We met extended family at the Friends of Farmer in Takanini last weekend. It is situated in the Palmers Garden centre in a semi garden setting which is refreshingly large and open, with plenty of space between tables, comfortable seating, and a children's play area. The menu consisted of the usual popular options but also some more unusual ones such as the Grill Platter. We went for the platter ($22) and the Burger of the week ($18.90). The platter comprised 2 chicken skewers, 2 beef skewers, large bratwurst sausage, cumin lamb slices and salad, with fries and hummus - a very generous serving that was greatly appreciated by our meat eater. The chicken burger was delicious and the accompanying fries light and crisp on the outside and fluffy inside. Of the rest of our group, two had the burger and chips, one eggs Benedict ($16.90), and the other had Eggs on toast with several sides. All meals seemed to be well appreciated, even by the child amongst us (who certainly made good use of the play area). This venue is well worth a visit for the rural setting and ambiance - and the food.
Family friendly. Staff are great. Food wasn't too bad. Price is reasonable.
Our weekend “go to” for brunch. My partner loves the Nachos and I usually get the big breakfast. We have tried Nachos at other places but they don’t measure up to Friend of the Farmers. We have been going with our Zomato gold so it was super affordable. They’re not offering it at the moment but we will still go.

Food was amazing. Me and my boyfriend got a corn fritters and salmon Benny. Corn fritters was super amazing and salmon Benny was quite good. Only criticism is that the eggs were slightly overcooked otherwise no complaints at all. cute venue with a nice vibe to it. Staff were extremely friendly

There were performances the day we came in so the entertainment was a plus while we waited for a food. This place is tucked in within kings plant barn in takanini so may be a little tricky to locate if you are not a local. The food was great. We had brunch here with my family. We had high expectations and the food, service and ambience did not disappoint. A nice place to spend a sunny morning at.
Friend of the Farmer indeed. Beautifully located at Plant Barn with farm and rural setting. Food was beautiful and delicious. Prices were quite reasonable too. Perfect to catch up with friends or family away from the city.
Servings are more than average. Breakfast platter and the salmon salad I love! Coffee and desserts are nice. Steak is average. But overall experience is great.
Really enjoyed my experience at Friend Of A Farmer, great location it was quite busy but didn’t feel like it as the restaurant is very spacious. I enjoyed the food my partner got the farmers breakfast and I got the eggs benedict. I also used Zomato gold here and had no issues.

The fish was fresh and the steak done to perfection.
This is a perfect place for families with kids. They serve delicious foods and coffees. They also have a trampoline and my kids love it! You should visit this place if you havent already
Visited the Friend of the farmer with my friends who live in the area for brunch. Was pleasantly surprised with how much seating was available and how cute the food place looked.
I opted for the Turkish bread and a hot chocolate. Really enjoyed the hot chocolate it was simple but creamy and sweet. I loved the Turkish bread, had such a lovely bite and the fillings worked so well with the bread. The bacon and egg was cooked perfectly and the sauce helped everything come together.
When I am back in Takanini I will definitely be coming back for brunch!
Lovely experience, we did get a little confused as to where the cafe was but you have to walk through the kings plant barn where you will find the entry on your left. Ordered the salmon eggs Benedict which was really tasty however I didn’t really like the hash much. My partner got the same meal and enjoyed his a lot. The chai was delicious and the place was very spacious and had adequate tables and seating for everyone. You can also check out all of the plants and garden essentials which we did after our meal. Overall experience was very pleasant, staff were welcoming and cheerful, food was made and served faster than we expected. Would definitely return in the future and try out other meals on the menu.
Friend of the farmer is very cozy cafe in a very natural location. Me and my friend, we loved the savoury muffin and the very generously sized almond croissant. 😊
Such a cute cafe and definitely a hidden gem. We had the Nachos & one of the Burgers off the board. Nachos were so delicious and a great portion & the Burger was also very well cooked and flavorful. Only downside was my Iced Chocolate was very warm & I didn’t enjoy it as much as I would have liked. Also a Kid friendly place with a trampoline available just outside the cafe!
Adored the Decor, very spacious area with a lot of tables and super friendly staff! Only downfall for me was the calamari I ordered was over cooked a little like rubber. Overall, I loved the vibes this place gives 💫
We went for a brunch on Auckland Day. The place is great, feels you are in an actual greenhouse. Food had reasonable prices and the taste was good too. Nothing fancy, just a nice big kiwi breakfast to enjoy with friends.
First time at Friend of the Farmer, the food was generous and the staffs were super friendly. Such a pleasure to dine in a place where the staffs actually enjoy what they do. The service was amazing :) thanks for having us!
Awesome atmosphere and surroundings. Didn’t like my mushroom dish that much, very plain and a bit pricy, extra sauce would have been nice... their chips was nice :)
Yummy food, great, fast service and lots to do for kids with the animal areas and trampoline. We both had the mushrooms with chorizo and it was delicious. Will definitely be back to try everything else on the menu!

