I was here for a lunch with a friend. We had pork ribs and fries. The fries were really good. The pork ribs were good, but the half rack was quite smaller than I expected. The service was really great though, and I loved the pickles too. Really good hot spicy sauce is available if you like a bite :-) And the free underground parking is a great advantage. Will definitely be back with a bigger appetite!
Great food, enjoyed everything we ordered. BBQ prawns and pulled lamb a favourite. Friendly service.
My wife and I went for lunch courtesy of a Treat Me voucher which was well expired. The manager insisted on honouring it due to my having been hospitalised and the effects of Covid 19 whereby they had been forced to close for some time. I enjoyed a beautifully cooked sirloin and my wife a tasty cauliflower main and a chocolate mousee dessert she adored. The service was the best I had experienced and the friendly chef even helped me out as I am wheelchair bound. All in all it was a meal to be remembered and we will definitely be back even though it is a bit of a hike from where we live in Northland.
Good food, friendly staff, though was a little difficult to understand the accent.
Posted on Instagram food reviewing account as well @nourishingmei
Miss Moonshine’s! Last night we went to Miss Moonshines which is located on Ponsonby road down a little alleyway but was still easy to find. We ordered the beef brisket, pulled lamb and fries! Overall the portion sizes we had were pretty good especially the fries, I literally have not seen that many fries at such good quality for $10! The beef brisket was our fav it was tender, well cooked and full of flavour. The beef went very well with the picked onion and the moonshine bbq sauce (just don’t put too much on as it is spicyyy). The beef was easily the best I’ve ever eaten if I’m being 100% honest 😍. The pulled lamb was cooked well and full of flavour and went well with both sauces provided! The fries that we ordered were so nice and crisp and oh man just so so so good. Service was very fast and efficient, friendly staff and at the start of the meal we were run through the menu and how the restaurant runs, I was surprised to learn that the beef brisket was smoked for 10hrs beforehand and the pulled pork was for 6hrs! I also learnt that they use pohutukawa wood to smoke the meat which I find pretty neat and wouldn’t have known otherwise. Although we didn’t book beforehand we were still able to get a table with no fuss but will definitely remember to book next time. Overall would rate @missmoonshines 5/5 and am definitely coming back again 😍
My love for smoked meats knows no boundary so when my missus booked a table for my birthday dinner here you can imagine the excitement I felt. Firstly the staff - accommodating & well versed in their selection of meats and drinks. The decor was..... interesting....particularly the giant cow mural staring at you as you shovel meat into your pie-hole. The warm-white lighting emanates a backyard BBQ vibe and the smell is enough to make your mouth water. I've had a lot of smoked brisket and they get the nod of approval from me. Juicy, tender to the touch and almost melts on the palate. My only gripe here would be the portions are a tad too small for what it's worth and get rid of that cow man...it's creepy....
Just a warning to Zomato Gold users its 1 gold per table if you were planning to use it here. Came as 4 thinking we would get the max of 2 per table however its 1 per table at this restaurant.
I rarely eat this type of food but, it was really nice.
Had the Beef Brisket, Half Rack Ribs, Lamb, Sausages (tasted like Chorizo’s to me).
Good service, nice atmosphere. Portions were a bit small though which is abit of a con.
Had a great food experience. Ordered beef brisket and short Rib Really awesome. American style with kiwi touch 😍. Pulled pork slider was also really tasty and mouth lickering. Loved the way they treat customers also. Friendly staffs and good dine in ambiance.
Another awesome option to treat yourself or host a speacial occasion. Awesomefood at an affordable price. And they also have vegetarian options. Loved their starters and friendly staff. 👌
very yummy had a great time!
food yummy? yes.
food a lot? yes.
people nice? yes.
go back again? yes.
Fantastic food with great (yet easy going) service. Well worth the visit.
Lovely restaurant, lovely food- probably just too rich for me. Im giving a 4 for such good service! Everyone was very attentive of their customers needs, refilling our water all the time, explaining the menu to us- how to order, what to order and asking how our food was. I wanted actually to give 4.5 stars because of such good service. If ever im coming back is because of the service and not so much of the food— as it is quite pricey and even though im a meat lover— it was too rich for me.
Loved everything we ordered! Both meats were juicy and tender! Loved their sauces and the chips were divine! The staff was accommodating and attentive too!
We dined in here on a lunch time and we ordered most of what’s on the menu to try basically everything, there’s too much food we don’t have any more space for desserts, well there is always a next time. Miss Moonshines is located in Ponsonby just a road away from the popular Ponsonby Central, on the premises there are only two establishments this one and The Street Food Collective (will be trying this next).
Miss Moonshines was probably one of the best restaurants I've been to this year.
When we first got here, the staff promptly seated us and gave us a nice explanation of how the menu works. They have a nice selection of beers on tap (I highly recommend the Pilsners), and the service was very hospitable.
The food came pretty quickly and we ordered the beef brisket and pork ribs. The pork ribs were good, but the beef brisket was absolutely scrumptious. I highly recommend getting the beef brisket with a side of fries. Portion sizes are also quite generous.
All and all, a very nice and pleasant experience. I highly recommend checking this place out.
My husband's favorite restaurant for meat. Their cooking methods are fantastic. Environment 5/5 .service 4/5 food quality 5/5 food quantity 4/5
Been here a couple times - food always great, ribs was so tender, and the beef brisket was so juicy. Staffs were friendly and really great customer service!
Booked a table on Friday night, but wasn’t too many people at all. Had trouble getting into the car park but staff was very helpful. We ordered 2 drinks, a kumara bread as starter, pulled lamb and pork ribs. Lamb was a little bit dry and chewy, pork ribs came in only 4 pieces and tasted really sour in its sauce... but the kumara bread was really lovely.
for me not really worth its price
Amazing food and service. Pork ribs and beef brisket sooo good. The staff were so nice and brought toys for my 2 year old son. Make sure you have a reservation because it can be busy.
Great service, waitress had great recommendations and was full of energy! The atmosphere was relaxed and most importantly the food was fantastic.
We got the starter kumara bread with relish which was lovely. We got the pulled lamb and beef brisket, lamb was the favourite but both delicious.
Amazing! We got the beef brisket, ribs, and slaw. The meat was delicious, super tender and had that smokey BBQ taste. And the slaw was good too. Would've been very pricey if we didn't have Zomato gold. The portion sizes could've been better too.
Had an amazing experience last night for dinner. I was so full from dinner. Got the pork ribs and beef brisket with the side of fries and tater tots. I wanted to try the milk buns but they didn’t have any left. Also had the raspberry mojito which was really good. Very happy with what we had. Also service was really great!
We thoroughly enjoyed our meal at Miss Moonshine’s. It was our first time dining in - we’ve had drinks and snacks here before but never a full meal.
The highlight of our meal were the starters: the beef tongue and the jalapeño poppers were delicious and well portioned to set the tone for the rest of the meal, we joked about coming back and just having a meal with the starters.
The mains (brisket and ribs) were tasty and we always enjoy smokehouse because the portions are weighted, so it is consistent and we always know the amount to expect, and we were not disappointed. We also ordered a side of tater tots and slaw and were quite happy with both the crunchiness and the portion.
The staff were very attentive and friendly, clearing away eaten dishes and refilling our drinks promptly. They were also very humorous and provided great recommendations when requested. Definitely somewhere we’d be revisiting.
Was out in Ponsonby to grab some dinner and figured I should use my Zomato gold. Miss Moonshine’s popped up and the menu looked so good.
Staff are friendly and the menu is very unique with all sorts of meats. My partner and I order the beef brisket, 100grams of sausage, slaw and fries.
The sausage was juicy and had a nice spicy kick, went really well with the sauces provided. The beef brisket was really tender but a little dry so would recommend it with one of the sauces they give you. I really enjoy the bbq sauce with the brisket. The slaw was really fresh, saucy and had a great crunch. Fries were standard but delicious.
Overall very great experience at Miss Moonshine’s and the provide 1+1 on food so definitely great value for money!!
Great service - they really catered well especially for a group with no reservation, they made a big table for us outside and put up a heater for us which was very warm. The lighting was a bit dark but that was all good. Staff came by regularly to see if we needed anything.
We ordered a range of Meat (chicken, lamb, brisket, pork ribs – the best) a couple of fries (really tasty) and a side of slaw. They also bring out a few sauces – the hot sauce is the hottest sauce ever! I did feel the chicken I had tasted too burnt, but maybe I picked a burnt side of the chicken, as the rest of the group really seemed to enjoy it.
I also ordered a mocktail which was refreshing and reasonably priced ($10.00)
Drinks were served and then food followed relatively quickly with all the meat apportioned in two trays.
Busy place, next time I’ll be making a booking in advance!
Caught up with a couple of friend last night here and Miss Moonshine did not let us down. The five of us ordered stuffed jalapeños with cream cheese for starter, and four other dishes from the mains, along with beer and mojito. Everything was yummy, the place was pretty chilled, and the waitress was very good looking, attentive, absolutely 5 star. I’m sure I’ll be back to try other dishes soon.
