First time trying crayfish and I love it! It was really meaty, seasoned well and I really enjoyed the truffle fries as well. Staff are super lovely too!
I had dinner here and found the service was very friendly. The waitress was lovely at entertaining us and talking to us. The food took awhile to come out, which was slightly disappointing but worth the wait. I got the venison cooked rare and I really enjoyed the dish.
The venison itself was tender and had a nice flavour to it. The fig sauce and the beetroot added a bit of sourness to the dish, which I really loved as it added an unique flavour to it. The mashed potato with peas on top and truffle was buttery and delicious, it literally melts in your mouth and the pea added a bit of sweetness to the potato. It is a beautiful dish and I highly recommend it.
Stumbled upon this cozy restaurant while walking around the little streets of queenstown . The "famous captain's chowder" is indeed famous from reading the reviews, and it sure didn't disappoint, in fact i just couldnt help but come back for more just before i had to fly back home. I've tasted a fair amount of seafood chowders and i must say that this is the best one yet. The chowder had ample amount of seafood and was very rich and creamy yet not at all off-putting after having a few spoonfuls.👌 Also tried the prawn tagliatelle which was superb, having it tossed in a crayfish bisque made it extra special. In my thoughts one of the best, if not, the best as well. Lamb rack and Slow-cooked pork ribs were also very good.
Service was excellent both times we visited. We asked to be seated outside despite the freezing weather to enjoy the queenstown night vibe, they didnt fall short of ensuring we're nice and comfortable by offering us blankets and checking every once in a while if we are okay.
Dined at Captains Restaurant twice - loving the Captains seafood chowder. Unforgettable. The lamb rack was also a highlight - soft and juicy. Both touristy atmospheric outdoor and cosy indoor dining were enjoyable. Staff were very friendly, provided us blankets while we dined outside admiring the view.

Warm atmosphere. The service was very welcoming and friendly. We ordered the scallops, fish of the day and venison. The foods were all delicious, especially the medium-rare venison was beautifully done! Overall a very enjoyable experience.
One of the restaurants that stands out along mall street with a relatively large outdoor seating.
Ordered the pan-seared scallops, NZ green-lipped mussels, and ribeye steak.
The scallops came in three portions, nice sear, firm texture, great taste combined with the other ingredients, the small piece of crispy prosciutto was a delight to this dish.
The green-lipped mussel size is larger than a regular mussel, serving portion was good, and comes with two thick slices of toasted ciabatta. If you love seafood, get this.
The ribeye steak was very nicely seared, even finished off with what looks like aromatic garlic butter on the steak, served with a choice of sauce and a pinch of caramelized onions on the side. Safe to say this is one of the best steaks in town, tender and cooked evenly throughout, that aromatic finisher on top of the steak probably contributed the difference in flavour, no sauce needed.
For the quality of food this restaurant is surprisingly quite and empty, the pricing is reasonable as well, we had seafood platter which is very nice, and we had some of the best oysters we ever had, it's these special ones you can only get in New Zealand apparently, very sweet and juicy. Would recommend.
A cost place, nice environment. Good range of breakfast and lunch options both available. Great mocha and mushrooms. Had the seafood chowder and big breakfast.
This place is a bit underrated - the food is beautiful, but didn't get as much attention as other diners in queenstown central thus no queue. I highly recommend the seafood chowder and seafood platter.
A very nice fine dining restaurant with a hint of the newzealander touch in the dishes offered. Entirely loved my dining experience.
Everything is on point - Ambience, environment,Taste of the dishes, presentation, cleanliness in the place, portion sizes, very patient and helpful restaurant staff and what not.One word to describe this place would be A LITTLE WONDER😊👍😋
Would definitely recommend this place.
Food: 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5
We ordered the seafood platter for 2 and it did not disappoint. The prawns and crayfish in particular were very juicy and enjoyable. We left feeling very full and satisfied with our meal.
Service: 🌟🌟🌟🌟.5
Captains Restaurant is popular therefore it would be recommended that you book beforehand. The staff were friendly when explaining the menu to us and we did not have to wait long the food to arrive.
Price: 🌟🌟🌟🌟
Fairly reasonable for the quality of the seafood served. It was an easier option for us who wanted to try a variety of NZs seafood.
Captain's another seafood dinner....
Fresh oyster from the local sea. So fresh and so juicy and so tender.
Scallop with prosciutto cooked just right.