Came here after church for a brunch. I had the beans and bacon, it was simple yet executed well. My hubby ordered the calamari salad, it was the best! Calamari was perfectly cooked, melts in our mouth. Not to mention, the hot mocha was blended to my liking.
I love the idea of putting up a cafe surrounded by plants. The place is relaxing, perfect for a sunny and lazy Sunday. Very outdoorsy, and they have a spot for kids to entertain them, and i like the rustic looking book shelf wall.
Been here three times and I love it. The atmosphere here is so beautiful during summer, I came back here last week and it was still nice wasn’t cold at all. This time we got eggs bene with bacon, hash browns, panini and fries and I can’t fault anything about the food. Mocha is always good too 👌🏽 Definitely worth the drive from Henderson to Takanini
A hidden gym in takanini, a short 10min drive from manukau, located next to kings barn surrounded by greenery and flowers, this little cafe has it all, the great food, open style setting and friendly staff, perfect for lazy weekends!

Best calamari salad ever !! 🦑 cool setting and garden shop welcomes dogs which is cool too. Wedges were also really nice. New weekend brunch favourite, only suggestion would be to have the heaters on during winter.
Big outdoor layout of the cafe great for small functions, even has a smoking outdoor area and a kids playroom also has the largest bookcase I’ve ever seen where you can read and buy books.
This place is an awesome child friendly place. It's free range!! Has really nice food, presented really well. And the kids can go and have a walk around if they're bored.
This place is great. Its hidden away. I love the ambiance of the cafe. Its huge, plenty of cosy seating and fantastic for large group.
The food is good and plenty of choice both menu and cabinet food.
I definitely will go here again. You could get your gardening stuff @ plant barn too.

Nice setting and heating was on which made it very nice on a cold rainy day.
My eggs bene hash cake had a very weird taste to it, almost tasted off or it could've been just a bit too much sour cream? Eggs were done perfectly, so fluffy! I did ask for the sauce to be on the side and may have forgotten to be requested by the waitress.
Tea pot had a chip which was just unacceptable, what if more bits chipped into my tea.. it's very irresponsible of the barista to even think about serving with that tea pot.
My partner had a big breakfast and everything was very good, eggs were down perfectly, sausage and bacon were well done, flavour was good and wasn't too salty.
Love the farm and amazing book wall and friendly staff here! The good thing is you can bring your dogs come over here and catchup with friends. Good place, average food lol
Called in here on Sunday 11 June 2017, mainly for a nosey as was on a bike ride, hadn't been here for years, so many changes. There's a Farmers market here on Saturday's. Love the seating lay out. Just had a coffee which was very nice and fast service.

Collected my Birthday Voucher from here today. They gave me a free coffee and dessert. Both were very tasty. I got Mum a date scone with her coffee (which I helped eat cos it was so big ) We do enjoy coming here, the food is always good and so is the service. Just what's required after wandering round the garden centre