Perfect environment for BBQ meat. Amazing food. Personal favourite was beef brisket and the fries. Don't get me started on their f*ck me hot sauce. So good.
Such an amazing experience! All the staff were super friendly and accommodating. The food was absolutely fantastic as well! We will definitely be back!
Great friendly staff - fast service. Had the beef brisket, chicken leg, fries, greens and milk bread. All were very nice. Also had their “mystery tap beer” and it was amazing. Best thing that night. A bit on the pricey side. Even with Zomato gold it still came to $80. So i will return, just not quickly.
That feeling when you get seated at the restaurant you hope the food is great so you can love this restaurant even more! That’s what I felt when I walked into this place that’s tucked always just off ponsonby road.
Big open kitchen and what immediately draws me over is the big as smoker and that big as timber log they are using as a table.
Food how ever was ok! Definitely above average but I have tasted better smoke meat in Auckland. Their deep fried food such as the chips and jalapeño poppers were top notch!
Meat itself was nice, but the portion was rather small. We had 2 couples and ordered 4 different portions of meat to share with bit and pieces of sides as well. I was ok full, but we did also order 4 jugs of beer with the meal.
I would give it another go to try a few more things on the menu.
IG worthy: 4/5 yeah! Your friends would think ur successful as eating all that meat in a nice establishment
Food: 3/5 had better smoked meat else where
Service: 5/5 very attentive hence the 4 jugs of beer!

Been wanting to come here for so long and finally did with a work mate and hubby. First impression was it looked very cosy and warm felt that intimate vibe in a shared dimmed ally way. Was greeted by the waitress who showed us to our seats, presented us with the menu and offered an option of tap water or sparkling water. As we waited for our water we had come to a conclusion that the meat plater, sweet potatoe bread, slaw, jalapeño poppers, chicken nibbles and milk buns was the choices for the night. It didn’t take long till our food was laid out on our table. Our eyes were filled with joy when we saw the portions. This is the moment me and hubby have been waiting months for...finally!!! Took my first taste of the beef brisket and hello....it was just the same as a home smoked one. Don’t get me wrong, the meat was tender melt in your mouth but the taste was just ordinary to me it just tasted like an umu or hangi as we know in maori. This place is great in location and the atmosphere was laid back chilled. Waiters and waitresses were awesome always topping our water up. I will return some time to this place.
O m g. If you're looking at this review, then you want American BBQ. If that's the case, you won't be disappointed.
1. Jalapeno poppers were the BOMB. So much flavour !! Highly recommended. 5/5
2. Wings with kiwi dip - delicious with the cumin rub and sprinkles. 4.5/5
3. F*CK me that's hot chilli sauce. If you can handle the heat, then go ahead. If you're a wuss like me, then try it anyway. Caroline reaper chilli sauce is no joke lol. I prob lost 1L of water in sweat. 11,000/5 for spiciness. 2,200,000 SHU
4. Sausage, brisket, chicken leg - very good also. I loved the sauces that it came with. Chimichurri sauce was my fav. The BBQ sauce was amazing also. 5/5
The corn on the side could've been better. 4.8/5
Service was impeccable.
5/5 would return.

Amazing Slow Cooked Barbeque Restaurant in Ponsonby
The absolute best slow cooked Beef briskets I have ever had.
Lamb was slightly tough but still very good, pork ribs just fell off the bone.
Sides were huge, totally worth the money, especially the coleslaw.
Highly recommended, definitely going there to try their sausages soon.
Came with Zomato gold group today.
The quality of meat for the money is outstanding. Delicious briskit, yummy ribs and the sauces just made the meats all stand out!
Must not miss out! Service was excellent too.

The service is soooo nice. Manager Katie provide really warm services. Lots available parking. Love their special homemade BBQ sauce, pretty smoky style. lamb is a little bit dry though. Beet brisket is so juicy. Recommend to all meat lovers!
Food is great and service is awesome!!!
A really nice place to enjoy drink and food with friends. Use the Zomato gold is really a great
bargain.
Sunday: It was a total accident that we came here as our original lunch plans fell through. Tucked in a quiet corner down an alleyway from Ponsonby Road, was Miss Moonshine. Inviting wafts of smoked meat had us salivating and we were quickly seated. We ordered 2 mains, side of greens and a kid's meal. 🐂The beef brisket, smoked for 10 hours, was meltingly tender and delicious. The fat to meat ratio delivered the ultimate flavour bomb and together with the parsley, chilli and red wine vinegar chimicurri sauce, it was the best smoked meat we've had in a while.
🐑Pulled lamb, smoked for 6 hours, this was juicy and meaty as well. 🥦🥬The broccollini and silver beet side was very generous, and cooked with a buttery sauce that matched very well with the meats.
🥪🍟🌽Kids meal consists of pulled pork toastie with cheese and BBQ sauce, corn cob & fries. (J saw "Ice cream sundae 🍨" and that was it 😅.)
This was done with the same care and attention as the rest of the meal: grilled corn cob had slatherings of herbed butter and garlic, and kernels were popping sweet juices with each bite. Fries were battered and crunchy, very flavoursome. The pulled pork toastie was the only let down as it had little pork but we think this is designed more for little kiddies as a small taster and our 10 year old has well developed taste buds 😉. 🍨The kid's sundae however, stole our hearts❤️: vanilla bean ice cream with caramel, oreo pieces, honeycomb and nuts, it had the three of us fighting over it. (secretly think the Chef was having a good day and being super generous as we couldn't believe the size of it!) This is a 5-star meal, which we will repeat very soon!

Had dinner tonight at Miss Moonshine’s. Food was beautifully cooked and the service was top class. Katie from Manchester was serving us and went out of the way to ensure food allergies were catered for. Thanks again!
LOVE THIS PLACE!!! Went as soon as it opened for the day and the staff was both lovely and attentive. Food was exactly what we were after without being too much or too heavy. Atmosphere was perfect for an overcast Auckland day. I couldn’t fault this place and will recommend to all my friends and definitely be back :)
Ordered beef brisket, chicken legs, oysters, and fries
Right from the start, staff are friendly, polite and helpful. An early dinner date, started with quick efficient service drinks and starters, frequent check on how the night was going or a quick glance to ensure nothing was empty. Food was delicious, the menu was refreshed at the start of the year. Meat was falling off the bone, chicken wings with a kiwi styled dip and kumara bread. We shared 2 starters and 1 main 400g pork ribs was enough for the two of us.
Had dinner here after my graduation! I love the ambience, the music and their staff. Most of all, their food was amazing! Jalapeño poppers, and hangi kumara were to die for.
Went here on Friday with my family. The food was very yummy and our waiter (a guy) was awesome. Definitely would go again when feeling like lots of meat!!
Food was exquisite the waiting staff were awesome but the food was melt in your mouth and the Marmaduke jug highly recommended and the Doris cocktail with light show.....oh you will be seeing me again!!!!!!
Went for dinner last night - love this pl - it is a family favourite- the venue is nice, it has a funky vibe, the food is fantastic, the prices are all good, service is spot on. Portions have gone a bit smaller but the food is to be shared - had the rib, pork, chicken with potato skins, Mac & cheese & slaw, washed down with a jug of marmaduke. Will def be back 👌🏽
Great service. Our waitress Juanita was super friendly, warm & informative. The food was beautiful. We had the brisket & pulled pork, plus Hungi style kumura & the & refried bean roasted eggplant. We came on a TreatMe voucher & therefore thought it worked out value wise, but honestly - had it not been on a voucher, $18 for one roasted eggplant & $34 for 3 slices of brisket seemed a bit steep. They should probably think about dropping their prices slightly & maybe doing half serves or a mixed meat value plate. Also sad that so much of their menu wasn't available, i.e beef rib, potato skins (which is half the reason we came) & the tomahawk
Great smoky flavours and fall-apart meat. Sides were yummy, service was good and cool ambience. Only downside was that a few of the sides were a little too on the spicy side for our older diners (and weren’t advertised as being spicy on the menu). Other than that we had an enjoyable meal.
The ambiance and the service was nice, they are very attentive and friendly. But my favorite was the donuts every time I think of it I wanted to go back in there to have some.
Great service. The food is authentic, perfectly cooked and served in perfect amounts. We got the beef brisket which I could not have been more impressive with. The slaw was perfect. The chicken wrapped chorizo was innovative and went well with the cheese sauce.
If you like bbq and you haven’t been back here in the last 6 months. I think it’s worth a repeat
Believe it or not, we at Hungry Auckland sometimes don’t feel like going out to a restaurant. Yes, we realise that may come as a shock to most of our readers but after one particularly tiring weekend all we wanted to do was lay on the sofa and order take out. But we wouldn’t be Hungry Auckland if we were going to be happy with any kind of take away. It had to be high quality, satisfying and cooked with precision. With this in mind we fired up our UberEATS app and scrolled through the many options available.
