Man granola is so tasty and for $12.50 highly recommend. However could potientially have more yoghurt because can be a little dry. Have to ask for milk aswell. However such good staff who are really friendly and the food comes out sooo quick. 9/10
Good food and good service. This trendy cafe doesn’t have the biggest menu but most people should be covered with the options they do have. Worth a visit if your in the area!
Parking is a big problem - never enough spots for cars. Otherwise I really like this spot. Cabinet food selection is really good, the vegan brownie is so good. Coffee is nice. The portions are big and worth the price.
Really delicious food, cleaned my plate completely.. coffee was really good too and staff were super friendly and fast. Location is good and has nice decor! Food looks a bit to pretty to eat but so gooodddd
Update:
Came back to try their cabinet goodies. Can confirm that the chicken and mushroom pie is absolutely delish!! Decided to come here for brunch with my friends as it is a popular hip cafe on the shore.
Presentation of food is AMAZING, very instagramable. Mince on toast was cold when it came out, the only downside to a tasty dish. French toast was amazing, tasted delicious. The wrong breakfast croissant was bought out, but this was promptly fixed by staff who brought out the correct one and left the wrong order for the rest of the table to try. My lemon chicken salad was delicious and packed of different flavours and textures, I loved the wild rice and the dressing. I got a small takeaway latte - all I can say is that for the price is that I’ve had plenty of better coffees for the same price. What I can say is that major Tom is definitely a hip cafe with beautiful presentation. Their cabinet looks amazing so maybe I might be back to try a different item on the menu or one of their goodies in their cabinet.
How can you even get more good looking food than this place. Not only is the food absolutely beautiful and tastes out of this world. I am a sucker to have a good granola for breakfast and felt like ordering another one as the taste is just sensational.
The shelves with ready made goodies feel like you can lose yourself as there are so many beautiful treats to look at. Can't wait to come again and try everything on the menu. Hubby had the big Breakfast and it looked just as amazing and he have it a massive thumbs up!
Looking for a sweet treat? Look no further... Major Tom has a wide range of treats to have anyone frothing at the mouth. The environment, although sometimes quite loud is very fun with beautiful art covering the walls. I know I can always be guaranteed a good time when I go for their vegan brownie!!!

The meal itself from major tom (the egg benedict) was decent but the presentation is what made Major Tom stand out to me. The amount of effort and preciseness put into every aspect of each dish was impressive. The flavor was not out of this world but was still tasty. The broccolini was cooked well and was a great addition to the dish. 10/10 on presentation. I also got a dirty chai with soy to go along with my meal. It was nothing to brag about but was good coffee.
Service is great and te food is very cute here, it could be a bit cheaper for what you pay for but it is also in a convenient location for a quick tea with friends
Taste: 4/5. Environment: 4/5. Service 4/5. Varieties: 3.5/5. Price: 3.5/5. Heard that their donuts are extremely good and sold out very quickly.
Brunch with extended family. The place is packed, luckily we were able to get a table for 10 hungry folks and a kid. Soft shell crab Benedict 4 me, wifeys was major toms big brekkie which was copied by others. Overall, food was yum and the atmosphere was friendly.
Came here during a weekend for a birthday brunch with the family. The food was amazing and completely different to other cafes. Definitely coming back! I suggest you plan the time you go though, as it can be very busy and getting a table can sometimes come down to luck. 100% recommend regardless!!
Wow, first time there, what a find. Food presentation amazing, these guys must be trying to win an award and by the looks of things, and they should win.
Pic of my big breakfast, I had tabasco and Tom Sauce at the ready before it was brought out as is pretty usual for me and bacon and eggs. Seriously would not have spoiled this meal with condiments, it didn’t need a thing. So tasty, so varied, all served very hot.
Wish I had taken pics of the other meals, my wife’s French Toast was amazing in presentation and taste, loved the little slab of glass toffee.
Drinks were great, coffee nice and strong. Service was well above what is expected at a cafe, they were all polite, welcoming and smiling and there were tons of staff so you never waited for a thing. Was busy as clearly the place has been found by others but food and drinks came quickly.
Highly recommended. We will be back.
Well renovated place with a millennial feel to it. Portion sizes were overall pretty generous with the food being yummy as well. Coffees could be a bit stronger but overall a nice cafe to have brunch on a weekend.
My New Go-To!
The cabinet food is incredible at this cafe! A lot of options, both sweet & savoury and everything we ordered was delicious. Will be bringing the family back for sure.
Finally some cool cafes are opening up on the Shore and Major Tom is certainly leading the way. It was packed out when we arrived which is certainly a good sign (even if it was a struggle to get seated).