Decided to brunch here after scanning through Zomato looking for brunch ideas.
Let me tell you. . for someone (me) who doesn't like coffee to enjoy the mochacinno here. . They do some great coffee! We also ordered a Farmers hot chocolate and that was delicious.
Both coffee and hot chocolate was smooth in consistency, no bitter after taste or grit. . Really nicely made! I would definitely come back for the drinks alone!
In terms of food. We ordered a big breakfast and a bacon egg benedict. I really enjoyed the mash potatoes, it really fills you up and goes well with the eggs and bacon. Great combo. I felt like the eggs bene and big breakfast didn't differ much, only difference would be the extra tomatoes, sausage, and bread slices in the big breakfast. Speaking the sausages they were delicious! Nicely seasoned with a kick of spice, really nice! The bread was also soft and really good! I'm not a big fan of hard crunchy bread crust.
Staff were friendly, I was a little confused as to seating. . You can either seat yourself, grabbing a menu as you walk in and order at your table (you will need to leave a card with the waiter at the cashier for this method) or order at the counter and pay and find a table.
We chose to seat ourselves, food did take a while to come but it was a busy Sunday! What was really cute that while dining there was a waitress that had a tray of jelly cups to give to children in the cafe, free jelly!

Great location, cafe is located within King Plant Barn, there's a farmers market on Saturday and chicken and bunny coops around! Great for family or friends to get together for adults and kids! Can a lot of sparrows around the cafe due to the open plan of the cafe but they weren't bothersome while dining.

Continuing my escapade into South Auckland, I was fortunate enough to be travelling with locals and they brought me to this natural hotspot.
I call it a hotspot because Friend of Farmers is usually bustling with activity on a Saturday morning. Going through Plant Yard, you will then go through a serious of stalls that sell handmade crafts and delicacies. Once you've made your way across the stalls you'll be presented with the entrance to Friend of Farmers (FOF).
A hybrid interior where it feels like you're in someone's backyard/patio and library, there's a certain uniqueness to FOF. If you are seated near the right side of the entrance, you will be blessed with a view of the flower garden in all its magnificence.
As you reach the counter to order, you will be presented with a vast range of tasty meals and the smell of freshly grounded coffee.
I ordered a burger while my friends had a French toast, vegetarian muesli, and coffees.
It didn't take long for our food to come out, the burger was a fairly standard pub burger. Nice wholesome patty, plenty of cheese, and a good selection of other fillings. Coffees were hot and had a great taste.
Showstopper: Great food, while allowing you to experience a more outdoorsy feel.
Overall Grade: A-
Currently sitting in, absolutely delicious 👌2nd time coming here I thought I would bring mum with me... Amazing venue. Amazing food & lovely customer service 🙂 will be back 😁

Saturday morning and my search for coconut oil and google put together advised me to take this route to the nearest farmers market. Opens from the plant barn doors, leads to a small farmers market with breads, chutneys, pickles, chorizo and sausages made by locals. The farmers market end at the beginning of this cafe. Friend of the farmer.
Absolute delight from the moment one enters here. A multi levelled seating space. A corner for kids. A huge wall of books of any read-o-holic. Self included.
Quiet an extensive menu and bake options. For a food freak like me, i felt like eating them all. So I ate the biscotti while I was waiting for the order. Hand the super amazing french toast. Unlike any other french toast stack which has the berry coulis on the top of the stack; this one has in between each toast. More berry for each toast. And the same goes for the syrup. Small details that matter. Also had the eggs Benedict. Slurppp. The carb here was not a toast or a bagel. It was a potato fritter. My taste buds danced.
The coffee was spot on. Nothing that they can improve. Zilch improvement required.
The staff was lovely. The ambience was calming. The rain added to the feels.
Pricewise: $45 for 2
Returns: Can't wait to go back. Need to try the desserts this time around
After finishing some business in Takinini, I decided to visit this cafe as it has been in my bookmarks for a while now.
So glad I visited! I love how there are so many chooks upon entry to this cafe haha. The cafe itself is so spacious and would be an ideal place to visit during summer. Although I only ordered a mocha to go, it tasted damn good. I'm super keen to return again and try items off the menu , oh and from the cabinet :)
This cafe is set in a nice area amongst all the plants/trees etc. we ordered two burgers- the cajun chicken and the beef, mushroom and blue cheese. The burgers were not seasoned well- the cajun didnt have any spice to it, and the mango chutney made the burger really sweet, and the beef burger lacked salt. The cafe setting was nice though
This place is a really good little spot just outside of Takanini. You have to go through the kings plants store to get there but don't be fooled by the location...this place is worth a visit. A very enjoyable setting, a very good setup; the service is kind and homely. This is a cafe you would take your parents or close friends to. I ordered the beef burger which tasted so fresh. It seems like their ingredients comes from a good source (maybe the farmers market they hold every saturday). The fries and coleslaw were fresh and tasty sides. Even when the burger was dripping juice and egg (which is a pet peeve), I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The chocolate cake was as expected and the only aspect that brought my rating down...but that's in comparison to every other aspect being so damn good! I will definitely visit
Again and may just buy a plant or two on the way out.