Wow stunning bbq . Been here twice. Once for my bday and had the set menu which was definitely worth every penny and plenty food. The sides are delicious and meat is always tender. Friendly staff and great setting
Nice service, smaller meat portions, but insanely tasty. Had ordered 2 meat options and 4 sides (some aren't featured)+ drinks between 3 girls. Would consider revisiting if I find myself craving some meat while in Ponsonby.
Love the vibe at the place. The macaroni balls are a definate favourite here for us (and the Sangria lol). Service is second to none without a crazy deep hole in the pocket.
After watching show after show about the marvel that is American BBQ, we wanted to see what Auckland has to offer in terms of it. Highly rated here, we gave this place a try first.
Service is standard and the ambience is nice, open and modern. Fair enough with it being summer but a few flies around, maybe some bug barrier might help.
We had pimmped tea, corn bread, hot wings, pigs tails, mac 'n' cheese balls and the beef rib. Everything was delicious and came out in good time. Photo of the sauces because the hot sauce is freaking HOT!
Pretty good dinner and we're keen to come back to try out the rest of the menu.
Sometimes we like to pretend we’re clean-eating, chai-sipping, yoga-practising vegans worthy of our central-westie stereotype. Other times we just want to... not be. Today we chose Miss Moonshines, tucked in where the Street Food Collective thrives in the backstreets of Ponsonby, the aromas of slow-cooked, smokey, fall-of-the-bone meat beckoned us to our demise.
Because we can’t just eat one thing ever, we decided to share the following: -Mac ‘n’ cheese balls with bacon crumb and truffle mayo -Market fish ceviche with lime, coconut and whitlof -Pig tail fries with bobby john and aioli -Pork belly rib with Moonshine's sticky BBQ sauce, crackling and pickled cabbage -Beef brisket with Truffle butter and grits
It wasn’t long until we were coma’d out with our food babies. Yep coma’d. It’s a thing. Google it.
Check out our individual food reviews here: husk.co.nz/lunches/miss-moonshines
Smokey smoked goodness! Highlight of the meal was the spicy crispy fried chicken and the beef short rib! Loved their version of the Bloody Mary cocktail! I can’t say the smoked meats are a main size but I’m not sure if they’re meant to be. Delicioussssss. Will definitely be back ☺️
With a six-month old baby joining us for her dad’s birthday lunch, the thought of having to drive to the city and walking in the rain to The Crab Shack at the Viaduct was a dread. I was sort of hoping they would decide to go elsewhere. Not knowing what to expect when we arrived at my daughter and son-in-law’s home, we were glad when they decided to go to another venue instead.
Miss Moonshine’s is a Ponsonby restaurant that’s all about low and slow American BBQ. Hidden at the back of a building off the main street, the space is surprisingly large, with the open indoor area and spacious outdoor area providing lots of seating options.
Friendly staffs, but I don't recommend salmon and beef brisket. However bbq Pork belly was nice.
Also, their deep fried pork skin was more than cripy; few crips was hard so couldn't eat.
Overall, pork belly was tasty

Food is amazing and really friendly staff. Only downfall was we were told that one main was enough for 2 people, but by god luckily we got 2 mains because 1 main would have us starving and struggling to walk back to our car. So for future patrons please get atleast 1 main each. Stay safe
Came here for dinner on Friday with my partner and house mates, we got the set menu for 4 people and it was plenty of food! The boys thought everything was amazing - I liked it but feel like I've had better. I suppose it's different taste buds but everything was beautifully cooked and done really well. My favorite was the spicy chicken pieces and this fried bread they served with the mains! Definitely try if you haven't before.
Had the ceviche, pork belly and beef short ribs there the other night. Ceviche was average. Pork belly was very good, very moist and sauce really complemented well. Beef short ribs were nicely cooked but needed bit more flavour.
Came with a group of girlfriends and we went for the $70 set menu. Everything was full of flavour and so juicy. The cornbread and the pork belly were amazing and found the sizes to be generous.
Went here last night for a little date night with my partner! The food was fantastic, the service was great!
Would highly recommend this to anyone looking for great meat/BBQ place!
Food was delicious &a well worth it 😍. Although was a bit disappointed because we had to pay to eat the birthday cake on the premise considering we spent quiet a lot on dinner itself .
We came here for dinner..great parking under ground ... it wasn't busy on a Sunday .... service was excellent.
We ordered most of the starters, one kind of meat and couple of sides:
Jalapeño peppers-YUM
Mac'n'cheese balls-really tasty
Steamed pulled pork buns-delicious
Eggplant-nice but sitting in too much oil
Spicy fried chicken-YUM
Shrimp, prawn & crayfish cocktail-YUM
Beef short rib-Tasty & super tender
Hangi-style Kumera-really nice
Cauliflower cheese-really nice
Great restaurant...very enjoyable dinner out with a group.
Did try the chocolate mousse dessert...

This is a fine dining experience that you remember. The service is outstanding and the food is artful and surprising in a good way. Loved the steak and the sauces and dips served along.
The food was really delicious. We ordered the fried chicken, corn bread, pig tail fries, and jalapeño poppers. Portion sizes were a little small for the price they charge. Would order again.
Went for a work dinner with 15 ppl. Booking was easy with the online booking form. Service was fantastic(Charlie & Katie) Food was exceptional. We had the $45 set menu with some additional starters. We all rolled out of the restaurant with belts groaning. All in all 3 hours of drinking and eating came to an average of $85 each; and we werent taking it easy either. On top of this the environment is great if a little noisey. Conversations down the tables ok but speeches would be pretty hard if im getting picky. The place was full of happy diners. Highly recommended.
Have been here twice now over the last month. I really like the food here. The mac n cheese balls, jalapeno poppers and eggplant dishes are fantastic. Really tasty and well prepared. The beef rib is super soft and full of flavour. The pulled pork is the only pulled pork that I have had that is super good, I has it the first time with delicious crackling and the second time it had no crackling but only crispy bacon which was disappointing as I felt like we should have been told before ordering as I probably would have ordered something else instead.
The lamb and brisket is good too, the brisket was a little bit drier than I was hoping for and compared to other briskets I have had.
I would have rated 5 after my 1st visit but after my second visit I had to give a 4.
I will be back though but next time I will make sure to ask if it is crackling or bacon that they will serve with the pulled pork and I probably won't order the brisket.
Other than that the service here was excellent both times as well as the drinks, maybe next time I will leave space for dessert.
Great as usual. One of the few places that know how to smoke meat. The pull pork and crackling was good. Had the spicy chicken and halapeno poppers. So good. Price for two will be about $45ea with a beer each.
Came here the other night for a birthday dinner. Service is awesome, wait staff are constantly refilling your water & asking if you would like another drink.
Food is designed for sharing yet they portions are pretty small and come in odd numbers 🙄
Mac and cheese balls which were really tasty
Spicy chicken is also really good.
Overall Miss moonshines is nice but very expensive.
Went here on a Friday night with friends for my birthday. Had a fun night, they sang me happy birthday and let me blow the cork off my champagne bottle which was cool. Food was delicious!! Reason for the low rating is because we all left absolutely reeking of smoke and meat! I'm not sure if there was a ventilation problem that night because my eyes also felt sore from the smoke in the air but, unfortunately, this puts me off coming back. I've even washed my hair and it still smells. Bit of a shame but an otherwise great night.
Meat + Smoke + Salt + Mouthgasm = Food Baby
With our friend Jareth (no, he wasn't in the Labyrinth) over from Australia for the week it was time to bring the F.N.D.C back together. (Friday Night Dinner Club). It was a Thursday night, so things were already off to a strange start ....
Through the online booking system I had requested crayons and paper for the table in the special requests box, Miss M delivered! Can't tell you how happy I was to see a silly request like that met. Nothing says fun like a group of adults under the influence, drawing "We miss you ...." cards using only their left hands, our friend Jareth left with a handful of cards to pin on his fridge back in Aus.
So ..... The food, how does it match up to it's peers? Miss Clawdy, Orleans ..... Very bloody well indeed. Miss Clawdy, a fine lass you are, sorry to say Miss Moonshine has your number. Orleans, I enjoy your atmosphere and live music, but your food has some catching up to do to be on the same level as Miss Moonshine's.
We all agreed on the $45 set menu with a few crowd pleasing starters thrown on top for good measure. This started with Corn Bread + Burnt Butter, Buttermilk Fried Chicken, & Tuna ceviche. On top we ordered the Mac n Cheese balls, because let's face it, when do you not want to eat deep fried Mac n Cheese? Also Jalapeno Poppers wrapped in bacon . All food bangin', no complaints, a happy table chowing down on some damn righteous food.
The mains were served, what came out was an amazing selection of smoked meats form The Pit. The Beef Short Rip which had the consistency and texture of slow cooked beef cheeks, served with pickled veges to cut through the richness. Also served was the Beef Brisket, Pork Belly and Chicken Maryland. All arrived on platters for a very table friendly banquet. Groans of appreciation everywhere.
For me, a good measure of a restaurant is how badly I want to return. I want to return very soon. I just need to get over these meat sweats first.
What more can I say?
Miss Moonshine, you had me at hello.