On the plus side, it’s a cool space, the coffee is great, the menu is filled with some interesting dishes and what we tried from the cabinet (spinach and cheese scone and a lamington) was very tasty.
On the downside, what we did order from the menu, the Shaka Bra salad, was impeccable presented but tasted very average. It came with a mixture of halloumi, beetroot, cranberries, walnuts, quinoa, pumpkin and spinach with a poached egg on top, which should be a winning combination. However, the salad had too many sweet components with nothing to counterbalance the flavour. Also the “grilled” halloumi was kinda slimy and we take our cheese seriously so this was a bit of a disappointment. All in all it was a decent salad but could have been better executed.
I’m not gunna write Major Tom off completely coz they had other delectable-sounding options on their menu but perhaps we’ve just learnt our lesson to never order the salad!
Had beautiful coffee and a lovely welcome from all the well presented food. Awesome coffee and a bright atmosphere within the cafe. They also had cabinet food and desserts to choose from. Very friendly customer service, had allocated parking for the customers. Has inside and outside areas to enjoy the meals. Recommended :)
Major Tom’s hashtag fries are amazing! I’m a total sucker for aioli and they killed it for me. These fries came with my burger and the burger itself is quite good. The staff was friendly and very helpful as it was our first time here.
We ordered the peanut butter & jelly smoothie but there wasn’t anything special about it and for it’s price it could have been bigger but other than that this place is worth checking out!
My new favourite cafe! Food and drink was all amazing!! We had eggs bene and wagyu beef burger, in both the bread was so soft and delicious, great size too
One of the best cafés on the shore! Beautifully presented food and tastes as good as it looks. We ordered the Smoked Chilli Quinoa Omelette and the Smoked Salmon Benedict. These were amazing dishes and were absolutely worth it. I’ve also tried the classic Scrambled Eggs on Sourdough Toast before and they were great too! Their cabinet food and baking is very pretty and very delicious so if you’re a sweet tooth, definitely try their donuts, cakes or slices!
Love this cafe. All the foods are beautiful made. Order 2 drinks, a French toast and a big breakfast. the French toast is a little bit too sweet for me, other then that is perfect!
The best French toast in Auckland hands down!
I’ve had my fair share of French toast around Auckland, and the one here is by far the best I’ve had! The brioche is light and fluffy, but crisp on the outside. There’s a very generous amount of dulce de leche on top with an arrangement of fresh and freeze dried fruits, maple syrup, berry coulli, ice cream and crumble. The cold brew coffee was also pretty good.
Service was attentive but a little awkward, but nothing to be worried about.
I’d happily come back here anytime I wanted a sweet treat😊
Best french toast I’ve ever had and super Insta worthy too! Major Tom is located on the North Shore so we made the trip up and it was worth the drive. The salted caramel hot chocolate was not what I had anticipated but bought it because it looked good! Overall 5 star rating.
I think 5 stars isn't enough to really qualify this restaurant. I'm a real foody and have been to Michellin restaurants...this one is right up there and totally has blown my mind and taste buds twice ...this is an experience and delicious...utterly ...cant wait to go again...faultless ...service is perfect too...the food ...oh wow it will blow you away it's just simply incredible.
Friendly service and warm staff, a pleasure to visit. Food was delicious, presentation was outstanding and at a resonable price too. Will be back again!
Very solid espresso offered is a super casual atmosphere. Swift and friendly service, knowledgeable staff and a pleasure to visit.
A few people working on their laptops, so I assume it's convenient to get some work done while you're sipping on your beverage.
Popped in here on a day off. All the allotted car parks were taken and I had to park across the road (you’re not supposed to park by those shops but I was “hangry” so I just sat facing in that direction so I could look out for tow trucks!) I ordered the Dulce de Leche French toast. Presentation was beautiful, thankfully the taste matched albeit it could’ve done with a bit more syrup. The panacotta was divine. Even though it wasn’t a traditionally busy time of the day it was still relatively busy and VERY noisy. So I was glad I was dining alone otherwise sign language my have been warranted. Service was ok. The coffee was ok too. Not the most relaxing cafe vibe, but the cabinet food warrants a drop in when I’m out here for work at the very least.
Came here for a fathers day brunch, loved the outdoorsy atmosphere and the staff were warm and friendly!. The meals looked more like art than food and they tasted amazing!. Would really recommend the french toast which we ordered seconds for because it was that good!. Price wise its pretty reasonable as well because the serving sizes are huuuge!