I almost didn't want to write a review for this place because I want to keep it all to myself, but I trust people to not ruin this place by all showing up at once.
This place is hidden away out the back of Takanini by the Plant Barn store. If you weren't going to Plant Barn, you'd never know if existed!
It's literally hidden inside the store!
This place also has the farmers markets outside the cafe on Saturday at 9.30am to 1pm so I'd suggest checking it out.

This is my new favourite cafe by far. Even if the food was bad (which it isn't) I would still go here just for the atmosphere alone.
My partner surprised me by dragging me along to this place that was supposedly 'so me', and I'll agree, he nailed it.
Serene, surrounded by plants and books, quiet, this place is the perfect hide away to feel like you got out of Auckland without having to go too far.
You can also say hi to the many chickens and roosters running around, and Billy, the resident cockatoo who lives on the premises.
Now, the food. This place is like any cafe with its selection of pre-made foods and deserts, but we ordered off the main menu, which is burger heaven.
I ordered the portobello mushroom and blue beef burger, and my partner got the farm house Classic.
The blue beef burger was a heart beef patty with portobello mushroom, blue cheese sauce and salad, with chips and slaw. The farm house classic had a beef patty, bacon, a friend egg, a variety of sauces with the same sides.
One word. Yum.
The burgers were so yummy.
The portions were large ( I couldn't finish mine!) and the flavours were fresh. The desserts were soooo good. The service was friendly and the place itself was relaxing.
I think most people would complain the food is over priced win 20 dollars a burger and fries, but in the greater scheme of things that's typical Auckland pricing, and if you go off the location they're in, their prices make sense, so I have no complaints about the price at all, and you shouldn't let that deter you from checking this place out.
To sum it up, I fell in love with this place, and would happy go here to have a coffee every weekend given the chance. I'll let the photos speak for themselves.
I was a little concerned because of the mixed reviews, however, the cafe is in a nice setting. Our food came fast and was good. I like it that you can book. We would visit again.

We had heard about this place and decided to visit during Easter. We certainly weren't disappointed. Despite being very busy our food arrived very quickly and all meals were well
Received and delicious. Serving staff was very friendly and lovely towards our child. If I was going to be picky my husband's meal was a little on the lean side compared to the table next to us who had ordered the same thing. Looking forward to returning.
The name of this place doesn't come for free. surrounded by several plants and animals, when you get inside the Restaurant itself you'll find good chairs, tables, and a lovely library.
My first impression of the food wasn't that good though. My fish and chips was just average, and way too expensive.
During my second visit things were better: the creamy mushrooms were yummy and the squid salad was so tasty. But my friends ordered different dishes and the servings weren't following a standard. Some of them got bread and some didn't, showing the kitchen was a bit lost.
This is a beautiful place with a great cosy set up. The atmosphere is welcoming and the fine weather was a value added experience. I had the creamed mushroom with chorizo bits on sour dough and a mochachino.it was delicious. My husband had the eggs benedict with olives feta cheese and chorizo he ate it with gusto and he loved it.
Despite what I read that service is slow, it wasn't for us. Definitely will be back.
So much better here now that its been tidied up and the menu revamped. Excellent service and delicious food - huge meals! Bit difficult to get to the menus when there is a long queue - could you put some on the tables or down the other end?
Friend of the Farmer has an awesome concept, tucked away past a gardening store, past an aisle of weekend markets. Definitely a 10/10 for atmosphere, with their wooden chairs and tables and bookshelves in the back area. Food wasn't bad at all, but the service was rather slow.