P.s I have not mentioned anything about the service here, it was great. FOH not taking themselves too seriously and ensuring everything was going well for the table without being overbearing. Plus, any FOH that can fulfill a request of crayons and paper at the table has my tick of approval!
Dined here last night with the family. We had skipped lunch so we were positively famished! We ordered corn bread with burnt butter, jalapeno poppers and pulled pork bun for starters. The starters were delicious and came out quickly. The shared mains were definitely the standout for me. We ordered the beef brisket on grits, pork belly and beef short rib with smoked potato salad and kumara hangi with tomatoe sides. The meats were so juicy and tender and beautifully smoked. Loved the sides also which complimented the BBQ perfectly. The grits as well needs a mention as it was yummy and creamy. Also had the donuts and chocolate mousse desserts but seriously struggled to finish this as we were full from the mains. The service was great and very attentive - our water was constantly refilled which was awesome. I couldn't fault anything. Will definitely be back for those mains! :)
On a lazy Saturday night we decided to head down Miss Moonshines to get our weekly meat intake all in one sitting 😂🐄🐓🐖. Now I don't know if the food is exactly 'Southern' but it definitely feels like it! The meat was beautifully tender and fell apart while trying to pick it up. This place is great for sharing! They really put a lot of love into their food and you can taste the high quality ingredients that they use as well. Ps ladies... they do Frozé drinks 😉❤️🌺. I'd love to come back here and try some more items off the menu, it's definitely worth the cost as well as the struggle of finding parking 😂.
Came here for dinner as i was craving beef brisket. The place is set up well...away from the foot traffic. The service we received was quirky to say in the nicest sense. Some however may find some of the things said by the waiter rude. We ordered the brisket main, curly fries and coleslaw. The fries were crisp and came with a tasty tomato ketchup. The coleslaw was fresh and crispy. The sauce was strong and tasted like balsamic ( i usually enjoy a mayo based coleslaw). The beef brisket with grits was a miss for me. It was soft and delicious, however missed components that i need. It didnt have chimichurra, which is so important to briskets ive had before. It also didnt have pickled onion which goes so well with brisket also. They also had a lemonade stand which sold average tasting vodka lemonade (not the best mix, which came out quite sour). Overall an average attempt at american style bbq. You will only be let down if you have had actual texan bbq. Give it a go otherwise!
I was hungry for some meat and Miss Moonshine's seemed to be a good option for a Sunday lunch, as places like Nervous and Angus Steakhouse only open for dinner.
And so I came with a friend, and we started with natural oyster, which are good. They serve it with a shallot vinaigrette, but I recommend having it straight or only with lemon.
Then we moved to the mains, and ordered short ribs and pulled pork. Both are good and the ribs are slow cooked, so they are beautifully tender. The meat is high quality here, but I think they should have dry aged cuts on the menu as well.
Surprisingly the thing I liked the most was the aspargus, which came with a delicious fresh sauce and fried - but not oily - garlic.
Ribs were so well served I wasn't able to try dessert, which they did not offer anyway.
The service was initially good, but after a while we almost had to go to the counter to ask for a refill on our glass of water.
Nothing to fault ! Table of 8 with the set menu and it was absolutely fabulous. They went above and beyond to make us feel more then welcome, will definitely be returning
Delicious food! We ordered the smoked chicken maryland, Mac and cheese balls, curly fries and green vege. Everything was really quick to arrive and had great flavours. Service was prompt and friendly! :) only negative is the price - size of the meat was pretty small considering!
Such good service and great recommendations!
Food is so good and great for sharing! Loved the vibe of the place, the only thing I was disappointed with was the desserts. We got the donuts to share and they were super dry (even though the sauce was amazing)! Would go back for sure.
Went here for casual night out with a close friend. First thing that struck me was how helpful all the staff were, friendly and at times a bit cheeky 😊 in a fun way. Service was on point, within a couple of minutes we have water and a glass of wine. Food was well presented, tasty and plenty of it. Key Lime pie was to die for, and a nice way to end the meal. Stayed until closing, great service, great atmosphere, it did get a bit noisy, but for me that only seemed to add to the overall experience of the evening.
We visited Miss Moonshine's last Friday 16th Sept night. The place was bustling and the ambience was good. we were received warmly with a smile and shown to our table immediately (I had made a booking) The girl who attended to us was lovely - very friendly, helpful and made some good recommendations. She suggested that since we were 4 we could try the $45 set meal option to share so we could sample more variety. It was a good suggestion and we were served 3 starters and 3 mains, slaw and curly fries as sides. Amongst the 3 starters, the Corn bread with burnt butter was to die for! It was served warm and soft with little crunchy bits in them. The Mac n Cheese Balls were yum too, though the Tasmanian Salmon was not my favourite most - thought it was missing a little zing! The 3 mains - Beer Can Chicken, Beef Ribs and Pork were excellent. The curly fries and Slaw was very nice too. If I can add a positive criticism, it would be not to rush with serving the starters and mains altogether. We would have relished the food more if the mains were served after the starters were finished - we had hardly started on the starters when the mains were also brought in so we had to rush so the food didn't go cold. Otherwise, on the whole - great place, service, great food and enough and more quantity for 4 with the $45 set menu.
Attended the "Pit Boss Masterclass" and had a fantastic time. Excellent hospitality, great food - and an education in Low and Slow BBQ. From getting a beer to chopping up the pig, making the rubs to the actual barbecuing this was an outstanding mix.
Came for Father's day and they were really accommodating with our 6month old, even offered a quiet place to feed and/or settle him.. good to on a while though but it was a busy lunch time. We ordered pork ribs cauliflower cheese fish and curly fries.. all delicious! I would come back for the cocktails!
Great to finally make it to this popular spot. We got a table easily as we were early, but it does pay to book particularly for larger groups.
We had heard about the beef rib being one of their signature dishes & we were not disappointed. It is definitely one for meat lovers - really tender & juicy falling off the bone. Those around us chose the set menu & that was also popular with other cuts of meat like pork, and salads too.
We added a side of cauliflower cheese which was delish - crunch top & lots of chunks of cauliflower. The curly fries were a big hit too.
We shared the trio of desserts between three of us & it was worthwhile. All were well made, perfectly balanced & well presented.
Drinks wise there was a good range of wines cocktails & beers. Also their specialty which is a good selection of whiskey & bourbons (aged).
Only hiccup was not having water refilled without asking which is a pain but not a biggie. Other than that service was exceptional - we had a lovely lady who was friendly knowledgable & engaging.
Looking forward to returning & trying more of their menu.
Delicious food, great drinks list and buzzing vibrant atmosphere. Service was a bit slow when we came and the sharing option which was recommended wasn't appropriate for our table of 8. Would definitely come back though, maybe with a smaller group
The place offers a really good ambiance. Perfect for a date night. The service was lovely. I ordered:
1. Mac n cheese balls
I liked it, my boyfriend thought it was pretty average tho. The bacon adds more flavour to it. I just wished they actually put the bacon inside the mac n cheese balls.
2. Chicken popcorn
We thought it was gonna be boneless chicken in ball shape but it was actually chicken served with popcorn. The chicken was really gooood. And they came with this spicy sauce, which doubled the goodness!
3. Ribs
We didn't like the ribs. But we never had ribs before, so it could be that we might just not like ribs in general or their ribs was meh, not sure...
Visited Miss Moonshine a while ago for a birthday. First time here, and I can say it was exceptional. We got the $45 deal for four people. The meat was beautiful and big portions!! Loved it so much can't wait to visit again. Service was exceptional, friendly and helpful staff.
Food is really good here. Just for the kids menu the food is spicy. The kids didn't really eat all of their food.
Great food for adults 😁
Miss Moonshine’s is tucked down an alley in the ever trendy, hipster area of Auckland; Ponsonby. It seems that eating early is not the done thing in this area. A massive restaurant greeted me, with so many empty tables I thought that perhaps there was something I was missing. I sat down on my lonesome – second night of my business trip – and began to enjoy the absolute pinnacle of attentive service.
We ate here last night and was absolutely delighted! Coming from the south in the USA, I was a bit worried what my take would be on Southern comfort food. We ordered the cornbread, jalapeno poppers, butternut squash to start and it all was delicious! We were both blown away with the corn bread, definitely the best we've ever had in Auckland! We shared the pork hock as a main which was recommended for it's delicious crispy skin and the waitress was not wrong! We finished off with the doughnuts for dessert which were delectable! The whole meal was amazing and the service was great! Would definitely recommend going if you haven't!
Wonderful! Unable to decide on what we really wanted, we had the set menu for four. Brilliant prep on the food and decent portion sizes. Everything we had was done to perfection. I could se no flaw with dinner. The barman knew his single malts so that was even better. It would've been a 5/5 had the cocktails not disappointed. Anyway, I didn't have them so that's that.