Great food and good vibe. I went in here on a gloomy sunday and was really busy. Food is delicious and presentation is outstanding. I had creamy mushrooms which was served with spelt flour pancake and bought a doughnut. Pancake could’ve been on a heavier side if on brunch menu, but definitely coming back for round 2 👍
What a perfect place for a special breakfast 😃 Came here for Father's day, what a treat. It was packed which is a very good sign. The food we ordered were all delicious...I've have tried sister's Winona Forever's French toast this brother's French toast did not disappoint it was soooo good.
Service was excellent, I'm looking forward to my next visit.
Love this cafe. Often come here on the weekend, when we are in the area. The Service is fast and friendly and the presentation is always impressive.
Only didn’t give a 5/5 because it’s a bit noisy and there is no children’s menu, but still well worth the visit.
Brunch for our family of four, with drinks came to $94.
Hands down one of the best places to have breakfast on the shore, friendly staff, reasonably priced delicious food, beautiful plating, very large welcoming space, relatively easy to find on apollo drive, plenty of parking although the place is almost always very busy, very much the place to go on a Saturday or sunday morning

Awesome place for brunch! ,Cabniet is beautiful and tasty, would highly recommend a visit to this gem in Rosedale! Food is great, service is even better! Will be back again!
Favorite brunch spot on the shore! Pretty busy place so you have to wait for a table at peak times, but other than that it's great. Beautiful cabinet display filled with goods too 😍 Would defs recommend the creamy mushrooms and pulled pork eggs bene 👌

A great trendy place, always packed with a waiting line. I would give this place a solid five if the food wasn’t that sweet ty my taste. Crab eggs benny are to die for!
Having heard good things about this eatery on the Shore, I’m pleased to report that I enjoyed my first time dining at Major Tom this morning. The service was fast and friendly, food was tasty, portions were good and their menu featured an interesting Asian fusion twist to traditional breakfast meals.
Normally I would’ve gone with the brioche French toast – but it would’ve been a tad expensive with bacon, so I ordered their big breakfast instead. In addition to beautiful presentation, the dish showcased an impressive variety of food all on one plate. My piece of tender pork belly was fatty in all the right ways, but it was the crunchy pakora fritters that stole the show. Though they could’ve done with a bit more spice, I liked that they complemented the soft texture of the beans and portobello mushrooms – which was cooked with a delightful garlic purée. The lamb and feta sausage was amazing and I was glad to get some greens in the form of broccolini stalks. I was very full by the end of the it; I had to give away some of my mushrooms to Mum, who was also pretty full from her perfectly scrambled eggs on toast.
Special mention goes to the sweet chai latté. With all that gingery Hakanoa goodness, it was super flavourful without being overpowering.
While I made note of a few issues during my dining experience (one waitress had a thick accent which made ordering a little hard, and I spotted a short strand of hair on one of my mushrooms), overall I still rate Major Tom quite highly and would be happy to come back with a bunch of friends.
Popping in at 9am on a Saturday morning, there was ample space inside but we did notice that it got busier towards 10 – and also a little loud if there are a lot of young kids around.
This busy cafe has introduced by my friend and we came here for our weekend brunch, which we all enjoyed so much! Coffee is not the best but they are nice. All food are very tasty and good portions. I especially love my Salad, it comes with a lots things inside and the yoghurt dressing taste so nice. Also the soft shell crab Benedict is highly recommended.
This place has been showing up on my Instagram feed so much, that I knew I had to visit!
It was just as impressive in person - huge glass windows, cute painted artsy walls, with an outdoor seating area.
They were super busy during the lunch hour. Thankfully there were plenty of seating! Staffs were super friendly too.
The cabinet food were drop dead gorgeous. I has a cheese & spinach brioche & cream jam donut; while my friend had the fried prawns and so a salad. Everything was well enjoyed - the crispy prawns were so delicious, especially paired with the sweet chilli sauce that had a real kick to it! I ordered donuts at almost every single cafe I visited, and the cream jam donut here was one of the best I had. The filling and the texture were amazing!
I had the coconut salted caramel slice to go, which was apparently one of their most popular items. It was all sorts of amazing: with different textures and flavours (not overly sweet!) combined in perfect harmony. I could not stop eating it.
To conclude this place is certainly going to become my new favourite spot (since I work close by!), and I cannot wait to come back and try their menu items :)
Such a good brunch! I had their Shaka Brah Salad with beetroot, pumpkin, haloumi and quinoa and it was so delicious. Also loved their salted caramel hot chocolate.