Friend of the Farmer is a great indoor/outdoor cafe at Palmers Plantbarn. There is a farmers market on Saturday mornings at this location so we stopped off for brunch afterwards.
There are cabinet & menu items to choose from including lunch & brunch.
Today I chose the avocado & feta smash. You can have this with salmon, but I chose a side of bacon instead. The avocado was lovely & tasty with nice chunks of both feta & avocado - it's such a shame if you purée it as the chunks give good texture. It comes with a couple of pieces of toasted bread which were again a nice texture. The accompanying pesto was delicious. The bacon could have been cooked more to render the fat & it was a little cold, but overall the dish was nice.
Friends chose the Spanish omelette & the scrambled eggs with bacon.
Unfortunately the omelette had a big piece of egg shell underneath it but at least you know from that it is fresh eggs! This was easily picked out & I haven't seen this before on previous visits. Again comments that the bacon could have been cooked a bit more but overall both meals were great.
Coffee was okay - not bitter which is good but lacking some oomph (can't describe it any other way).
A great spot, yummy food & service ok. Good to visit on a Saturday & take in both the farmers market & animals on display (i.e. Pigs, chickens etc...)

Beautiful atmosphere. Indoor and outdoor. Entrance through kings plant barn. Has a rustic sort of feel with soft country music in the background. We go here regularly and love it. My partner and I were talking on our most recent visit and it would be a great venue for a small wedding reception.
We slept in quite late this day and were originally meant to go for breakfast but got here at 12. To our surprise, the breakfast menu was an all day menu! Yus!! 👍 We got the avocado smash (to share), Cajun chicken burger and eggs Benedict. They were all deliciously amazing!
The eggs Benedict were not your traditional eggs Benedict. Instead of being served on a muffin or toast it was served on a potato cake. This was the first time I've had eggs bene here serviced this way and it amazing! The only thing was the sauce did not taste like hollandaise sauce, it a a very strong butter taste. I don't know if this was their unique twist on things (to go with the potato cake) or if it was poorly made hollandaise sauce, but I just scraped some of it off and it was still yummy. Very fulling.
Will continue to visit regularly and will get the eggs bene after I've tried everything else 😁 I'll update you next find I get it 😊
Only 10 minutes away from Manukau was Friend of The Farmer cafe which is located within Kings Plant Barn. It’s definitely not a cafe you’d randomly stumble upon as the plant barn is also a little isolated from everything else. The cafe itself is relaxed and family friendly while still retaining a tinge of local, old fashioned touch (by that I mean it’s not purposefully urban chic like the typical new eateries) and clearly orientated for the locals.
Very nice place to escape from the city. Would come back to try more food. Atmosphere was so nice, surrounded with gardens and flowers, and also a mini farm area with pigs and bunnies to play with
Great family cafe! I loved the sections they have the library wall, 80's family room, big outdoor area. Food was so good! Lovely spot in South Auckland.

Fantastic spot wow & in Takanini a hidden gem. The space is gorgeous, the food is delicious .... A bonus for parents with little ones, there is a gorgeous little farm yard. If u r in the neighbourhood pop in ... u will be pleasantly surprised. Loved it !

I love coming here. We often have breakfast/brunch then have a nosey around the garden Centre. The staff are always friendly and welcoming and the food is nice. The outdoor seating area is beautiful and well suited for all weather conditions.
I was first to arrive (of a party of 12) and was welcomed and seated offered a drink, and they bought paper and crowns out for Miss 6.
The kids menu was very kid friendly - They have a combo for the kids A main, my daughter had chicken nuggets chips, a small drink - she chose Apple Juice and then a small ice-cream. Priced at around $8
I ordered a Farmers Burger which was divine - one of the best burgers I have had. It came with a side of fries and coleslaw $20
The staff were so accommodating and friendly, the decor inviting and relaxing. They had no issues with is being there for several hours.
The petting zoo of 2 kune kune pigs, an aviary and a few rabbits was a joy for the children.
My only regret is of not taking more photos. Will def be visiting again.
I love this cafe! The staff I interact with there are so friendly and willing to make your experience comfortable and memorable. I always feel welcome and as if we are sharing some time together, rather than I am just being served. For me this is the major draw at an eatery. I don't return to a place with amazing food if the staff aren't nice. When I bring friends with me they comment on the quality of the food and what a neat atmosphere the place has and how wonderful it would be for weddings, etc. All of the little touches have made it into rather a unique space and I can only see it blossoming. It is certainly a very different place to what it was. The addition of the animals is also a nice touch. If I lived closer I would definately make it my local.
First time coming to this place and I absolutely loved it. The place is so spacious and has a nice outdoor warm covered eating area as well. The service was really good and food was served reasonably fast. Presentation was very high quality. The food itself actually tasted how it looked, delicious! My partner and I left very satisfied with everything! My partner has lived in takanini his whole life and he's never been there! He literally stays off airfield road hah.. So I think we've found us a new local! We didn't realise we ordered 2 mains each!!! But it was so scrummy!! I will definitely recommend this place to anybody! Customer service is also brilliant! I have now found such a friendly and comfortable cafe. My son loves the place and I do as well. We had brunch over the weekend and the food was delicious. There is a little zoo with rabbits and pigs. Also, I was able to get my herbs for the garden at the garden centre. Was a lovely day out!
I have been here a couple of times. It always has lovely looking cabinet food and great coffee. I have had several items off the menu and always been happy. Its sunny and a great place to bring a group. You don't feel rushed or as if people are trying to move you on. Excellent for a catch up.