But definitely dine here. It's fabulous with great ambience and delightful staff.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Came here last night (Saturday) was busy so we had to wait a bit to be seated but that's wasn't an issue as there was a bar just across the venue. Food was amazing the corn bread with burnt butter was amazing. We got a few starters and sides and one main to share between 3 people and we were full by the end of it and it was under $100
HooooOoOo this place knows their shit! Came here w my sister and had their beef short ribs and fried chicken for lunch and wow did not expect our food to be this good! The high rating is mainly for the ribs cause that thing was incredibly tender and perfectly smoked.. Highly highly recommend this place if you have a bit of money to spend!
This thriving restaurant is situated right in the heart of Ponsonby next to the popular Street Foods Collective joint. It provides a lively atmosphere that serves up tasty cocktails and delicious food. Perfect for large group gatherings, we sat a group of 16+ people to a rather large table for a set menu option.
It all started with the crunchy herbed cornbread & whipped butter mix. Next was the fried chicken & dipping sauce, and the raw fish, oh my word, It was all so ahhhhhmazing! Our main then came which was the potato salad, roast walnut & betts salad and a banquet of meats, pork-belly, pork hock and lamb. All the meat dishes were soooo tender and melted off the bone literally. However I wasnt a fan of the pork hock, it had a very odd flavour, Perhaps to much nutmeg? I cant pin point it. Anyways that was my only gripe of the night.
And how could I forget to mention the slushies, they were delicious! I started off with saying (Im not drinking tonight guys) and it took only one sip to end up ordering the blackberry & strawberry slushy for myself, haha typical.
Anyways the staff were friendly, attentive to our wants. However the food took a wee time getting to us, but I wont distort the rating for this as it was a hustling Saturday night and you have to expect it.
Overall, this place is BALLER and I cant wait to rebook this place with a group of friends.
Cheers Miss Moonshines
Best place I have been to in a long time! The service was amazing and the food was delicious. I highly recommend the Mac n cheese balls and ribs-they were full of flavour.
Will definitely be returning for more.
Second time here & with a baby & 3 year old this time. Thought it was going to be difficult with two little ones, but it was not. The staff were fantastic-attentive & patient. The food was a mouth-explosion...we're already thinking about when we can come again!
One thing is that Miss Moonshines doesn't make kids drinks such a Pink Panthers - this could be something to look into, my daughter couldn't drink the "pink lemonade", which a bit too soda-tasting.
Apart from that, the kids platter was fab! This time we ordered all of the starters, & they did not disappoint, one bit!!
Thank you for a pleasant dining experience, some restaurants don't cater for kids. Keep up the great waiting-staff & delicious food we don't have to wait a long time for! ☺️
What an experience!
Came here for dinner last night with a couple of friends and HOLY! it was amazing. Right from the moment we walked in the door, we were greeted, seated and given a complete run through of the dining experience. Our waitress was an absolute firecracker and a total darling. Upon her recommendations, we decided on the pulled pork and pork ribs for mains and the Mac n cheese balls, king prawns and buttermilk chicken as entrees. We were not disappointed! The Mac n cheese balls were by far my favourite dish. The truffle aioli was to die for! The pork was delicious, tasty and paired well with the potato salad that was also recommended to us.
If you're coming for drinks, the K Road cocktail will not disappoint. If you like sour lollies, it will be right up your alley. Our waitress gave us a brief history on the moonshine used which was interesting to learn.
Could not recommend this place more. They surely take care of their customers and you can tell they all love what they do 👍🏽
Went in as they opened. Prompt and friendly service, felt very comfortable. Food was brilliant with an extra touch of the hot sauce! Rich food, appetisers can fill you up!
Wow! The meat here is amazing! It was so tender it literally fell off the bone. The beef brisket is absolutely delicious.. Beautifully seasoned, smoked to perfection and perfectly balanced with pickled red cabbage. We ordered the corn bread and potato salad as sides. It was my first time trying corn bread and I can't say it's my favourite but it was cooked well and the burnt butter was divine. The decor is fresh and inviting with industrial lights intertwined with green vines. The only feature I didn't like was the large cow painted on the back wall.. Didn't quite make sense to me and I certainly didn't feel it matched the classy, sophisticated, modern dining space.
Came here on a Tues evening and it was packed with amateur diners :-) The concept is great and the menu even more so. Definitely get a few of the mains to share, since they are too big as individual portions. Flavours and combinations were superb, the service very friendly, everything very lively, and otherwise a great new addition to the P Rd culinary scene. On a weekday evening it empties out pretty quickly, but then just head across to P Central!
Miss Moonshine's is the perfect place for sharing hearty food. Service is wonderful, the down side was that we were seated under a leaky air conditioner, felt a little like a shower.. Which may be an exaggeration so it hasn't affected my review too much
We had the Mac and cheese balls which was surprisingly delicious, crunchy on the outside and cheesy on the inside. Dipped in the sauce is even greater really with the crunch of the crispy bacon. Was a fantastic start, we then moved on to the kingfish croquette which was also amazing! The flavors of the kingfish were highlighted but it wasn't fishy, it was smooth and delectable. We also ordered the eggplant, buffalo mozzarella and mint+pea purée, the eggplant wasn't great, it tasted like well oiled rubber, but the purée was so delicious, flavor some and smooth.
We also ordered the beef brisket from the pit, the tender juicy beef was only furthermore complimented by the tang of the pickle and capsicum. The herbs was possibly a little over done having to scrape the excess off wasn't ideal but overall I loved this meal!
The general price I'd say is above average but it's what's expected of dining in Ponsonby. And the food was indeed delicious, so I'm looking forward to coming back.
Came here for lunch having read good reviews about this place from several people including reviewers here. Known for its slow cooked and smoked meats it is definitely a place to be visited by carnivors...
Walked in and because it was anniversary weekend, a hot summer's day, the place was empty and we were seated promptly. The menu is varied and packed full of its speciality dishes.
We started off with slushies which were pack full of freshness with a punch of alcohol which made it a nice smack in the face (in a good way)
We then had the 3 meat sausage and the special for the day which was ciabatta roll with slaw and a choice in our case of brisket. The sausage was cooked and seasoned well with a hint of smokiness in it. Accompanied by the broccoli and tomato which added extra flavour and freshness to the dish. The addition of their own smoky barbecue sauce to the dish just brought an extra element to the dish.
The special was definitely special with its melting, soft and tender smoked meat being the star of the dish. Along with the sides of pigtail fries which was special with the aioli and ketchup and the orange and mint slaw which was extremely refreshing and added that contemporary feel to the meal.
Overall a very good meal and one to return to sometime in the future
Service was excellent, often checked up on with a friendly attitude. Had the "K Road" cocktail which was fresh and fruity but had a little too much ice versus drink. Between the 5 of us we had smokey potato salad, curly fries and cornbread for starters and all were tasty. For main I had the pork belly taco salad - little low on actual pork but was fresh and tasty. Final course was by far the best! Doughnuts with chocolate, caramel sauce and cream.. Wow! So so delicious.. Salted caramel sauce was licked clean! Would definitely go back here.
Candy coloured rainbow cocktails and bite sized truffle infused dishes to share. Come to Miss Moonshine's on any evening to enjoy a bustling loud time with good friends. We tried a number of dishes and decided it was better to get small entrees to share than some of the main dishes that were smaller in portion that we'd hoped. Mac n cheese balls with truffle mayo was a win for everyone. You know I love anything with a bit of truffle. Friend ended up coming back to Miss Moonshine's just to he could treat his girlfriend to these mac n cheese balls.
Great outdoorsy place; real kiwi bbq and chill vibe. Friendly staff.
Had the ceviche, butter chicken fried chicken and fried mac and cheese balls entrees, and for mains had the ribs, pork belly, chicken and sausages. This fed a party of five. All were outstanding. Best meat dish was the sausages, and best entree was the buttermilk chicken.
Good range and well matched selection of beers.
4.0 Yums
Seriously I don't know why it took me this long to get to this place. I've seen it packed all the times I have come to the street food collective.
One late night, near to closing the place was empty, decided to pop in and find out if I was able to dine in. I asked for the short rib, best God damn decision I've made all week. The service was really quick and the food was FANTASTIC, it was all kinds of serious noms full of flavour and meaty goodness. Definitely gonna try the rest of the menu.
Amazing food and atmosphere! A must eat in Ponsonby for any carnivore 🤗 I recommend doing the pit boss special, where you get a selection to share... I will be back!
We popped along to Miss Moonshine's for lunch with our little one as I was in the mood for some American BBQ.
The lunch menu is a bit different - hubby and I ordered the pork belly taco salad and the beef brisket sandwich and shared them. The beef brisket was juicy and tender - really delicious! Would definitely get it again. The pork belly salad was also nice, but nothing too special. We also ordered the smoked potato salad, which had a nice flavour, although the potatoes were a bit harder than I expected (I usually have slightly mushier potatoes in a salad).
The little one's kid's meal was impressive - a tray of curly fries, sausage, truffled mac and cheese ball and green beans. Hubby and I happily helped her to finish it off. She also got an ice cream sundae with her meal.
I was a little bit disappointed that you couldn't order the BBQ meats on their own at lunchtime, but still enjoyed our meal. I would be keen to try the jalapeño poppers that I spied on the table next door.