Cabinet cakes to die for! Love the coffee and walnut and the banana cake. Very fresh. Fab coffee and chai and had a beetroot salad with spinach and a poached egg that was huge in size and very tasty. Not much in the way of a view due to location so somewhere you would pop to for a good meal only rather than a nice walk or near a beach on the shore.
I went on a Sunday around 12:30pm and was pleasantly surprised it was not very busy. We chose a table outside and were offered blankets which was a nice touch and the interior decor is very nice. It does seem to get quite noisy inside (even when not very busy) which I’m assuming is just due to the layout. Overall ambiance gets a 4/5.
We ordered the Shaka Brah Salad ($19.5) and the Slow Cooked Bolognese on Toast ($19.5) and they were both delicious - perfect serving size and incredibly delicious. Overall food gets a 5/5.
Only downside was there was only 1-2 savoury options in the cabinet which was disappointing.
Would definitely go back again.
Have been here for several times. Great coffee.friendly staffs. love the cabinet foods. Nice and valued.but really not recommend French toast cus it was too sweetttttt. however it’s very good a looking.
Finally was able to try out this local cafe on the weekend. This place was buzzing, managed to find a seat for 2 and ordered their famous french toast, big breakfast and their mocha. Mocha was alright, not the best I've had but the food were definitely pretty! Big breakfast was good, scrambled eggs were yum, came with pork belly, sausages, mushrooms, broccolini on a piece of bread. French toast was yum too but it was too sweet for me after a few bites, so it's best for sharing if you're not a sweet tooth. Service was friendly and take note on the weekends you might have to wait more than 20mins for food.
Came here about a month ago for lunch with my little sister. I had the Bircher and she had the French toast, both beautifully presented and delicious!! I really felt like some good Bircher and it ticked all the boxes whilst also being very filling! Only negative would be that my sister and I were clearly not prioritised as customers (probably due to being young) so we had to wait outside for a good table. Not a biggie though! Would deff come back!!
Nice place with a lot of sun. They have a few interesting twists on the usual breakfast menu items. - good size dishes, it can get quite busy at times during the weekends. Staff are friendly an were helpful in explaining the dishes.
Came here for lunch on a week day which was sweet as the place wasn’t busy and plenty of parking outside, a bonus. Ambiance is ok very simple, the staff were great super friendly and attentive! The food however was average we ordered mushroom crepe, pulled pork Benny, chai and matcha latte. Plates were well presented as you can see very pretty indeed! But flavours were average and their drinks were average too I’ve had better chai from other cafes. Pricing was on par with other hip cafe our meals were about $20 each plus drinks $5 definitely not a cheap eat!!Overall it’s a nice place to hang and chill lots of space and fresh air, would like to try their cabinet food as it’s much cheaper.
Major Tom’s is a new hip cafe in Albany. The interior decor is arty and modern. We came here for a girlfriends birthday. On arrival, we requested a table of six & were seated promptly. The wait staff were friendly. Food arrived quickly.
I shared the pork egg’s benny and creamy mushrooms with the birthday girl. Oh my LORDY, those creamy mushrooms are delicious. The spinach crepe is the perfect partner to the mouthwatering mushrooms. Pulled pork egg’s benedict was nice but not mind-blowing. Brioche was a bit too much for me.
Overall, Major Tom’s has an awesome vibe and is a cafe I would come back to from time to time. The girls were happy with their meals and the service. 4.5/10 for us!
I went here a few weeks ago and trust me it's totally worth a try. Fortunately, I didn't have to wait for a table as I got there quite early (around 12 pm), but I have heard of people having to wait upwards of half an hour just to be seated.
This cafe has a super cool vibe to it - very artsy and bright. The service is wonderful; staff are lovely and very accommodating.
I ordered the 'Dulce De Leche French Toast' which was both delicious and beautiful; it was probably the best french toast I've ever had.
I highly recommend visiting Major Tom; in my opinion, it is one of the best cafes on the Shore.
A very busy place sometimes it's too noisy with the metal chairs scratching the concrete floor when people moving around. Their service is spot on. I was very impressed that they do listen to your feedback. Overall, Good restaurant but with a few flaws.
The best scrambled eggs I've ever had and really great service: excellent hungover brunch place yes had the green tea latte creamy and could be a lil sweeter
Popped in for brunch on a Saturday morning. Seated immediately and 3 different waitresses made sure we had ordered drinks then if we'd ordered food. Very on to it. Menu was varied and pleasing to see the amount of quality ingredients making a basic dish into something special. I had a spelt crepe, packed to the brim with creamy mushrooms, poached egg, lovely toasted hazelnuts and micro greens. First time I haven't finished a meal. Partner had to finish the rest and he reckons men will love the big portions here. A new favourite. Well done Major Tom. Only suggestion is to cover the baked goods at head height. .. too close to customers breathing/sneezing on them.