The seafood chowder that is loaded with tons of seafood.
Lamb rack that is souvide and then roasted to medium rare. NZ lamb is indeed soooo tender.
And lastly our first try in Elephant fish, a firm fish with a mild taste.

Food is great, care and attention seems to have taken to small details in putting the dishes together. Staff are friendly and good with children.
Very nice!
We had the lamb shanks and pork belly which was yummy, unfortunately the crackling was way to hard to eat, we then had the crumble and brownie for dessert which were amazing! The staff were very friendly especially the male waiter, overall a great experience!
Had the seafood chowder for my lunch, which was so creamy and smoothy, tasted delicious!
My friends had the prawn & chorizo pasta and the green lipped mussels, all the seafood was fresh and tasty.
However, the only one disappointing thing was the food came out slowly.
We had heard about the green lipped mussels in new Zealand. It was one of the dishes on our checklist and we were not disappointed.
We entered captains and they greeted us well.
We ordered for the green lipped mussels and they were delicious. They were cooked in a white creamy sauce and we're perfect. They were tender and we relished each one of them.
The service was also good and decor was great with the right lights and antiques on the wall
Overall nothing is better than captains green lipped mussels
Great bacon and egg rolls. Coffee very tasty. Sat outside in the mall, inside looked the place to be, warm and cosy, open fire, if it was cold.
Staff have extraordinary sense of humor. We ordered, Blue Cheese Salad, Classic Prawns Cocktail, Lamb Rack, NY cheesecake, Affrogo ... omg magnificent. Speechless
Really enjoyed our dinner at Captains. We were a group of 7, so we ordered a variety of food. The calamari entree was amazing, I had the lamb shank which was beautiful and our desserts were great too. Service wasn't perfect, the guy serving us seemed to be inconvenienced by us (and we weren't a high maintenance table) but nevertheless, I would go back and I would recommend. Queenstown isn't short of amazing places to eat, but this is well worth your time.
Dined for lunch here today with the whole family and we all enjoyed our meals. Staff were absolutely friendly. I had the Sea-Run Stewart Island Salmon, and it was cooked to perfection. It was moist and the skin was nice and crispy. My sister had the ribs & it was well cooked and well seasoned. My parents loved their meals as well.
Five star flawless! Amazing food. Probably the best steak my partner and I have ever had and the cheesecake is to die for. Highly highly recommend
Succulent meat.... A special place with equally good seating both inside and out. The feel inside is warm and inviting while outside you have the vibe of the street and are provided with blankets if it's chilly. The menu is true quality with so many options making it hard to choose. I opted for the lamb rack and it was cooked to perfection. Served with green bens and chat potatoes it really was a good meal. The rack was of good size (5 ribs wide) and the sauce added to the deliciousness. Service is reasonably sharp too. Prices are on the upper end but that's what you expect in Queenstown's better restaurants. I wouldn't mind heading back again...
If you are looking for a candle-lit dinner, tucked away from the rest of the world accompanied with great food and a fantastic selection of wines.. 'Captains' the place to be at! Although situated right in the city centre, it is as private and cosy as can be. The food gives the word 'delicious' an entirely new meaning. Large portions and very well priced - this little restaurant gives you your money's worth. To top it off, the friendly staff cater well to your needs! Definitely a restaurant to check out while at beautiful Queenstown! The spare ribs are not to be missed!
5 star dining!! Could not find a fault with this joint. Wanted to end our holiday off with a bang, so we ordered the whole karitane crayfish with 2 sides all for $49!! Awesome price and great flavours. Our meals came out very quick considering how busy it was. Staff friendly and attentive. What more can you ask for? A must if your in Queenstown
Wow. This restaurant is well deserving of a 5 star rating. From the moment we arrived we felt welcomed and well looked after by cheerful, friendly staff. For our last day of holiday we wanted to treat ourselves to a crayfish and were excited when we found the karitane whole cray with two sides for $49.00. Crayfish was cooked to perfection. We also had two entrées, mussels in a creamy tomato sauce and a lovely tomato bruschetta. If you're in queenstown don't miss this gem!
So good we had dinner here twice during our 3-day stay in Queenstown. Fabulous food, beautifully cooked and presented and excellent service. Thank you.
we went there for the winter festival and it was great! I loved that you can plan your own little food composition and the crayfish and venison we had were just delicious. Accompanied by beautiful wine and excellent service it was a really pleasant evening hopefully to be repeated soon
Went for breakfast on a freezing day and even tho it was packed we got great service and FANTASTIC food and service!