The service was efficient, the decor is stylish and tidy and the food was good. If you're in the mood for American BBQ, you should try this place out.
Great casual food with a buzzing vibe in the restaurant. Came here for a Christmas catchup with the girls, good place to share dishes with a group. We had the fried chicken, macaroni cheese balls, pulled pork, beef brisket, short rib And a tomato salad. Everything was yummy although the beef brisket dry, I wouldn't recommend this.
I was here earlier in the year and they already have a new menu. One of these was the Chidorkin, chicken stuffed with duck and wrapped in bacon. It sounded really appetising so I had to try it. It was ok. I think that the duck portion was a mousse so it gave it a weird texture, almost pate like. Good to try but the other meats are better.
Probably suited for sharing as they serve their meals on larger platters and just put the different items on it.
Nice service and tasty food.
Nice restaurant decoration, relaxing environment to have dinner. We ordered the pit boss set. The starter was already quite a lot. We could barely finish the main. The service was very good. However the food was just OK.
Great spot hidden across the road from Ponsonby central and behind the golden dawn pub tavern. We have been here before at peak times and never had a chance to sit down until this evening before the rush hour which was nice at the sun trap table. We had the beef brisket , curly fries and delicious pimms to wash it down . We do recommend the chicken and ribs too if you can stomach the large portions . Staff was friendly and always make sure we we ok and happy. Great good, nice atmosphere and friendly staff - highly recommended ! On a side note , if you wish to have more street food variety , hop outside to the other offerings like Brazilian , ice cream, tacos and others but I'd stick to miss moonshines for guaranteed goodness :-)
Great food (plus generous portion and reasonably priced), great service (all staff have great personalities and very attentive), stylish decor, and i only noticed the next day when i heat up the leftover and noticed that they use a tinfoil tray as takeout box! Love their attention to details. Will definitely return 👍
Really great atmosphere. We were lucky enough to set in front of the kitchen. That's where the magic happen. Chefs had that down to business attitude and lack of interaction in between themselves. Had the lamb ribs and the beef brisket. Beautifully well cooked and tender. Would definitely come back for the macaroni cheese balls and the curly fries.
Finally got to try this place on Friday night, as I thought it was super busy and had an awesome atmosphere. The food was amazing - we tried the short ribs, the pork belly and the chicken with duck and they all were mouth watering. we also tried the Mac and cheese balls which could possibly be the best invention in the past 10 years haha. Thoroughly enjoyed this place and the service everyone was soo lovely, will definitely be back!
Loved it! The mains we had were good, nothing mind blowing, but the starters (cheeseballs and corn bread), the passion fruit mojito cocktail and the dessert were amazing. Alonso Coutinho Licks Rafael Fonseca
Had a great night here made more so by the surroundings and the staff attention. Enjoyed the entrees and mains just the right amount of spice and heat comming through and the smoke on the beef was very tasty. Easy to recommend.
Great location and good vibe. Some dishes are great while others not so much. Pork Belly is a sure fire winner, chidorkin not so much. Each dish would do well to come with a portion of greens(especially for the price) but currently you've got to order them separately. Worth a visit with group of friends.
The short ribs at Tate of Auckland were absolutely amazing!! Loved the peppery spice and the way the creamy tangy slaw complimented the ribs. Can't wait to visit their restaurant.
Would definitely recommend the beef rib. Delicious. Super tender - no need for a knife. The slaw was perfect with it. Could way about three of these ha ha.
Tried the beef rib here that was so tender that you could cut it with your plastic fork.
The flavour was perfect, smokey and rich served with a tasty coleslaw, can't wait to go to the restaurant and try the whole menu.
Great spot. Decent atmosphere, amazing food, amazing flavours. Turkey wings are huge with a bit of bite to it! And the bbq short rib is smoked and presented with pickles to cut through the rich flavour. Glad to have this spot in Auckland.
Walking in this area of Ponsonby just shouts out COOL VIBES. Tucked behind the main row of shops, you need to spot the little alleyway that brings you here from the main Ponsonby road.
Overall, I rate this place a 4 for the ambience, drinks and entrees. Not so much the mains and that chicken. See below for more details.
Ambience is casual, hipster with its industrial settings and bulbs.
Service was good, we were greeted by Dracula (it was Halloween) and escorted to our table. The waiter explained the menu and was very helpful.
Food wise, it was a sharing menu. There were ups and downs. Highly recommend the Mac n cheese balls (comes with an amazing truffle sauce - please lick the plate clean) and the corn bread was good too! Pork belly main was tender with good crackling!
On the downside, the chili chicken were a disappointment. It was a weird part of the chicken with bones and wasn't too tasty. Lamb ribs were quite average too. Another downside was the price of the mains! They were double the entree prices but so small! Very surprised by the small portions of meat for the price with no mini sides...
Drinks menu was good - I had the K road cocktail and my best description of it is that it taste like Disneyland. So much fun, sweet and yummy! Friend had the $13 shake and wasn't too bad actually for an alcoholic shake.
Definitely a cool place to hang out :)
This was my first visit to Miss Moonshine's, and the first thing I noticed was the noisy bustle and the combined retro industrial feel to the dining room. This might not be the wisest choice for a romantic tete-a-tete but the food was memorable. We started off with a series of side dishes including the corn bread which had a surprising nip of heat, scallops and the mac N cheese balls which were all well cooked, but the real star of the show was the meat. If you don't really like meat in great quantities this place is not for you, but if you like slow cook barbecue then there's a lot to like. The pork belly was soft and tender, the beef short ribs were tasty but more chewy and less moist, the pulled pork was well sauced but for me the undisputed star of the show was the brisket. Picking up a piece for the first time I could tell before eating that it would be good. Mine had a generous amount of fat which had kept it super moist and soft with excellent flavour. The plates don't look that big but it was very rich, helped by the coleslaw on the side. Some wonderful light donuts with salted caramel sauce and vanilla cream finished the meal on a sweet note. Would I go back? If it was for the brisket you bet I would.
Had an outstanding lunch here sitting in the gorgeous spring sunshine in the courtyard. I popped into the restaurant and ordered at the till and then we sat down to enjoy our drinks. The food was excellent and it arrived promptly with friendly warm service. The corn bread (though a little crumbly) was divine. The stuffed jalepenos were outstanding. We then had two of the meat plates (short ribs and turkey/duck/bacon) with a slaw and fries. This was between three of us and it was a great feed. Boys and Girls well satisfied. Will definitely return.
Absolutely delicious! From the cocktails to the meat to the homemade pickles!
We had the special chicken wings which were the best deep fried chicken in Auckland! If management is reading this, please make the wings a permanent! I'd come back just for those wings! We also had the scallops which were amazing and the pork belly! The f*ck me its hot sauce was awesome especially if you like chilli sauce with your bbq!
Everything was perfect, service was amazing!
The only thing is that the music is super loud, its very hard to converse in the restaurant because you can barely hear! It's also abit dark, but that's my personal preference when it comes to my dining atmosphere!
Definitely would come back for more!

Yesss.... I like! gotta love the entire idea of an American BBq in the middle of Ponsonby! this place blew my mind! I loved the entire concept and the atmosphere`! we were well served from the time we set foot in the restaurant o when we left! Yummy succulent meat off the bone on great fries and smaller entrees to compliment the entire experience! I totally recommend everyone to give this place a try ! extremely good value for money #g1
America. Home of the Free and Land of the Brave. God-fearing lovers of guns, and high fructose corn syrup. Inventors of the French fry (or ‘American fries’ as they call them in France) and, as I found one rainy fourth of July, kings of the barbecue. I was recently back in Auckland and was keen to check out the fourth of July celebrations at the newly minted Street Food Collective in Ponsonby, however due to the sour weather there were a lot more patrons than places to put them at the SFC. And the large floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that opened onto the darkened interior of Miss Moonshine’s made the place look so warm and inviting.
Industrial chic permeates Miss Moonshine’s from the rough wooden and steel decor to the one and a half tonne barbecue puffing out delicious smokey aromas out back (unfortunately these aromas stayed with us well after we’d left due to poor ventilation). The wait staff were suitably kitted out in star-spangled get-ups and equally star-spangled personas which added to the air of Southern hospitality. Sharing is caring at Miss Moonshine’s; they offer an array of starters and sides to complement their barbecued wares and (most) of them are out of this world delicious. We started with a few loaves of their corn bread with burnt butter and my God it was brilliant. Unlike the cakey-sweet offerings I’d stumbled on haphazardly in New York, theirs is savoury, savoury savoury. Their loaf is crusted up beautifully with the added textured of cornmeal whilst its steaming, crumbly interior is studded with jalepenos.
The main event is a number of barbecued animals of different orders; there’s beef as brisket and as short rib, pork pulled and in belly form, and of course there’s chicken. We opted for the chicken and pulled pork, both delicious, the latter coming with fingers of oh-so-crunchy crackling. Although meat is the main attraction I found them competing for the spotlight when in the company of Miss Moonshine’s cauliflower cheese with truffle crumbs and pigtail fries. I always thought dousing a vegetable in a cheese sauce a rather gaudy way to convince people to eat them but they have theirs oh-so-right here; thick and luxurious without an ounce of grease (I know it’s in there, I just couldn’t taste it) or sickliness to it. And curly fries? If you opt for the shoe strings you’re a fool. The apple and mint slaw in theory was a nice idea but ended up being bland and lacking the tang we so wanted to off-set all the meat and richness.