Big portions/ Nice Atmosphere/ Carpark available/ 15mins Wait at the weekend / Plate of art
We were just here today. 15 mins wait as the place quite busy at the weekend however the staff nicely informed us so we’re happy to wait. There’s a few carparks right in front or you can park off streets and walk about 2 mins. We had the creamy mushroom wrap in crepe and top with poached egg; Beautiful French toast with panna cotta * totally recommended **and Fried fish with Kale. The food was very tasty, awesome presentation. The portion was also very generous. And you know I always judge the coffee, this place did not let me down.
Since we can’t do a 4.5 and it will be unfair to give this place a 4 so here we go a perfect 5.
Been here twice now and had a great experience with Major Tom both times!
The staff are super friendly and attentive, they made sure everything was all good.
The food is great and the ambience was very nice and lovely artwork ☺️
Only downside is their cabinet food is slightly stale but still delish.
It was my second time here, after the first opening and it was FULL of people. We waited in line to get seated and when our food came out, we knew what the hype was for! The French Toast was a beaut, it was full of colors: dried boysenberries, honey dunked peaches, blueberries and kiwifruits. The caramel cream was on point, and the overall balance between sweetness and the saltiness of the bacon was perfect. The toast could have been a little bit more moist, it was more sugary than syrupy (if you know what I mean!). Coffee was great, and staff was so welcoming. The salad looked great too but I didn’t try it. Will definitely visit again :)
Went here for lunch today Food is amazing the food has great flavour and also the presentation is spot on and also the feel of the place is dope as in all the decor brings the place together would recommend only bad thing was we had to wait about 30 mins because the place was really busy but we were informed about this before we were seated and we were fine with waiting.
Major Tom definitely calls out to all you foodies with it’s immaculate plating and ambience. The service is quite prompt even on a busy day. I’d give them a 5 star rating if it wasn’t for the taste of the food. Something that aces in presentation and use of ingredients like soft shell crab and prosciutto , definitely takes a back seat in terms of blending the flavors together. Both the dishes had good flavors on the plate but too salty when had as a whole. Otherwise a very good place to hang out on a sunny day.
Back again. Nice friendly staff. Busy, but the long queues soon after they opened seem to be less prolific. And the food is coming out a lot faster. Nice work Major Tom.
Had the French Toast again. Quite an impressive combination of fruits, textures, sweetness, etc. But do wish they could get the proportions a bit more balanced.
They give you a single inch-and-bit-thick of toast - which you can barely see in the photo, as it’s covered with other stuff. And that’s the issue - it’s hard to eat without it being effectively a dessert with some bread. And you end up having very little toast left by the end of the dish, so start chowing down de Luce and marscapone straight. And the french toast, as thick as it was, doesn’t soak up enough egg mix - was just bread inside.
Major Tom - Keep the general makeup of the dish, but how about putting two thinner slices of bread on the plate. Stack them if you want to keep the same visuals. But make it easier to have egg soaked french toast and nice condiments, with a balanced taste.
We came for a late Sunday lunch around 2:30pm. Because it was so popular there was a 30 minute wait for anything ordered from the kitchen, which was the perfect amount of time to enjoy a coffee. We ordered the bruschetta and the big breakfast. The Kumara sourdough bruschetta was delicious and chewy with a generous amount of creamy feta. And piled with fresh tomatoes and prosciutto. And a poached egg on the side. Can't wait to come back and try some other dishes.
We came here for a late lunch around 1:30. After hearing that Winona Forever had a sister cafe we had to try this place.
We ordered the Dulce de Leche French toast with bacon and the Soft shell crab eggs bene.
The French toast was a beautiful thick soft toast paired with a Dulce de leche panda cotta and seasonal fruits. It looked beautiful, tasted delicious and was filling too.
The eggs bene was definitely not your average bene, the broccolini was beautifully seasoned and the dish had a hint of spice which really lifted he flavours.
The juices weren’t to our taste but the flavour combinations were definitely interesting.
Love love love! the most interesting breakfast I've ever had. The French toast is a killer! Friendly staff. The only thing is not too keen on the bitter coffee. But omg the food!
Major Tom is quite new to AKL food scene, but has gathered a lot of attention thanks to its sister, Winona Forever. Checked out this place on Sunday for lunch service with a few friends.