Wanted to update my review now I have visited here many times since I first visited when it opened. This has now become the go to cafe for me & friends who live out south being only a 5 minute drive away. The food has never disappointed my favourite is the omelette with egg white only. Their coffee isn't very good to be honest & it's the only thing I think they need to up their game on. Love the atmosphere of the place and that they have a little market there on Saturdays. Definitely recommend if you are looking for a new brunch spot 👌🏼
Great food, great environment. Had the meatloaf main and it was beautiful the only downside was the wilted spinach is a little over season. My partner had the french toast and she really enjoyed it only thing was the last piece of toast was overdone so it was a tad hard. Overall it was a good experience will definitely return.
This is our local its the only place in south to get a decent coffee, haven't eaten in yet but menu looks good - got salmon slider take away, me and salmon get in very well. Will have brunch there as soon as we get the time, my daughter loves coming here cause it's very kid friendly- when you ask for a kids hot choc, they ask- Luke warm?

Visited here for the first time, nice food, menu a little different then your normal cafe, had breakfast nice homemade beans, they did forget the bacon on my breakfast but rectified quickly, also gave the kids an ice cream for free. Good venue at the side of plant barn
Lovely open plan cafe inside Plantbarn - you literally have to walk into the store and to the left to get there. Really relaxed and pretty with great coffee and some nice cafe food. Not licensed and the signage is confusing.
Despite being so busy with mothers day,we were seated straight away,food only took 10 minutes was delicious staff awesome great service.

A little cafe that's spacious and peaceful. Had a takeaway coffee and a date scone that was delicious. Their service was fast and efficient. Date scone was crunchy and moist and not too sweet. They have cute rabbits outside in a little cage and they're placed in a big Plant Barn that you can have a good look around in. Loved this place and all the staff are always welcoming.

A place we frequently visit with family on weekends. It's peaceful, easy to park, and has rabbits and trampolines, making it a hit with the kids when we have leisure time. The food is decent, and particularly, their smoothies are a must-try. Highly recommended!
I had a lovely meal at this cafe. They have a fantastic selection of cakes in their display in their menu has a good range of options. The beans and bacon was a little disappointing as it came out cold and the egg was boiled rather than poached but the rest of the meals looked to fantastic!
Wonderful staff, tidy atmosphere and many beautiful plants to view. Plenty of seating area for whānau to join you on breakfast or lunch dates :) even your furry friends are welcomed if they stay on their best behaviour!
Though it is located inside plant barn it is a Very pleasant place. Visited the place for a friends wedding reception. Can accomadate for parties or a large group meetings around 70-100 people easily. Interiors are decorated with plants and flowers.
My daughter and I came for lunch, it was nice and close and I wanted to browse the fruit trees. Lunch was yummy I enjoyed the nachos and Kitana had the BLT. She enjoyed it. I had a picolo(?) Anyway was yummy. Bought 2 blackcurrant bushes...hopefully we will be enjoying jam this time next year😊
There is a child's play area with tables in close range so you can keep an eye on them. Always enjoy our time here and the food

We started coming here regularly early last year (2022) and unfortunately there was a drop in quality the more we came.
Good news FOTF is back on track to being our No1 stop on the weekend. Great service as always great coffee and amazing food.