This bunker of smoke and flesh is a welcome retreat from the smoothie-sipping, yoga-stretching hippies who have been squeezing the fun and danger out of eating out. Afterall, what’s more exciting, slurping kale juice or flirting with the possibility of a coronary artery bypass?
God Bless Amurica, and Miss Moonshine’s.
Miss Moonshines had been high priority on my list for a while. I mean who can resist [vegetarians shut your ears] slow cooked, smoky meat, juicy to the touch and falling off the bone.
As they don’t take bookings for groups less than 8, we went on an early Friday night. Luckily you can ask Miss Moonshine’s to buzz you in for their underground parking if you go after 6pm.
Facing out to the Street Food Collective, you can tell they were in great company. All the vibes were there, people out to have a good night, the smell of food cooking, and music starting the night off.
The cocktails sounded delish, with cheeky names like Stubborn Ass and K Road. All fairly reasonably priced at $12 to $14 dollars, I tried the Shake to satisfy my craving. All night I found myself addictively sipping away at the brown-papered milk bottle it came in.
As recommended by other vendors at the Street Food Collective, we ordered corn bread with burnt butter. It was good but not the melt in the mouth sensation that I was expecting. It was more on the crumbly side.
More on the starters, we also ordered the magic mushroom and cauliflower cheese which were both tasty but erred on the small side. Between three people, we had a few forkfuls of each dish.
Having heard great things about the beef brisket, it was a must order and we also tried the pulled pork. Everything was presented on large metal trays which was interesting and to the theme, but we had to quickly demolish our starters to make everything fit on our small table.
Hands down the brisket was the winner, being amazingly melt in the mouth. This is what slow cooked goodness is about! 8 hours smoked with pohutukawa. The pulled pork was ok but nothing memorable. These days, pork is always “pulled pork”, like avocado is always “smashed avocado”.
All would not be complete without tasting all their desserts. And to answer our woes, a dessert platter was presented on their menu as a “wild saucy threesome”. Why yes please..
It was like Christmas on a plate! My unexpected favourite was the chilli chocolate mousse. Even know I was stuffed, I wished there were more donuts to go with the jug of salted caramel sauce. I wanted to drizzle it on everything.
Food was delicious but the prices were a bit steep for what it was. I was stuffed with the amount of food but those with bigger appetites may have to add some fries or rice to their meal.
Came with a group of friends raving bout their meat and everything.
Delicious. Sides are to share but pretty pricey. However really delicious despite being a tad on small side. Nothing much to complain about.
Meat was amazing. Just succulent and smoked and BBQed to the best tasting piece. My personal favourite would be the pork range. Didn't try chicken and for beef, the beef brisket was really delicious and melt in your mouth.
Their drinks were really delicious and we will definitely be back again! Great for big groups as well since they had a long table that could be shared if you don't mind.
I was here recently for a #brunchclub meetup, and it was phenomenal! The atmosphere is really nice, the service is average (although they were busy and we were a big group so not totally their fault), the music was too loud for normal conversations, but the food is out of this world!
There was cornbread, coleslaw, curly fries, mushrooms, chicken/corn combo, and then the meat. All slow cooked (I think) there was a beef short rib, pork belly, and lamb. I honestly could not get enough of the short rib, and even thinking about it now makes my mouth water! I’m heading back as soon as possible with friends, as I can’t wait to experience this place again. Highly recommend the food, it is divine!
Mmmmmm where do you start, slow cooked meat of every kind, falling off the bone and flavours were out of this world. Topped off with great service and easy parking downstairs.
Been here a few times now and Miss Moonshine's is consistently good. The food all very delicious and despite being somewhat haphazard at times, the service is quick and efficient and the staff are knowledgable on the menu. Favourite picks have to be: brisket, beef rib, curly fries, and fried chicken. One thing I was a bit disappointed with was the lack of theatre around the food. With an open plan kitchen producing fantastic bbq-pit style food you'd expect a bit more energy coming from the chefs. Not a deal breaker by any means.
Came here for Brunch Club on Sunday and it was AWESOME - I'm a massive fan of southern style food and we tried the cornbread, slaw, mushrooms, curly fries, pork belly, beef and lamb? The meat was cooked to absolute perfection, I have never had such soft pork belly before. I really liked the mushrooms, and coleslaw - I thought the flavours which really delicious in both of those dishes.
The drinks are all really interesting looking with some great looking flavours.
It was really busy for a Sunday lunch time too which I found surprising. I'm looking forward to going back!
Had a brunch club meet up here with 14 other people. I really enjoyed our meal - set menu which was organized before hand. My favourite part was the pork belly. Absolutely delicious. My least favorite part was the LOUD music. I must be getting old, because i couldn't hear any the conversations. Didn't have the balls to ask them to turn it down.
Been here twice now, and the vibe is just incredible. Nothing else like it in NZ. Didn't even mind waiting with an epic selection of street food and alcohol in a buzzing courtyard. This place has captured the international hyped new generation of restaurants. Now to the food.... Short ribs, pulled pork, the chicken... I've tried it all and I can't fault it. I can't wait to be back. Oh and the bourbon ! Bloody good... He cocktails are so good too. I'd give it a 7 if I could
We struggled to find this place. But boy was it worth the struggle! Everything was on point. Service was friendly and quick. Food tasted just as promised, actually better than I hoped.
We ordered the Beef Ribs and they were absolutely melt in your mouth. The pig tail fries have to be hands down the best fries in town. They've taken something as humble as fries and packed it with so much flavour. Really well done. We ordered the buttermilk fried chicken, the corn salad accompanying it is was so fresh and tangy, perfectly complimenting the chicken, although for the price, I would have expected slightly better portions. The only disappointment was the Mac and Cheese balls. They weren't bad, but it was nothing to write home about in comparison to the rest of their menu and I would not go back for it. But in saying that, I would definitely still highly recommend it and would certainly visit again.
It's an excellent environment, bustling, loud and busy with people ages 25 and up. It was relaxed and modern.
The food was good, we did not dislike anything we ordered. We got a brisket, rib and pulled pork, all smoky and melting in the mouth. The small plates - mushrooms, oysters, and fried chicken were tasty. My favourite dish was actually the cauliflower and cheese with a truffle crumb. The cocktails/drinks were impressive, we enjoyed a range and I was pleased with them all. The food was delicious with a menu that fit perfectly, however I feel it was missing a bit of punch or a spark.
Service was brilliant, they were honest and informative, they made sure that we weren't under or over ordering for the table. They made suggestions, and extremely attentive.
Saturday lunch with a group of 8. Five of us had the set menu which we couldn't have been more pleased with. $45pp for a serious of entrées and mains. The food was completely delicious. Excellent service. Trendy, fun ambiance. Would definitely recommend.
Went there last week with my friend and it was crazy busy on Friday night, but the service was okay because we booked table in advance. The food came on time but little bit disappointed with the burn smoked beef brisket which can't be eaten and the burn part was bitter and lack of seasoning. The pulled pork is the best dish that I can recommend because it has beautiful flavor with some crunchy pork skin on top! Yummm😋 I might come back for more pulled pork in the future😊
Miss Moonshine's knows how to cook meat well. We visited with a large group and had the opportunity to try a range of meats and sides on offer. Favourites were the short rib and buttermilk chicken - the avocado and corn salsa was amazing. Also loved the curly fries and mushroom side. Highly recommended!
Visited here on a steady Tuesday night. Friendly staff greeted us and sat us at a table. Our waitress was very friendly and helpful, as well as enthusiastic which made the experience even better.
We ordered the cornbread, lamb cutlets, beef short rib, pigs tail fries, and the apple mint slaw. I had previously emailed asking if any meats were halal and Annelise was very helpful with asking suppliers.
Food arrived without much of a wait. The cornbread was the best that I had tried, being moist, melting in the mouth, not at all hard or dry. The meat was wonderfully smoked and cooked perfectly, with the meat collapsing as soon as you attempted to cut it. Only thing was that it needed a bit of salt, but when paired with the red sauce from the fries, it was delicious. The pigs tail fries were wonderfully crisp and well seasoned, and the slaw being perfect to cut through the meatiness of the meal.
Had also tried the Stubborn Ass cocktail which was delicious and easy to drink, being my first time trying moonshine. Definitely recommend trying!
Miss Moonshines is a wonderful place to visit, especially when you want a hearty meal with great service.

We came for an early dinner on a Friday night. The don’t accept bookings for small groups but as we were early, there were plenty of free tables, though they packed out quickly. The dining room is lovely with dark wooden furniture and a very cool mural at the back. They keep it very warm on a cold winter night and the tables are small and quite close together.
The staff were friendly, if a little too quick to come back after handing out menus and happily gave us advice on how many dishes to order.