Ambience: Busy Busy Busy. Very big open space with many seatings. Tons of light. Big wall decorated with fun ocean-theme painting. Cabinet looks amazing and has so many selections.
Service: Waited more than an hour for food because someone forgot to put the order through I guessed. When pointed out, they constantly apologised and didn’t make us pay for our drinks. They also offered us free food from the counter cabinet.
Food: We ordered Creamy Mushroom, Lemon Chicken on Wild rice, Pulled Pork on Brioche and Heirloom Tomato on Toast. My creamy mushroom was delicious, although a little bit too oily. I loved the spinach crepe wrapping the mushroom. I ordered extra Salmon and it was great, love the infusion of beetroot. I also got to try the lemon chicken rice and it was super tasty. All my friends seemed to love their dishes.
Overall, definitely coming back. Even thought we waited very long time, the way manager and staff handled it were very professional, we were all impressed! 💗 highly recommended Major Tom :)
When the interior is as good as their food, you’re in the right place. Tried this new cafe in Albany for a Saturday brunch with my friends and it was a surprise to see people filling the cafe even before 10am! Everything is so good!
My wife and I heard about Major Tom opening up the weekend we went, so we knew precisely what we'd be having for breakfast to kick off the long weekend!
To have an awesome café this close by to us means we won't always have to travel to the city to get some awesome, quality bites!
She ordered the dulce de leche French toast, which came with fresh fruit and the most delicious - and not overly sweet - dulce de leche panna cotta. It was absolute perfection. For her to say 10/10 is remarkable considering how picky she is! Whilst I enjoyed trying hers, I saw the soft shell crab eggs benedict, which was served on squid ink toast, so I knew what I'd be getting immediately! The slightly spiced hollandaise, coupled with the runny yolk of two perfectly poached eggs with a juicy piece of soft shell crab (which, might I add, was coated in the most umami combination of spices) made lapping this up absolutely bloody glorious! I give it a 9/10 only because I could've eaten more of the crab, but that's just me being greedy. #ilovecrab 😂
In any case, a massive shout out to the awesome staff at Major Tom for doing their absolute best today. I know it's always crazy during an opening weekend and, despite a few minor mistakes due to the frantic insanity, we completely understood and had no issues! It's wonderful to have staff who are so considerate, who take care of you and, despite the circumstances, do everything they can to make you feel comfortable even amidst madness. We were apologised to numerous times but I could see in their faces how genuinely they meant that and, even so, we absolutely did not need one nor did we think any ill of them. Their work today was awesome and food to show for it. Nice one, team! See you again soon! I need a cream donut next time. Hahaha.
This place is always crowded during the weekend so not ideal for large groups. We managed to get seats more quickly with just two people.
I was quite keen to try out this place because there aren’t many places in this area with so much buzz, but was also a bit reserved as I wasn’t a fan of Winona Forever which was started by the same people. However I must say that Major Tom is an improvement on their previous venture.
I ordered the soft shell crab benedict. This usually comes on a squid ink brioche but I opted to change for the spinach brioche. Overall it was tasty, a bit heavy but what you’d expect for an egg dish with generous portions of soft shell crab and thick brioche bread. It delivered exactly as it said on the menu but did not exceed my expectations.
Staff were generally helpful but the wait time for food was long due to the busy time for brunch (40+ minutes). Wouldn’t mind coming again to try something different when it’s less busy.
Such a cool cafe in Albany! Very interesting menu that offers many goodies that other cafes won’t have. The ambience is very cool, with beautiful graphics on the wall and a nice outdoor eating area. Caramel hot chocolate is perfect on a cold day, quite rich but very enjoyable. The French Toast had a lot going on but every part of it was delicious. Overall would visit again and so should you!
Major Tom is relatively new, but definitely has that familiar Winona vibe.
It’s in a fabulous open space in a new area close to Albany mall & has lots of seating options
Service was friendly enough, and meals/coffee were delivered in good time
The menu is varied with lots of innovative options. It would be great to have this online somewhere for those of us who like to check out the menu first - I have included a copy for this reason (maybe they could add one to their FB page?)
Their cabinet was full of lots of delicious treats too so you may want to save room for something or take away a treat for later.
I ordered a coffee which was strong & well made. The French toast was really well balanced & delicious. Lots of flavours & textures which made every mouthful enjoyable.
Will be back to try a few of the other dishes which I had trouble deciding between today.

Great food! Great service and every one is super friendly :) Food is unique and executed perfectly and absolutely delicious! Think it will be my new local
Hmm...food was beautifully presented, as expected (like Winona Forever...etc),
Coffee was good but found menu food average. I like their baking more so will probably return more for morning tea/afternoon tea.., haven’t tried their salads yet.