Beautiful food! Great recommendation on portions. We walked in Without reservations but managed to be arranged to share table with another couple. Seafood platter has everything to try and taste great! Cary fish is done tender but chewy. Oysters are fresh. Prawn has cooked with an unique chili sauce, Absolutely Love it! The champagne recommended is also just nice. Professional but friendly services. Strongly recommended!
This is my favourite store. I will book seats every time I come. Seafood is delicious. The portion is very large. The waiter is very enthusiastic. The environment is very good.
This place is absolutely outstanding.
After being turned away by many places, being tourists and not realising you need to make bookings, we went for a walk looking for a place with availability. Captains was oddly quiet, so they had plenty of space to seat us for the evening. Every staff member went above and beyond, the cocktail list was amazing, the food was delicious. I recommend everyone given it a chance.
Danish apple cake cocktail, was the most delicious cocktail. It was dessert in a cup. 10 out of 10
I'd you're in queenstown, definitely have a meal or a few here.
The atmosphere at Captains was amazing not to mention the crew were fast, super friendly and intelligent. If you’re lucky like me you’ll get Sebastian as your server who ensures all your needs are met timely and also quips his own genuine opinions and is also very knowledgeable of the menu.
Good selection of fish and stake dishes. Our salmon and stake were perfect cooked. TOP notch service. Just one small thing, please use a smaller pinch of salt on the calamari will be perfect ( it’s abit salty on our ).
Lovely atmosphere with the accordion player and the lake near by!
Food was delicious and service was fast and friendly. Hot drinks also very yummy!
Only suggestion is to update your high chairs as they’re a little lacking with safety.
This is our second day in Queenstown , didn't know that it's a public holiday in town, many restaurants were closed . This restaurant is a very popular place here in downtown. The service is really good, staff are friendly and helpful. The food we have ordered are nice and good taste . Steak , lamb and seafood chowder are excellent. A good experience.
Good:
1) excellent service. Kept refilling water without having to ask.
2) Seafood chowder. Every mouthful has some seafood. Served with some toasted bread.
Not so good:
1) portion - small
2) sides, sauces at extra charges.
3) Not value for money.
4) steak, too salty; lamb too mushy.
5) Slow serving on a weekend in Dec.
6) Music too loud.
Conclusion:
Will still go back but won’t eat steak and lamb. Maybe will try something else. There’s something about this place that makes you want to go back and try other food.
We couldn’t find this gem of a restaurant. Their fantastic staff came and found us. We had an amazing meal (crayfish+steak) delicious. So happy with their service and food, we had lunch a few days later. Once again the meal and service was top notch. Would definitely recommend it for lunch or dinner. You won’t be disappointed
What a surprise! We were looking for hot mulled wine all over the place, guess what captain has made our dream come true! Your hot mulled wine is the bomb! So nice to drink this 5c temperature weather! Other good also so delightful! Thank you!
Some of the best table service we had in NZ food was very good aswell
First morning in Queenstown and was treated to a delicious Eggs Benedict Brunch. As someone who loves her pirate/nautical themes, this restaraunt has a great, warm atmosphere and friendly service. The Benny was mouth-watering, and staff dutifully added bacon to my salmon stack (you'd be surprised how many places fail at this request). Not used to a thick, fresh cooked cut of salmon, the whole plate was filling and delicious. I regret not taking a photo of the meal!
Will definitely return for dinner on my next visit!
The rack of lamb was amazing. So tender and filled me up with such joy. The fresh oysters were great as well. So fresh fresh fresh.
Supercharger ales were amazing too.
The restaurant is located in the main street of Queenstown where is the perfect place for preasure dining as all food and service were impressive. The ribeye steak, clam chowder are highly recommended.
Captains was fantastic! I rate the service 5/5, the food maybe 4/5. We did not have a booking and they were fully booked but they let us sit outside with a heater and checked on us very often anyway! The mussels were beautiful and I really enjoyed the fish and surf and turf! Very tasty
The food here is exquisite. Everything is clearly cooked with love. Highly recommend the mushroom and cheese bruschetta to start, chowder is the best in Queenstown, and the garlic prawns were divine. Best food we had in New Zealand! Also great ambiance. Perfect night out.