The three of us and ordered cocktails, 2 starters, 2 meats, a side, and all of their desserts. I love sharing food but it’s a little tricky with a small table and we had to quickly finish items to make room for the next dish.
I love mojitos and I heard the Beach Bunny mojito calling my name. This was was sweet and tart with lovely flavours. The corn bread was good, as was the magic mushroom. We had heard great things about the beef brisket and we also ordered the pulled pork. The cauliflower cheese was tasty but the portion was mean for $9. I expected more cauliflower for that price.
The presentation was interesting, everything came out on metal trays or au gratin pans. The dessert came out on a metal tray also and was quite fun to eat like this. The donuts to salt caramel ratio was off…the dilemma of eating half a jug of salt caramel sauce with a spoon.
The brisket was the highlight of our meal, though the chocolate and chilli mouse was unexpectedly moreish.
The prices are a little steep for the portion sizes and style of food, but the food is delicious and I highly recommend the brisket. This is a good place for meat lovers and BBQ fans. Large appetites might find themselves peckish.
I’d come back for an order of the brisket all to myself.
EDIT: August 2015. I came back with a large group for their $45pp set menu. There was plenty of food and I would recommend the set menu for groups. My favourite meats would be the pork belly and the brisket. I wasn't fond of the fried chicken as it was dry and needed a lot of sauce, but the corn it came with was really good. Curly fries were great and magic mushrooms were consistent with the first time I tried it. While Miss Moonshines isn't considered a vegetarian friendly, some of the starters and sides would make a great vegetarian meal. Of course, the meat is where they really shine.
Verdict: one of the best ‘shared dining’ eats in Auckland. Come with a group of friends so you can try more items on their menu.
Came here on a week night with two friends for dinner and we were so impressed with the food, service and ambience. I don’t know how it could be better.
The restaurant is big with modern booth type seating. It was on the dimmer side with mood lighting but was bright enough that you could see your companions and the food on the table.
We were served by two different waitresses during our dinner. They were both friendly, developed good rapport with us and were enthusiastic about the menu, sharing their personal favourites. I really liked that they were passionate about the menu and they weren’t lying when they said everything tastes good. They had a rockabilly type theme with gingham hair scarves and little aprons, adding to the charm of the restaurant.
Everything we tried tasted amazing and each mouthful was an explosion of flavour.
Must tries are:
1) Mac n Cheese balls with crispy bacon and aioli. It was perfection. The creaminess of the mac and cheese was just right and put together with the crunchiness of the bacon and the deep fried crumb outer was so much good texture in one mouthful
2) Beef Brisket main - melt in your mouth smoky goodness with a charred exterior and excellent sauce to match.
3) Orleans Donuts - everyone orders the donuts. The salted caramel sauce packs a good punch of salt which is why the dish isn't overly sweet. The fresh cream also helps to cut through the richness of the caramel. The donuts are freshly made, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Guaranteed to leave you with a smile on your face.
I had heard amazing things about Miss Moonshine's and wanted to impress a friend here from overseas so off we went! '
The restaurant is a wee bit tricky to find as its tucked away down an alley but definitely persevere! On arrival the restaurant was packed so they took our number and we waited next door at a little bar area for drinks and chats. I was non-alc this night however enjoyed the my creaming soda - great reminiscing material!
Once seated we picked some plates to share. Fried chicken and boar sausage to start - the avocado and sweetcorn salsa on the chicken was a great match and the sausage had a spicy kick to it which was a nice surprise.
For our mains we had beercan chicken, beef brisket and pulled pork with curly fries and cauliflower cheese. The meats were all cooked beautifully, tender and flavoursome. I really enjoyed the experience of sharing and of being able to try each dish.
I have had some great service experiences lately and this is no exception - that great mix of attentive and friendly, banter but not over the top.
Such an enjoyable night on many levels!
I think the most used words during this dinner was "oh my gosh oh my gosh this is so good". Customer service = on point, ambience = on point, food = do I even need to say. We ordered the Mac n Cheese ball, mint Apple slaw, buttermilk chicken, pulled pork, beef brisket, dirty rice and finished off with the Orleans donut. Best dinner in a while!!! Already looking forward to coming back!
Always keen to try a new place we headed to Miss Moonshine's for dinner last night. We were a large group so able to book (they only take bookings for 8 or more) so we walked right in. It is tucked away behind the new Lot 3 development on Ponsonby road. I didn't realise there was a little bar in the courtyard outside otherwise we could have met their for a drink first, but will definitely come back and do that another time.
The food is southern state American style heavily focussed on BBQ. I wouldn't recommend it for a vegetarian but it is a meat lovers delight. The mains (from the pit) are various BBQ style meats which come out on platters so share for the table. We had the pulled pork, beer chicken and beef short rib, as well as curly fries, cauliflower cheese and buttered lettuce with candied pecans and feta as sides!
The cocktail list is quite extensive, I had the krd moonshine cocktail that came complete with a watermelon and lolly garnish.
For dessert we tried the doughnuts and the chocolate mousse. The chocolate mousse was full of intense flavours from the berry coulis on top to the bits of chilli throughout the mousse it was quite an experience.
Overall I loved the meal, loved the place and will definitely return!
Was very impressed with the experience, nothing was too much trouble and the staff where exceptional. We had a large group of 12 and our waitress was on point taking all out orders correctly and delivering us cocktails in record time. The food was full of flavor and there was plenty of it. Definitely worth booking a date to try this place.
Great service, thanks to our man George, we came especially to try MM's new brunch menu. We'd been wanting to come here for a while and are glad our maiden meal @ MM was brunch. Between the 3 of us, we ordered the Smoke'n me out (a nice meaty brunch),magic mushies and Moonshine's boar sausage (delicious). We ate all our meals and were nice and full upon leaving. We're also not big filtered coffee drinkers but Flight coffee's brew grows on you gulp by gulp. Love the endless cup thing too!
Went here for a friends birthday. Was a great atmosphere in a good location. The service was great and quick and the cocktails were delicious. We got the set menu which gave us a taste of a few different things and wasn't too bad value for money. The starters were pretty good, especially the corn bread which there was plenty of to go around. The main course, on the other hand, seemed to lack a bit of flavour and the portions weren't huge considering there were 6 of us. It kind of felt that they were giving us lots of the cheaper starters to fill us up before the main. The meat was very tender though. I did think the desert tasting platter was really good, I especially loved the salted caramel sauce with the doughnuts. Apparently the beers were great too. Overall, not a bad experience, but don't think I'll be rushing back again.
Had an absolutely fantastic dinner here last weekend with a group of 4. We were heading to Ponsonby Central but one of the group reccomended Miss Moonshines. After a 5 minute wait, we were sitted facing the kitchen. The atmosphere was extremely welcoming, warm and cozy. For entrees, we had the fried chicken and the corn bread - both to die for (we had to order more of both they were so good). For the mains, we got a select of beef short rib, beer can chicken and the pork knuckle. All were absolutely delicious ( I particularly enjoyed the beef short rib). All in all, a fantastic new spot in Ponsonby that will become a new local go-to restaurant.
Initially tried their food at the Onehunga night market, was good enough to do a loop and come back for seconds, so was pretty stoked when they got a proper premises.
Went the opening week, which was crammed, and with a brand new team rocking the place- accidents may have happened to others, but we didnt get them, and were pretty impressed that they were handling it all so well.
Got the beef shortribs for him, (a rabbid carnivore) and a selection of veggie sides. Husband was most impressed by the meat- (and hes a bloody meat snob,) Which was all but falling of the bones- able to be cut with a fork it was that tender. Sides were ballsy nad delicious. Cocktails were cheeky adn rocked. A bloody hipster with bacon- loved it. Couldnt quite find it initially- but then followed nose. Found it easy enough!! Brilliant night.
We arrived in the opening week of Miss Moonshines with a group of 6. The place was packed and buzzing!!! We thought the decor was really great and when visiting the toilet makes you laugh you know you are in for a good night.
Our meal started with the cornbread which was superb. We kept changing our minds about what we wanted but the waitress was very patient and lovely!!!
We loved everything. Its great to have a meal where meat is the hero...and it certainly was...tender and juicy with just a hint of smoky aroma....with almost a hint of citrus?? the sides were perfect and the dessert was the best Lemon Meringue pie I have ever had...the doughnuts got a 10 out of 10.
The Bar in the old Bedford Truck was a great idea and definitely added to the fun atmosphere!! we will be back again and soon!!
I had an amazing dinner on Saturday night at Miss Moonshines, I booked a table of 8 and we had excellent service, the staff had a cool vibe about them and was all round a good atmosphere. The food was next level and really lives up to the hype. The Pork Knuckle and the Beef short rib were my favourite, delicious and fell right off the bone. They exceeded expectations and I see Peter Calder just gave them a 4/5 in the Herald on Sunday review, well deserved although I give them a 5.5. Top effort for the new guy in town!
Knew nothing about this place before I went. But had an awesome meal! Did the $45 set menu and was not disappointed. Great cocktails, brilliant service, good times & great food