Love this cafe so much! Their french toast was too pretty to eat! It tasted better than what it looks. My friend had soft shell crab bene which was also delicious. Will defs come back for another brunch.
Wow so this place is our new fave.
Spacious and funky inside, lovely wait staff.
Food is TO DIE FOR.
Mr and Mrs Puddingcake plus the 3 little cakes ordered...
The big breakfast- huge and delicious, the usual suspects (eggs bacon sausage toast) PLUS pork belly and the sausage was fantastic. Bread is Russian Rye (delish and chewy and dark. Yum)
Heirloom tomatoes on kumara sourdough-delish with some sort of feta cream loads of tomatoes plus a poached egg.
Children’s French toast which they whipped up for us not on menu- the kids were in love. Brioche with cinnamon sugar, maple syrup and bacon.
The cabinet food also looks insane.
Definitely going back!
Great little cafe with heaps of potential. I ordered the Dulce de Leche French Toast and the hype was more than accurate - it was incredible. However, what they consider to be iced chocolate left a lot to be desired. For $6, I expect a lot more than milk with chocolate sauce and a handful of ice cubes! That’s just cold chocolate milk.
Already know this place is gonna be a favourite of mine.
Already so busy even after only being opened for such a short time. The presentation of the food is stunning as pictured below is the French toast as well as some tasty cabinet treats. Have also gotten takeaway salads from their cabinet which have been really nice. Overall the staff are lovely and definitely worth going just to see the mural and unique decoration of the place!
A very new addition to the amazing range of restaurants on the North Shore is Major Tom in Rosedale. The menu offers a good range of classics, but with innovative twists, and the emphasis on organic and healthy but tasty wholefoods - all eggs are poached and not a chip in sight! We went for the Major Tom Big Breakfast and the Lucha Pork Eggs Benedict. The place was fairly busy, so the service was a little slow, but some teething problems are to be expected at first. The food more than made up for the wait as it was well presented and a feast for the eyes. The Big breakfast was indeed big, comprising pork belly, lamb and feta sausages, tomatoes, mushrooms, poached eggs, vegetable pakora fritters, avocado and rye bread toast, and was superb (the Pork belly was particularly moreish). The eggs Benedict, comprising pulled pork, poached eggs, preserved beetroot, and candied pumpkin seeds served on a huge chunk of brioche was simply delicious and full of wonderful flavours. Both the dishes were creatively plated, substantial, healthy and great tasting. We will definitively be back to try some of the other inventive healthy creations on offer.
Rosedale's got a new it spot - Major Tom calling attention of all those on the shore. By the time I got here on Sunday morning for brunch it was completely packed. Luckily there wasn't a wait for a table for 2 but I'd suggest getting there early if you're a larger group.
Everything on the menu sounded amazing but I went with the chilli scrambled eggs and my friend got the soft shell crab with brioche. Glad I had a small breakfast because there was a 35 minute wait for our food. Frustrating to see so many plates go out sitting next to the kitchen but completely understandable considering how busy it was that morning. My scrambled eggs came with halloumi, perfectly grilled fresh broccolini, beetroot hummus, chorizo and slices of fresh red peppers. My only complaint was the toast being a bit too hard and dry, one corner of it being burnt, and finding a piece of eggshell within the eggs.
I think this place has the potential to be a 5/5 but it's still teething at the moment, small things like missing cutlery and hovering waitstaff. Overall it was an awesome brunch spot so I'll definitely be back to taste other items on the menu.
I went to Major Tom because I knew whatever item I ordered would be beautifully displayed, I was not disappointed in the slightest.
I ordered the ‘Shaka brush’ salad replacing the halloumi with chicken and the black currant organic mechanic kombucha. Bright pink and very aesthetic looking were my first thoughts, yet it only got better as the salad was delicious and the extra chicken was too. At $19.5 it was well worth it. We also had the Major Tom Big Breakfast, which had its own unique spin from the common. The pork belly and onion bhaji especially so. At $23.0 it was reasonably priced for a unique extremely large meal.
The location is perfect and I really love the open plan inside/outside deck. The entire cafe has a nice vibe with bright colours, artwork and delicious food. The service is very friendly and helpful, despite not being smooth as of yet. In the loud and busy lunchtime we didn’t feel like we were waiting, having the food arrive around 12-15 minutes after ordering.
