing
Ramen too was sumptuous.
Where to begin with this restaurant. Me and my partner came in with no booking hoping to get a table. Luckily, they could spare a rable for an hour. Plenty of time. Staff were very accommodating throughout our meal. We ordered the seared beef tataki, pork gyoza, seaweed salad, sashimi, and the okonomiyaki. Every single dish was amazing. Bursting with flavour and looked great. The only complaint is that the servings need to be bigger. But we were very satisfied with this establishment. Can't praise this place enough. Would definitely return on our next trip to Queenstown.
Delicious and fantastic service! Scallops and fried chicken were our favourites. Sashimi tasted super fresh! Our favourite Japanese in Queenstown!
Amazing food - everything is delicious and very friendly service! Love the ginger tofu, tempura veggies and the Japanese pancake is a must! I keep coming back for more and it gets better every time!
So happy to have stumbled upon this Japanese gem! The garlic soy chicken tempura was definitely the highlight, closely followed by the Japanese pancake. Friendly service and delicious food!
So happy to find this place as we craved for some japanese. Cost nzd20 to nzd50 per person depends on wheather u order any alcohol. Salmon aburi is a must, they also have ramen for winter lunch menu which was nice, tori ten don was also tender and well seasoned. Lovely little space near the cow restaurant.
Awesome, authentic Japanese food - served tapas style so you can share lots of different dishes. They were all delicious. The service was amazing and the fit out is incredible. We'll definitely be back.. again and again!
This is such a cute place to eat, wonderful service, and fabulous food, went with well travelled friends the last visit and they said food was right up there with the best in Japan. The pork dumplings were so good we had to order a second dish, everything on the menu is beautifully cooked and presented. On a cold winters night it is cosy and comfy a great place to relax and enjoy great food.
This awesome Japanese restaurant is tucked away in the alleyways of Queenstown. Great atmosphere and excellent attentive staff. Most importantly the food and sake choice is excellent. There's also delicious Asahi beer on tap and you have to try the prawn pancakes. Enjoy!
Stumbled upon this new cute Japanese sake bar by chance one night - what luck! Great interior/vibe and the food and drinks were delicious. Get the gyoza. Will return!
We came about this place when looking for a new place to eat a light lunch.
Tucked in Cow Lane, we found out that the place had only been opened for 2 months.
The service and food was great, and the place seemed like a small izakaya with the paint still smelling fresh off the interior.
We ordered the curry, Japanese taco (different but very nice!,) tonkatsu and chicken tempura and they were all good.
The chef popped out to see us after and it turns out that he used to chef and host at Daruma, down the road and decided to open up a place here.
I'd love to check out this place for the dinner menu, so hopefully next year I'll be able to visit again.
We tried Tanoshi’s trust the chef, which I thought was a good variety and value for money. The only thing is it doesn’t include desserts. They also have some refreshing Japanese beer on tap. I like that they accept walk-ins. We sat outside at night in August and they have good heating.
The food was SO good! We had a table of five and booked the ‘Trust the Chef’ and it was a great selection and very good value. Two of us has the sake taster and it was taaaasty. The only reason I left 4 for atmosphere was cause there was some rude loud drunk people near us but that’s not really the restaurants fault. Really loved it and kind staff ☺️😍
Good Ramen spot in Queenstown especially on a cold, rainy day. Service was fast and friendly. Very customer oriented staff too. They patiently explain how to order for first timers, and keep smiling even if they're really busy as customers keep coming!
A friendly welcome as you enter the door as is the traditional Japanese way. Professional and friendly staff top off quality food. Highly recommended and will be back again when in Queenstown.
Its my second time dining at Tanoshi. Staff were very friendly. We were lucky to get discount on our sake and the guy who served us let us try the sake before ordering it. Food was amazingly yum! Its a bit pricy but worth it i’ll say. Definitely coming back.
Visiting Queenstown from Sydney, this small japanese restaurant was a wonderful first meal in town! Had "trust the chef" had all the best dishes of the restaurant at great value, will definitely visit again when we are back in town.
Excellent Japanese food in the heart of Queenstown. We ordered the "trust the chef" menu and the food was just fantastic. From the ribeye tataki to the grilled scallops with wasabi mayo, everything was fresh and well seasoned. The okonomiyaki and pork gyozas are also worth mentioning as extras to order. Take note these are tapas sized servings, so even with the tasting menu, it's a good idea to order some extra dishes.
Trust the ‘Trust the Chef’ option, you won’t go wrong. Best beef tataki we’ve ever had, and the chicken tempura was incredible. The scallops, amazing!
I had to run straight back to my hotel to write them an excellent review. The food was outstanding. Highly recommend the chefs choice menu. Such a good value. Best meal I’ve had in Queenstown.
Really nice experience! Awesome food, excellent service, not shy to say that it was our best dinner experience in New Zealand. I would definitely recommend the chef's choice, and it renewed my love for sake!