The only downside is the coffee. On my first visit to Major Tom I came in to grab a coffee, when it arrived the coffee was nearly completely black as the milk had dissociated from the water (almond milk), I was not impressed. Therefore on this second visit I didn’t have coffee with my meal, however my friend did, just as disappointed with what they received. The foam/milk looked and smelt burnt, it tasted watery and like instant coffee. For supreme coffee it’s just a let down.
Overall Major Tom is a really lovely place to eat, but maybe not for a coffee date.
OMG. Everything here was delicious. The coffee, the beautiful iced coffee, our turmeric fish and soft shell crab eggs benny. Imaginative, delicious, friendly service, what more could you want? A few construction guys just doing a bit of last minute touch ups as this opened like a week ago, so that’s allowed. But go, it’s amazing.
We visited over the weekend as fans of Winona Forever. It was a very hot day and it was a little uncomfortable eating inside the cafe but we were there to eat the food and not whinge about heat.
The food we ordered was lovely though!
To look at, as well as to eat! Savory mushrooms encased in a crepe with a perfect poached egg and a Haloumi and Beetroot Salad.
The meals are so beautifully presented, a visual feast for the eyes.
The service was slightly patchy but it has only been open a few days so that should be ironed out BUT the staff were really friendly and helpful so that certainly made up for it.
Winona Forever has a better selection in the decadent sweets cabinet, but it seems MT will be working on adding some different sweet treats in the future.
We are definitely coming back, and I am sure on a very regular basis!
Just had the loveliest brunch here, popped in because I was in the area and the servers were super friendly, one guy in particular made my morning and was just amazing, didn’t quite get his name but he was amazing. French toast was great!
It was the best experience.^^ Food, beverage and even coffee were all perfect. The food was worth the price. My friend and I had a great time.😁
Soft shell Crab Benny is very delicious, and Fried Chicken French Toast is yum as well! Good Coffee and friendly service.
Really worth going - appetising food and great service so impressed- love the aoli
EDIT.
After my review the manager emailed me back addressing my concerns and explaining other things. Thanks very much for listening and so promptly emailing me back. This business clearly listens to it's customers and makes changes for the better. Update to 4 stars.
We had a delicious family meal with something on the menu for everyone. The dessert cabinet was amazing and we were spoilt for choice! The staff were happy and friendly and their service was fantastic. It is really good to have Major Tom in Albany and recommend it highly.
One of my favorite cafes on the shore. Food and coffee always consistently good. Great cabinet food and kitchen menu. The staff are a bit hit and miss. Some days I've had outstanding service, some days they look a bit lost and not sure what to do. Will keep going back for the incredible food and coffee though!
Quiet cafe right next to a daycare. Parking is a little awkward but their bakery items looked delicious! Slices, scones, and muffins are all available at Major Tom and they have plenty of seating. They also serve coffee and fluffies for the little ones. Employees were friendly and the inside was clean.
Enjoyed their scrambled eggs and mushrooms on toast. Good vibes and they had a nice mural painting on their walls. Quite tricky to find a parking spot but eventually found one. Good place for a brunch and catch up with a friend~ :).
What a wonderful gem of a place to visit in the suburb of Rosedale. Wonderful service and a wonderful array of food. I ordered the mushroom and pistachio quiche served with a side salad and relish. I also ordered an almond latte and the passionfruit slice which I wanted for later. This was put in a nice little box to take with me and sealed carefully with a Major Tom sticker. The quiche was heated by request and a generous portion arrived that was well presented with a sweep of relish and a leafy side salad. Staff were attentive and the place had a lovely vibe. The passionfruit slice that was boxed was later devoured at home and it was divine. I would not hesitate to recommend this cafe and give it 5 stars.
Delicious cafe that has always delivered. This is very hip and trendy and so, appropriately, the flavours are huge. Everything is very well seasoned and full of personality, as well as plated beautifully. They will switch out bits of dishes to accommodate allergies. The service is quick and polite. The toilets are clean .. though almost offensively bright! The location is a very cool one with some parking. Usually plenty of space inside as it's really big.
I have yet to try the cabinet food because the plated menu is so good, but it looks absolutely delicious.
Delicious.
Love the way you can kinda build ya breakfast.
I always get poached eggs on toast with hollandaise and bacon.
The ingredients feel and taste high quality.
We had Fried chicken French toast and Scrambled eggs with an iced coffee and oat milk latte. Good atmosphere food and drinks even on a rainy Saturday morning.
Meal was freaking awesome, great to see some awesome twists on cafe classics such as the Soft Shell Crab Eggs Bennie.
My coffee was not the best, and due to the design of the building it's very loud but this also gives it a vibe and buzz.
Staff are cool and freindly and again those meals yum!
